We analyse the evolution of a system of finite faults by considering the non‐linear eigenvalue problems associated to static and dynamic solutions on unbounded domains. We restrict our investigation to the first eigenvalue (Rayleigh quotient). We point out its physical significance through a stability analysis and we give an efficient numerical algorithm able to compute it together with the corresponding eigenfunction. We consider the anti‐plane shearing on a system of finite faults under a slip‐dependent friction in a linear elastic domain, not necessarily bounded. The static problem is formulated in terms of local minima of the energy functional. We introduce the non‐linear (static) eigenvalue problem and we prove the existence of a first eigenvalue/eigenfunction characterizing the isolated local minima. For the dynamic problem, we discuss the existence of solutions with an exponential growth, to deduce a (dynamic) non‐linear eigenvalue problem. We prove the existence of a first dynamic eigenvalue and we analyse its behaviour with respect to the friction parameter. We deduce a mixed finite element discretization of the non‐linear spectral problem and we give a numerical algorithm to approach the first eigenvalue/eigenfunction. Finally we give some numerical results which include convergence tests, on a single fault and a two‐faults system, and a comparison between the non‐linear spectral results and the time evolution results. An extremal property of the eigenvalue of an irreducible matrix in idempotent algebra is studied. It is shown that this value is the minimum value of some functional defined using this matrix on the set of vectors with nonzero components. The minimax problem of location of a single facility (the Rawls problem) on a plane with rectilinear distance is considered. For this problem, we give the corresponding representation in terms of idempotent algebra and suggest a new algebraic solution, which is based on the results of investigation of the extremal property of eigenvalue and reduces to finding the eigenvalue and eigenvectors of a certain matrix.  相似文献

Summary. According to the methodology of [6], many measures of distance arising in problems in numerical linear algebra and control can be bounded by a factor times the reciprocal of an appropriate condition number, where the distance is thought of as the distance between a given problem to the nearest ill-posed problem. In this paper, four major problems in numerical linear algebra and control are further considered: the computation of system Hessenberg form, the solution of the algebraic Riccati equation, the pole assignment problem and the matrix exponential. The FEAST eigenvalue algorithm is a subspace iteration algorithm that uses contour integration to obtain the eigenvectors of a matrix for the eigenvalues that are located in any user‐defined region in the complex plane. By computing small numbers of eigenvalues in specific regions of the complex plane, FEAST is able to naturally parallelize the solution of eigenvalue problems by solving for multiple eigenpairs simultaneously. The traditional FEAST algorithm is implemented by directly solving collections of shifted linear systems of equations; in this paper, we describe a variation of the FEAST algorithm that uses iterative Krylov subspace algorithms for solving the shifted linear systems inexactly. We show that this iterative FEAST algorithm (which we call IFEAST) is mathematically equivalent to a block Krylov subspace method for solving eigenvalue problems. By using Krylov subspaces indirectly through solving shifted linear systems, rather than directly using them in projecting the eigenvalue problem, it becomes possible to use IFEAST to solve eigenvalue problems using very large dimension Krylov subspaces without ever having to store a basis for those subspaces. IFEAST thus combines the flexibility and power of Krylov methods, requiring only matrix–vector multiplication for solving eigenvalue problems, with the natural parallelism of the traditional FEAST algorithm. We discuss the relationship between IFEAST and more traditional Krylov methods and provide numerical examples illustrating its behavior.  相似文献

In applications of linear algebra including nuclear physics and structural dynamics, there is a need to deal with uncertainty in the matrices. We focus on matrices that depend on a set of parameters ω and we are interested in the minimal eigenvalue of a matrix pencil ( A , B ) with A , B symmetric and B positive definite. If ω can be interpreted as the realization of random variables, one may be interested in statistical moments of the minimal eigenvalue. In order to obtain statistical moments, we need a fast evaluation of the eigenvalue as a function of ω . Because this is costly for large matrices, we are looking for a small parameterized eigenvalue problem whose minimal eigenvalue makes a small error with the minimal eigenvalue of the large eigenvalue problem. The advantage, in comparison with a global polynomial approximation (on which, e.g., the polynomial chaos approximation relies), is that we do not suffer from the possible nonsmoothness of the minimal eigenvalue. The small‐scale eigenvalue problem is obtained by projection of the large‐scale problem. Our main contribution is that, for constructing the subspace, we use multiple eigenvectors and derivatives of eigenvectors. We provide theoretical results and document numerical experiments regarding the beneficial effect of adding multiple eigenvectors and derivatives.  相似文献

