Binary melt‐blended mixtures of two aryl ether ketone polymers (i.e., a new poly(aryl ether ketone) (code name PK99) and poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), have been studied. Polymer miscibility in glassy amorphous (or melt) domains has been demonstrated for the binary blend comprising of two aryl‐ether‐ketone‐type semicrystalline polymers. Composition‐dependent, single Tg was observed within full composition range in the PK99/PEEK blends, and the narrow Tg breadth also suggests that the scale of mixing was fine and uniform. To better resolve any possible overlapping Tg's, physical aging was imposed on a comparison set of blend samples for the purpose of improving detectability of overlapped multiple transitions if existing. The result still showed one single Tg. The relative sharp Tg and lack of cloud point transition suggest that the scale of molecular intermixing is good. Phase homogeneity was further confirmed using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The X‐ray diffractograms suggest that isomorphism does not exist in the PK99/PEEK blends and that the crystal forms of the respective polymers remain distinct and unchanged by the miscibility in the amorphous region. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The supercritical CO2 (sc‐CO2) provided a moderate condition to make the amorphous CO2/poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) mixtures at 30 MPa and 40 °C. The crystal is obtained directly after treating CO2/PEEK mixture from 70 to 240 °C. The crystallization behavior of CO2/PEEK mixtures before and after treatment is investigated in detail by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. DSC curves of CO2/PEEK samples showed the double cold crystallization peaks. The lower cold crystallization peak moves to higher temperature with the content of CO2 decreasing, and the higher cold crystallization peak keeps their temperatures at about 172 °C without a remarkable change. The dynamic mechanical spectrometry was also introduced to explain the relaxation behavior of the glass transition and crystallization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rhythmic growth of ring‐banded spherulites in blends of liquid crystalline methoxy‐poly(aryl ether ketone) (M‐PAEK) and poly(aryl ether ether ketone) (PEEK) has been investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The measurements reveal that the formation of the rhythmically grown ring‐banded spherulites in the M‐PAEK/PEEK blends is strongly dependent on the blend composition. In the M‐PAEK‐rich blends, upon cooling, an unusual ring‐banded spherulite is formed, which is ascribed to structural discontinuity caused by a rhythmic radial growth. For the 50:50 M‐PAEK/PEEK blend, ring‐banded spherulites and individual PEEK spherulites coexist in the system. In the blends with PEEK as the predominant component, M‐PAEK is rejected into the boundary of PEEK spherulites. The cooling rate and crystallization temperature have great effect on the phase behavior, especially the ring‐banded spherulite formation in the blends. In addition, the effects of M‐PAEK phase transition rate and phase separation rate on banded spherulite formation is discussed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel poly(arylene ether ketone)s were synthesized from the reaction of hydroquinone and 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-phthalazin-1-one with 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone in N-cyclohexylpyrrolidinone containing anhydrous potassium carbonate. The polymers exhibited high glass transition temperatures together with excellent thermooxidative stability. The chain structure of these polymers was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction techniques (WAXD), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). The experimental results indicated that these “as-made” copoly(aryleneketone)s containing hydroquinone moieties exhibited a block chain structure with segments which mainly consisted of hydroquinone and 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone. These chain segments resulted in crystallites in the polymers although they are thermodynamically unstable. The polymers showed thermal properties comparable to commercial PEEK, but the conditions for synthesis are much milder. The glass transition temperatures and solubilities of the copoly(arylene ketone)s tended to increase with increasing phthalazinone moiety content, while the crystallite melting points and crystallinity appeared to decrease. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A new monomer, N,N′‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)‐p‐phenylenediamine (BPBPPD), was prepared by the condensation of p‐phenylenediamine with 4‐phenoxybenzoyl chloride in N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc). Novel aromatic poly(ether amide amide ether ketone ketone)s (PEAAEKKs) were synthesized by electrophilic Friedel–Crafts solution copolycondensation of BPBPPD with a mixture of terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) and isophthaloyl chloride (IPC), over a wide range of TPC/IPC molar ratios, in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride and N‐methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in 1,2‐dichloroethane (DCE). The influences of reaction conditions on the preparation of polymers were examined. The polymers obtained were characterized by different physico–chemical techniques such as FT‐IR, Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The polymers with 70–100 mol% IPC are semicrystalline and have remarkably increased Tgs over commercially available poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) due to the incorporation of amide groups in the main chain. The polymers with 70–80 mol% IPC had not only high Tgs of 209–213°C, but also moderate Tms of 339–348°C, which are suitable for melt processing. The polymers with 70–80 mol% IPC had tensile strengths of 107.5–109.8 MPa, Young's moduli of 2.53–2.69 GPa, and elongations at