A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and dual polarization interferometry (DPI) have been utilized to study how the structure of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) multilayers is affected by the rinsing method (i.e., the termination of polyelectrolyte adsorption). The effect of the type of counterions used in the deposition solution was also investigated, and the polyelectrolyte multilayers were formed in a 0.5 M electrolyte solution (NaCl and KBr). From the measurements, it was observed that thicker layers were obtained when using KBr in the deposition solution than when using NaCl. Three different rinsing protocols have been studied: (i) the same electrolyte solution as used during multilayer formation, (ii) pure water, and (iii) first a salt solution (0.5 M) and then pure water. When the multilayer with PAH as the outermost layer was exposed to pure water, an interesting phenomenon was discovered: a large change in the energy dissipation was measured with the QCM. This could be attributed to the swelling of the layer, and from both QCM and DPI it is obvious that only the outermost PAH layer swells (to a thickness of 25-30 nm) because of a decrease in ionic strength and hence an increase in intra- and interchain repulsion, whereas the underlying layers retain a very rigid and compact structure with a low water content. Interestingly, the outermost PAH layer seems to obtain very similar thicknesses in water independent of the electrolyte used for the multilayer buildup. Another interesting aspect was that the measured thickness with the DPI evaluated by a single-layer model did not correlate with the estimated thickness from the model calculations performed on the QCM-D data. Thus, we applied a two-layer model to evaluate the DPI data and the results were in excellent agreement with the QCM-D results. To our knowledge, this evaluation of DPI data has not been done previously.  相似文献

Multilayered thin films consisting of alternating cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH), and anionic cellulose nanocrystals (CNs) were constructed using the dipping procedure by screening different experimental parameters: the drying step between each layer adsorption, the dipping time, the ionic strength of the PAH solution, and the concentration of CNs dispersion. We showed that the drying process and the ionic strength of PAH solution were crucial parameters for the successful construction of 8-bilayer films. Film thickness is mainly influenced by dipping time and CN concentration when using the dipping procedure without drying. Two architectures of adsorbed CN layers-a single or a double layer of CNs-were revealed on the basis of the thickness increment per bilayer, depending on experimental conditions. The layer adsorption process was investigated in real-time using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) experiments in an aqueous environment or by incorporating a drying step. On the basis of in situ construction of PAH-CN films in wet media, QCM-D data were indicative of highly hydrated films for which the progressive layer stacking is disturbed or prevented. QCM-D monitoring of CNs and PAH layer adsorption was monitored by incorporating a drying process. The impact of experimental parameters on PAH-CN multilayered construction and on CN layer configuration is discussed. This study offers new opportunities for tailoring the architecture of CN-based multilayer films.  相似文献

For the first time to the knowledge of the authors, well-defined and stable lignin model surfaces have been utilized as substrates in polyelectrolyte adsorption studies. The adsorption of polyallylamine (PAH), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) was monitored using quartz crystal microgravimetry with dissipation (QCM-D). The PECs were prepared by mixing PAH and PAA at different ratios and sequences, creating both cationic and anionic PECs with different charge levels. The adsorption experiments were performed in 1 and 10 mM sodium chloride solutions at pH 5 and 7.5. The highest adsorption of PAH and cationic PECs was found at pH 7.5, where the slightly negatively charged nature of the lignin substrate is more pronounced, governing electrostatic attraction of oppositely charged polymeric substances. An increase in the adsorption was further found when the electrolyte concentration was increased. In comparison, both PAA and the anionic PEC showed remarkably high adsorption to the lignin model film. The adsorption of PAA was further studied on silica and was found to be relatively low even at high electrolyte concentrations. This indicated that the high PAA adsorption on the lignin films was not induced by a decreased solubility of the anionic polyelectrolyte. The high levels of adsorption on lignin model surfaces found both for PAA and the anionic PAA-PAH polyelectrolyte complex points to the presence of strong nonionic interactions in these systems.  相似文献

