We investigate a linear, fully coupled thermoelasticity problem for a highly heterogeneous, two‐phase medium. The medium in question consists of a connected matrix with disconnected, initially periodically distributed inclusions separated by a sharp interface undergoing an a priori known interface movement because of phase transformations. After transforming the moving geometry to an ? ‐periodic, fixed reference domain, we establish the well‐posedness of the model and derive a number of ? ‐independent a priori estimates. Via a two‐scale convergence argument, we then show that the ? ‐dependent solutions converge to solutions of a corresponding upscaled model with distributed time‐dependent microstructures. We consider the evolution of parametric curves by anisotropic mean curvature flow in ?n for an arbitrary n?2. After the introduction of a spatial discretization, we prove convergence estimates for the proposed finite‐element model. We study the long‐time behavior of kinetic equations in which transport and spatial confinement (in an exterior potential or in a box) are associated with a (degenerate) collision operator acting only in the velocity variable. We expose a general method, based on logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and the entropy, to overcome the well‐known problem, due to the degeneracy in the position variable, of the existence of infinitely many local equilibria. This method requires that the solution be somewhat smooth. In this paper, we apply it to the linear Fokker‐Planck equation and prove decay to equilibrium faster than O(t−1/ϵ) for all ϵ > 0. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We consider multigraphs G for which equality holds in Vizing's classical edge colouring bound χ′(G)≤Δ + µ, where Δ denotes the maximum degree and µ denotes the maximum edge multiplicity of G. We show that if µ is bounded below by a logarithmic function of Δ, then G attains Vizing's bound if and only if there exists an odd subset S?V(G) with |S|≥3, such that |E[S]|>((|S| ? 1)/2)(Δ + µ ? 1). The famous Goldberg–Seymour conjecture states that this should hold for all µ≥2. We also prove a similar result concerning the edge colouring bound χ′(G)≤Δ + ?µ/?g/2??, due to Steffen (here g denotes the girth of the underlying graph). In this paper, we address a simplified version of a problem arising from volcanology. Specifically, as a reduced form of the boundary value problem for the Lamé system, we consider a Neumann problem for harmonic functions in the half‐space with a cavity C. Zero normal derivative is assumed at the boundary of the half‐space; differently, at ?C, the normal derivative of the function is required to be given by an external datum g, corresponding to a pressure term exerted on the medium at ?C. Under the assumption that the (pressurized) cavity is small with respect to the distance from the boundary of the half‐space, we establish an asymptotic formula for the solution of the problem. Main ingredients are integral equation formulations of the harmonic solution of the Neumann problem and a spectral analysis of the integral operators involved in the problem. In this note we deal with rational curves in ? 3 which are images of a line by means of a finite sequence of cubo-cubic Cremona transformations. We prove that these curves can always be obtained applying to the line a sequence of such transformations increasing at each step the degree of the curve. In this article, we explore the multiplicative quasi-adequate transversals of an abundant semigroup. Let S be an abundant semigroup with multiplicative quasi-adequate transversals. Then the product of any two multiplicative quasi-adequate transversals is also a multiplicative quasi-adequate transversal. Moreover, all multiplicative quasi-adequate transversals of S form a rectangular band. Let S°and S ? be multiplicative quasi-adequate transversals of S, and let δ°(δ?) be the δ-relation on S°(S ?). Then there exists a bijection ? from S°/δ°onto S ??. In particular, if δ°and δ? are congruences, then the bijection ? is an isomorphism.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article we investigate unnormalized samples of Gaussian random elements in a separable Fréchet space 𝕄. First we describe a connection between shifts of a Gaussian measure μ in a separable Fréchet space and the infinite product of standard normal distributions in ?, and on the basis of this result we derive the so‐called self‐sufficient expansion for Gaussian random elements in a Fréchet space. Moreover, we find lower bounds for the Gaussian measure μ of shifted balls in 𝕄 and estimate the metric entropy of balls in the Hilbert space ? ? 𝕄 which generates μ. Finally, applying the Brunn–Minkowski inequality we prove a kind of the logarithmic law of large numbers. The last result is an extension of the analogous theorem obtained by Goodman (Characteristics of normal samples. Ann. Probab. 1988, 16, 1281–1290), for a sequence of Gaussian random elements in a separable Banach space.  相似文献

We address various channel assignment problems on the Cayley graphs of certain groups, computing the frequency spans by applying group theoretic techniques. In particular, we show that if G is the Cayley graph of an n‐generated group Γ with a certain kind of presentation, then λ(G;k, 1)≤2(k+n?1). For certain values of k this bound gives the obvious optimal value for any 2n‐regular graph. In this work we analyse the asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linearized elasticity eigenvalue problem of curved rod‐like bodies with respect to the small thickness ? of the rod. We show that the eigenfunctions and scaled eigenvalues converge, as ? tends to zero, toward eigenpairs of the eigenvalue problem associated to the one‐dimensional curved rod model which is posed on the middle curve of the rod. Because of the auxiliary function appearing in the model, describing the rotation angle