break of 9–11% and exhibited high thermal stability and good resistance to organic solvents. Dynamic rheological measurements were carried out on blends of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK)/poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PES) in the melt state in the oscillatory shear mode. The data were analyzed for the fundamental rheological behavior to yield insight into the microstructure of PEEK/PES blends. A variation of complex viscosity with composition exhibited positive–negative deviations from the log‐additivity rule and was typical for a continuous‐discrete type of morphology with weak interaction among droplets. The point of transition showed that phase inversion takes place at composition with a 0.6 weight fraction of PEEK, which agreed with the actual morphology of these blends observed by scanning electron microscopy. Activation energy for flow, for blend compositions followed additive behavior, which indicated that PEEK/PES blends may have had some compatibility in the melt. Variation of the elastic modulus (G′) with composition showed a trend similar to that observed for complex viscosity. A three‐zone model used for understanding the dynamic moduli behavior of polymers demonstrated that PEEK follows plateau‐zone behavior, whereas PES exhibits only terminal‐zone behavior in the frequency range studied. The blends of these two polymers showed an intermediate behavior, and the crossover frequency shifted to the low‐frequency region as the PEEK content in PES increased. This revealed the shift of terminal‐zone behavior to low frequency with an increased PEEK percentage in the blend. Variation of relaxation time with composition suggested that slow relaxation of PEEK retards the relaxation process of PES as the PEEK concentration in the blend is increased because of the partial miscibility of the blend, which affects the constraint release process of pure components in the blend. A temperature‐independent correlation observed in the log–log plots of G′ versus loss modulus (G″) for different blend systems fulfilled the necessary condition for their rheological simplicity. Further, the composition‐dependent correlations of PEEK/PES blends observed in a log–log plot of G′ versus G″ showed that the blends are either partially miscible or immiscible and form a discrete‐continuous phase morphology. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structure of expanded poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (ePTFE) films that were produced by uniaxial or biaxial stretching of a calendared sheet were studied by wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), small angle X‐ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy. The molecular orientation of the stretched films was analyzed by WAXD flat films and pole figures. Biaxial orientation factors were computed to interpret the level of orientation quantitatively. DSC scans showed that oriented samples exhibited two melting peaks, one at the commonly observed temperature in the range 340–345 °C and one around 380 °C. The possible causes of this high‐temperature melting peak and its relation to previously described processes is discussed. The microporous nature of the ePTFE films is also briefly discussed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2010  相似文献

Two series of renewable nipagin and eugenol‐based copoly(ether ester)s, PDN11?xE1x and PDN11?xE2x (x = 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%), were prepared in the melt with 1,10‐decanediol as a comonomer. The synthesized poly(ether ester)s have weight‐average molecular weights (Mw) in the range of 20,400–37,200 g mol?1, and dispersity (D) values between 1.7 and 1.9. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) reveal that all the poly(ether ester)s exhibit a two‐step degradation mechanism with an initial degradation temperature above 350 °C. Results from differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WXRD) analyses demonstrate that the poly(ether ester)s are all semicrystalline materials with glass transition temperature (Tg) values ranging between ?21.3 and ?8.3 °C. The insertions of phenoxy‐ether linkage and eugenol‐derived composition have significant influence on the Tg, crystallinity, Young's modulus, and tensile strength, as well as the toughening effect and degradability. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structure and morphology of a novel polyamide, nylon‐10,14, and its lamellar crystals from dilute solution were examined by transmission electron microscopy and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). Both the electron‐diffraction pattern and WAXD data demonstrated that nylon‐10,14 adopts the structure of a triclinic lattice similar to that of the traditional nylon‐66 but with a corresponding increase of the c parameter to 3.23 nm. In addition, the thermal behavior of melt‐crystallized nylon‐10,14 was investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass‐transition temperature of nylon‐10,14 determined by the DMA data was 46.6°C. DSC indicated that the multiple melting behavior of isothermally crystallized nylon‐10,14 probably results from the melt and recrystallization mechanism. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relationship between semicrystalline morphology and glass transition temperature has been investigated for solvent-crystallized poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK). Solvent-crystallized specimens of both PEEK and PEKK displayed a sizeable positive offset in Tg compared to quenched amorphous specimens as well as thermally crystallized specimens of comparable bulk crystallinity; the offset in Tg for the crystallized samples reflected the degree of constraint imposed on the amorphous segments by the crystallites. Small-angle X-ray scattering studies revealed markedly smaller crystal long periods (d) for the solvent-crystallized specimens compared to samples prepared by direct cold crystallization. The strong inverse correlation observed between Tg and interlamellar amorphous thickness (lA) based on a simple two-phase model was in excellent agreement with data reported previously for PEEK, and indicated the existence of a unique relationship between glass transition temperature and morphology in these poly(aryl ether ketones) over a wider range of sample preparation history and lamellar structure than was previously reported. