The mass distributions and total c.m. kinetic energies of fission fragments formed in the reaction40Ar+243Am at bombarding energies of 214, 222, 240 and 300 MeV have been measured using the angular correlation method. Angular distributions and anisotropy for 222 and 300 MeV have also been obtained. A symmetric mass distribution corresponding to the decay of a highly excited compound nucleus was obtained at 300 MeV bombarding energy. However, with decreasing bombarding energy the fission fragment mass distribution becomes asymmetric, the most probable heavy fragment mass being about 200–210 amu.  相似文献

The dualistic view of fission and evaporation as two distinct compound nucleus processes is substituted with a unified view in which fission, complex fragment emission and light particle evaporation are seen as part of a single process. The underlying connection between these decay modes is the mass asymmetry coordinate and the ridge line as the locus of the associated conditional barriers. The theoretical generalization is carried out explicitly. Complex fragment production at all mass asymmetries, throughout the periodic table, from low to intermediate bombarding energies is discussed in the light of compound nucleus decay.  相似文献

Systematic studies of heavy-ion induced fission reactions at near-barrier energies carried out in the last decade have brought out many interesting aspects of fission process in general. The recent experimental findings which show dependence of fission fragment angular distributions on entrance channel, shape, size and spin of the interacting nuclei and shell closure of the intermediate compound nucleus are summarised in the present paper.  相似文献

It is shown that nuclear target fragmentation in proton and heavy ion induced reactions, in particular the following experimental facts concerning the mass-yield distribution can be understood in terms of a semiclassical model:(i) its independence on the mass of the projectile at approximately the same incident energies,(ii) its trend of approaching a limit at higher bombarding energies,(iii) its “U-formed” shape at sufficiently high bombarding energies. Standard methods in statistical theory of chemical equilibrium are used to calculate the mass-yield distribution for medium and heavy target nuclei in high-energy nuclear reactions where the Coulomb interaction between the fragments is taken into account selfconsistently. The result shows: The fact that the decaying rest target nucleus and its fragments are bounded objects of finite size and finite charge have significant influences, especially on the form of the mass-yield distributions.  相似文献

The mechanisms and the features of the main types of nuclear ternary fission (that is, true ternary fission, in which a third particle is emitted before the rupture of the fissioning nucleus into fragments, and delayed ternary fission, in which a third particle is emitted from fission fragments going apart) are investigated within quantum-mechanical fission theory. The features of T-odd asymmetry in true ternary nuclear fission induced by cold polarized neutrons are investigated for the cases where alpha particles, prescission neutrons, and photons appear as third particles emitted by fissioning nuclei, the Coriolis interaction of the spin of the polarized fissioning nucleus with the spin of the third particle and the interference between the fission amplitudes for neutron resonances excited in the fissioning nucleus in the case of projectile-neutron capture being taken into account. For the cases where third particles emitted by fission fragments are evaporated neutrons or photons, T-odd asymmetries in delayed ternary nuclear fission induced by cold polarized neutrons are analyzed with allowance for the mechanism of pumping of large fission-fragment spins oriented orthogonally to the fragment-emission direction and with allowance for the interference between the fission amplitudes for neutron resonances.  相似文献

The properties of neutron emission from fragments formed in the spontaneous fission of 252Cf and in the thermal-neutron-induced fission of 235U are analyzed on the basis of the statistical model of nuclear reactions. Upon extracting the mean excitation energies of fission fragments from experimental data on the mean multiplicities of neutrons, the observables of neutron emission can be described over wide ranges of total kinetic energies and masses. The observed values of mean fragment spins are also reproduced. A method for calculating the isomeric ratios of the independent yields of fission fragments that is based on the cascade-evaporation model of excited-nucleus decay is employed to describe experimental data on 235U fission induced by thermal neutrons and on 238U fission induced by alpha particles. The effect exerted on the isomeric ratios for fission fragments by two different assumptions on the spin distributions of primary-fragment populations—the assumption of the distribution associated with rotational degrees of freedom and the assumption of the distribution associated with the internal degrees of freedom of fully accelerated fragments—is investigated.  相似文献

The recoil properties of ten fission products with masses ranging from 72 to 136 formed in the fission of 238U with protons of energies 25–85 MeV have been determined radiochemically by the integral-range method. From the recoil properties of the products and the Monte Carlo cascade calculations the average kinetic energy, cascade deposition energy, and anisotropy parameter for each fission product has been calculated. The kinetic energy and the excitation energy of the primary fragments leading to the observed fission product, and the total kinetic energy and the total excitation energy of the primary fragment pair have also been calculated.

