Single crystal neutron diffraction studies have been performed on the S = 3/2 kagome staircase compound Co(3)V(2)O(8) with a magnetic field applied along the magnetization easy-axis ([Formula: see text]). Previous zero-field measurements (Chen Y et al 2006 Phys. Rev. B 74 014430) reported a rich variety of magnetic phases, with a ferromagnetic ground state as well as incommensurate, transversely polarized spin density wave (SDW) phases (with a propagation vector of [Formula: see text]) interspersed with multiple commensurate lock-in transitions. The magnetic phase diagram with [Formula: see text] adds further complexity. For small applied fields, μ(0)H ≈ 0.05 T, the commensurate lock-in phases are destabilized in favor of the incommensurate SDW ones, while slightly larger applied fields restore the commensurate lock-in phase with δ = 1/2 and yield a new commensurate phase with δ = 2/5. For measurements in an applied field, higher-order scattering is observed that corresponds to the second harmonic.  相似文献

Chromium-doped [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] have been studied by both EPR and ENDOR spectroscopy. [Formula: see text] ions enter the fluorite structure in distorted substitution cation sites. In both matrices the distortion observed is tetragonal. X- and Q-band EPR measurements at temperatures between 4 and 300 K allowed us to determine the ion symmetry and the following spin-Hamiltonian parameters: [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text]; and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text]. For [Formula: see text], the weak superhyperfine interaction of [Formula: see text] with the surrounding [Formula: see text] ions has been studied by both EPR and ENDOR techniques for [Formula: see text]. No ENDOR signals were detected for [Formula: see text]. The results are tentatively explained in terms of a Jahn - Teller effect corresponding to [Formula: see text] coupling strongly stabilized by lattice stresses, although other possible origins for the distortion cannot be completely ruled out.  相似文献

We consider the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with alternating spin exchange in the presence of additional modulation of exchange on odd bonds with period 3. We study the ground state magnetic phase diagram of this hexamer spin chain in the limit of very strong antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange on odd bonds using the numerical Lanczos method and bosonization approach. In the limit of strong magnetic field commensurate with the dominating AF exchange, the model is mapped onto an effective XXZ Heisenberg chain in the presence of uniform and spatially modulated fields, which is studied using the standard continuum-limit bosonization approach. In the absence of additional hexamer modulation, the model undergoes a quantum phase transition from a gapped phase into the only one gapless Lüttinger liquid (LL) phase by increasing the magnetic field. In the presence of hexamer modulation, two new gapped phases are identified in the ground state at magnetization equal to [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] of the saturation value. These phases reveal themselves also in the magnetization curve as plateaus at corresponding values of magnetization. As a result, the magnetic phase diagram of the hexamer chain shows seven different quantum phases, four gapped and three gapless, and the system is characterized by six critical fields which mark quantum phase transitions between the ordered gapped and the LL gapless phases.  相似文献

Single-crystal neutron scattering experiments have been performed to study magnetic excitations in [Formula: see text], in which the pseudo-gap of CeNiSn is suppressed by the doping. In CeNiSn there are two inelastic excitation peaks at [Formula: see text] and 4 meV, which correspond to dynamic antiferromagnetic correlations. In [Formula: see text] the 2 meV peak is smeared out, whereas the 4 meV peak becomes very weak and broad, but preserves the same quasi-one-dimensional character as that for CeNiSn. These results suggest the strong relation between the antiferromagnetic correlations and the pseudo-gap formation.  相似文献

The physical properties of the ionic conductor [Formula: see text], obtained by dissolution of lithium trifluoromethanesulphonylimide in poly(propylene oxide), have been investigated for several values of n. The glass transition temperature [Formula: see text] has been established from both DSC and NMR techniques. The diffusion coefficients of [Formula: see text]-containing species have been determined by the pulsed magnetic field gradient technique. The behaviour of the proton relaxation time [Formula: see text] versus temperature and concentration has been correlated to the glass temperature. The behaviour of the proton transverse relaxation function, obtained by the spin-echo technique, has been interpreted using a simple model in which two regimes and consequently two transverse relaxation times coexist and are assigned to the `entangled' and `non-entangled' parts of the high-molecular-weight polymer chains investigated.  相似文献

