Considering a prototypic model of a bimodal oscillator we investigate the synchronization of the internal time scales for a system with interacting fast and slow oscillatory modes. Particular emphasis is given to the transition between mode-locked and mode-unlocked chaos. It is shown that this transition involves a homoclinic bifurcation in which the synchronized chaotic attractor loses its band structure. For two coupled bimodal oscillators we illustrate the presence of separate synchronization regions for the fast and the slow modes. The dependence of these regions on the mismatch and coupling parameters is studied.  相似文献

The subject of this study is the long-time equilibration dynamics of a strongly disordered one-dimensional chain of coupled weakly anharmonic classical oscillators. It is shown that chaos in this system has a very particular spatial structure: it can be viewed as a dilute gas of chaotic spots. Each chaotic spot corresponds to a stochastic pump which drives the Arnold diffusion of the oscillators surrounding it, thus leading to their relaxation and thermalization. The most important mechanism of equilibration at long distances is provided by random migration of the chaotic spots along the chain, which bears analogy with variable-range hopping of electrons in strongly disordered solids. The corresponding macroscopic transport equations are obtained.  相似文献

Resonant perturbations are effective for harnessing nonlinear oscillators for various applications such as controlling chaos and inducing chaos. Of physical interest is the effect of small frequency mismatch on the attractors of the underlying dynamical systems. By utilizing a prototype of nonlinear oscillators, the periodically forced Duffing oscillator and its variant, we find a phenomenon: resonant-frequency mismatch can result in attractors that are nonchaotic but are apparently strange in the sense that they possess a negative Lyapunov exponent but its information dimension measured using finite numerics assumes a fractional value. We call such attractors pseudo-strange. The transition to pesudo-strange attractors as a system parameter changes can be understood analytically by regarding the system as nonstationary and using the Melnikov function. Our results imply that pseudo-strange attractors are common in nonstationary dynamical systems.  相似文献

We construct a new RC phase shift network based Chua's circuit, which exhibits a period-doubling bifurcation route to chaos. Using coupled versions of such a phase-shift network based Chua's oscillators, we describe a new method for achieving complete synchronization (CS), approximate lag synchronization (LS), and approximate anticipating synchronization (AS) without delay or parameter mismatch. Employing the Pecora and Carroll approach, chaos synchronization is achieved in coupled chaotic oscillators, where the drive system variables control the response system. As a result, AS or LS or CS is demonstrated without using a variable delay line both experimentally and numerically.  相似文献

We show that dynamics between order and chaos, namely strange nonchaotic dynamics can be efficiently studied by means of recurrence properties. Different transitions to this dynamics in coupled R?ssler oscillators are revealed by some measures of complexity based on the recurrence time, which is the time needed for a system to recur to a former visited neighborhood. Furthermore, regions of the parameter space where the system is in non-phase, imperfect-phase or phase synchronization are depicted by means of recurrence based indices such as the generalized autocorrelation function and the correlation of probability of recurrence.  相似文献

We study pairs of identical coupled chaotic oscillators. In particular, we have used Roessler (in the funnel and no funnel regimes), Lorenz, and four-dimensional chaotic Lotka-Volterra models. In all four of these cases, a pair of identical oscillators is asymmetrically coupled. The main result of the numerical simulations is that in all cases, specific values of coupling strength and asymmetry exist that render the two oscillators periodic and synchronized. The values of the coupling strength for which this phenomenon occurs is well below the previously known value for complete synchronization. We have found that this behavior exists for all the chaotic oscillators that we have used in the analysis. We postulate that this behavior is presumably generic to all chaotic oscillators. In order to complete the study, we have tested the robustness of this phenomenon of chaos suppression versus the addition of some Gaussian noise. We found that chaos suppression is robust for the addition of finite noise level. Finally, we propose some extension to this research.  相似文献

We investigate the Hopf bifurcation of the synchronous chaos in coupled Lorenz oscillators. We find that the system undergoes a phase transition along the Hopf instability of the synchronous chaos. The phase transition makes the traveling wave component with the phase difference φ(i)-φ(i+1)=2π/N between adjacent sites unstable. The phase transition also plays a role to relate the Hopf bifurcation with the co-dimension two bifurcation of the synchronous chaos.  相似文献

