We discuss three classes of closed curves in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ which have non-vanishing curvature and at least 4 flattenings (points at which the torsion vanishes). Calling these classes (de.ned below) Barner, Segre and Carathéodory, we prove that Barner $\subset$ (Segre $\cap$ Carathéodory). We also prove that (Segre)\ (Segre $\cap$ Carathéodory) and (Carathéodory)\(Segre $\cap$ Carathéodory) are open sets in the space of closed smooth curves with the C-topology. Finally, we define a class of closed curves containing the class of Segre curves and -based on contact topology considerations, as the Huygens principle- we establish the conjecture that any curve of our class has at least 4 flattenings.  相似文献

To any compact hyperbolic Riemann surface X, we associate a new type of automorphism group — called its commensurability automorphism group, ComAut(X). The members of ComAut(X) arise from closed circuits, starting and ending at X, where the edges represent holomorphic covering maps amongst compact connected Riemann surfaces (and the vertices represent the covering surfaces). This group turns out to be the isotropy subgroup, at the point represented by X (in $ T_\infty $), for the action of the universal commensurability modular group on the universal direct limit of Teichmüller spaces, $ T_\infty $. Now, each point of $ T_\infty $ represents a complex structure on the universal hyperbolic solenoid. We notice that ComAut(X) acts by holomorphic automorphisms on that complex solenoid. Interestingly, this action turns out to be ergodic (with respect to the natural measure on the solenoid) if and only if the Fuchsian group uniformizing X is arithmetic. Furthermore, the action of the commensurability modular group, and of its isotropy subgroups, on some natural vector bundles over $ T_\infty $, are studied by us.  相似文献

This paper concerns Floer homology for periodic orbits and for a Lagrangian intersection problem on the cotangent bundle T* M of a compact orientable manifold M. The first result is a new L estimate for the solutions of the Floer equation, which allows us to deal with a larger—and more natural—class of Hamiltonians. The second and main result is a new construction of the isomorphism between the Floer homology and the singular homology of the free loop space of M in the periodic case, or of the based loop space of M in the Lagrangian intersection problem. The idea for the construction of such an isomorphism is to consider a Hamiltonian that is the Legendre transform of a Lagrangian on T M and to construct an isomorphism between the Floer complex and the Morse complex of the classical Lagrangian action functional on the space of W1,2 free or based loops on M. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this note, we construct an example of a locally compact abelian group G = C × D (where C is a compact group and D is a discrete group) and a closed pure subgroup of G having nonpure annihilator in the Pontrjagin dual $\hat{G}$, answering a question raised by Hartman and Hulanicki. A simple proof of the following result is given: Suppose ${\frak K}$ is a class of locally compact abelian groups such that $G \in {\frak K}$ implies that $\hat{G} \in {\frak K}$ and nG is closed in G for each positive integer n. If H is a closed subgroup of a group $G \in {\frak K}$, then H is topologically pure in G exactly if the annihilator of H is topologically pure in $\hat{G}$. This result extends a theorem of Hartman and Hulanicki.Received: 4 April 2002  相似文献

For a complete Riemannian manifold M with compact boundary ∂M denote by $\Cut$ the cut locus of $\f M$ in M. The rolling radius of M is roll(M)≔ dist(∂M, ? M ). Let Focal(∂M) be the focal distance of ∂M in M. Then conditions are given that imply the equality roll(M)= Focal(∂M). This generalizes Blaschke's rolling theorem from bounded convex domains in Euclidean space to more general Euclidean domains and to Riemannian manifolds with boundary. The notion of a Morse index of a function on a finite-dimensional manifold cannot be generalized directly to the symplectic action function a on the loop space of a manifold. In this paper, we define for any pair of critical points of a a relative Morse index, which corresponds to the difference of the two Morse indices in finite dimensions. It is based on the spectral flow of the Hessian of a and can be identified with a topological invariant recently defined by Viterbo, and with the dimension of the space of trajectories between the two critical points.  相似文献

Let be an n-dimensional submanifold in an (n + p)-dimensional unit sphere S n + p , M is called a Willmore submanifold (see [11], [16]) if it is a critical submanifold to the Willmore functional , where is the square of the length of the second fundamental form, H is the mean curvature of M. In [11], the second author proved an integral inequality of Simons’ type for n-dimensional compact Willmore submanifolds in S n + p . In this paper, we discover that a similar integral inequality of Simons’ type still holds for the critical submanifolds of the functional . Moreover, it has the advantage that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation is simpler than the Willmore equation.  相似文献