The results indicate that up to a bombarding energy of 40 MeV fission takes place predominantly by the compound nucleus mechanism, with an increasing contribution of the direct interaction mechanism as the bombarding energy increases. The kinetic energy deficit was found to decrease with increasing bombarding energy. The fission products formed from the symmetric mode of fission have a larger separation distance between the charge centres of their respective primary fragments than those for the asymmetric mode of fission.  相似文献

Recent developments in the study of fission and fission-like reactions are briefly reviewed. After a brief introduction of some of the important features of the fission process, binary fission and fission-like processes in heavy ion-induced reactions are discussed. It is shown that studies of the fission fragment angular distributions which provide a way to determine relative contributions of compound nucleus fission and non-equilibrium fission-like events in heavy ion-induced fission have proved to be quite valuable in investigating the very shortK-equilibration times of the order of 10−20 s involved in the nuclear dynamics of the dinuclear complex on its way to compound nucleus formation following nucleus-nucleus collision.  相似文献

Quantitative explanation for the odd-even effect on fragment angular momenta in the low-energy fission of actinides have been provided by taking into account the single particle spin of the odd proton at the fragment’s scission point deformation in the case of odd-Z fragments along with the contribution from the population of angular momentum bearing collective vibrations of the fissioning nucleus at scission point. The calculated fragment angular momenta have been found to be in very good agreement with the experimental data for fragments in the mass number region of 130–140. The odd-even effect observed in the fragment angular momenta in the low-energy fission of actinides has been explained quantitatively for the first time.   相似文献

Within quantum-mechanical fission theory, it is shown that, in the low-energy fission of actinide nuclei, the projection K of the spin of a fissile nucleus onto its symmetry axis is conserved as this nucleus traverses the second well of the deformation potential and the region of descent from the external fission barrier to the scission point, this spin projection being an integral of motion despite the effect of Coriolis interaction. This leads to the conclusion that the fission probability is determined by the concerted effect of the internal- and external-fission-barrier penetration factors. A global analysis of information that can be extracted from experimental investigations of (n, f) and (γ, f) reactions and which can be employed in theoretically describing fission mechanisms is performed.  相似文献

T-odd asymmetries in the angular distributions of evaporation neutrons emitted by thermalized fission fragments in the fission of axially symmetric deformed nuclei by cold polarized neutrons are investigated within the quantum theory of fission. The asymmetries in question are due to the anisotropy of angular distributions of evaporation neutrons in the center-of-mass systems of the fission fragments, and this anisotropy arises from the orientation of large-value fission fragment spins in the direction perpendicular to the direction K 0 of the symmetry axis of the fissioning nucleus at the time of its scission, caused by zero wriggling vibrations of the fissioning nucleus. The angle of rotation of the vector k 0 with respect to the asymptotic direction k 0 of the fissioning nucleus symmetry axis is calculated with allowance for the interference of fission amplitudes of neutron resonances excited in a fissioning nucleus as it captures an incident neutron. It is shown that the T-odd asymmetry coefficient for evaporation neutrons is close in structure and value to the analogous coefficient for evaporation γ-rays.  相似文献

The angular momentum transferred to fragment spins has been studied in the damped nuclear reactions Ar+Bi at 255 MeV and 295 MeV and Ni+Pb at 435 MeV from measurement of the angular distribution of the fission fragments of the heavy-recoil nucleus in coincidence with the projectile-like fragment. The heavy-fragment spin is strongly aligned along the normal to the reaction plane and the rigid-rotation limit of the dinuclear system is attained. The dealignment mechanisms produce spin components mainly located in a plane approximately perpendicular to the heavy-recoil lab direction. They are well described by a dynamical model based on the nucleon exchange between the two ions during the collision. The spin-component fluctuations reach high values. In the heavy-recoil direction, these fluctuations are increasing with the total kinetic energy loss and the charge transfer from the projectile to the target. The spin values extracted from both the angular distributions and the fission probabilities are seen to be compatible.  相似文献

Fission fragment mass and energy distributions and their correlations have been measured for the 16O and 19F + 209Bi reactions over a wide range of excitation energies ( E * = 30-50 MeV). It is observed that in the case of 16O + 209Bi reaction, the average total fragment kinetic energy, <TKE> is nearly independent of the bombarding energy. However, in the case of 19F + 209Bi reaction, the average total kinetic energy of the fission fragments shows a peaking behaviour near the barrier. The variation in <TKE> at near barrier energies in the 19F + 209Bi system seems to be correlated with corresponding strong variation in the variance of the fragment mass distribution. The present results may imply certain dynamical effects leading to compact scission configurations in the fission of 19F + 209Bi system at near barrier bombarding energies. Induced fission reactions of fissioning compound nuclei that result from the capture of various incident particles (nucleons, γ rays, multiply charged ions) by target nuclei are investigated using the generalized nucleus model and the Wigner random matrix method. The effect produced on the fission widths of the compound nucleus by the competition between the excitation energies of its collective vibrational degrees of freedom that lead to its scission into fission fragments and its rotational and multi-quasiparticle states is analyzed. Bohr’s concept of transition fission states developed for near-barrier nuclear fission is generalized to the induced fission of nuclei with the excitation energies noticeably higher than the fission barriers. The temperature of the fissioning nucleus in the vicinity of the point of its scission into fission fragments is estimated.  相似文献