Finding the maximum eigenvalue of a symmetric tensor is an important topic in tensor computation and numerical multilinear algebra. In this paper, we introduce a new class of structured tensors called W‐tensors, which not only extends the well‐studied nonnegative tensors by allowing negative entries but also covers several important tensors arising naturally from spectral hypergraph theory. We then show that finding the maximum H‐eigenvalue of an even‐order symmetric W‐tensor is equivalent to solving a structured semidefinite program and hence can be validated in polynomial time. This yields a highly efficient semidefinite program algorithm for computing the maximum H‐eigenvalue of W‐tensors and is based on a new structured sums‐of‐squares decomposition result for a nonnegative polynomial induced by W‐tensors. Numerical experiments illustrate that the proposed algorithm can successfully find the maximum H‐eigenvalue of W‐tensors with dimension up to 10,000, subject to machine precision. As applications, we provide a polynomial time algorithm for computing the maximum H‐eigenvalues of large‐size Laplacian tensors of hyperstars and hypertrees, where the algorithm can be up to 13 times faster than the state‐of‐the‐art numerical method introduced by Ng, Qi, and Zhou in 2009. Finally, we also show that the proposed algorithm can be used to test the copositivity of a multivariate form associated with symmetric extended Z‐tensors, whose order may be even or odd.  相似文献

This paper considers the problem of constructing a Jacobi matrix from prescribed ordered defective eigenpairs and the leading principal submatrix. According to the relationship between the eigenvalue ordered and the number of variations in signs of the corresponding eigenvector, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of the problem are derived, and the numerical algorithm is developed. Numerical examples show that the algorithm is quite efficient.  相似文献

It is commonplace in many application domains to utilize polynomial eigenvalue problems to model the behaviour of physical systems. Many techniques exist to compute solutions of these polynomial eigenvalue problems. One of the most frequently used techniques is linearization, in which the polynomial eigenvalue problem is turned into an equivalent linear eigenvalue problem with the same eigenvalues, and with easily recoverable eigenvectors. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the linearization are usually computed using a backward stable solver such as the QZ algorithm. Such backward stable algorithms ensure that the computed eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the linearization are exactly those of a nearby linear pencil, where the perturbations are bounded in terms of the machine precision and the norms of the matrices defining the linearization. Although we have solved a nearby linear eigenvalue problem, we are not certain that our computed solution is in fact the exact solution of a nearby polynomial eigenvalue problem. Here, we perform a backward error analysis for the solution of a specific linearization for polynomials expressed in the monomial basis. We use a suitable one-sided factorization of the linearization that allows us to map generic perturbations of the linearization onto structured perturbations of the polynomial coefficients. We consider an iteration algorithm for calculating eigenvalue curves of the linear algebraic twoparameter spectral problem, which uses an algorithm for calculating all eigenvalues in a given domain of variation in spectral parameters based on an efficient numerical technique for calculating derivatives of the determinant of a matrix. We propose a numerical method for computing all eigenvalues (and the corresponding eigenvectors) of a nonlinear holomorphic eigenvalue problem that lie within a given contour in the complex plane. The method uses complex integrals of the resolvent operator, applied to at least k column vectors, where k is the number of eigenvalues inside the contour. The theorem of Keldysh is employed to show that the original nonlinear eigenvalue problem reduces to a linear eigenvalue problem of dimension k. No initial approximations of eigenvalues and eigenvectors are needed. The method is particularly suitable for moderately large eigenvalue problems where k is much smaller than the matrix dimension. We also give an extension of the method to the case where k is larger than the matrix dimension. The quadrature errors caused by the trapezoid sum are discussed for the case of analytic closed contours. Using well known techniques it is shown that the error decays exponentially with an exponent given by the product of the number of quadrature points and the minimal distance of the eigenvalues to the contour.  相似文献

