Cluster molecular field approximations represent a substantial progress over the simple Weiss theory where only one spin is
considered in the molecular field resulting from all the other spins. In this work we discuss a systematic way of improving
the molecular field approximation by inserting spin clusters of variable sizes into a homogeneously magnetised background.
The density of states of these spin clusters is then computed exactly. We show that the true non-classical critical exponents
can be extracted from spin clusters treated in such a manner. For this purpose a molecular field finite size scaling theory
is discussed and effective critical exponents are analysed. Reliable values of critical quantities of various Ising and Potts
models are extracted from very small system sizes.

We analyze the higher-twist effects and the SU(3)-flavor symmetry breaking in the correlation functions used to calculate form factors of pseudoscalar mesons in the QCD
light-cone sum rule approach. It is shown that the Ward identities for these correlation functions yield relations between
twist-4 two- and three-particle distribution amplitudes. In addition to the relations already obtained from the QCD equations
of motions, we have found a new one. With the help of these relations, the twist-4 contribution to the light-cone sum rule
for the pion electromagnetic form factor is reduced to a very simple form. Simultaneously, we correct a sign error in an earlier
calculation. The updated light-cone sum rule prediction for the pion form factor at intermediate momentum transfers is compared
with the recent Jefferson Lab data. Furthermore, from the correlation functions with strange-quark currents the kaon electromagnetic
form factor and the weak transition form factors are predicted with accuracy.

Progress is reviewed of available data for evaluation of atomic masses since the 1995 one. Many more direct mass measurements
have become available, especially in the region of proton-rich nuclides. The number of alpha- and, especially, proton-decay
data increased considerably. In the region of superhigh mass numbers, many very interesting new observations were made.

We report an experimental study of the second harmonic generated in type I interaction by a Ti:Sa laser operating in the picosecond
regime at 786 nm in LBO crystals. A joint characterization of the dependence of conversion efficiency and spatial beam quality
on crystal length and degree of pump focusing is given. A simple heuristic formula, reproducing over a broad range of parameters
the predictions of classical Boyd–Kleinman theory, is derived and compared with the experimental results. The conditions for
the optimization of the generation process using an elliptically focused pump beam are quantitatively evaluated.

It is known that the rescaled position of a tagged particle in symmetric simple exclusion processes converges to a diffusion.
If now the tracer particle is driven by a small force, then it picks up a velocity. The Einstein relation states that in the
limit, this velocity is proportional to the small force, and the constant of proportionality can be computed from the diffusion
matrix of the tracer particle with no driving force. Such a relation is believed to be generally valid. In this article we
establish its validity for all symmetric simple exclusion processes in dimension and we prove a density property for certain invariant states of the driven system.

Composite thin films of PbTiO3 nanocrystals and high-transparency PEKc polymer for applications in electro-optical devices were prepared using the spin
coating technique. The size of the PbTiO3 nanocrystals was estimated to be 30–40 nm using a transmission electron microscope. The transmission technique, a simple
method for measuring the electro-optic coefficients of poled composite polymer films was developed. The electro-optic coefficient
γ33 of poled PbTiO3/PEKc composite polymer films was measured to be 18.34 pm V-1 at 633 nm under room temperature. The index at 633 nm and the dielectric constant at 100 kHz under room temperature were
determined to be 1.65248 and 7.32, respectively. The figure of merit F2=n7γ2/ε was estimated to be 1546, showing very good electro-optical properties.

High-yield synthesis of amorphous silicon oxide nanoropes (SiONRs) was achieved by using simple evaporation and oxidation
of Si. Transmission electron microscopy observations show that the amorphous SiONRs have a length of up to several hundreds
of micrometers and a diameter of 20 to 40 nm. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis reveals that the SiONRs consist of Si and O
elements in an atomic ratio of approximately 1:1.2. The formation process of the SiONRs is closely related to a vapor–solid
method. The SiONRs emit blue light at energies of 2.53 and 3.0 eV.

We study an analytically tractable model with long-range interactions for which an out-of-equilibrium very long-lived coherent structure spontaneously appears. The dynamics of this model is indeed
very peculiar: a bicluster forms at low energy and is stable for very long time, contrary to statistical mechanics predictions. We first explain the
onset of the structure, by approximating the short time dynamics with a forced Burgers equation. The emergence of the bicluster
is the signature of the shock waves present in the associated hydrodynamical equations. The striking quantitative agreement
with the dynamics of the particles fully confirms this procedure. We then show that a very fast timescale can be singled out
from a slower motion. This enables us to use an adiabatic approximation to derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes
very well the long time dynamics. We then get an explanation of the very long time stability of the bicluster: this out-of-equilibrium
state corresponds to a statistical equilibrium of an effective mean-field dynamics.

