Under the assumption that the boundary layer approximation for the original equations is valid, we show the possibility of the existence of progressive waves on the surface of a vertically flowing film when surface tension is neglected. From the system of equations obtained for a thin layer of viscous liquid flowing down an inclined plane, one equation for perturbations of a thin film follows. Steady solutions of this equation allow periodic discontinuous solutions of the roll-wave type.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Teknicheskoi Fiziki, No. 2, pp. 109–113-March–April, 1973.  相似文献

Planar solidification of a warm flowing liquid with the convective heat transfer to the growing solid layer, has been analysed for the boundary conditions of constant temperature, constant heat flux and convective heat flux at the surface respectively. The mathematical formulation of the problem resulted in a coupled set of two differential equations in temperature and solid thickness as function of position, time and the problem parameters. Analytical expressions for the temperature distribution within the growing solid layer, the rate of solidification and the solidification time are obtained. The perturbation techniques employed here is simple and straight forward in contrast with the earlier techniques. Good agreement between the experimental results and the present solutions is obtained for the convective heat flux boundary condition. The results of this analysis are useful in the design and analysis of experiments dealing with freezing/melting in one dimension. The role of the parameter Stefan number which is small for phase change materials, is discussed in context with the storage of thermal energy.  相似文献

Multiphase flow with impinging droplets on an icing surface with a flowing supercooled surface layer is investigated. The air-assisted flowing layer is modelled with the cross-phase shear stresses imparted at the moving liquid/air interface. Runback and runoff of the surface layer are predicted by mass flow across the boundaries between adjacent elements in the numerical formulation. This liquid runoff is determined by coupled heat and momentum balances for the unfrozen water layer. The numerical analysis is developed with a control-volume-based finite element method (CVFEM). An Eulerian formulation with volume averaging is developed to accommodate the near-wall elements containing both dispersed and continuous phases. The predicted results are successfully validated through comparisons with analytical solutions and measured data.  相似文献

We study the solidification and flow of a binary alloy over a horizontally moving substrate. A situation in which the solid, liquid and mushy regions are separated by the stationary two-dimensional interfaces is considered. The self-similar solutions of the governing boundary layer equations are obtained, and their parametric dependence is analysed asymptotically. The effect of the boundary layer flow on the physical characteristics is determined. It is found that the horizontal pulling and the resulting flow in the liquid enhance the formation of the mushy region.  相似文献

A method based on energy minimisation is used to determine the spacing and penetration of a regular array of cracks in a layer of material whose thickness is increasing as it solidifies from a liquid. After solidification, the slab shrinks and subsequently cracks due to internal stresses. A simple Stefan solidification model is used to determine the thickness of the slab as time progresses as well as the temperature profile in the slab. The key feature of the results is that a minimum crack spacing occurs early in the solidification process and this minimum defines a basic spacing for the crack array. The minimum spacing occurs for a range of constraints (boundary conditions) and thermal profiles in the material, indicating the robustness of the phenomenon. Cracks propagating with the unique minimum spacing are subject to a period doubling instability that acts to coarsen the crack pattern, which brings the crack spacing close to the minimum energy state for later time. Good numerical comparison between the crack spacings predicted by energy minimisation and those observed in basalt columns is demonstrated.  相似文献

The steady mixed convection boundary layer flow of a viscoelastic fluid over a horizontal circular cylinder in a stream flowing vertically upwards is numerically studied for both cases of heated and cooled cylinders. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into dimensionless forms using an appropriate transformation and then solved numerically using the Keller-box method. The comparison between the solutions obtained and those for a Newtonian fluid is found to be very good. Effects of the mixed convection and elasticity parameters on the skin friction and heat transfer coefficients for a fluid having the Prandtl number equal to one are also discussed. It is found that for some values of the viscoelastic parameter and some negative values of the mixed convection parameter (opposing flow) the boundary layer separates from the cylinder. Heating the cylinder delays separation and can, if the cylinder is warm enough, suppress the separation completely. Similar to the case of a Newtonian fluid, cooling the cylinder brings the separation point nearer to the lower stagnation point. However, for a sufficiently cold cylinder there will not be a boundary layer.  相似文献

In this paper the study of visco-elastic (Walters' liquid B model) flow past a stretching plate with suction is considered. Exact solutions of the boundary layer equations of motion and energy are obtained. The expressions for the coefficient of skin friction and of boundary layer thickness are obtained.  相似文献