of the cross‐sections, the limit eigenvalue problem is non‐classical. This problem is transformed into a classical eigenvalue problem with eigenfunctions being inextensible displacements, but the corresponding linear operator is not a differential operator. We introduce a suitable notion of eight‐shaped curve in the product S × ? of a Suslin line S for the real line ?, and we prove that if S is dense in itself, then every collection of pairwise disjoint eight‐shaped curves in S × ? is countable. We consider Bessel‐potential spaces modelled upon Lorentz‐Karamata spaces and establish embedding theorems in the super‐limiting case. In addition, we refine a result due to Triebel, in the context of Bessel‐potential spaces, itself an improvement of the Brézis‐Wainger result (super‐limiting case) about the “almost Lipschitz continuity” of elements of H1+n/pp (?n). These results improve and extend results due to Edmunds, Gurka and Opic in the context of logarithmic Bessel potential spaces. We develop and analyze a negative norm least‐squares method for the compressible Stokes equations with an inflow boundary condition. Least‐squares principles are derived for a first‐order form of the equations obtained by using ω = ?×u and φ = ? · u as new dependent variables. The resulting problem is incompletely elliptic, i.e., it combines features of elliptic and hyperbolic equations. As a result, well‐posedness of least‐squares functionals cannot be established using the ADN elliptic theory and so we use direct approaches to prove their norm‐equivalence. We consider a singularly perturbed Dirichlet spectral problem for an elliptic operator of second order. The coefficients of the operator are assumed to be locally periodic and oscillating in the scale ? . We describe the leading terms of the asymptotics of the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions to the problem, as the parameter ? tends to zero, under structural assumptions on the potential. More precisely, we assume that the local average of the potential has a unique global minimum point in the interior of the domain and its Hessian is non‐degenerate at this point. We study the dynamics of an incompressible, homogeneous fluid of a power‐law type, with the stress tensor T = ν(1 + µ|Dv|)p?2Dv, where Dv is a symmetric velocity gradient. We consider the two‐dimensional problem with periodic boundary conditions and p ∈ (1, 2). In this article, we investigate the semistability of logarithmic de Rham sheaves on a smooth projective variety (X, D), under suitable conditions. This is related to existence of Kähler–Einstein metric on the open variety. We investigate this problem when the Picard number is one. Fix a normal crossing divisor D on X and consider the logarithmic de Rham sheaf Ω X (log D) on X. We prove semistability of this sheaf, when the log canonical sheaf K X  + D is ample or trivial, or when ?K X  ? D is ample, i.e., when X is a log Fano n-fold of dimension n ≤ 6. We also extend the semistability result for Kawamata coverings, and this gives examples whose Picard number can be greater than one.  相似文献

Superconvergence approximations of singularly perturbed two‐point boundary value problems of reaction‐diffusion type and convection‐diffusion type are studied. By applying the standard finite element method of any fixed order p on a modified Shishkin mesh, superconvergence error bounds of (N?1 ln (N + 1))p+1 in a discrete energy norm in approximating problems with the exponential type boundary layers are established. The error bounds are uniformly valid with respect to the singular perturbation parameter. We study the model of directed polymers in a random environment in 1 + 1 dimensions, where the distribution at a site has a tail that decays regularly polynomially with power α, where α ∈ (0,2). After proper scaling of temperature β−1, we show strong localization of the polymer to a favorable region in the environment where energy and entropy are best balanced. We prove that this region has a weak limit under linear scaling and identify the limiting distribution as an (α, β)‐indexed family of measures on Lipschitz curves lying inside the 45°‐rotated square with unit diagonal. In particular, this shows order‐n transversal fluctuations of the polymer. If, and only if, α is small enough, we find that there exists a random critical temperature below which, but not above which, the effect of the environment is macroscopic. The results carry over to d + 1 dimensions for d > 1 with minor modifications. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a nonlocal mixed problem for a nonlinear hyperbolic equation. Based on some a priori estimates and some density arguments, we prove the well posedness of the associated linear problem. The existence and uniqueness of the weak solution of the nonlinear problem are then established by applying an iterative process based on the obtained results for the linear problem. We analyze the behavior of solutions of steady advection‐diffusion problems in bounded domains with prescribed Dirichlet data when the Péclet number Pe ? 1 is large. We show that the solution converges to a constant in each flow cell outside a boundary layer of width O(?1/2), ? = Pe?1, around the flow separatrices. We construct an ?‐dependent approximate “water pipe problem” purely inside the boundary layer that provides a good approximation of the solution of the full problem but has ?‐independent computational cost. We also define an asymptotic problem on the graph of streamline separatrices and show that solution of the water pipe problem itself may be approximated by an asymptotic, ?‐independent problem on this graph. Finally, we show that the Dirichlet‐to‐Neumann map of the water pipe problem approximates the Dirichlet‐to‐Neumann map of the separatrix problem with an error independent of the flow outside the boundary layers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献