Let Mn be a closed Riemannian manifold with a nontrivial second homology group. In this paper we prove that there exists a geodesic net on Mn of length at most 3 diameter(Mn). Moreover, this geodesic net is either a closed geodesic, consists of two geodesic loops emanating from the same point, or consists of three geodesic segments between the same endpoints. Geodesic nets can be viewed as the critical points of the length functional on the space of graphs immersed into a Riemannian manifold. One can also consider other natural functionals on the same space, in particular, the maximal length of an edge. We prove that either there exists a closed geodesic of length ≤ 2 diameter(Mn), or there exists a critical point of this functional on the space of immersed θ-graphs such that the value of the functional does not exceed the diameter of Mn. If n=2, then this critical θ-graph is not only immersed but embedded.Mathematics Subject Classifications (2000). 53C23, 49Q10  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the relation of the Morse index of a closed geodesic with the Maslov–type index of a path in a symplectic group. More precisely, for a closed geodesic c on a Riemannian manifold M with its linear Poincaré map P (a symplectic matrix), we construct a symplectic path γ(t) starting from identity I and ending at P, such that the Morse index of the closed geodesic c equals the Maslov–type index of γ. As an application of this result, we study the parity of the Morse index of any closed geodesic. Project 10071040 supported by NNSF, 200014 supported by Excellent. The main results of this note consist in the following two geometric finiteness theorems for diffeomorphism types and homotopy groups of closed simply connected manifolds: 1. For any given numbers C and D the class of closed smooth simply connected manifolds of dimension which admit Riemannian metrics with sectional curvature bounded in absolute value by $\vert K \vert\le C$ and diameter bounded from above by D contains at most finitely many diffeomorphism types. In each dimension there exist counterexamples to the preceding statement. 2. For any given numbers C and D and any dimension m there exist for each natural number up to isomorphism always at most finitely many groups which can occur as the k-th homotopy group of a closed smooth simply connected m-manifold which admits a metric with sectional curvature and diameter . In this paper, we try to generalize to the case of compact Riemannian orbifolds Q some classical results about the existence of closed geodesics of positive length on compact Riemannian manifolds M. We shall also consider the problem of the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct closed geodesics. In the classical case the solution of those problems involve the consideration of the homotopy groups of M and the homology properties of the free loop space on M (Morse theory). Those notions have their analogue in the case of orbifolds. The main part of this paper will be to recall those notions and to show how the classical techniques can be adapted to the case of orbifolds.  相似文献

Fix a smooth very ample curve C on a K3 or abelian surface X. Let $ \mathcal{M} $ denote the moduli space of pairs of the form (F, s), where F is a stable sheaf over X whose Hilbert polynomial coincides with that of the direct image, by the inclusion map of C in X, of a line bundle of degree d over C, and s is a nonzero section of F. Assume d to be sufficiently large such that F has a nonzero section. The pullback of the Mukai symplectic form on moduli spaces of stable sheaves over X is a holomorphic 2-form on $ \mathcal{M} $. On the other hand, $ \mathcal{M} $ has a map to a Hilbert scheme parametrizing 0-dimensional subschemes of X that sends (F, s) to the divisor, defined by s, on the curve defined by the support of F. We prove that the above 2-form on $ \mathcal{M} $ coincides with the pullback of the symplectic form on the Hilbert scheme.  相似文献

Consider the linear parabolic partial differential equation ${\mathcal {D}}_u\xi =0$ which arises by linearizing the heat flow on the loop space of a Riemannian manifold M. The solutions are vector fields along infinite cylinders u in M. For these solutions we establish regularity and a priori estimates. We show that for nondegenerate asymptotic boundary conditions the solutions decay exponentially in L2 in forward and backward time. In this case ${\mathcal {D}}_u$ viewed as linear operator from the parabolic Sobolev space ${\mathcal {W}}^{1,p}$ to Lp is Fredholm whenever p > 1. We close with an Lp estimate for products of first order terms which is a crucial ingredient in the sequel 13 to prove regularity and the implicit function theorem. The results of the present text are the base to construct in 13 an algebraic chain complex whose homology represents the homology of the loop space.  相似文献

We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin-Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.  相似文献

We get the characterizations of the family of all nonnegative, subadditive,β-absolutely homogeneous and continuous functionals defined on X, when the ;3-normed space X contains an asymptotically isometric copy of l^β. Moreover, it is proved that if a closed bounded β-convex subset K of a β-normed space contains an asymptotically isometric β-basis, then K contains a closed β-convex subset C which fails the fixed point property.  相似文献

This paper classifies Hermitian structures on 6-dimensional nilmanifolds $M=\Ga\bs G$ for which the fundamental 2-form is $\pd\opd$-closed, a condition that is shown to depend only on the underlying complex structure J of M. The space of such J is described when G is the complex Heisenberg group, and explicit solutions are obtained from a limaçon-shaped curve in the complex plane. Related theory is used to provide examples of various types of Ricci-flat structures.  相似文献

We deduce an upper bound for the Hausdorff distance between a nonempty bounded set and the set of all closed balls in a strictly convex straight geodesic space X of nonnegative curvature. We prove that the set $\chi \left[ {\rm M} \right]$ of centers of closed balls approximating a convex compact set in the Hausdorff metric in the best possible way is nonempty X [M] and is contained in M. Some other properties of $\chi \left[ {\rm M} \right]$ also are investigated.  相似文献