The paper presents an analytical study of a laminar decelerating liquid film falling along a vertical plate. Approximate solutions are obtained for the boundary layer within the film, film thickness, entrance length, and minimum wetting rate. It is shown that the analysis may be extended also to a film flowing over a horizontal cylinder. The theory is in reasonable agreement with the parametric trends observed in experiments on horizontal cylinders.  相似文献

We consider a laminar boundary layer for which the stagnation enthalpy specified in the initial section is variable with height. Such problems arise, for example, for bodies located in the wake behind another body, for hypersonic flow past slender blunted bodies (as a result of the large transverse entropy gradients in the highentropy layer), for stepwise variation of the temperature of a surface on which there is an already developed boundary layer, for sudden expansion of the boundary layer as a result of its flow past a corner of the surface, etc.Strictly, we should in such cases solve the boundary layer equations (if the longitudinal gradients are much smaller than the transverse) with the specified initial distribution of the quantities. However, from the physical point of view, the distributed region may be broken down into two regions, the near-wall boundary layer and an outer region which is a gas flow with constant velocity and the specified initial temperature profile, whose calculation yields the edge conditions for the boundary layer. The boundary between the regions is determined from the condition of adequately smooth matching of the solutions. This approach is much preferable to the first, since it permits avoiding (within the framework of boundary layer theory) the difficulties associated with the presence of a possible singularity at the initial point of the surface due to the discontinuity of the boundary conditions at this point, and also permits using conventional boundary layer theory if the effect of the viscosity in the outer region is not significant. However, this partition requires additional justifications of the possibility of independent determination of the solution in the outer region and the determination of the edge of the boundary layer, considered as the region of influence of the wetted surface. The boundary layer in a nonuniform flow has been considered in several works for a linear initial velocity or temperature profile [1–3].It should be noted that the linear initial enthalpy or velocity profiles for constant gas properties do not undergo changes under the influence of viscosity or thermal conductivity. Thus the fundamental characteristic features noted above which are associated with the presence of the two regions and their interaction in essence cannot be investigated using these examples. In this study we obtain and analyze the exact solutions of the equations of the compressible boundary layer for a power-law variation of the initial stagnation enthalpy profile as a function of the stream function for a constant initial velocity. Here it is shown that the influence of the boundary conditions at the wall are actually localized in the near-wall boundary layer, which is similar in dimensions to the conventional velocity or thermal boundary layers. In the region which is external with relation to this layer, in accordance with the physical picture described above, the solution coincides with the solution of the Cauchy problem for the heat conduction equation, which describes the development of the initial temperature profile in an infinite steady-state flow with constant velocity. It is shown that for the sufficiently smooth initial profiles which are of interest in practice the outer flow undergoes practically no changes until we reach the inner boundary layer, and it may be calculated using the perfect gas laws.  相似文献

On the basis of a simplified system of equations we study the process of development and stability of wave flows in a thin layer of a viscous liquid. Any unstable disturbance of the laminar flow grows and leads to the establishment of the wave regime. The time to establish the flow changes little for large flow rates, but increases sharply with reduction of the flow rate. Given the same amplitudes of the initial disturbances, the optimum regimes which provide the greatest flow rate in a layer of given average thickness develop more rapidly than the other regimes. All the wave regimes are unstable to disturbances in the form of traveling waves. With moderate flow rates, the optimum regimes will be most stable to near-by disturbances.Strictly periodic wave flows in a thin layer of a viscous liquid under the influence of the gravity force were calculated in [1], Various flow wave regimes which differ in wavelength can theoretically be established for a given liquid flow rate. In particular, there is a wavelength for which the flowing layer exhibits minimum average thickness (and maximum flow rate for a given average thickness). These optimum regimes correspond closely to the experimental data [2]; however, with regard to calculation technique these regimes are no different from the others. In the following we make a comparison of the wave regimes on the basis of the nature of their development and stability.  相似文献

Evolution of convective structures in a thin layer of an evaporating liquid (ethanol) located under a turbulent boundary layer of an airflow is studied experimentally and theoretically. Evolution of the structures is examined under conditions of an increased flow velocity. A transition is found from convective cells formed in the absence of the flow to convective rolls elongated in the streamwise direction. The theoretical analysis is performed within a two-dimensional model of the flow in the liquid layer. The boundary conditions on the liquid surface are obtained with the use of self-similar solutions for mean fields in the airflow. The onset and evolution of a periodic system of rolls are simulated numerically. Theoretical conclusions are compared with experimental data. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 48, No. 4, pp. 3–14, July–August, 2007.  相似文献

