We present an analytical proof of the existence of unidirectional optical Bloch oscillations in a waveguide array system. It is shown that the presence of nonreciprocity in the system allows for a complete normal-mode dephasing in one of the propagation directions, resulting in a unidirectional breakdown in Bloch oscillations. A model system consisting of an array of transversely magnetized asymmetric Si/SiO2 waveguides with a magneto-optic cover layer is presented. Large index contrasts between film and cover are critical for practical realizations.  相似文献

We demonstrate the existence of Bloch oscillations of acoustic fields in sound propagation through a superlattice of water cavities and layers of methyl methacrylate. To obtain the acoustic equivalent of a Wannier-Stark ladder, we employ a set of cavities with different thicknesses. Bloch oscillations are observed as time-resolved oscillations of transmission in a direct analogy to electronic Bloch oscillations in biased semiconductor superlattices. Moreover, for a particular gradient of cavity thicknesses, an overlap of two acoustic minibands occurs, which results in resonant Zener-like transmission enhancement.  相似文献

We present a new scheme for realizing Bloch oscillations and Wannier-Stark ladder based on a lattice of coupled LC circuits. By converting the second order dynamical ODEs of the system into a first order Schrödinger-like equation, we propose an equivalent tight binding Hamiltonian to describe the circuit. We show that a synthesized electric field is produced by introducing a frequency mismatch into the resonant frequency of the adjacent LC resonators. The Wannier-Stark modes are the normal modes of the circuit and the Bloch oscillations can be observed in a coupled LC lattice. By addition of coupling capacitors between nodes of the circuit, we study the Bloch oscillation in the presence of long-range couplings. We also show that the circuit converts to a transmission line simulating synthetic electric fields in the continuum limit. The coupled LC circuit is, in some sense, amongst the simplest physical systems exhibiting Bloch oscillation and Wannier-Stark Ladder.  相似文献

Theoretical formalism for DC‐field polaron dynamics is extended to the dynamics of a 1D Holstein polaron in an external AC electric field using multiple Davydov trial states. Effects of carrier–phonon coupling on detuned and resonant scenarios are investigated for both phase and nonzero phase. For slightly off‐resonant or detuned cases, a beat between the usual Bloch oscillations and an AC driving force results in super Bloch oscillations, that is, rescaled Bloch oscillations in both the spatial and the temporal dimension. Super Bloch oscillations are damped by carrier–phonon coupling. For resonant cases, if the carrier is created on two nearest‐neighboring sites, the carrier wave packet spreads with small‐amplitude oscillations. Adding carrier–phonon coupling localizes the carrier wave packet. If an initial broad Gaussian wave packet is adopted, the centroid of the carrier wave packet moves with a certain velocity and with its shape unchanged. Adding carrier–phonon coupling broadens the carrier wave packet and slows down the carrier movement. Our findings may help provide guiding principles on how to manipulate the dynamics of the super Bloch oscillations of carriers in semiconductor superlattice and optical lattices by modifying DC and AC field strengths, AC phases, and detuning parameters.  相似文献

Bloch oscillations of wave packets in semiconductor superlattices are observed by THz-emission spectroscopy after pulsed photo-excitation well above the fundamental band-gap. We show that Bloch oscillations are induced by excitation of states in both the first and the second electron miniband.  相似文献

All previous investigations on the Bloch oscillations of waves focus on scalar waves. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, the existence of Bloch oscillations of vector fields for circularly polarized light (CPL) propagating through a designed liquid crystal structure. To obtain the Wannier-Stark ladder of the CPL, we have designed a cholesteric liquid crystal structure with spatially varying pitch. The Bloch oscillations of the CPL have been observed in such a structure by exact numerical simulations. We have also shown that such a phenomenon can be easily detected in time-resolved reflection experiments.  相似文献

A charge motion in an electric field in a Holstein molecular chain is modeled in the absence of dissipation. It is shown that in a weak electric field a Holstein polaron moves uniformly experiencing small oscillations of its shape. These oscillations are associated with the chain’s discreteness and caused by the presence of Peierls-Nabarro potential there. The critical value of the electric field intensity at which the moving polaron starts oscillating at Bloch frequency is found. It is shown that the polaron can demonstrate Bloch oscillations retaining its shape. It is also shown that a breathing mode of Bloch oscillations can arise. In all cases the polaron motion along the chain is infinite.  相似文献

The oscillatory motion of electrons in a periodic potential under a constant applied electric field, known as Bloch oscillations (BO), is one of the most striking and intriguing quantum effects and was predicted more than eighty years ago. Oscillating electrons emit electromagnetic radiation and here we consider this BO effect for emission in the THz region. To date, it has been assumed that the Bloch oscillation of an electron is anharmonic oscillation, therefore with radiation emitted at the single Bloch frequency. We analyze scenarios when Bloch oscillations can be accompanied by the emission of radiation not only at the Bloch frequency but also with double and triple Bloch frequencies. The first scenario means that electrons could jump over neighboring Stark states. The second scenario of anharmonic emission is coupled to an opening of the minigap in the miniband.  相似文献