Temperature- and pH-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)?Cco-acrylic acid (pNIPAm-co-AAc) microgels were deposited on glass substrates coated with polyelectrolyte multilayers composed of the polycation poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and the polyanion poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The microgel density and structure of the resultant films were investigated as a function of: (1) the number of PAH/PSS layers (layer thickness); (2) the charge on the outer layer of the polyelectrolyte multilayer film; and (3) the pH of microgel deposition solution. The resultant films were studied by differential interference contrast optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the coverage of the microgels on the surface was a complex function of the pH of the deposition solution, the charge on the outer layer of the polyelectrolyte thin film and the PAH/PSS layer thickness; although it appears that microgel charge plays the biggest role in determining the resultant surface coverage.  相似文献

The effect of solvent conditions on the growth of polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayer films comprising poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrenesulfonate sodium salt) (PSS) on planar substrates was investigated by means of surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (SPRS), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and atomic force microscopy techniques. The solvent quality was varied by the addition of ethanol to the PE solutions used for deposition of the layers, thus tuning the relative strength of electrostatic and secondary intermolecular and intramolecular interactions. Experiments were performed with PE solutions both without added electrolyte and containing 0.5 M NaCl. Decreasing the solvent quality (i.e., increasing the amount of ethanol in the adsorption solution) resulted in a marked increase of both the multilayer film thickness and mass loading, as determined from the SPRS spectra and QCM frequency shifts, respectively. With the solution composition approaching the precipitation point, thick PAH/PSS films were formed due to the screening of the electrostatic intra- and interchain repulsions and enhanced hydrophobic interactions between the polyelectrolyte chains. However, the films formed from water/ethanol mixtures remained stable upon subsequent exposure to water or salt-containing solutions: no significant film desorption occurred after up to 24 h of exposure to water or 0.5 M NaCl solutions. In addition, the effect of postdeposition exposure to water/ethanol mixtures was investigated for PE multilayers assembled from aqueous solutions. In this case, the optical thickness of the films was determined during exposure to water/ethanol mixtures, and instead of swelling, the polyelectrolyte films collapse to the surface as a result of the unfavorable segment-solvent interactions.  相似文献

A series of studies on microgel thin films is described, wherein quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to probe the properties of microstructured polymer thin films as a function of film architecture and solution pH. Thin films composed of pNIPAm-co-AAc microgels were constructed by using spin-coating layer-by-layer (scLbL) assembly with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) as a polycationic "glue". Our findings suggest that the interaction between the negatively charged microgels and the positively charged PAH has a significant impact on the pH responsivity of the film. These effects are observable in both the optical and mechanical behaviors of the films. The most significant changes in behavior are observed when the motional resistance of a quartz oscillator is monitored via QCM experiments. Slight changes to the film architecture and alternating the pH of the environment significantly changes the QCM and SPR responses, suggesting a pH-dependent swelling that is dependent on both particle swelling and polyelectrolyte de-complexation. Together, these studies allow for a deeper understanding of the morphological changes that take place in environmentally responsive microgel-based thin films.  相似文献

The nature of hexaethylene glycol mono-n-tetradecyl ether (C(14)EO(6)) layers adsorbed onto different model surfaces was systematically investigated by means of QCM-D (quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation) and ellipsometry. The amount of non-ionic surfactant adsorbed is determined both at hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces. In particular, the substrates employed were hydrophilic silica, hydrophobized silica (using dimethyldichlorosilane), and hydrophobized gold surfaces (using 10-thiodecane and 16-thiohexadecane). It was shown that the frequency shift obtained from the QCM-D experiments results in an overestimation of the adsorbed mass. This is attributed to two different effects, viz. water that is coupled to the adsorbed layer due to hydration of the polar region of the surfactant and second water that for other reasons is trapped within the adsorbed layer. Furthermore, from the ellipsometry data the adsorbed layer thickness is determined. By combining the thickness information and the dissipation parameter (obtained from the QCM-D experiments), we note that the dissipation parameter is insufficient in describing the viscoelastic character of thin surfactant films.  相似文献