A separation criterion, i.e., a definite relationship between the external flow and the boundary layer parameters [1], can be used to estimate the possibility of the origination of separation of a two-dimensional boundary layer. A functional form of the separation criterion has also been obtained for a three-dimensional boundary layer [2] on the basis of dimensional analysis. As in the case of the two-dimensional boundary layer, locally self-similar solutions can be used to determine the specific magnitude of the separation criterion as a function of the values of the governing parameters. Locally self-similar solutions of the two-dimensional laminar boundary-layer equations have been found at the separation point for a perfect gas with a linear dependence of the coefficient of viscosity on the temperature (Ω=1) and Prandtl number P=1 [3, 4]. The influence of blowing and suction has been studied for this case [5]. Self-similar solutions have been obtained for Ω=1, P=0.723 for the limit case of hypersonic perfect gas flow [6]. Locally self-similar solutions of the three-dimensional laminar boundary-layer equations at the separation point are presented in [7] for a perfect gas with Ω=1, P=1. There are no such computations for Ω≠1, P≠1; however, the results of computing several examples for a two-dimensional flow [8] show that the influence of the real properties of a gas can be significant and should be taken into account. Self-similar solutions of the two- and three-dimensional boundary-layer equations at the separation point are found in this paper for a perfect gas with a power-law dependence of the viscosity coefficient on the enthalpy (Ω=0.5, 0.75, 1.0) for different values of the Prandtl number (P=0.5, 0.7, 1.0) in a broad range of variation of the external stream velocity (v 1 2 /2h1* = 0–0.99) and the temperature of the streamlined surface. Magnitudes of the separation criterion for a laminar boundary layer have been obtained on the basis of these data.  相似文献

Heat transfer in the laminar boundary layer of a transparent gas flowing aroud a plane radiating surface is studied. Radiative heat-transfer processes in gases may be divided into two main groups. The first involves heat transfer in absorbing and radiating media. In this case, the effect of radiation lies in the introduction of new terms into the energy equation, representing internal heat sources and sinks. The second group embraces heat-transfer processes in a transparent gas when the effect of radiation on convection expresses itself solely by way of the boundary conditions. Here we study a case of practical importance belonging to the second group: heat transfer in the laminary boundary layer of a transparent gas flowing around a flat plate with the thermal flux qw specified on its surface.Novosibirsk. Consider the dynamics of a thin laminar liquid film flowing over an inclined wall in the presence of a co-flowing turbulent gas. The solution to the full two-phase flow problem poses substantial technical difficulties. However, by making appropriate assumptions, the solution process can be simplified and can provide valuable insights. The assumptions allow us to solve the gas and liquid problems independently. Solving for the gas flow reduces to finding perturbations to pressure and tangential stresses at the interface, influencing the liquid problem through the boundary conditions. We analyze the effect of gas flow on the liquid problem by developing an integral-boundary-layer model, which is valid up to moderate liquid Reynolds numbers. We seek solitary-wave solutions of this model under the influence of gas flow via a pseudo-arclength continuation method. Our computations demonstrate that as a general trend, the wave speed increases with increasing the gas shear and the liquid flow rate. Further insight into the problem is provided via time-dependent computations of the integral-boundary-layer model.  相似文献

The onset of convection in a system of two horizontal layers (a pure liquid and a porous medium saturated with the same liquid) heated from below under the action of vertical vibration is investigated. For describing the free thermal convection, in the liquid layer the Boussinesq approximation and in the porous layer the Darcy-Boussinesq approximation are used. In the limiting case of a thin liquid layer, effective boundary conditions on the upper boundary of the porous layer with account for convection in the liquid layer are obtained and it is shown that vibration has a stabilizing effect, whereas the presence of a liquid layer leads to destabilization. For an arbitrary liquid to porous layer thickness ratio the onset of convection is investigated numerically. In the case of a thin liquid layer there are two (short-and long-wave) unstable modes. In the case of thick layers the neutral curves are unimodal. Vibration has a stabilizing effect on perturbations with any wave number but affects short-wave perturbations much more strongly than long-wave ones.  相似文献