The olivine compound Mn(2)GeO(4) is shown to feature both a ferroelectric polarization and a ferromagnetic magnetization that are directly coupled and point along the same direction. We show that a spin spiral generates ferroelectricity, and a canted commensurate order leads to weak ferromagnetism. Symmetry suggests that the direct coupling between the ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is mediated by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that exist only in the ferroelectric phase, controlling both the sense of the spiral rotation and the canting of the commensurate structure. Our study demonstrates how multicomponent magnetic structures found in magnetically frustrated materials like Mn(2)GeO(4) provide a new route towards functional materials that exhibit coupled ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity.  相似文献

The magnetic and resonance properties of cylindrical magnets at first-order phase transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic state were theoretically studied. It has been shown that in the external magnetic field directed perpendicularly to the rotation axis, formation of a specific domain structure of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic layers can be energetically favorable. The parameters of cylindrical phase domains as well as their dependences on temperature, magnetic field and material characteristics have been calculated. Peculiarities of the magnetic resonance spectra appearing as a result of the phase domain formation have been considered. Dependence of the resonance field of the system of ferromagnetic domains on magnetization and temperature has been obtained.  相似文献

The isotope composition of dissolved sulphate and strontium in atmospheric deposition, groundwater, mine water and river water in the region of Freiberg was investigated to better understand the fate of these components in the regional and global water cycle. Most of the isotope variations of dissolved sulphates in atmospheric deposition from three locations sampled bi- or tri-monthly can be explained by fractionation processes leading to lower [Formula: see text] (of about 2-3‰) and higher [Formula: see text] (of about 8-10‰) values in summer compared with the winter period. These samples showed a negative correlation between [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] values and a weak positive correlation between [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] values. They reflect the sulphate formed by aqueous oxidation from long-range transport in clouds. However, these isotope variations were superimposed by changes of the dominating atmospheric sulphate source. At two of the sampling points, large variations of mean annual [Formula: see text] values from atmospheric bulk deposition were recorded. From 2008 to 2009, the mean annual [Formula: see text] value increased by about 5‰; and decreased by about 4‰ from 2009 to 2010. A change in the dominating sulphate source or oxidation pathways of SO(2) in the atmosphere is proposed to cause these shifts. No changes were found in corresponding [Formula: see text] values. Groundwater, river water and some mine waters (where groundwater was the dominating sulphate source) also showed temporal shifts in their [Formula: see text] values corresponding to those of bulk atmospheric deposition, albeit to a lower degree. The mean transit time of atmospheric sulphur through the soil into the groundwater and river water was less than a year and therefore much shorter than previously suggested. Mining activities of about 800 years in the Freiberg region may have led to large subsurface areas with an enhanced groundwater flow along fractures and mined-refilled ore lodes which may shorten transit times of sulphate from precipitation through groundwater into river water.  相似文献

In this work elastic measurements on [Formula: see text] (ALHS) which were carried out in the low-frequency range between 1 and 50 Hz are presented. The temperature dependence of the inverse elastic compliance [Formula: see text] has been determined between 90 K and 420 K. Distinct anomalies have been found in the temperature dependence of [Formula: see text], which are connected to the motion of domain walls in the ferroelastic phase below [Formula: see text]. Around [Formula: see text] a (partial) ferroelastic `domain freezing' phenomenon has been observed. To the knowledge of the authors this is the first time that pure ferroelastic domain freezing has been reported. However, below [Formula: see text] the domain walls seem to retain a certain vibrational degree of freedom which could be responsible for an additional anomaly of the loss modulus which was observed. The elastic behaviour of a crystal of ALHS is dependent on the `history' of the given sample. During temperature cycling [Formula: see text] shows differences between the first run of heating and cooling and later runs. Finally, some basic insights concerning the domain wall motion were obtained; it was found that the domain wall mobility decreases by three orders of magnitude in the temperature region 170 - 230 K.  相似文献

We present a computational study of the electronic structure of the stoichiometric liquid zero-gap semiconductors [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. The geometry of the fluids is described by the primitive model of charged hard spheres; the electronic structure is modelled using a tight-binding Hamiltonian. The density of states is computed considering the Madelung potential fluctuations and the topological disorder characteristic of an ionic fluid. Only the introduction of nonzero tight-binding hopping matrix elements - equivalent to the formation of chemical bonds - induces a pseudogap between the chalcogenide conduction band and the silver valence band. The Fermi level can be located in a region of a small density of states; eigenstates at [Formula: see text] are likely to exhibit disorder-induced localization.  相似文献