Fabrication of complex molecular films of organic materials is one of the most important issues in modern nanoscience and nanotechnology. Soft materials with flexible properties have been given much attention and can be obtained through bottom up processing from functional molecules, where self-assembly based on supramolecular chemistry and designed assembly have become crucial processes and technologies. In this work, we report the successful incorporation of cationic laser dye rhodamine 6G abbreviated as R6G into the pre-assembled polyelectrolyte/surfactant complex film onto quartz substrate by electrostatic adsorption technique. Poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) was used as polycation and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) was used as anionic surfactant. UV-Vis absorption spec-troscopic characterization reveals the formation of only H-type aggregates of R6G in their aqueous solution and both H- and J-type aggregates in PAH/SDS/R6G complex layer-by-layber films as well as the adsorption kinetics of R6G onto the complex films. The ratio of the absorbance intensity of two aggregated bands in PAH/SDS/R6G complex films is merely independent of the concentration range of the SDS solution used to fabricate PAH/SDS com-plex self-assembled films. Atomic force microscopy reveals the formation of R6G aggregates in PAH/SDS/R6G complex films.  相似文献

The effect of pH on the build-up of polyelectrolyte multilayers, PEMs, composed by poly-L-lysine and heparin onto two different substrates, silica and gold, has been studied by means of ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, QCM-D. Ellipsometry results indicate that the dry mass grows exponentially with the number of layers, and that this amount is larger as the pH values are raised. From QCM-D data the viscoelastic properties of the multilayered structure have been obtained. These data reflect that PEMs become more viscoelastic as the pH values are increased for silica substrates, while for gold the highest viscoelastic behavior is obtained at neutral pH and the elastic behavior becomes dominant as the pH is further increased or decreased. By combining these two surface techniques it has been also possible to determine the solvent content in the multilayers and reach a deeper understanding of the internal structure.  相似文献

The electrostatically driven binding dynamics of a polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEMU) film was investigated in real-time using dual-beam polarization interferometry (DPI) and independently supported by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) studies. Multilayer assemblies of the polyanions poly[1-[4[(3-carboxy-4-hydroxyphenylazo)benzenesulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl sodium salt] (PAZO) and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) were respectively constructed with the polycation poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) on anionic functionalized substrates using the layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly method. DPI measurements indicate that polyelectrolyte adsorption occurs in three distinct stages. In the first stage, for approximately 5 s, coil-like segments of polyanion partially tether to the surface of the oppositely charged PEI. In the second stage, these coils unfurl over a period of approximately 10 s to cover the surface resulting in an increase in average density of the film. During the final adsorption step, the surface-bound polyelectrolyte diffuses into the multilayer assembly, exposing the surface to further deposition. This last step occurs over a much longer time period and results in a highly interpenetrated film containing a charge-overcompensated region at the film surface.  相似文献

An efficient method for characterizing wetting properties of heterogeneous surfaces produced by sequential adsorption of polyelectrolytes was developed. Three types of polyelectrolytes were used: polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH), polyethyleneimine (PEI), both of a cationic type, and polysodium 4-styrenesulfonate (PSS), of an anionic type. Multilayer films were prepared by 'layer-by-layer' (LbL) deposition technique. Natural ruby mica, glass, titanium foil and silicon wafers were used as the support material for PE films. Wetting of polyelectrolyte films was determined experimentally by contact angle measurements, using technique of direct image analysis of shape of sessile drops. Periodic oscillations in contact angle values were observed for multilayers terminated by polycation and polyanion, respectively, and the variations in contact angle values strongly depended on the conditions of adsorption and multilayer treatment after deposition. Therefore, the influence of ionic strength of polyelectrolyte solution used for deposition on wetting of multilayer films was considered and also the effect of conditioning in different environments was investigated. It is usually assumed that film properties and stability strongly depend on the first layer which is used to anchor a multilayer at the surface of support material. To investigate influence of the first layer, PAH/PSS films were compared with more complex ones having PEI as the first layer with a sequence of PSS/PAH deposited on top of it.  相似文献

