We describe polarizing films formed from the lyotropic liquid crystalline phases of dyes dissolved in water. The dye polarizers possess a high dichroic ratio close to that of conventional polarizers. In addition, the dried dye films provide a uniform homogeneous orientation for thermotropic nematic materials. Therefore, thin dye films can simultaneously serve as internal polarizers and as alignment agents. These properties make them especially suitable for twisted nematic devices based on low cost birefringent plastic substrates.  相似文献

New low molar mass liquid crystalline vitrifying materials have been synthesized and tested for application in optical films. The molecules were based on spiro compounds derived from pentaerythritol and mesogenic groups derived from cyanobiphenylyl moieties. The resulting materials showed glass transition temperatures as high as 85 degrees C and nematic to isotropic phase transition temperatures up to 222 degrees C. Crystallization from the melt was strongly suppressed. Well-aligned, solid, birefringent layers were obtained from the materials by spincoating. Uniaxially oriented layers with an optic axis tilted with respect to the substrate were obtained by spincoating the liquid crystals on pretilt amplification layers. When an anisotropic dye was incorporated in the liquid crystals, polarizers with a tilted absorption axis were obtained. In addition, the compounds were found to be suitable as hosts for photo-induced reorientation of photo-isomerizable dyes.  相似文献

Some optical properties of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films are investigated prior and after the rubbing and stretching of the samples. Birefringence of the prepared foils is enhanced as their stretching degree and rubbing become larger. These processing factors are also affecting the values of the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices. The induced anisotropy in PVA foils is evidenced in the morphological characteristics observed by optical microscopy. The spreading and adhesion behaviors of a nematic liquid crystal on PVA foils are analyzed by means of contact angle measurements. Preliminary testing of the nematic on the PVA films revealed significant variations in transmitted light intensity during sample rotation under crossed polarizers. The high contrast between dark and bright patterns is indicative of uniform and homogenous alignment of nematic on the rubbed and stretched PVA foils.  相似文献

Colloidal chiral nematic suspensions of cellulose were prepared from dissolving grade wood pulp. On evaporation of the water, the suspension dries down to give iridescent cellulose films. The optical properties of the films may be characterized by incorporating dyes in the films, and following the ordering of the dye molecules by measurement of induced circular dichroism (ICD). Structural changes to the films, such as decreasing the chiral nematic pitch by increasing the salt content and increasing the chiral nematic order through magnetic alignment, can be monitored by measuring the changes in ICD.  相似文献

In this work we present a new technique for obtaining large diffraction gratings (some cm) by means of a simple filling of cells having a planar treatment of their inner surfaces. A homogeneous mixture, composed of a cholesteric liquid crystal and a nematic liquid crystal monomer, was used. During the filling process, the flow induces a phase separation between the cholesteric liquid crystal and the liquid crystal monomer and, at the same time, the latter is oriented planar to the surfaces of the cell. Phase separation produces alternate arrays constituted by the cholesteric liquid crystal and the nematic liquid crystal monomer. Successive UV polymerization of these films yields a permanent grating. We have investigated the transmitted and first order diffracted beam efficiency for films obtained at different temperatures. The morphology of the films was studied by using an optical microscope equipped with crossed polarizers and by electron microscopy in order to control the shape of the arrays and the alignment of the oriented polymer.  相似文献

We use a layer-by layer electrostatic self-assembly technique to obtain in-plane oriented aggregates of mesogenic dye molecules cast from lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) on mica substrates. The aqueous solutions of dye used for deposition are in the nematic phase. Atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the dried film reveal that the LCLC molecules adsorb at the charged substrate preserving ordered aggregates of elongated shape characteristic of the nematic phase in the aqueous solution. These elongated aggregates of LCLC molecules form films with in-plane orientational order and are compositionally distinct from the substrate.  相似文献

The entropically driven coassembly of nanorods (cellulose nanocrystals, CNCs) and nanospheres (dye‐labeled spherical latex nanoparticles, NPs) was studied in aqueous suspensions and in solid films. In mixed CNC‐latex suspensions, phase separation into an isotropic latex‐NP‐rich and a chiral nematic CNC‐rich phase took place; the latter contained a significant amount of latex NPs. Drying the mixed suspension resulted in CNC‐latex films with planar disordered layers of latex NPs, which alternated with chiral nematic CNC‐rich regions. In addition, fluorescent latex NPs were embedded in the chiral nematic domains. The stratified morphology of the films, together with a random distribution of latex NPs in the anisotropic phase, led to the films having close‐to‐uniform fluorescence, birefringence, and circular dichroism properties.  相似文献

A numerical solution of the Leslie-Ericksen equations for nematic liquid crystals is obtained for in-plane rotation of a strong magnetic field. A transient periodic orientation develops as a result of in-plane director motion and the induced shear flow. At long times the in-plane director orientation results in steady splay-bend inversion walls. A linear stability analysis shows that the inversion walls are unstable to perturbations out of the plane for elastic coefficients characteristic of nematic polymers. Calculations of transmitted light intensity through crossed polarizers for the computed orientation development predict the evolution of a banded texture, as observed experimentally.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that optical transducers can take advantage from the outstanding optical properties of nematic liquid crystals. The measurements point out that the birefringence and the phase transition of a liquid crystal can be exploited for the threshold sensing. For that purpose a device consisting of an orientated liquid crystalline film between two crossed polarizers was used. The nematic liquid crystal was also used as a sensitive coating material on an integrated optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The calibration experiments were carried out with volatile organic solvents and different calibration curves were measured for meta-xylene and para-xylene.  相似文献