We consider a 3D dilute Bose-Einstein condensate at thermal equilibrium in a rotating harmonic trap. The condensate wavefunction
is a local minimum of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional and we determine it numerically with the very efficient conjugate
gradient method. For single vortex configurations in a cigar-shaped harmonic trap we find that the vortex line is bent, in
agreement with the numerical prediction of Garcia-Ripoll and Perez-Garcia [Phys. Rev. A 63, 041603 (2001)]. We derive a simple energy functional for the vortex line in a cigar-shaped condensate which allows to understand
physically why the vortex line bends and to predict analytically the minimal rotation frequency required to stabilize the
bent vortex line. This analytical prediction is in excellent agreement with the numerical results. It also allows to find
in a simple way a saddle point of the energy, where the vortex line is in a stationary configuration in the rotating frame
but not a local minimum of energy. Finally we investigate numerically the effect of thermal fluctuations on the vortex line
for a condensate with a straight vortex: we can predict what happens in a single realization of the experiment by a Monte
Carlo sampling of an atomic field quasi-distribution function of the density operator of the gas at thermal equilibrium in
the Bogoliubov approximation.

Using a simple wet-chemical route, we synthesized CuO nanorods with diameters of ca. 5–15 nm and lengths of up to 400 nm.

by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron
spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.

A laser-induced electric microfield in potassium vapor partially ionized by laser radiation and placed in an external magnetic
field has been studied experimentally. It was found that the dependence of the electric field rise time on the magnetic field
strength had a peak value when the plasma frequency is equal to the Larmor frequency. This finding allows us to measure the
photoelectron density in weakly ionized potassium vapor. The results are explained in terms of a simple model that shows how
the length of the photoelectron trajectory changes with the magnetic field.

The experimental data of the antideuteron production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions are analyzed within a

The characterizations of a so-called ‘mild’ PbTe layer thermal-evaporated from an excess of Te (<1 mol.%) evaporable materials
are reported. The results reveal that the film obtained is polycrystalline and has a single-phase NaCl-type PbTe crystal structure.
It is also demonstrated that the film has a homogeneous surface morphology and a high degree of homogeneous distribution of
Te-rich components along the layer. The study of mid-infrared optical constants of a surface-polished film indicates that
the influence of surface scattering on optical properties is very small.

A simple model for nuclear structure functions in the region of small x and small and moderate Q2 is presented. It is a parameter-free extension, in the Glauber-Gribov approach to nuclear collisions, of a saturation model
for the nucleon. A reasonable agreement with experimental data on the ratios of nuclear structure functions is obtained. Nuclear
effects in the longitudinal-to-transverse cross section ratios are found to be small. Predictions of the model for values
of x smaller than those available to present experiments are given. The unintegrated gluon distribution and the behaviour of the
saturation scale which result from this model are shown and discussed.

We use evanescent waves in a counterpropagating beams configuration to study the adsorption/desorption processes at a Cs vapor/dielectric
interface in a sealed cell. Atoms close to the surface are velocity-selectively spin-polarized before adsorption by an amplitude-modulated
pump beam. We subsequently observe the contribution of the desorbed atoms to the probe-beam absorption by way of phase-sensitive
detection. We measure the number of desorbing polarized Cs atoms as a function of the surface temperature. The analysis of
results is done through a simple thermodynamical model for the atomic desorption and we discuss its validity to infer the
adsorption energy of the cesium atoms on a fused-quartz surface.

We study D-branes in the bosonic closed string theory whose automorphism group is the Bimonster group (the wreath product
of the Monster simple group with ℤ2). We give a complete classification of D-branes preserving the chiral subalgebra of Monster invariants and show that they
transform in a representation of the Bimonster. Our results apply more generally to self-dual conformal field theories which
admit the action of a compact Lie group on both the left- and right-moving sectors.

We discuss the effects of the solvent composition on the helix-coil transition of a polypeptide chain. We use a simple model
to demonstrate that improving the hydrogen-bonding ability of the solvent can make the transition less cooperative, without
affecting the transition temperature. This effect is very different from other solvent effects which primarily influence the
melting transition rather than the cooperativity.

As already shown by several authors, the reciprocity theorem can be rewritten as a simple formula connecting the longitudinal
coupling impedances of a particle travelling in the positive and negative directions of an infinitely long vacuum chamber
crossing a scattering structure (cavity, step junction, iris, etc.) of general shape. The formula is valid for any particle
velocity. As an example, we consider the case of two semi-infinite circular vacuum chambers with different radii; for this
case we give the explicit difference between the coupling impedances and the wake potentials.