This work describes the immobilization of beta-galactosidase onto polyelectrolyte multilayer assemblies of the polyanion poly[1-[4-(3-carboxy-4-hydroxyphenylazo)benzenesulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl, sodium salt] (PAZO) and the polycation poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) constructed by electrostatic self-assembly (ESA). A single layer of beta-galactosidase was deposited over a precursor film comprising up to five bilayers of the PEI/PAZO polyelectrolyte pair. The enzyme was deposited on both the polycationic (PEI) and the polyanionic (PAZO) surfaces. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), single-wavelength ellipsometry, and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy revealed differences in both the amount of beta-galactosidase incorporated in each of the multilayer assemblies and the resulting enzyme packing density in the films. The enzymatic films were immersed in a reaction solution containing o-nitrophenyl-beta-d-galactopyranoside (ONPG), and absorbance measurements were used to monitor the concentration of o-nitrophenyl (ONP), the product of the beta-galactosidase catalyzed by hydrolysis of ONPG. Although our data indicate that comparable amounts of beta-galactosidase are incorporated onto both surfaces, enzymatic activity is substantially inhibited when the beta-galactosidase is immobilized on the polyanionic surface compared to the enzyme on the polycationic surface. The difference in catalytic activities reflects the different abilities of the two polyelectrolytes to screen the protein's active site from the substrate environment. In both assemblies, the protein interpenetrated the PEI/PAZO multilayer, disrupting the J-aggregated state of the PAZO chromophores. This work demonstrates that the charge, conformation, and composition of underlying polyelectrolyte cushions have a significant effect on the structure and function of an immobilized protein within functional nanoassemblies.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Michel, M.; Vautier, D.; Voegel, J.-C.; Schaaf, P.; Ball, V. Langmuir 2004, 20, 4835), we showed that phospholipid vesicles can be incorporated into poly(glutamic-acid)/poly(allylamine) (PGA/PAH) multilayered polyelectrolyte films built by the alternated dipping of a surface in polyanion and polycation solutions. AFM imaging, quartz crystal microbalance, and ellipsometry suggested that the vesicles remain intact when adhering on the surface. In the present paper, we show that such films can also be realized by spraying both the polyelectrolyte solutions and the vesicles onto the surface. Using such vesicles filled with ferrocyanide ions, we prove by cyclic voltammetry that the sprayed vesicles remain intact when embedded in the multilayers. We show that multilayers containing two distinct layers of intact vesicles separated by several polyanion/polycation bilayers can also be constructed. Polyelectrolyte multilayers containing layers of phospholipid vesicles could act as reservoirs for drug or other biologically active molecules in controlled release bioactive coatings.  相似文献

The water-soluble zwitterionic polythiophene, poly(3-((S)-5-amino-5-carboxyl-3-oxapentyl)-2,5-thiophene) hydrochloride (POWT), is a conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) with properties well suited for biochip applications. CPEs readily form hydrogels when exposed to water-based buffer solutions or biomolecule solutions. In this work, we used in situ quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) monitoring to collect information on the interaction between POWT films exposed to buffers with different pH and POWT/DNA chains. Our data show that POWT swells significantly when exposed to low-pH buffers, such as pH 4 acetate, this is seen as an increase in thickness and decrease in viscosity obtained via a Voight-based modeling of combined f and D QCM-D measurements. The magnitude of thickness and viscosity change upon changing from a pH 10 carbonate buffer to pH 4 acetate is 100% increase in thickness and 50% decrease in viscosity. The response of the hydrogel under pH change is well correlated with fluorescence data from POWT films on glass. The state of the hydrogel is important during interaction with biomolecules; illustrated by the observation that a swollen CPE hydrogel adsorbs a higher amount of DNA than a compacted one. In agreement with previous results, the QCM-D data confirmed that the POWT/DNA hydrogel sense complementary DNA specifically and with negligible binding of noncomplementary DNA. These results are important for efficient constructions of biochips in water environments using this class of materials.  相似文献