This paper describes the alignment of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) structures formed between aligned polymer fibres, where the FLC smectic layers are determined by polarising microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The FLC/polymer composite films were formed from a nematic phase FLC/monomer solution using a photopolymerisation-induced phase separation method. It was found that bending of the FLC smectic layers was induced in both the film plane and the cross-sectional plane at the phase transition from smectic A to chiral smectic C of the FLC material. The light transmittance properties of the composite film between crossed polarizers was analysed by light propagation simulation in several optical anisotropic media, based on the evaluated smectic layer model.  相似文献

The inherent chromonic lyotropic liquid crystalline properties of a dye have been manipulated to fabricate multi-axial micropolarizing thin films by means of the photoalignment technique. The dye aqueous solution is deposited on a photopatterned polymer film to result in the macroscopic alignment of the dye molecules, followed by drying at ambient temperature. The solid polarizing dye layers thus produced exhibit very a high contrast ratio and degree of polarization in the region of visible light. Addition of a small amount of surfactant to the dye solution is a prerequisite for the generation of a nematic chromonic phase and for the formation of homogeneous thin dye layers on the polymer film. The correlation between the optical and surface morphological properties of the dye layers is discussed.  相似文献

This work reports the effect of dye on the photopolymerisation and electro-optical properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) composite films. Dichroic PDLC (DPDLC) films based on a photocurable polymer and nematic liquid crystal (LC) with an azo dichroic dye were prepared by photopolymerisation-induced phase separation method. Polarising optical microscopy has been used for monitoring the phase separation kinetics and two-phase morphology evolution in the DPDLC system. LC domains with radial structures during initial period of phase separation adopted a resultant morphology of bipolar configuration over the course of polymerisation. The phase separation and morphology of LC domains was found to be dependent on the amount of dye used. Moreover, the addition of small amount of dye reduced the switching voltage, and enhanced the contrast ratio with improved switching time in the PDLC films. It was shown that, under the application of an electric field, the molecular orientation and absorbance of dichroic dye can be controlled in DPDLC to induce non-linearity and colour contrast without the use of polarisers.  相似文献

A series of TiO2 nanorod arrays were obtained by hydrothermal reaction, then the morphologies were characterized and analysed. In the light polymerization condition, different morphologies of TiO2 nanorod arrays and chiral nematic liquid crystalline (N*-LCs) media were combined to prepare broad-band reflectors. By adjusting the length and interval size of the TiO2 nanorod arrays, the reflection spectra and the positions of the reflected spectrum and the reflected bandwidth can be controlled accordingly. As a result, the effect of polymerization temperatures and morphologies of TiO2 nanorod arrays on the broad-band reflection in the N*-LC composite system has been investigated. Potential applications of the composite were related to brightness enhancement films, bandwidth-controllable reflective polarizers and near-infrared light blocking films.  相似文献

Polymerisation-induced phase separation method was used to prepare dye-doped polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (DPDLC) films consisting of nematic liquid crystal, photo-curable pre-polymer and a dichroic dye. The change occurring on droplets morphology with the change in dye concentration and voltage was investigated by means of polarising optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Electro-optic behaviour of these composite films in the presence of an externally applied AC electric field (0–100 V, 200 Hz) and temperature range 25–50°C was evaluated using He–Ne laser. The maximum absorbance of dye and effect of electric field on the absorbance of dye was studied using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy was carried out in the frequency range 20 Hz–20 MHz and over the temperature range 25°C–90°C. Dielectric parameters such as distribution parameter, relaxation frequency, relaxation strength and relaxation time of these DPDLC films were calculated, and the modelling of experimental data was done using Debye and Cole–Cole method.  相似文献

A new type of polymer–liquid crystal composite with photovariable dichroism and birefringence is described. Porous stretched polyethylene films were used as polymer matrices. To induce a cholesteric phase in a commercial nematic host, a chiral photochromic dopant based on sorbide and cinnamic acid capable of E–Z isomerization under UV irradiation was used. A merocianine‐type substance was selected as a dichroic dye. Introduction of a dye‐doped cholesteric mixture with a helical pitch higher than ~300 nm to polymer film led to an almost complete transition from a cholesteric to an oriented nematic phase, as well as to an increase in birefringence and the appearance of dichroism. Decrease of the helical pitch by increasing in the chiral dopant concentration in the liquid crystal–polymer composite results in a reduction of the dichroism values. UV irradiation of polymer composite leading to an isomerization of the chiral dopant and helix untwisting induces a noticeable gradual growth of dichroism and birefringence. These new composites can be considered as promising materials for optical applications.  相似文献