In dilatant fluids the shear perturbation propagation rate is finite, in contrast to Newtonian and pseudoplastic fluids in which it is infinite [1]. Therefore, in certain dilatant fluid flows, frontal surfaces separating regions with zero and nonzero shear perturbations may be formed. Since, in a sense, the boundary layer is a “time scan” of the nonstationary shear perturbation propagation process, in dilatant fluids the boundary layer should definitely be spatially localized. This was first mentioned in [2] where, however, it was mistakenly asserted that boundary layer spatial localization does not take place in all dilatant fluids and is absent in so-called “hardening” dilatant fluids. In [3], the solutions of the laminar boundary-layer equations for speudoplastic and “hardening” dilatant fluids were investigated qualitatively. The formation of frontal surfaces in dilatant fluid flows is usually mathematically related with the existence of singular solutions of the corresponding differential equations [4]. However, since the analysis performed in [3] was inaccurate, in that study singular solutions were not found and it was incorrectly concluded that in “hardening” dilatant fluids there is no spatial boundary layer localization. The investigation performed in [5] showed that in fact in “hardening” dilatant fluids boundary layers are spatially localized, since there exist singular solutions of the corresponding differential equations. Subsequently, this result was reproduced in [6], where an attempt was also made to carry out a qualitative investigation of the solutions of the laminar boundary-layer equations for other types of dilatant fluids. The author did not find singular solutions in this case and mistakenly concluded that in these fluids there is no spatial boundary layer localization. This misunderstanding was due to the fact that in [6] it was not understood that in dilatant fluid flows the formation of frontal surfaces can be mathematically described not only in relation to the existence of singular solutions.  相似文献

Self-similar solutions of the equations of a three-dimensional laminar boundary layer are of interest from two points of view. In the first place, they can be used to construct approximate calculating methods, making it possible to analyze several variants and to consider complex flows, in which it is impossible to neglect the interaction between the boundary layer and the external flow (for example, in the region of hypersonic interaction [1–3]). In the second place, the analysis of self-similar solutions permits clarifying the effect of individual parameters on one or another characteristic of the boundary layer and representing this effect in predictable form. One of the principal characteristics of a three-dimensional boundary layer, as also of a two-dimensional, is the coefficient of regeneration of the enthalpy. The value of this coefficient is needed for determining the temperature of a thermally insulated surface, as well as for finiing the real temperature (or enthalpy) head, which determines the value of the heat flux from a heated gas to the surface of the body around which the flow takes place. The article presents the results of calculations of the coefficient of regeneration of the enthalpy for locally self-similar solutions of the equations of a three-dimensional boundary layer, forming with flow around a cylindrical thermally insulated surface at an angle. It is clarified that the dependence of the coefficient of regeneration of the enthalpy on the determining parameters is not always continuous.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 60–63, January–February, 1973.  相似文献

The instability and regular nonlinear waves in the film of a heavy viscous liquid flowing along the wall of a round tube and interacting with a gas flow are investigated. The solutions for the wave film flows are numerically obtained in the regimes from free flow-down in a counter-current gas stream to cocurrent upward flow of the film and the gas at fairly large gas velocities. Continuous transition from the counter-current to the cocurrent flow via the state with a maximum amplitude of nonlinear waves and zero values of the liquid flow rate and the phase velocity is investigated. The Kapitsa-Shkadov method is used to reduce a boundary value problem to a system of evolutionary equations for the local values of the layer thickness and the liquid flow rate.  相似文献

The solidification of binary mixture (NH4Cl–H2O) inside a trapezoidal cavity is investigated experimentally in this study. The effect of the initial concentration of ammonium chloride (0–19.8%) and boundary temperatures (−30 to 0°C) on the solidification process was investigated. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used for the visualization of the dynamic field in the melt. Thirty-two thermocouples were used to monitor the temperature distribution inside the cavity and on the cooling walls. The convective flow field, the temperature distribution, the frozen layer thickness and the moving solid/liquid interface were obtained for different initial concentrations of ammonium chloride and various boundary temperatures. The results obtained in the course of this study reveal that: (1) the process of solidification is slower with an increase in initial concentration levels of the binary solution: as the concentration increases, the time needed to get the same thickness of frozen layer increases; (2) an increase in the initial concentration of ammonium chloride solution reduce significantly the temperature in the melt; and (3) the initial concentration play a significant role in the evolution of convection flow patterns.  相似文献