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Ultrafine fibers of a laboratory‐synthesized new biodegradable poly(p‐dioxanone‐co‐L ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(ethylene glycol) copolymer were electrospun from solution and collected as a nonwoven mat. The structure and morphology of the electrospun membrane were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and a mercury porosimeter. Solutions of the copolymer, ranging in the lactide fraction from 60 to 80 mol % in copolymer composition, were readily electrospun at room temperature from solutions up to 20 wt % in methylene chloride. We demonstrate the ability to control the fiber diameter of the copolymer as a function of solution concentration with dimethylformamide as a cosolvent. DSC and WAXD results showed the relatively poor crystallinity of the electrospun copolymer fiber. Electrospun copolymer membrane was applied for the hydrolytic degradation in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.5) at 37 °C. Preliminary results of the hydrolytic degradation demonstrated the degradation rate of the electrospun membrane was slower than that of the corresponding copolymers of cast film. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A random copolymer (RCP) containing poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) and thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (TLCP) segments was synthesized. Its chemical structure and liquid crystalline properties were characterized by FT‐IR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polar light microscopy (PLM) respectively. A single glass transition temperature (Tg) at 134.0°C, a melting temperature (Tm) at 282.0°C and a temperature of ignition (Ti) at 331.3°C can be observed. Blends of PEEK and TLCP with and without RCP as compatibilizer were prepared by extrusion and the effect of RCP on the thermal properties, dynamic mechanical properties, morphology and static tensile mechanical properties of blends was investigated by means of DSC, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), etc. Dynamic mechanical measurements indicated that there appeared to be only a single tan δ peak resulting from the glass transition of the PEEK‐rich phase and the Tg value shifted towards higher temperature due to the presence of compatibilizer, as suggested partial compatibility. Morphological investigations showed that the addition of RCP to binary blends reduced the dispersed phase size and improved the interfacial adhesion between the two phases. The ternary compatibilized blends showed enhanced tensile modulus compared to their binary blends without RCP. The strain at break decreased for the ternary blends due to embrittlement of the matrix by the incorporation of some RCP to the matrix phase. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new monomer, 4,4′‐bis(4‐phenoxybenzoyl)diphenyl (BPOBDP), was prepared by Friedel–Crafts reaction of 4‐bromobenzoyl chloride and diphenyl, followed by condensation with potassium phenoxide. Novel poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK)/poly(ether ketone diphenyl ketone ether ketone ketone) (PEKDKEKK) copolymers were synthesized by electrophilic Friedel–Crafts solution copolycondensation of isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) with a mixture of diphenyl ether (DPE) and BPOBDP, in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride and N‐methyl‐pyrrolidone (NMP) in 1,2‐dichloroethane (DCE). The copolymers obtained were characterized by various analytical techniques such as FT‐IR, DSC, TGA, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The results showed that the resulting copolymers exhibited excellent thermal stability due to the existence of diphenyl moieties in the main chain. The glass transition temperatures are above 152°C, the melting temperatures are above 276°C, and the temperatures at a 5% weight loss are above 548°C in nitrogen. The copolymers with 50–70 mol% BPOBDP had tensile strengths of 101.5–102.7 MPa, Young's moduli of 3.23–3.41 GPa, and elongations at break of 12–17%. All these copolymers were semicrystalline and insoluble in organic solvents. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters containing phosphorus and aromatic ether groups (TLCP‐AEs) were synthesized from p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (p‐ABA), terephthalic acid (TPA), 4,4′‐oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBBA), and acetylated 2‐(6‐oxid‐6H‐dibenz(c,e) (1,2) oxaphosphorin 6‐yl) 1,4‐benzenediol (DOPO‐AHQ). The chemical structure and the properties of TLCP‐AEs were characterized by Fourier‐transform spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), limiting oxygen index, and UL‐94 tests, respectively. The results showed that TLCP‐AEs had low and broad mesophase temperatures (230–400 °C). TLCP‐AEs also showed excellent thermal stability; their 5%‐weight‐loss temperatures were above 440 °C and the char yields at 700 °C were higher than 45 wt %. All TLCP‐AE polyesters exhibited high flame retardancy with a LOI value of higher than 70 and UL‐94 V‐0 rating. The SEM observation revealed that TLCP‐AEs had good fibrillation ability. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 1182–1189, 2010  相似文献

