Several nonlinear phenomena have shown to have significant effect on the electromechanical performance of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) based nanoelectromechanical (NEMS) devices. To name few: the van der Waals forces, the Casimir forces, the tip charge concentration and the rippling phenomenon. Some of these effects have been take care of in previous investigation; however, some have been disregarded in the mechanical models suggested for simulation of the SWCNT based structures. In this paper, the influence of rippling deformation on the vibration characteristics of SWCNT based actuators is investigated using a nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli beam theory that incorporates the effect of rippling deformation using an improved function including some correcting terms for the SWCNT curvature (rippling deformation). The influence of the Casimir and the van der Waals attraction forces are considered in the proposed model as well as the size-dependent behavior assuming the so-called Eringen nonlocal elasticity theory. The dynamic response of CNT is investigated based on time history and phase portrait plots of the CNT based nano-actuator. It is shown that the rippling deformation can significantly decrease the static as well as the dynamic pull-in voltage of the SWCNT based actuator. The rippling deformation of SWCNT decreases the dynamic pull-in time as well. Effect of various factors such as the DC actuation load and the Casimir attractive forces on the dynamic stability and the pull-in characteristics of the nano-actuator are examined. Results of the present study are beneficial to accurate design and fabrication of electromechanical CNT based actuators. Comparison between the obtained results and those reported in the literature by experiments and molecular dynamics, verifies the integrity of the present numerical analysis.  相似文献

A multiple-elastic beam model based on Euler-Bernoulli-beam theory is presented to investigate the nonlinear dynamic instability of double-walled nanotubes. Taking the geometric nonlinearity of structure deformation, the effects of van der Waals forces as well as the non- coaxial curvature of each nested tube into account, the nonlinear parametric vibration governing equations are derived. Numerical results indicate that the double-walled nanotube (DWNT) can be considered as a single column when the van der Waals forces are sufficiently strong. The stiffness of medium could substantially reduce the area of the nonlinear dynamic instability region, in particular, the geometric nonlinearity can be out of account when the stiffness is large enough. The area of the principal nonlinear instability region and its shifting distance aroused by the nonlinearity both decrease with the increment of the aspect ratio of the nanotubes.  相似文献

In this paper, the dynamic stability of single- and double-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT and DWCNT) under dynamic axial loading is investigated using the continuum mechanics model and the minimum total energy method. The natural frequencies of the SWCNT and the critical dynamic axial load of the SWCNT and DWCNT are obtained using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The effects of the elastic medium and the van der Waals forces between the two layers in the DWCNT are taken into account using the Winkler model and Lennard-Jones theory, respectively. The effect of the small length scale is also considered using the Eringen Model. The critical dynamic axial load is increased by inserting an inner carbon nanotube (CNT) into an isolated CNT embedded in an elastic medium.  相似文献

In this work the voltage response of primary resonance of electrostatically actuated single wall carbon nano tubes (SWCNT) cantilevers over a parallel ground plate is investigated. Three forces act on the SWCNT cantilever, namely electrostatic, van der Waals and damping. While the damping is linear, the electrostatic and van der Waals forces are nonlinear. Moreover, the electrostatic force is also parametric since it is given by AC voltage. Under these forces the dynamics of the SWCNT is nonlinear parametric. The van der Waals force is significant for values less than 50 nm of the gap between the SWCNT and the ground substrate. Reduced order model method (ROM) is used to investigate the system under soft excitation and weak nonlinearities. The voltage-amplitude response and influences of parameters are reported for primary resonance (AC near half natural frequency).  相似文献

