60 years of scientific exploits

In this issue, we continue publication of the materials of the 56th International Conference on Nuclear Spectroscopy and the Structure of the Atomic Nucleus, which was held at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center of the All-Russia Research Institute of Experimental Physics (Sarov). This conference was devoted to the 60th anniversary of this institute; therefore, the first paper is devoted to its history.     

Generation of electric fields by dust grains during the explosions of condensed explosive charges in air

Results are presented from two-dimensional numerical simulations of the generation of electric signals during the explosions of chemical explosive charges in air. The calculated results are compared with the data from experiments carried out under the auspices of the International Science and Technology Center (project no. 835) at the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics (Russian Academy of Sciences), the Research Institute of Pulsed Technique (the Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation), and the Zababakhin All-Russia Research Institute of Technical Physics, Russian Federal Nuclear Center (the Ministry of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation). The electric field is assumed to be generated by charged dust grains produced during the explosion of a condensed chemical explosive charge. Numerical predictions based on the dusty plasma model for describing the parameters of dust grains are found to agree satisfactorily with experiment.

Compilation of low-energy gamma rays

A compilation of selected nuclear gamma rays has been prepared in order to identify the most attractive candidate nuclei for a gamma-ray laser. The compilation consists of two parts: (1) a listing of selected gamma rays emanating from an isomeric state and (2) a listing of selected gamma rays following the decay of an energy level close to the isomeric state. The compilation is based on the latest “Nuclear Data Sheets” (Ref. 1) for each A-chain available on 1 January 1987.

New nuclear charge radii database

Several large relational databases (DBs) containing various atomic nucleus parameters and nuclear reaction features were produced at the Centre for Photonuclear Experiments Data (Centr Dannyh Fotoyadernykh Eksperimentov (CDFE)) of the Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, Moscow State University). The sources are numerical data founds maintained by International Nuclear Data Centers Network of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and produced by CDFE. The original CDFE product is the electronic “Chart of Quadrupole Nuclear Deformations” which includes ∼2000 sets of data on nuclei quadrupole moments Q and quadrupole deformation parameters β₂ for ∼1500 nuclei. At last time, in the frame of joint research with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) that electronic Chart was supplemented with the data on nuclear mean-root-square (MRS) charge radii (∼900 isotopes of 90 elements (Z = 1–96, N = 0–152)) and therefore transformed into the “Chart of Nucleus Shape and Size Parameters”—complete collection of data under discussion. New Chart allows one to investigate the isotopic and isotonic behavior of nuclei quadrupole moments, parameters of quadrupole deformation and charge radii, and study the R(Z, N) surface structure and R(A) dependence of the fine structure. Evaluation of Cross Section of <Superscript>10</Superscript>Be Radioactive Nuclei Production at Deuteron Interaction with <Superscript>9</Superscript>Be

The demand for more precise nuclear data on beryllium interactions is growing along with the development of controlled fusion facilities, where beryllium is already used or is planned to be used as a structural material in the coating of the first inner wall of the tokamak (the tritium breeding blanket). Evaluated cross sections of the ⁹Be(d, x)¹⁰Be_gs reaction at deuteron energies ranging from 0 to 22 MeV are presented. All available experimental data and the mathematical tools of the SaBa [1] electronic library developed at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics are used to obtain these cross sections.

Fundamental nuclear physics research at RFNC VNIIEF over 60 years

The role of fundamental nuclear physics research in development of nuclear weapons is considered. The main characteristics of the experimental facilities of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, All-Russia Research Institute of Experimental Physics are reported.     

Evaluated integral cross sections of the <Superscript>7</Superscript>Li(<Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis>, α)<Superscript>4</Superscript>He reaction

New data on the energy dependence of integral cross sections of the ⁷Li(p, α)⁴He reaction are obtained to develop the SaBa (Sarov Base) library of evaluated and experimental nuclear data at the Russian Federal Nuclear Center, All-Russia Research Institute of Experimental Physics [1]. The sum of smooth and resonance parts is used as an approximating function in the current version of the SaBa database. The smooth part is described by cubic splines. Lorentzians are used to describe resonance regions. Experimental data already available in the SaBa library are analyzed to obtain new evaluated data on the ⁷Li(p, α)⁴He reaction, and a search is conducted for new data in domestic and foreign literary sources.

本文简要报导了ＣＮＤＣ近两年来的核数据活动及核数据研究进展情况．并提出推广服务的内容． The activity and progtess on nucleat data research of Chinese Nuclear Data Center (CNDC)in recent two years are inttoduced.     

Ion selection in accelerator mass spectrometer at the budker institute of nuclear physics

This article describes the special features of the acceleration mass spectrometer (AMS) created at the Institute of Nuclear Physics for the Geochronology of the Cenozoic Era Center of Collective Use; it significantly reduces the background during the process of registering cosmogenic carbon ¹⁴C. The results of experiments on measuring the background and extraction of a pure beam of radiocarbon are provided.

On the algebraic type of space-times possessing a nonsingular Killing horizon

The characteristic initial-value problem is discussed for the Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell equations when initial data are specified on two branches of a bifurcate Killing horizon. In the latter case it is assumed that the principal null directions of the Maxwell tensor coincide with those of a Killing bivector. A theorem specifying necessary and sufficient conditions for such space-times to be Petrov typeD is derived and consequences of this with respect to Israel's theorem and Robinson's theorem are discussed.Part of this work was initiated while the author attended the summer school on global analysis held at the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy (1972).     

Optical Pick-up for Blue Optical Recording at NA = 0.85

Sony and Philips have recently developed the basic technology for a 22.5 GB optical recording system, based on a blue laser (#x03BB; = 405 nm) and high numerical aperture (NA = 0.85) objective lens. This system is referred to by the acronym DVR (for Digital Video Recording). In this paper we describe the relization of a compact optical pickup unit capable of writing and reading data on disc according to the DVR format.This paper was originally presented at the 2nd International Conference on Optical Design and Fabrication, ODF2000 which was held on November 15-17, 2000 at the International Conference Center Tokyo Waseda University, Japan.     

MEND——-—个计算250 MeV以下中重核数据的程序(英文)

基于球型光学模型、 预平衡发射和Hauser Feshbach统计等理论, 编制了MEND程序（Medium Energy Nuclear Data）, 该程序适用于中重原子核在入射粒子能量低于250 MeV的中低能区的全套核数据计算。对于中子和质子在250 MeV以下诱发的核反应, 其全截面、 反应截面、 弹性散射微分截面、 双微分截面和能谱等理论计算值与相应的实验值基本一致。MEND是计算中低能核反应的基础程序, 在我国已被广泛用于核数据计算及建立中能核数据库Based on the spherical optical model, pre equilibrium statistical theory, and Hauser Feshbach theory, etc., the code MEND (Medium Energy Nuclear Data) is written for calculating the complete set of nuclear data of medium heavy nuclei in medium low energy region (≤250 MeV). For the reactions induced by neutron and proton below 250 MeV, the total cross sections, reaction cross sections, elastic scattering differential cross sections, double differential cross sections and energy spectra, etc. calculated by the code MEND, generally agree with those corresponding experimental data. MEND is a foundational program for nuclear reaction in medium low energy region and is wildely used for nuclear data calculation and establishing ENDF/B6 format files of medium low energy region in China.
