We have studied the electro-optical characteristics of a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) with weak planar anchoring of the director at the bounding substrates. By using the in-plane switching (IPS) of the LC which is achieved by an in-plane electric field, the driving voltage was confirmed to be far less than that of the conventional IPS mode in which both substrates possess strong anchoring characteristics. Moreover, because of the absence of strong subsurface director deformations, the cell could operate optically in the Mauguin regime. Using these features we propose a new type of LC switching mode - in-plane sliding (IPSL) mode. We have realized this mode in a LC cell comprising one reference substrate with strong director anchoring and one substrate covered with photoaligning material with weak anchoring. In order to clarify the switching process, we derived a simplified expression for the threshold voltage on the assumption of uniformity of the in-plane electric field. For the dynamical response of the LC to the in-plane electric field, the switching on and off relaxation times of the IPSL mode were found to be longer than for the traditional IPS mode. However, we have proposed an optimized cell geometry for the IPSL mode with a response time comparable to that of the IPS mode.  相似文献

In-plane switching (IPS) of liquid crystals showed advantageous voltage-holding ratio (VHR) characteristics so that liquid crystals with low resistivity could provide higher VHRs compared with the twisted nematic effect. This experimental result was obtained when electric fields were applied approximately parallel to the substrate plane using the IPS electro-optical effect. We found that the in-plane electric field generates supplementary capacities which support retention of an externally applied voltage over the liquid crystal layer during non-selected periods of the active matrix driving scheme, because the liquid crystal layer can be connected with an insulating layer, an orientation layer and even a substrate in parallel. Based on these advantageous VHR characteristics, liquid crystal materials suitable for the IPS effect were appropriately optimized. We propose evaluation parameters, derived from the physical switching principles of the liquid crystals, to obtain lower driving voltage and faster response speeds. These parameters are effective in optimizing the physical properties of liquid crystals without variation of the cell gap. We use the proposed evaluation parameters and the advantageous VHR characteristics to demonstrate the optimization approach and we suggest a novel possible use of liquid crystal materials with low resistivity which cannot be implemented conventionally. Finally, we prove that liquid crystals with low resistivity generate the Ir internal potential by the drift of ionic species.  相似文献

Viewing angle characteristics were systematically obtained when using in-plane switching (IPS) of liquid crystals. Although the IPS mode originally shows stable electro-optical performance regardless of viewing directions, the viewing angle characteristics are found to be strongly dependent on pretilt angle (slant angle of the liquid crystals from the substrate). Experimentally, the smaller the pretilt angle of the liquid crystal, the much wider the viewing angle characteristics, while larger pretilt angles of liquid crystals cause the characteristics to deteriorate. This deterioration occurs in a particular viewing direction, i.e. at right angles to the initial orientation direction of the liquid crystal when there is no in-plane electric field. The experimentally observed behaviour of the viewing angle dependence on the pretilt angle was also confirmed by computer simulations. Calculated iso-contrast contour lines, as a function of the pretilt angles, nearly coincide with the experimentally obtained viewing angle characteristics of the contrast ratio.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

High sensitivity of liquid crystals to the electric field makes them highly demanded and widely used in different applications. Despite the large number of the electro-optical research on the low-molar-mass liquid crystals electro-optics of the liquid crystalline (LC) polymers is much less studied. Herein, the comparative electro-optical behaviour of two nematic comb-shaped polyacrylates with phenylbenzoate mesogenic side groups was studied in detail. These two polyacrylates have completely the same structure of polymer backbone and spacer length but different in the direction of the ester group in the phenylbenzoate fragments. It was found that this difference predetermines their completely opposite electro-optical properties.

The influence of the electric field of different strength and frequency on the orientation of the mesogenic groups of these polymers is studied. It is shown that application of the electric field at temperatures above the glass transition temperature (~25°C) induces reorientation of the mesogenic groups along or perpendicular to the electric field direction depending in its turn on the ester group direction. For one of the polyacrylates an unusual textural transition is found; during cooling of the polymer sample under applied field at definite temperature a sharp change in the mesogen’s orientation from homeotropic to planar one is found. This electro-optical phenomenon is observed for the first time and probably associated with sharp change in sign of anisotropy of dielectric permittivity from positive (at high temperatures) to negative one (at lower temperatures). Kinetics of the electro-optical switching at different temperatures, influence of the molar masses of the polymer and frequency of the applied AC field on electro-optical behaviour of the polymers are studied. The possibility of the fixation of the electroinduced homeotropic alignment of the mesogenic groups by photopolymerisation of the diacrylate dissolved in the polymer is demonstrated.  相似文献

