The Spectral Function and Principal Eigenvalues for Schrödinger Operators

Let m , 0 m₊ in Kato's class. We investigate the spectral function s( + m) where s( + m) denotes the upper bound of the spectrum of the Schrödinger operator + m. In particular, we determine its derivative at 0. If m_- is sufficiently large, we show that there exists a unique ₁ > 0 such that s( + ₁m) = 0. Under suitable conditions on m⁺ it follows that 0 is an eigenvalue of + ₁m with positive eigenfunction.

Degenerate multidimensional dispersion laws

A study is made of the degeneracy of multidimensional dispersion laws (k) that increase unboundedly as k and satisfy some additional conditions. Under the assumption that the corresponding degeneracy functionf(k) satisfies a certain condition [Eq. (4)], it is shown that only two-dimensional dispersion laws of the form (p,q)=p ³(q/p)+cp(q/p)(|p|,|q|1), wherep(q/p)=f(p, q) is the corresponding unique degeneracy function, can be degenerate with respect to a 12 process. Some conditions that the function () must satisfy are obtained. Approximate Identities in Spaces of all Absolutely Continuous Measures on Locally Compact Semigroups

Let G be a locally compact group. Then M_a (G), the space of all absolutely continuous measures on G, has a bounded approximate identity. Baker and Baker proved that (S) (the space of all measures M(S) so that maps x _x *|| and x ||*_x are weak continuous from a locally compact semigroup S into M(S)) is closed under absolutely continuity and has an approximate identity. The main purpose of this paper is to show that similar results hold true for a locally compact semigroup S and M_a(S) the space of all absolutely continuous measures on S.

Linear Networks and Convex Polytopes

It is shown that the set [G,] of immersed linear networks in that are parallel to a given immersed linear network and have the same boundary as is a convex polyhedral subset of the configuration space of movable vertices of the graph G. The dimension of [G,] is calculated, and the number of its maximal faces is estimated. As an application, the spaces of all locally minimal and weighted minimal networks with fixed boundary and topology in are described. Bibliography: 21 titles.     

Testing for Unit Roots in a Nearly Nonstationary Spatial Autoregressive Process

The limiting distribution of the normalized periodogram ordinate is used to test for unit roots in the first-order autoregressive model _st= _s-1,t+_s,t-1- _s-1,t-1+_st. Moreover, for the sequence _n = e ^c/n , _n = e ^d/n of local Pitman-type alternatives, the limiting distribution of the normalized periodogram ordinate is shown to be a linear combination of two independent chi-square random variables whose coefficients depend on c and d. This result is used to tabulate the asymptotic power of a test for various values of c and d. A comparison is made between the periodogram test and a spatial domain test.     

Number of quasimodes of “bouncing-ball” type

A new two-scale expansion is proposed for eigenfunctions of bouncing-ball type and the corresponding eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with the Dirichlet condition in a domain of the plane. The eigenfunctions are concentrated in a neighborhood of a stable diameter of the domain and are numbered with two indices (p, q) where p is the number of longitudinal nodes and q the number of nodes in a direction orthogonal to the diameter. Positive Solutions for a Singular Nonlinear Problem on a Bounded Domain in R 2

For a bounded regular Jordan domain in R ², we introduce and study a new class of functions K() related on its Green function G. We exploit the properties of this class to prove the existence and the uniqueness of a positive solution for the singular nonlinear elliptic equation u+(x,u)=0, in D(), with u=0 on and uC(), where is a nonnegative Borel measurable function in ×(0,) that belongs to a convex cone which contains, in particular, all functions (x,t)=q(x)t ^–,>0 with nonnegative functions qK(). Some estimates on the solution are also given.