Statistically distinguishing between phase-coherent and noncoherent chaotic dynamics from time series is a contemporary problem in nonlinear sciences. In this work, we propose different measures based on recurrence properties of recorded trajectories, which characterize the underlying systems from both geometric and dynamic viewpoints. The potentials of the individual measures for discriminating phase-coherent and noncoherent chaotic oscillations are discussed. A detailed numerical analysis is performed for the chaotic Ro?ssler system, which displays both types of chaos as one control parameter is varied, and the Mackey-Glass system as an example of a time-delay system with noncoherent chaos. Our results demonstrate that especially geometric measures from recurrence network analysis are well suited for tracing transitions between spiral- and screw-type chaos, a common route from phase-coherent to noncoherent chaos also found in other nonlinear oscillators. A detailed explanation of the observed behavior in terms of attractor geometry is given.  相似文献

We show that a hyperbolic chaos can be observed in resonantly coupled oscillators near a Hopf bifurcation, described by normal-form-type equations for complex amplitudes. The simplest example consists of four oscillators, comprising two alternatively activated, due to an external periodic modulation, pairs. In terms of the stroboscopic Poincaré map, the phase differences change according to an expanding Bernoulli map that depends on the coupling type. Several examples of hyperbolic chaos for different types of coupling are illustrated numerically.  相似文献

We describe experimental studies of the dynamical behavior of a recently proposed electro-optic discrete time nonlinear delay oscillator. With appropriate choice of the oscillator loop parameters and external forcing of the dynamics using a pulsed laser source, the system allows for the physical realization of a high dimensional mathematical nonlinear mapping. The dynamical features observed with this new class of discrete time delay oscillator differ significantly from those observed with similar continuous time nonlinear delay feedback oscillators and reveal the intrinsic discrete time nature of the dynamics. We also discuss specific applications to chaos communications using regularly clocked binary data.  相似文献

The collective phase response to a macroscopic external perturbation of a population of interacting nonlinear elements exhibiting collective oscillations is formulated for the case of globally coupled oscillators. The macroscopic phase sensitivity is derived from the microscopic phase sensitivity of the constituent oscillators by a two-step phase reduction. We apply this result to quantify the stability of the macroscopic common-noise-induced synchronization of two uncoupled populations of oscillators undergoing coherent collective oscillations.  相似文献

We propose a scheme to induce chaos in nonlinear oscillators that either are by themselves incapable of exhibiting chaos or are far away from parameter regions of chaotic behaviors. Our idea is to make use of small, judiciously chosen perturbations in the form of weak periodic signals with time-varying frequency and phase, and to drive the system into a hierarchy of nonlinear resonant states and eventually into chaos. We demonstrate this method by using numerical examples and a laboratory experiment with a Duffing type of electronic circuit driven by a phase-locked loop. The phase-locked loop can track the instantaneous frequency and phase of the Duffing circuit and deliver resonant perturbations to generate robust chaos.  相似文献

We study the long-term average frequency as a function of the natural frequency for Kuramoto oscillators with periodic coefficients. Unlike the case for more general periodically forced oscillators, this function is never a "devil's staircase"; it may have plateaus at integer multiples of the forcing frequency, but we prove it is strictly increasing between these plateaus. The proof uses the fact that the flow maps for Kuramoto oscillators extend to M?bius transformations on the complex plane, and that M?bius transformations have particularly simple dynamics that rule out p∶q mode locking except in the case of fixed points (q=1). We also give a criterion for the degeneration of an integer plateau to a single point and use it to explain the absence of plateaus at even multiples of the collective frequency for a Kuramoto system with a bimodal frequency distribution.  相似文献

