By a slope in the boundary ∂M of a 3-manifold, we mean the isotopy class α of a finite set of disjoint simple closed curves in ∂M that are nontrivial and pairwise nonparallel. Let M be (2n-1)\mathbbCP2#2n[`(\mathbbCP)]2(2n-1)\mathbb{CP}^{2}\#2n\overline{\mathbb{CP}}{}^{2} for any integer n≥1. We construct an irreducible symplectic 4-manifold homeomorphic to M and also an infinite family of pairwise non-diffeomorphic irreducible non-symplectic 4-manifolds homeomorphic to M. We also construct such exotic smooth structures when M is \mathbbCP2#4[`(\mathbbCP)]2\mathbb{CP}{}^{2}\#4\overline {\mathbb{CP}}{}^{2} or 3\mathbbCP2#k[`(\mathbbCP)]23\mathbb{CP}{}^{2}\#k\overline{\mathbb{CP}}{}^{2} for k=6,8,10.  相似文献

A closed 3-manifold M is said to be hyperelliptic if it has an involution τ such that the quotient space of M by the action of τ is homeomorphic to the standard 3-sphere. We show that the hyperbolic football manifolds of Emil Molnár [12] are hyperelliptic. Then we determine the isometry groups of such manifolds. Another consequence is that the unique hyperbolic dodecahedral and icosahedral 3-space forms with first homology group ℤ35 (constructed by I. Prok in [16], on the basis of a principal algorithm due to Emil Molnár [13], and by Richardson and Rubinstein in [18]) are also hyperelliptic.  相似文献

We study the following question: How does the Casson-Walker invariant λ of a rational homology 3-sphere obtained by gluing two pieces along a surface depend on the two pieces? Our partial answer may be stated as follows. For a compact oriented 3-manifold A with boundary ∂A, the kernel L A of the map from H 1(∂A;Q) to H 1(A;Q) induced by the inclusion is called the Lagrangian of A. Let Σ be a closed oriented surface, and let A, A′, B and B′ be four rational homology handlebodies such that ∂A, ∂A′, −∂B and −∂B′ are identified via orientation-preserving homeomorphisms with Σ. Assume that L A = L A and L B = L B inside H 1(Σ;Q) and also assume that L A and L B are transverse. Then we express
in terms of the form induced on ∧3 L A by the algebraic intersection on H 2(AΣA′) paired to the analogous form on ∧3 L B via the intersection form of Σ. The simple formula that we obtain naturally extends to the extension of the Casson-Walker invariant of the author. It also extends to gluings along non-connected surfaces. For every closed orientable hyperbolic Haken 3-manifold and, more generally, for any orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold M which is homeomorphic to the interior of a Haken manifold, the number 0.286 is a Margulis number. If H 1(M;ℚ) ≠ 0, or if M is closed and contains a semi-fiber, then 0.292 is a Margulis number for M.  相似文献

We construct a metric with positive sectional curvature on a 7-manifold which supports an isometry group with orbits of codimension 1. It is a connection metric on the total space of an orbifold 3-sphere bundle over an orbifold 4-sphere. By a result of S. Goette, the manifold is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the unit tangent bundle of the 4-sphere.  相似文献

Let (M,∂M) be a 3-manifold, which carries a hyperbolic metric with convex boundary. We consider the hyperbolic metrics on M such that the boundary is smooth and strictly convex. We show that the induced metrics on the boundary are exactly the metrics with curvature K>-1, and that the third fundamental forms of ∂M are exactly the metrics with curvature K<1, for which the closed geodesics which are contractible in M have length L>2π. Each is obtained exactly once. Other related results describe existence and uniqueness properties for other boundary conditions, when the metric which is achieved on ∂M is a linear combination of the first, second and third fundamental forms.  相似文献

Then, we turn our attention to the problem about the occurrence of algebraic primes in a polynomial sequence generated by an irreducible polynomial of K with prime arguments. This article examines the relationship between 3-manifold topology and knot invariants of finite type. We prove that in every Whitehead manifold there exist knots that cannot be distinguished by Vassiliev invariants. If, on the other hand, Vassiliev invariants distinguish knots in each homotopy sphere, then the Poincaré conjecture is true (i.e. every homotopy 3-sphere is homeomorphic to the standard 3-sphere).  相似文献

A 3-manifold is Haken if it contains a topologically essential surface. The Virtual Haken Conjecture posits that every irreducible 3-manifold with infinite fundamental group has a finite cover which is Haken. In this paper, we study random 3-manifolds and their finite covers in an attempt to shed light on this difficult question. In particular, we consider random Heegaard splittings by gluing two handlebodies by the result of a random walk in the mapping class group of a surface. For this model of random 3-manifold, we are able to compute the probabilities that the resulting manifolds have finite covers of particular kinds. Our results contrast with the analogous probabilities for groups coming from random balanced presentations, giving quantitative theorems to the effect that 3-manifold groups have many more finite quotients than random groups. The next natural question is whether these covers have positive betti number. For abelian covers of a fixed type over 3-manifolds of Heegaard genus 2, we show that the probability of positive betti number is 0.In fact, many of these questions boil down to questions about the mapping class group. We are led to consider the action of the mapping class group of a surface Σ on the set of quotients π1(Σ)→Q. If Q is a simple group, we show that if the genus of Σ is large, then this action is very mixing. In particular, the action factors through the alternating group of each orbit. Let R be a ring whose total ring of quotients Q is von Neumann regular. We investigate the structure of R when it admits an ideal that is irreducible as a submodule of the total ring of quotients. We characterize those rings which contain a maximal ideal that is irreducible in its total ring of quotients Q. An integral domain has a Q-irreducible ideal which is a maximal ideal if and only if R is a valuation domain. We show that when the total ring of quotients of R is von Neumann regular, then having a maximal ideal that is Q-irreducible is equivalently to certain valuation like properties, including the property that the regular ideals are linearly ordered.  相似文献

Let A be a function algebra on a compact space X. A linear isometry T of A into A is said to be codimension n or finite codimensional if the range of T has codimension n in A. In this paper we prove that such isometries can be represented as weighted composition mappings on a cofinite subset, (∂A)0, of the Shilov boundary for A, ∂A. We focus on those finite codimensional isometries for which (∂A)0=∂A. All the above results, applied to the particular case of codimension 1 linear isometries on C(X), are used to improve the classification provided by Gutek et al. in J. Funct. We prove that a locally compact ANR-space X is a Q-manifold if and only if it has the Disjoint Disk Property (DDP), all points of X are homological Z -points and X has the countable-dimensional approximation property (cd-AP), which means that each map f: KX of a compact polyhedron can be approximated by a map with the countable-dimensional image. As an application we prove that a space X with DDP and cd-AP is a Q-manifold if some finite power of X is a Q-manifold. If some finite power of a space X with cd-AP is a Q-manifold, then X 2 and X × [0, 1] are Q-manifolds as well. We construct a countable family χ of spaces with DDP and cd-AP such that no space Xχ is homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube Q whereas the product X × Y of any different spaces X, Yχ is homeomorphic to Q.