We study pressurised self-avoiding ring polymers in two dimensions using Monte Carlo simulations, scaling arguments and Flory-type theories, through models which generalise the model of Leibler, Singh and Fisher (Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 1989 (1987)). We demonstrate the existence of a thermodynamic phase transition at a non-zero scaled pressure [Formula: see text] , where [Formula: see text] = Np/4[Formula: see text] , with the number of monomers N [Formula: see text] ∞ and the pressure p [Formula: see text] 0 , keeping [Formula: see text] constant, in a class of such models. This transition is driven by bond energetics and can be either continuous or discontinuous. It can be interpreted as a shape transition in which the ring polymer takes the shape, above the critical pressure, of a regular N -gon whose sides scale smoothly with pressure, while staying unfaceted below this critical pressure. Away from these limits, we argue that the transition is replaced by a sharp crossover. The area, however, scales with N(2) for all positive p in all such models, consistent with earlier scaling theories.  相似文献

This paper presents the experimentally determined precise transport data - (tracer) diffusion coefficients in both water and heavy-water environments, together with molar conductivity and viscosity of (ortho)phosphoric acid in water over an extended concentration range at [Formula: see text]. The concentration (c) dependence of the diffusion coefficients (D), viscosity [Formula: see text] and molar conductivity [Formula: see text] have been analysed. An anomalous depression in the D - [Formula: see text] curve for both [Formula: see text] - [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] - [Formula: see text] systems in the neighbourhood of 0.8 M is observed, which is complementary to the sudden sharp rise observed in the [Formula: see text] curve in the neighbourhood of 0.8 M. Although the occurrence of such an anomaly could be inferred from the earlier conductance, e.m.f. and diffusion data, it was never conclusively inferred earlier. This new set of diffusion and viscosity data clearly delineates anomalies in the ion transport of phosphoric acid.  相似文献

The influence of spin fluctuations on the magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic helimagnet MnSi has been studied in the Hubbard model taking into account the antisymmetric relativistic Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction for band electrons. The obtained equations of the magnetic state indicate the correlation between the fine structure of the density of electronic states and the magnetization and coefficient of mode–mode coupling. It has been shown that the position of the Fermi energy in the immediate proximity on the point of the local minimum of the density of electronic states leads to large zero spin fluctuations at low magnetization of the helimagnet. When approaching from down the Néel point (approximately, at 0.9TN), the zero fluctuation disappear, and the temperature rise of thermal spin fluctuation is accompanied by the change in the sign of the coefficient of mode–mode coupling. A magnetic field perpendicular to the helicoids plane brings about the formation and subsequent “collapse” of the helimagnetic cone. However, the condition of the change in the sign of the coefficient of mode–mode coupling divides the MnSi phase diagram into two parts, one of which corresponds to the ferromagnetic state induced by the field, and the other corresponding to the paramagnetic state. In this case, the h–T diagram has a specific region, inside which the paramagnetic and the ferromagnetic state are instable. The boundaries of the region agree with the experimental data on the boundaries of the anomalous phase (a phase). It has been found that the results of calculations of the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility agree with the experimental data.  相似文献

We present a series of rigorous examples of the Kondo lattice model that exhibit full ferromagnetism in the ground state. The models are defined in one-, two- and three-dimensional lattices, and are characterized by a range of hopping terms, specific electron filling, and large ferromagnetic coupling. Our examples show that a sufficient strong but finite exchange coupling between conduction electrons and localized spins could overcome the competition from mobility of a finite density of electrons and drive the system from a paramagnetic phase to a ferromagnetic phase. We also establish a relation of ferromagnetism between the Hubbard model and Kondo lattice model. Meanwhile some rigorous results on ferromagnetism in the corresponding Hubbard model are presented. We study the ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated spin-[Formula: see text] antiferromagnet with J(2) = xJ(1) > 0 (J(1) > 0) on the honeycomb lattice, using the coupled-cluster method. We present results for the ground-state energy, magnetic order parameter and plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) susceptibility. We find a paramagnetic PVBC phase for x(c(1)) < x < x(c(2)), where x(c(1)) ≈ 0.207 ± 0.003 and x(c(2)) ≈ 0.385 ± 0.010. The transition at x(c(1)) to the Néel phase seems to be a continuous deconfined transition (although we cannot exclude a very narrow intermediate phase in the range 0.21 ? x ? 0.24), while that at x(c(2)) is of first-order type to another quasiclassical antiferromagnetic phase that occurs in the classical version of the model only at the isolated and highly degenerate critical point [Formula: see text]. The spiral phases that are present classically for all values x > 1/6 are absent for all x ? 1.  相似文献