Many mechanical systems consist of continuum mechanical structures, having either linear or nonlinear elasticity or geometry, coupled to nonlinear oscillators. In this paper, we consider the class of linear continua coupled to mechanical pendula. In such mechanical systems, there often exist several natural time scales determined by the physics of the problem. Using a time scale splitting, we analyze a prototypical structural-mechanical system consisting of a planar nonlinear pendulum coupled to a flexible rod made of linear viscoelastic material. In this system both low-dimensional and high-dimensional chaos is observed. The low-dimensional chaos appears in the limit of small coupling between the continua and oscillator, where the natural frequency of the primary mode of the rod is much greater than the natural frequency of the pendulum. In this case, the motion resides on a slow manifold. As the coupling is increased, global motion moves off of the slow manifold and high-dimensional chaos is observed. We present a numerical bifurcation analysis of the resulting system illustrating the mechanism for the onset of high-dimensional chaos. Constrained invariant sets are computed to reveal a process from low-dimensional to high-dimensional transitions. Applications will be to both deterministic and stochastic bifurcations. Practical implications of the bifurcation from low-dimensional to high-dimensional chaos for detection of damage as well as global effects of noise will also be discussed.  相似文献

The polynomial chaos decomposition of stochastic variables and processes is implemented in conjunction with optimal polynomial control of nonlinear dynamical systems. The procedure is demonstrated on a base-excited system whereby ground motion is modeled as a stochastic process with a specified correlation function and is approximated by its Karhunen-Loeve expansion. An adaptive scheme for stochastic approximation with polynomial chaos bases is proposed which is based on a displacement-velocity norm and is applied to the identification of phase orbits of nonlinear oscillators. This approximation is then integrated in the design of an optimal polynomial controller, allowing for the efficient estimation of statistics and probability density functions of quantities of interest. Numerical investigations are carried out employing the polynomial chaos expansions and the Lyapunov asymptotic stability condition based control policy. The results reveal that the performance, as gaged by probabilistic quantities of interest, of the controlled oscillators is greatly improved. A comparative study is also presented against the classical stochastic optimal control, whereby statistical linearization based LQG is employed to design the optimal controller. It is remarked that the proposed polynomial chaos expansion is a preferred approach to the optimal control of nonlinear random oscillators.  相似文献

Synchronization of spatiotemporal distributed system is investigated by considering the model of 1D dif-fusively coupled complex Ginzburg-Landau oscillators. An itinerant approach is suggested to randomly move turbulentsignal injections in the space of spatiotemporal chaos. Our numerical simulations show that perfect turbulence synchro-nization can be achieved with properly selected itinerant time and coupling intensity.  相似文献

It is shown that regimes with dynamical chaos are inherent not only to nonlinear system but they can be generated by initially linear systems and the requirements for chaotic dynamics and characteristics need further elaboration. Three simplest physical models are considered as examples. In the first, dynamic chaos in the interaction of three linear oscillators is investigated. Analogous process is shown in the second model of electromagnetic wave scattering in a double periodical inhomogeneous medium occupying half-space. The third model is a linear parametric problem for the electromagnetic field in homogeneous dielectric medium which permittivity is modulated in time.  相似文献

We show that there is a link between the Kuramoto paradigm and another system of synchronized oscillators, namely an electrical power distribution grid of generators and consumers. The purpose of this work is to show both the formal analogy and some practical consequences. The mapping can be made quantitative, and under some necessary approximations a class of Kuramoto-like models, those with bimodal distribution of the frequencies, is most appropriate for the power-grid. In fact in the power-grid there are two kinds of oscillators: the “sources" delivering power to the “consumers".  相似文献

An approach for the secure transmission of encrypted messages using chaos and noise is presented in this paper. The method is based on the synchronization of certain types of chaotic oscillators in response to a common noise input. This allows two distant oscillators to generate identical output which can be used as a key for encryption and decryption of a message signal. The noiselike synchronizing input-which contains no message information-is communicated to identical oscillators in the transmitter and the receiver over a public channel. The encrypted message is also sent over a public channel, while the key is never transmitted at all. The chaotic nature of the oscillators which generate the key and the randomness of the signal driving the process combine to make the recovery of the key by an eavesdropper extremely difficult. We evaluate system performance with respect to security and robustness and show that a robust and secure system can be obtained. (c) 1998 American Institute of Physics.  相似文献