A novel optical guided mode technique, the fully-leaky guided mode technique, has been used to investigate the director distortion under the application of an in-plane electric field of a homogeneously aligned conventional cell filled with the nematic liquid crystal E7. The liquid crystal is aligned using polyimide rubbed along the direction of the gold electrode edges. A weak field is applied across a 3 mm gap between the gold electrodes to induce small changes in the twist angle of the director. These distortions are determined by fitting to the angledependent reflectivity and transmissivity data and are compared with continuum theory. From careful analysis of the results, both the twist elastic constant, k22, and the azimuthal anchoring strength, Wa, of the system are obtained. At 23.5 C for E7 on rubbed polyimide we find that k22=(6.50 +/- 0.05)x10-12N and Wa=(2.9 +/- 0.2)x10-5 J m-2.  相似文献

We propose a homogeneously aligned liquid crystal (LC) cell with double-side protrusion electrodes for fast response and low-voltage operation. In the proposed device, both the bottom and top substrates have pixel electrodes to generate the fringe electric field. Because the penetration depth of the electric field is increased owing to the protrusion electrodes, the operating voltage is very low and the turn-on time is dramatically reduced compared with the conventional in-plane switching (IPS) mode. Moreover, LC molecules anchored strongly to the penetrated protrusion electrodes on both substrates exert a strong restoring force, resulting in a fast turn-off time. We found that the total response time of the LC cell with the proposed structure is three times faster than that of the conventional IPS mode.  相似文献

Structures with a periodic in-plane liquid crystal director field modulation induced by an electric field are studied in cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs). A phenomenon of the electric-field-induced instability in a planarly aligned cholesteric cell is used to create these undulated structures. The initial field-off state is planarly aligned with the cholesteric helix axis oriented perpendicular to the cell substrates. The interaction of the CLC with an electric field results in modulation of the refractive index, which is visualised as stripe domains oriented either along or perpendicular to the rubbing direction at cell alignment surfaces. The threshold electric field for the undulation appearance and a period of stripes are measured experimentally for three Grandjean zones (ratio d/p ~ 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5, where d is a cell thickness and p is the natural cholesteric pitch). For the zone with d/p ~ 1.0 using numerical simulations, we describe in detail the director distribution at an applied electric field. It is found that the in-plane undulated structure is characterised by a conical director rotation on moving along the alignment direction. The conical axis is tilted with respect to the alignment axis. The sign of the tilt angle depends on the handedness of CLC.  相似文献

Biaxiality in the nematic phase for a liquid crystalline tetrapode made up of organo-siloxanes mesogens is investigated using polarized infrared spectroscopy. An ordering of the minor director for the homeotropically aligned sample is found to depend on the amplitude of the in-plane electric field. On increasing the in-plane electric field, the minor director, lying initially along the rubbing direction, rotates to the direction of the applied field. The scalar order parameters of the second rank tensor are found to depend significantly on the strength of the electric field. A most significant increase is found in the nematic order parameter and in the parameter that characterizes the phase biaxiality.  相似文献

We have studied cell gap-dependent driving voltage characteristics in a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) cell driven by a fringe electric field, termed the fringe field switching (FFS) mode. The results show that for the FFS mode using a LC with positive dielectric anisotropy, the operating voltage decreases as the cell gap decreases, whereas it increases with a decreasing cell gap when using a LC with negative dielectric anisotropy. The difference between LCs is explained by simulation and experiment.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of the polarisation direction and incident angle of a UV light on the electrooptical properties of the polymer-stabilised vertically aligned in-plane switching (PS-VAIPS) liquid crystal. The PS-VAIPS sample cured with a UV light whose polarisation was parallel to the projected direction of the in-plane electric field showed greater transmittance, faster rising time and slower falling time than the sample cured with a UV light with a perpendicular polarisation to the electric field. In addition, the PS-VAIPS sample showed slower rising time and faster falling time with increasing incident angle of the UV light.  相似文献

The in-plane switching (IPS) mode in liquid crystal displays is known to exhibit a wide viewing angle. However, since the LC director rotates in one direction in the plane, devices with a single domain exhibit both a colour shift depending on the viewing angle, and greyscale inversion at specific angles especially at low grey levels. This has been improved by wedge shaped electrodes so that fields in two directions exist inside a pixel, causing the LC molecules to rotate in opposite directions to compensate each other; this acts as a virtual two domains structure. Nevertheless, the colour shift still exists to some extent, especially at low grey levels. In this paper, we propose a realistic two-domain IPS mode that exhibits a minimized colour shift at all grey levels on changing the viewing direction. In this device, the LC molecules are initially aligned in two directions orthogonal to each other, and two field directions exist perpendicular to each other. We have performed device simulations with respect to viewing angle characteristics, and found that IPS devices with a real two-domain structure reduce the variation of the retardation more effectively, when the viewing direction changes.  相似文献