A basic problem in linear algebra is the determination of the largest eigenvalue (Perron root) of a positive matrix. In the present paper a new differential equation method for finding the Perron root is given. Recent progress in signal processing and estimation has generated considerable interest in the problem of computing the smallest eigenvalue of a symmetric positive‐definite (SPD) Toeplitz matrix. An algorithm for computing upper and lower bounds to the smallest eigenvalue of a SPD Toeplitz matrix has been recently derived (Linear Algebra Appl. 2007; DOI: 10.1016/j.laa.2007.05.008 ). The algorithm relies on the computation of the R factor of the QR factorization of the Toeplitz matrix and the inverse of R. The simultaneous computation of R and R?1 is efficiently accomplished by the generalized Schur algorithm. In this paper, exploiting the properties of the latter algorithm, a numerical method to compute the smallest eigenvalue and the corresponding eigenvector of SPD Toeplitz matrices in an accurate way is proposed. We show under very general assumptions that error bounds for an individual eigenvector of a matrix can be computed if and only if the geometric multiplicity of the corresponding eigenvalue is one. Basically, this is true if not computing exactly like in computer algebra methods. We first show, under general assumptions, that nontrivial error bounds are not possible in case of geometric multiplicity greater than one. This result is also extended to symmetric, Hermitian and, more general, to normal matrices. Then we present an algorithm for the computation of error bounds for the (up to normalization) unique eigenvector in case of geometric multiplicity one. The connection between Gauss quadrature rules and the algebraic eigenvalue problem for a Jacobi matrix was first exploited in the now classical paper by Golub and Welsch (Math. Comput. 23(106), 221–230, 1969). From then on many computational problems arising in the construction of (polynomial) Gauss quadrature formulas have been reduced to solving direct and inverse eigenvalue problems for symmetric tridiagonals. Over the last few years (rational) generalizations of the classical Gauss quadrature formulas have been studied, i.e., formulas integrating exactly in spaces of rational functions. This paper wants to illustrate that stable and efficient procedures based on structured numerical linear algebra techniques can also be devised for the solution of the eigenvalue problems arising in the field of rational Gauss quadrature.  相似文献

The behaviour of a discrete-event dynamic system is often conveniently described using a matrix algebra with operations max and plus. Such a system moves forward in regular steps of length equal to the eigenvalue of the system matrix, if it is set to operate at time instants corresponding to one of its eigenvectors. However, due to imprecise measurements, it is often unappropriate to use exact matrices. One possibility to model imprecision is to use interval matrices. We show that the problem to decide whether a given vector is an eigenvector of one of the matrices in the given matrix interval is polynomial, while the complexity of the existence problem of a universal eigenvector remains open. As an aside, we propose a combinatorial method for solving two-sided systems of linear equations over the max–plus algebra.  相似文献

We introduce the quadratic two-parameter eigenvalue problem and linearize it as a singular two-parameter eigenvalue problem. This, together with an example from model updating, shows the need for numerical methods for singular two-parameter eigenvalue problems and for a better understanding of such problems.There are various numerical methods for two-parameter eigenvalue problems, but only few for nonsingular ones. We present a method that can be applied to singular two-parameter eigenvalue problems including the linearization of the quadratic two-parameter eigenvalue problem. It is based on the staircase algorithm for the extraction of the common regular part of two singular matrix pencils.  相似文献

The critical delays of a delay‐differential equation can be computed by solving a nonlinear two‐parameter eigenvalue problem. The solution of this two‐parameter problem can be translated to solving a quadratic eigenvalue problem of squared dimension. We present a structure preserving QR‐type method for solving such quadratic eigenvalue problem that only computes real‐valued critical delays; that is, complex critical delays, which have no physical meaning, are discarded. For large‐scale problems, we propose new correction equations for a Newton‐type or Jacobi–Davidson style method, which also forces real‐valued critical delays. We present three different equations: one real‐valued equation using a direct linear system solver, one complex valued equation using a direct linear system solver, and one Jacobi–Davidson style correction equation that is suitable for an iterative linear system solver.