The average multiplicity of gamma rays emitted by fragments originating from the fission of 226Th nuclei formed via a complete fusion of 18O and 208Pb nuclei at laboratory energies of 18O projectile ions in the range E lab = 78–198.5 MeV is measured and analyzed. The total spins of fission fragments are found and used in an empirical analysis of the energy dependence of the anisotropy of these fragments under the assumption that their angular distributions are formed in the vicinity of the scission point. The average temperature of compound nuclei at the scission point and their average angular momenta in the entrance channel are found for this analysis. Also, the moments of inertia are calculated for this purpose for the chain of fissile thorium nuclei at the scission point. All of these parameters are determined at the scission point by means of three-dimensional dynamical calculations based on Langevin equations. A strong alignment of fragment spins is assumed in analyzing the anisotropy in question. In that case, the energy dependence of the anisotropy of fission fragments is faithfully reproduced at energies in excess of the Coulomb barrier (E c.m. ? E B ≥ 30 MeV). It is assumed that, as the excitation energy and the angular momentum of a fissile nucleus are increased, the region where the angular distributions of fragments are formed is gradually shifted from the region of nuclear deformations in the vicinity of the saddle point to the region of nuclear deformations in the vicinity of the scission point, the total angular momentum of the nucleus undergoing fission being split into the orbital component, which is responsible for the anisotropy of fragments, and the spin component. This conclusion can be qualitatively explained on the basis of linear-response theory.  相似文献

T-odd asymmetries in angular distributions of evaporation γ-rays emitted by thermalized fragments resulting from the fission of axially symmetric deformed nuclei induced by cold polarized neutrons are investigated within the quantum theory of fission. The asymmetries in question are due to the anisotropy of the angular distributions of evaporation γ-rays, caused by zero wriggling vibrations of the fissioning nucleus and associated with the orientation of large fission fragment spins in the direction perpendicular to the direction n 0 of the symmetry axis of the fissioning nucleus at the time of its separation into fragments. The angle of rotation of the vector n 0 with respect to the asymptotic direction of the light fission fragment emission is calculated with allowance for the interference of fission amplitudes of neutron resonances excited in the fissioning nucleus as it captures the incident neutron. It is shown that the angular and energy characteristics of the T-odd asymmetry calculated for evaporation γ-rays agree with the characteristics of the experimentally investigated T-odd asymmetry in angular distributions of all γ-rays emitted by a fissioning 236U nucleus.  相似文献

We have measured fragment kinetic energies in electron induced fission of 232Th for electron energies in the range 7 MeV ≦ Ee ≦ 66 MeV. The relative contribution of the distribution peak associated with high fragment kinetic energies decreases continuously with electron energy. This is interpreted as a relative increase of the symmetric fission yield as compared to the asymmetric fission yield; this fact in turn indicates a non-negligible increase in the average excitation of the fissioning nucleus, with the energy of the bombarding electrons, even above the giant dipole resonance.  相似文献

Inclusive4He and4H energy spectra and heavy fragment coincidence correlations have been measured for reactions of 7.31 MeV/u238U with238U and?197Au targets. The H/He production cross sections are in the range 15–26 mb, and their emission spectra are very similar for the two systems. The observed strong kinematic shifts with angle are reproduced in shape and magnitude by Monte Carlo simulations of particle evaporation from projectile-like and target-like fragments, indicating competition between charged particle emission and sequential fission. No evidence is found for high energy charged particle emission associated with ultra-highZ composite systems. Heavy fragment measurements indicate an abundance of quasielastic and deeply inelastic reaction fragments, as well as sequential fission of target and projectile nuclei. For238U nuclei, the fission occurs predominantly in an asymmetric mode, reminiscent of fission at low excitation energy. For238+238U reactions in the vicinity of the grazing angle, the frequency of single sequential fission (with survival of the partner fragment) is twice as large as double sequential fission in which both the target and projectile undergo fission. In238U+197Au reactions, the survival probability of the heavy fragments is even greater. The surprisingly high survival probabilities of high-Z fragments imply a preponderance of very soft collisions in these very-heavy-ion reactions, at least at energies not very far over the Coulomb barrier.  相似文献