The results of the magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements on polycrystalline Eu(3)Ni(4)Ga(4) are presented. Eu(3)Ni(4)Ga(4) forms in Na(3)Pt(4)Ge(4)-type cubic crystal structure (space group [Formula: see text]). The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of Eu(3)Ni(4)Ga(4) confirms the divalent state (Eu(2+)) of Eu ions with an effective magnetic moment μ(eff)?=?7.98?μ(B). At low fields, e.g.?at 0.01?T, a magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered state occurs at T(N)?=?10.9?K, which is further confirmed by the temperature dependence of the heat capacity and electrical resistivity. The field dependence of isothermal magnetization at 2?K reveals the presence of two field induced metamagnetic transitions at H(c1) and H(c2)?=?0.55 and 1.2?T, respectively and a polarized phase above H(PO)?=?1.7?T. The reduced jump in the heat capacity at the transition temperature, ΔC|(T(N))?=?13.48?J/mol-Eu?K would indicate an amplitude modulated (AM) antiferromagnetic structure. An interesting feature is that a large negative magnetoresistance, MR?=?[ρ(H)?-?ρ(0)]/ρ(0), is observed in the vicinity of magnetic transition even up to 2T(N). Similar large magnetoresistance has been observed in the paramagnetic state in some Gd and Eu based alloys and has been attributed to the magneto-polaronic effect.  相似文献

Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements revealed a ferromagnetic phase transition taking place near room temperature in quasi-two-dimensional dodecylamine-intercalated vanadium pentoxide with a mixed structure of coexisting lamellar and rectangular phases. It is shown that the ferromagnetism can be ascribed to the rectangular phase, whereas the paramagnetic lamellar phase undergoes no magnetic transition.  相似文献

The electronic structure of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic fcc Ni and tetragonal Ni has been determined by means of self-consistent semi-relativistic linear muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) energy band studies. The paramagnetic studies used the local density exchange-correlation potential of Hedin et al. whereas the ferromagnetic spin-polarized calculations used the local spin-density exchange-correlation potential of Gunnarson et al. The magnetic moments (0.54 μB), magnetization density, Fermi contact hyperfine fields and Fermi surface areas are found to agree with experiment and with other theoretical calculations, notably those of Wang and Callaway. For tetragonal Ni, distorted along the [111] direction similar to the local strain of Ni layers between Cu layers in modulated structures, the magnetic moment (0.46 μB) and resultant hyperfine fields are reduced substantially from that determined for fcc Ni.  相似文献

This paper reports on the results of a theoretical investigation into the magnetic and resonance properties of thin films in the range of the transition from a paramagnetic state to a ferromagnetic state in the case where the magnetic transition is a first-order phase transformation. It is demonstrated that, in an external magnetic field directed perpendicular to the film plane, the formation of a specific domain structure consisting of domains of the coexisting paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases can appear to be energetically favorable. The parameters of the equilibrium system of stripe phase domains and their dependences on the temperature, the magnetic field, and the characteristics of the material are calculated. The specific features of the magnetic resonance spectra under the conditions of formed stripe phase domains are considered. A relationship is derived for the dependence of the resonance field of the system of ferromagnetic domains on the magnetization and temperature. It is shown that the alternating external field can fulfill an orientation function in the formation of stripe phase domains.  相似文献

The dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements on two dimensional layered manganite La1.2Ba1.8Mn2O7 samples reveal the occurrence of ferromagnetism above room temperature with ferromagnetic (FM) to paramagnetic (PM) transitions at 338 K. The bifurcation temperatures shown by the zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) dc magnetization curves at high temperatures shift towards lower temperatures as the applied field is increased from 100 to 2500 Oe. The data are suggestive of a large magnetic anisotropy due to the strong competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions resulting in a spin-glass-like state. Ru doping is found to enhance the ferromagnetism and metallicity of the system in a remarkable way. The magnetoresistance (MR) values obtained are very high and about 40% even at 260 K for the undoped sample.  相似文献