Liquid-crystalline (LC) physical gels are a new class of dynamically functional materials consisting of liquid crystals and fibrous aggregates of molecules that are called "gelators". Liquid-crystalline physical gels, which are macroscopically soft solids, exhibit induced or enhanced electro-optical, photochemical, electronic properties due to the combination of two components that form phase-separated structures. In this tutorial review, we describe the materials design and structure-property relationships of the LC physical gels. The introduction of self-assembled fibers into nematic liquid crystals leads to faster responses in twisted nematic (TN) mode and high contrast switching in light scattering mode. Furthermore, the LC physical gels can be exploited as a new type of materials for electro-optical memory. This function is achieved by the control of reversible aggregation processes of gelators under electric fields in nematic liquid crystals. Electronic properties such as hole mobilities are improved by the introduction of fibrous aggregates into triphenylene-based columnar liquid crystals. The incorporation of photochromic azobenzenes or electroactive tetrathiafulvalenes into the chemical structures of gelators leads to the preparation of ordered functional materials.  相似文献

We demonstrate a liquid crystal (LC) mode switched by mixed electric fields of in-plane and fringe fields, which are self-adjusted by adopting a bottom floating electrode for enhanced electro-optical properties. In our LC mode structure, conventional in-plane switching (IPS) electrodes are formed as pixel electrodes and common electrodes on an insulating layer and floating electrodes that are patterned per the sub-pixels. When the areas of the pixel and common electrodes are identical, the voltage of the bottom floating electrode is spontaneously determined to be half the value of the pixel voltage, which ideally generates symmetric fringe fields with both pixel and common electrodes. Due to the in-plane fields additionally generated between the pixel and common electrodes, the proposed LC structure operates by mixed-field switching (MFS), which shows higher transmittance than fringe-field switching (FFS) and IPS LC modes. Transmittance of the conventional FFS and IPS LC modes is highly sensitive to the in-plane electrode’s width (w) and spacing (l) condition, but the proposed MFS LC mode shows good transmittance without degradation with large variations of the in-plane electrode’s spacing-to-width ratio (l/w).  相似文献

We have investigated the morphology and electro-optical properties of reverse mode polymer dispersed liquid crystals as a function of liquid crystal loading. Reverse mode shutters have been obtained by a polymerization-induced phase separation of mixtures, consisting of a liquid crystalline monomer and a non-reactive nematic liquid crystal, placed between rough conductive surfaces. Such surfaces are able to keep the photopolymerizable mixtures homeotropically aligned without the use of any aligning polymer substrate. OFF state transmittances are always larger than 80% and the switching fields decrease if the non-reactive liquid crystal percentage is increased. Both rise and decay times are always lower than 10 ms. The electro-optical properties have been related to the sample morphology and a simple mode is proposed.  相似文献

We have explored the change in alignment of a nematic liquid crystal, 4'-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) with three types of photosensitive polyimide as the alignment layer by photoirradiation at 366 nm. The photosensitive polyimide alignment layer induced a reversible change in alignment of 5CB. It was observed that the 5CB molecules became aligned from homogeneous alignment to homeotropic on photoirradiation with a d.c. electric field as a bias, and reversed to the homogeneous state when photoirradiation was ceased. This result indicates that optical switching could be repeated by on and off switching of the excitation light at 366 nm. The optical switching of the nematic liquid crystal might be mainly due to a photophysical change in the polyimide surface which is affected by the chemical structures of the polyimides at the temperature at which 5CB exhibits a nematic phase. The optical switching of nematic liquid crystals with photosensitive polyimides as the alignment layer is a novel driving method for nematic liquid crystals.  相似文献

The optical and electro-optical properties of filled nematic liquid crystals, nematic systems with added colloidal silica nanoparticles ( ≤6%), have been studied. The macroscopic near IR birefringence of cells constructed from these materials was measured for wavelengths between 2 and 5 mum, and a wavelength independent value of 0.16 was obtained. The visible optical behaviour of cells formed with untreated ITO substrates using both filled nematic, and filled nematic and dichroic dyes was similar to those observed in polymer dispersed liquid crystals. At an electric field of 1-2 V μm -1 , the cells were highly transmitting, while at low fields they were highly scattering. The effects of colloidal silica nanoparticle concentration, cell thickness, electric field and substrate preparation (rubbed polyimide versus no surface treatment) on the electro-optical behaviour of these cells were studied.  相似文献

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films operating in reverse mode are transparent electro-optical devices, which can be turned into an opaque state by application of a suitable electric field. The effect was investigated of different UV powers, used during the polymerization process, on the electro-optical and morphology properties of PDLCs, working in reverse mode operation. Films were obtained by UV polymerization of mixtures of a low molecular weight nematic liquid crystal and a photopolymerizable liquid crystal monomer, homeotropically aligned by rough conductive surfaces. The electro-optical and morphology properties of samples were related to the polymerization conditions. Samples polymerized by lower UV powers exhibited “polymer ball” morphology and an electro-optical response due to the liquid crystal director reorientation, whereas samples obtained at higher UV powers showed a “Swiss cheese” morphology and an electro-optical response due to dynamic scattering. In addition, we observed by conductivity and IR measurements that UV exposure induces a degradation of the nematic liquid crystal.  相似文献