trans‐1,4‐Cyclohexylene ring containing acid chloride monomers were incorporated into poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) backbones to study their effect on mechanical and thermal properties. The trans‐1,4‐cyclohexylene ring containing acid chloride monomers were synthesized and characterized by NMR and high‐resolution mass spectrum. trans‐1,4‐Cyclohexylene containing PAESs were synthesized from the acid chloride monomers and hydroxyl terminated polysulfone oligomers with a pseudo‐interfacial method and a solution method. These PAESs, with trans‐1,4‐cyclohexylene ring containing ester linkages, were fully characterized by NMR, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), size exclusion chromatography, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The tensile properties were also evaluated. The polymers made with the pseudo‐interfacial method had relatively low molecular weights when compared to the solution method where much higher molecular weight polymers were obtained. Crystallinity was promoted in the low molecular weight biphenol‐based PAES samples with the pseudo‐interfacial method. The crystallinity was confirmed by both the DSC and the wide angle X‐ray diffraction results. The tensile test results of the high molecular weight polymers suggested that incorporation of the trans‐1,4‐cyclohexylene ring containing linkage slightly improved the ultimate elongations while maintaining the Young's moduli. The trans‐1,4‐cyclohexylene ring containing PAESs also showed higher sub‐Tg relaxations in DMA when compared with their terephthaloyl containing analog. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The melting behavior of poly(L ‐lactic acid) film crystallized from the glassy state, either isothermally or nonisothermally, was studied by wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and temperature‐modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). Up to three crystallization and two melting peaks were observed. It was concluded that these effects could largely be accounted for on the basis of a “melt‐recrystallization” mechanism. When molecular weight is low, two melting endotherms are readily observed. But, without TMDSC, the double melting phenomena of high molecular weight PLLA is often masked by an exotherm just prior to the final melting, as metastable crystals undergo melt‐recrystallization during heating in the DSC. The appearance of a double cold‐crystallization peak during the DSC heating scan of amorphous PLLA film is the net effect of cold crystallization and melt‐recrystallization of metastable crystals formed during the initial cold crystallization. Samples cold‐crystallized at 80 and 90 °C did not exhibit a long period, although substantial crystallinity developed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new adamantane‐based bis(ether anhydride), 2,2‐bis[4‐(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]adamantane dianhydride, was prepared in three steps starting from nitrodisplacement of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile with the potassium phenolate of 2,2‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)adamantane. A series of adamantane‐containing poly(ether imide)s were prepared from the adamantane‐based bis(ether anhydride) and aromatic diamines by a conventional two‐stage synthesis in which the poly(ether amic acid)s obtained in the first stage were heated stage‐by‐stage at 150–270°C to give the poly(ether imide)s. The intermediate poly(ether amic acid)s had inherent viscosities between 0.56 and 1.92 dL/g. Except for those from p‐phenylenediamine, m‐phenylenediamine, and benzidine, all the poly(ether amic acid) films could be thermally converted into transparent, flexible, and tough poly(ether imide) films. All the poly(ether imide)s showed limited solubility in organic solvents, although they were amorphous in nature as evidenced by X‐ray diffractograms. Glass transition temperatures of these poly(ether imide)s were recorded in the range of 242–317°C by differential scanning calorimetry and of 270–322°C by dynamic mechanical analysis. They exhibited high resistance to thermal degrdation, with 10% weight loss temperatures being recorded between 514–538°C in nitrogen and 511–527°C in air. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Melt‐crystallized, low molecular weight poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) consisting of α crystals was uniaxially drawn by solid‐state extrusion at an extrusion temperature (Text) of 130–170 °C. A series of extrusion‐drawn samples were prepared at an optimum Text value of 170 °C, slightly below the melting temperature (Tm) of α crystals (~180 °C). The drawn products were characterized by deformation flow profiles, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) melting thermograms, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXD), and small‐angle X‐ray scattering as a function of the extrusion draw ratio (EDR). The deformation mode in the solid‐state extrusion of semicrystalline PLLA was more variable and complex than that in the extensional deformation expected in tensile drawing, which generally gave a mixture of α and β crystals. The deformation profile was extensional at a low EDR and transformed to a parabolic shear pattern at a higher EDR. At a given EDR, the central portion of an extrudate showed extensional deformation and the shear component became progressively more significant, moving from the center to the surface region. The WAXD intensities of the (0010)α and (003)β reflections on the meridian as well as the DSC melting thermograms showed that the crystal transformation from the initial α form to the oriented β form proceeded rapidly with increasing EDR at an EDR greater than 4. Furthermore, WAXD showed that the crystal transformation proceeded slightly more rapidly at the sheath region than at the core region. This fact, combined with the deformation profiles (shear at the sheath and extensional at the core), indicated that the crystal transformation was promoted by shear deformation under a high pressure rather than by extensional deformation. Thus, a highly oriented rod consisting of only β crystals was obtained by solid‐state extrusion of melt‐crystallized, low molecular weight PLLA slightly below Tm. The structure and properties of the α‐ and β‐form crystals were also studied. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 95–104, 2002  相似文献