An elastic double-shell model based on continuum mechanics is presented to study the dynamic torsional buckling of an embedded double-walled carbon nanotube. Based on the presented model, a condition is derived to predict the buckling load of the embedded double-walled nanotube, and the effect of the van der Waals forces to the buckling load is discussed when an inner nanotube is inserted into an embedded outer one. In particular, the paper shows that the buckling load of the embedded double-walled nanotube is always between that of the isolated inner nanotube and that of the embedded outer nanotube for both dynamic and static torsional buckling, due to the effect of the van der Waals forces. This result is different from that obtained by the existing analysis neglecting the difference of the radii for the embedded double-walled nanotube, which indicates that disregarding the difference of the radii of multi-walled nanotubes cannot properly describe the effect of the van der Waals forces between interlayer spacing. In particular, for static torsional buckling of a double-walled nanotube, it is shown that the critical buckling load cannot only be enhanced, but also be reduced when inserting an inner nanotube into an isolated single-walled one. Additionally, it is shown that the elastic medium always increases the critical buckling load of double-walled nanotubes. The critical buckling load of embedded double-walled nanotubes for dynamic torsional buckling is proved to be no less than that for static torsional buckling.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate both pre- and post-buckling behaviors of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and multi-walled carbon nanopeapods by incorporating into the applied forces of a prescribed beam equation both van der Waals interactions between the adjacent walls of the nanotubes and the interactions between the fullerenes and the inner wall of the nanotube. Two beam theories are employed. First, we utilize Donnell’s equilibrium equation to derive an axial stability condition for the multi-walled carbon nanotubes and multi-walled carbon nanopeapods. We then determine analytically the critical forces for single-walled and double-walled nanotubes and nanopeapods. Given the outer nanotube of a fixed radius, we observe that the critical force and strain derived from the axial buckling stability criterion decrease as a result of the molecular interactions between the adjacent layers of the nanotubes and the molecular interactions between the embedded fullerenes and the inner carbon nanotube, which is in agreement with existing literature. Next, we utilize an Euler–Bernoulli beam equation incorporating the curvature effect to obtain the post-buckled axial bending displacement for the multi-walled nanotubes and nanopeapods. We find that the interactions between molecules generate an inward force, which tends to resist any applied forces. While the inward force induced by the fullerenes to the inner wall of the nanotube vanishes as we increase the applied force, the inward force induced by the layers increases as the applied force increases. The main contribution of this paper is the incorporation of both van der Waals interactions and the curvature effect into prescribed beam theories to accurately measure the critical forces and the buckled displacements of multi-walled nanotubes and nanopeapods subject to a small external force. Our analysis is relevant to future nano devices, such as biological sensors and measuring devices for small forces arising from electrical charges or Casimir forces.  相似文献

An approximate method is presented in this paper for studying the dynamic buckling of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) under step axial load. The analysis is based on the continuum mechanics model, which takes into account the van der Waals interaction between the outer and inner nanotubes. A buckling condition is derived, from which the critical buckling load and associated buckling mode can be determined. As examples, numerical results are worked out for DWNTs under fixed boundary conditions. It is shown that, due to the effect of van der Waals forces, the critical buckling load of a DWNT is enhanced when inserting an inner tube into a single-walled one. The paper indicates that the critical buckling load of DWNTs for dynamic buckling is higher than that for static buckling. The effect of the radii is also examined. In addition, some of the results are compared with the previous ones.  相似文献

The stability characteristics of an ultra-thin layer of a viscous liquid flowing down a cylindrical fibre are investigated by a linear theory. The film with the thickness less than 100 nm is driven by an external force and under the influence of the van der Waals forces. The results show that, when the relative film thickness decreases, the curvature of the fibre depresses the development of the linear perturbations, whereas the van der Waals forces promote the instabilities. This competition results in a non-monotonous dependence of the growth rate on the relative film thickness. The critical curves are also obtained to describe the transition from the absolute instability to the convective instability, indicating that the van der Waals forces can enlarge the absolutely unstable region. Furthermore, the surface tension can cause the development of the absolute instability, whereas the external force has an opposite effect.  相似文献

The thermal effect on axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube is studied in this paper. The effects of temperature change, surrounding elastic medium and van der Waals forces between the inner and outer nanotubes are taken into account. Using continuum mechanics, an elastic double-shell model with thermal effect is presented for axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube embedded in an elastic matrix under thermal environment. Based on the model, an explicit formula for the critical axial stress is derived in terms of the buckling modes of the shell and the parameters that indicate the effects of temperature change, surrounding elastic medium and the van der Waals forces. Based on that, some simplified analysis is carried out to estimate the critical axial stress for axially compressed buckling of the double-walled carbon nanotube. Numerical results for the general case are obtained for the thermal effect on axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube. It is shown that the axial buckling load of double-walled carbon nanotube under thermal loads is dependent on the wave number of axially buckling modes. And a conclusion is drawn that at low and room temperature the critical axial stress for infinitesimal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube increase as the value of temperature change increases, while at high temperature the critical axial stress for infinitesimal buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube decrease as the value of temperature change increases.  相似文献