It is shown that, at zero temperature, a hole placed in a homogeneous synthetic nucleotide chain with applied electric field demonstrates Bloch oscillations. The oscillations of the hole placed initially on one of the base pairs arise in response to disruption of the initial charge distribution caused by nucleotide vibrations. The finite temperature fluctuations result in degradation of coherent oscillations. The maximum permissible temperature for DNA “Bloch oscillator” occurrence is estimated.  相似文献

While many predicted superlattice behaviors depend on the presence of Bloch oscillations, the existence of such oscillations remains problematical. Here, we consider procedures by which their existence within a superlattice could be detected. We first set upper and lower bounds on the necessary fields. We then demonstrate that while a negative differential mobility is expected, no resonant peak occurs in this mobility at the Bloch frequency. However, we provide two ways of directly observing Bloch oscillations. In the first, we note the existence of structures in the dc velocity-field characteristic when an externally applied RF field has a frequency which is harmonically related to the Bloch frequency. The second approach is to measure the velocity fluctuation noise spectra, which should have a peak at the field-tunable Bloch frequency.  相似文献

We experimentally investigate photonic Zener tunneling between the bands of a waveguide array by directly monitoring the propagating light inside this structure. For strong transverse index gradients we observe Zener breakdown as regular outbursts of radiation escaping from the Bloch oscillations. Tunneling to higher order photonic bands and Bloch oscillations in different bands have been detected.  相似文献

Anomalous Bloch oscillations in arrays of coupled waveguides have been investigated using two different approaches: multiple scattering formalism and coupled-mode model. Both approaches are shown to yield identical results. Formulas for the parameters of the coupled-mode model are derived. An analytical expression for the optical beam path is obtained, and the condition for the existence of anomalous Bloch oscillations is found.  相似文献

The conversion of the carrier frequency of electromagnetic pulses in lateral semiconductor superlattices, associated with the excitation of Bloch oscillations in the superlattice, is studied theoretically. Conditions are found that are necessary for the observation of the radiation of a Bloch oscillator. The energy characteristics of the efficiency of frequency multiplication and the spectral distribution of the radiation transmitted through the superlattice are calculated. It is shown that low-frequency collisions of electrons do not suppress the excitation of Bloch oscillations, which can be observed under the interaction of the superlattice not only with a pulsed, but also with a continuous-wave signal.  相似文献

We present a finite difference method to solve a new type of nonlocal hydrodynamic equations that arise in the theory of spatially inhomogeneous Bloch oscillations in semiconductor superlattices. The hydrodynamic equations describe the evolution of the electron density, electric field and the complex amplitude of the Bloch oscillations for the electron current density and the mean energy density. These equations contain averages over the Bloch phase which are integrals of the unknown electric field and are derived by singular perturbation methods. Among the solutions of the hydrodynamic equations, at a 70 K lattice temperature, there are spatially inhomogeneous Bloch oscillations coexisting with moving electric field domains and Gunn-type oscillations of the current. At higher temperature (300 K) only Bloch oscillations remain. These novel solutions are found for restitution coefficients in a narrow interval below their critical values and disappear for larger values. We use an efficient numerical method based on an implicit second-order finite difference scheme for both the electric field equation (of drift-diffusion type) and the parabolic equation for the complex amplitude. Double integrals appearing in the nonlocal hydrodynamic equations are calculated by means of expansions in modified Bessel functions. We use numerical simulations to ascertain the convergence of the method. If the complex amplitude equation is solved using a first order scheme for restitution coefficients near their critical values, a spurious convection arises that annihilates the complex amplitude in the part of the superlattice that is closer to the cathode. This numerical artifact disappears if the space step is appropriately reduced or we use the second-order numerical scheme.  相似文献

We show that Bloch oscillations are possible in dissipative optical waveguide lattices with a linearly varying propagation constant. These oscillations occur in spite of the fact that the Bloch wave packet experiences coupling gain and (or) loss. Experimentally, this process can be observed in different settings, such as in laser arrays and lattices of semiconductor optical amplifiers. In addition, we demonstrate that these systems can suppress instabilities arising from preferential mode noise growth.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the implementation of Bloch oscillations in an atomic interferometer to increase the separation of the two interfering paths. A numerical model, in very good agreement with the experiment, is developed. The contrast of the interferometer and its sensitivity to phase fluctuations and to intensity fluctuations are also calculated. We demonstrate that the sensitivity to phase fluctuations can be significantly reduced by using a suitable arrangement of Bloch oscillations pulses.  相似文献

We show that Rabi oscillations between Bloch modes of an optical waveguide array with subwavelength periodicity diverge, both in frequency and in field amplitude, when the optical wavelength approaches a mathematical exceptional point at which the Bloch mode becomes self-orthogonal.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of Bose–Einstein condensate in one-dimensional driven tilted periodic optical lattices by using variational approximation and numerical simulation. Rich phenomena are revealed, including diffusion, self-trapping, breather and soliton, which strongly depend on the atomic interaction, the amplitude of the modulation, the constant force and the phase difference between the Bloch oscillations and the drive. The critical conditions for the dynamical transition from diffusion to self-trapping and for the formation of the soliton are derived analytically. In addition, the phase diagrams of dynamical transitions are presented in full parameters space. We find that the dynamics of the system can be completely controlled by adjusting the constant force, the amplitude of the modulation and the phase difference between the Bloch oscillations and the drive. The results are confirmed by the direct numerical simulation of the full Gross–Pitaevskii equation.  相似文献