Adsorption and deposition from turbid solutions are common in many industrial processes but notoriously difficult to investigate using standard optical techniques such as ellipsometry and reflectometry. In this report, we have addressed this problem by employing a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring ability, QCM-D. The system under investigation consisted of a cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(vinylamine), PVAm, and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, which were mixed together in 10 mM NaCl solution. The polyelectrolyte and the surfactant readily associate in bulk solution, resulting in increased solution turbidity once large aggregates are formed. The solutions were placed in contact with a polystyrene surface, and the adsorption process was monitored by following the changes in the resonance frequency and dissipation factor. The results obtained can in most cases be evaluated using the Sauerbrey relation, but in some cases a more elaborate analysis is necessary. It is found that PVAm adsorbs to polystyrene in the absence of SDS. In the turbid region, deposition is observed, and the sensed mass exceeds the sum of that obtained for each of the components alone. On the other hand, at high SDS concentrations, the surfactant dominates in the adsorbed layer. Adsorption equilibrium is in most cases established within 1-2 h, the exception being found around the solution composition that results in the formation of charge-neutralized aggregates. In this case, a slow deposition of aggregates persists over prolonged times.  相似文献

We report the synthesis of poly(acrylic acid-ran-vinylbenzyl acrylate) (PAArVBA), a photo-cross-linkable weak polyelectrolyte, and its incorporation into polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films. PEM films assembled from PAArVBA and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) are found to exhibit similar thickness trends with assembly pH as those previously reported for poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/PAH multilayers. Swelling properties of the as-built and photo-cross-linked films are studied by in situ ellipsometry. Two-dimensional masking techniques are used to pattern regions of high and low swelling, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), and to provide spatial control over the low-pH-induced microporosity transition exhibited by PAH/PAA PEMs. Films containing alternating blocks of PAH/PAArVBA bilayers and PAH/PAA bilayers were assembled, laterally photopatterned, and exposed to low-pH solution to generate nanoporosity leading to patterned Bragg reflectors, thereby demonstrating three-dimensional control over film structure in these weak PEM assemblies.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, pH, and salt concentration on the layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition of sodium poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS)/poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDEM) were investigated by use of a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). At pH 4, the frequency change (Deltaf) gradually decreased to a constant, indicating that the polyelectrolyte complexes of the layer were not dissolved. As the layer number increased, the -Deltaf oscillatedly increased, indicating that the thickness of the multilayer increased. At the same time, the dissipation change (DeltaD) oscillatedly increased with the layer number, indicating the chain interpenetration or complexation that led to the alternative swelling-and-shrinking of the outermost layer. For the same layer number, as the temperature increased, the amplitude of DeltaD increased, indicating that the chain interpenetration increased. The thickness also increased with temperature. Further increasing the pH to 7 led to a thicker layer, reflected in the larger amplitude of DeltaD. At pH 10, the polyelectrolytes no longer formed multilayers on the surface because of the lack of electrostatic interactions. On the other hand, the addition of NaCl also led to a thickness increase. The amplitude in DeltaD increased with NaCl concentration, indicating that the chain interpenetration increased. Our experiments indicated that the LBL deposition of polyelectrolytes was dominated by the chain interpenetration. Also, the polyelectrolyte complexes in the layer can redissolve into solution from the surface at a high temperature or a high salt concentration.  相似文献

Poly(acrylic acid- co-3-azidopropyl acrylate) and poly(acrylic acid- co-propargyl acrylate) have been alternately fabricated into a multilayer via the click reaction. The layer-by-layer deposition was monitored with a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) in real time. The response of the multilayer under continuous flow of a bromate-sulfite-ferrocyanide solution with pH oscillation has also been investigated by use of QCM-D. As the pH oscillates between 3.1 and 6.6, either the frequency shift (Delta f) or the dissipation shift (Delta D) periodically varies with a constant amplitude, clearly indicating that the multilayer swells and shrinks oscillatedly. The changes of thickness, shear viscosity, and elastic shear modulus further indicate the oscillation.  相似文献