The buckling behavior of perfect and defective double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) under axial compressive, torsional and bending loadings is investigated using a structural mechanics model. The effects of van der Waals (vdW) forces are further modeled using a nonlinear spring element. Critical buckling loads, critical buckling moments and the effects of vacancy defects were studied for armchair nanotubes with various aspect ratios. The results show that vacancy defects greatly reduce the critical buckling load of DWCNTs. The density of defects plays an important role in buckling of DWCNTs. The results of this numerical model are in good agreement with their comparable existing works.  相似文献

The capability of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in efficient transporting of drug molecules into the biological cells has been the focus of attention of various scientific disciplines during the past decade. From applied mechanics points of view, translocation of a nanoparticle inside the pore of a CNT would result in vibrations. The true understanding of the interactive forces between the moving nanoparticle and the inner surface of the CNT is a vital step in factual realization of such vibrations. Herein, by employing the nonlocal Rayleigh beam theory, nonlinear vibrations of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as nanoparticle delivery nanodevices are studied. The existing van der Waals interactional forces between the constitutive atoms of the nanoparticle and those of the SWCNT, frictional force, and both longitudinal and transverse inertial effects of the moving nanoparticle are taken into account in the proposed model. The nonlinear-nonlocal governing equations are explicitly obtained and then numerically solved using Galerkin method and a finite difference scheme in the space and time domains, respectively. The roles of the velocity and mass weight of the nanoparticle, small-scale effect, slenderness ratio, and vdW force on the maximum longitudinal and transverse displacements as well as the maximum nonlocal axial force and bending moment within the SWCNT are examined. In general, the obtained results reveal that the nonlinear analysis should be performed when the nanotube structure is traversed by a moving nanoparticle with high levels of the mass weight and velocity.  相似文献

The linear bifurcation theory is used to investigate the stability of soft thin films bonded to curved substrates. It is found that such a film can spontaneously lose its stability due to van der Waals or electrostatic interaction when its thickness reduces to the order of microns or nanometers. We first present the generic method for analyzing the surface stability of a thin film interacting with the substrate and then discuss several important geometric configurations with either a positive or negative mean curvature. The critical conditions for the onset of spontaneous instability in these representative examples are established analytically. Besides the surface energy and Poisson's ratio of the thin film, the curvature of the substrate is demonstrated to have a significant influence on the wrinkling behavior of the film. The results suggest that one may fabricate nanopatterns or enhance the surface stability of soft thin films on curved solid surfaces by modulating the mechanical properties of the films and/or such geometrical properties as film thickness and substrate curvature. This study can also help to understand various phenomena associated with surface instability.  相似文献

An analytical method is proposed to accurately estimate the pull-in parameters of a micro- or nanocantilever beam elastically constrained by a rotational spring at one end. The system is actuated by electrostatic force and subject to Casimir or van der Waals forces according to the beam size. The deflection of the beam is described by a fourth-order nonlinear boundary value problem, or equivalently in terms of a nonlinear integral equation. New a priori analytical estimates on the solution from both sides are first derived and then lower and upper bounds for the pull-in parameters are obtained, with no need of solving the nonlinear boundary value problem. The lower and upper bounds turn out to be very close each other and in excellent agreement with the numerical results provided by the shooting method. The approach also provides accurate predictions for the pull-in parameters of a freestanding nanoactuator.  相似文献

In this paper, carbon nanotube-based nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) are nanofabricated and tested. In-situ scanning electron microscopy measurements of the deflection of the cantilever under electrostatic actuation are reported. In particular, a cantilever nanotube suspended over an electrode (nanoswitch), or two symmetric cantilever nanotubes (nanotweezers), from which a differential in electrical potential is imposed, are studied. The finite deformation regime investigated here is the first of its kind. An analytical model based on the energy method in both small deformation and finite kinematics (large deformation) regimes is used to interpret the measurements. The theory overcomes limitations of prior analysis reported in the literature towards the prediction of the structural behavior of NEMS. Some of the simplifying hypotheses have been removed. Furthermore, the theory takes into account the cylindrical shape of the deflected nanotube in the evaluation of its electrical capacitance, the influence of the van der Waals forces as well as finite kinematics. In addition, tip charge concentration and a quantum correction of the electrical capacitance are also considered. The energy-based method is used to predict the structural behavior and instability of the nanotube, corresponding to the on/off states of the nanoswitch, or to the open/close states of the nanotweezers—at the so-called pull-in voltage. Accuracy of the derived formulas is assessed by comparison of the theoretical prediction and experimental data in both small deformation and finite kinematics regimes. The results reported in this work are particularly useful in the characterization of the electromechanical properties of nanotubes as well as in the optimal design of nanotube-based NEMS devices.  相似文献
