The minimum extinguishing concentration (MEC) of a fire suppression agent is usually determined by the standard cup-burner tests. Recently, a simple model based on extinction of Perfectly Stirred Reactors (PSR) was developed and validated in the prediction of the MECs for inert fire suppressants. The results show good agreement between the model predictions and the experimental data. Furthermore, the results confirmed that the MECs of inert agents are directly correlated to agent integrated heat capacities. In this paper, the model is extended to halogenated agents by adding detailed chemical kinetics of the halogenated agents to a detailed chemical mechanism of n-heptane. The consideration of reactive halogenated species as fire suppression agents increases the complexity in computing the stoichiometry, yet the use of the PSR approach simplifies interpretations relative to 1-d and 2-d simulations. Using this approach, the MEC of halogenated agents are computed and compared against experimental data. Two methods of computation were employed. In the first, “inert PSR” case, only the heptane reaction chemistry was included; so the agent acts solely as an inert and the solution provides a reference point for expected behavior if the agent acted as an inert. In the second, or “reactive PSR” case, agent-related chemistry was included. Good agreement is achieved for Halon 1301 (CF3Br) and R-32 (CH2F2). The computed “inert PSR” values agreed very well with the experimental MEC data for most fluorinated agents, suggesting that chemical inhibition by these fluorinated agents is counter-balanced by the exothermic HF formation and some competing chemical reactions; thus the “net” inhibition is small. In contrast, the “reactive PSR” results show good agreement with brominated agents and are consistent with the known strong catalytic effect of such compounds. The causes for differences between experiment and predicted values are explored and discussed while strengths and limitations are considered.  相似文献

We explore models with emergent gravity and metric by means of numerical simulations. A particular type of two-dimensional non-linear sigma-model is regularized and discretized on a quadratic lattice. It is characterized by lattice diffeomorphism invariance which ensures in the continuum limit the symmetry of general coordinate transformations. We observe a collective order parameter with properties of a metric, showing Minkowski or Euclidean signature. The correlation functions of the metric reveal an interesting long-distance behavior with power-like decay. This universal critical behavior occurs without tuning of parameters and thus constitutes an example of “self-tuned criticality” for this type of sigma-models. We also find a non-vanishing expectation value of a “zweibein” related to the “internal” degrees of freedom of the scalar field, again with long-range correlations. The metric is well described as a composite of the zweibein. A scalar condensate breaks Euclidean rotation symmetry.  相似文献

Brownian motion is the archetypal model for random transport processes in science and engineering. Brownian motion displays neither wild fluctuations (the “Noah effect”), nor long-range correlations (the “Joseph effect”). The quintessential model for processes displaying the Noah effect is Lévy motion, the quintessential model for processes displaying the Joseph effect is fractional Brownian motion, and the prototypical model for processes displaying both the Noah and Joseph effects is fractional Lévy motion. In this paper we review these four random-motion models–henceforth termed “fractional motions” –via a unified physical setting that is based on Langevin’s equation, the Einstein–Smoluchowski paradigm, and stochastic scaling limits. The unified setting explains the universal macroscopic emergence of fractional motions, and predicts–according to microscopic-level details–which of the four fractional motions will emerge on the macroscopic level. The statistical properties of fractional motions are classified and parametrized by two exponents—a “Noah exponent” governing their fluctuations, and a “Joseph exponent” governing their dispersions and correlations. This self-contained review provides a concise and cohesive introduction to fractional motions.  相似文献

The Lorenz curve is a universally calibrated statistical tool measuring quantitatively the distribution of wealth within human populations. We consider infinite random populations modeled by inhomogeneous Poisson processes defined on the positive half-line—the randomly scattered process-points representing the wealth of the population-members (or any other positive-valued measure of interest such as size, mass, energy, etc.). For these populations the notion of “macroscopic Lorenz curve” is defined and analyzed, and the notion of “Lorenzian fractality” is defined and characterized. We show that the only non-degenerate macroscopically observable Lorenz curves are power-laws manifesting Paretian statistics—thus providing a universal “Lorenzian explanation” to the ubiquitous appearance of Paretian probability laws in nature.  相似文献

We consider periodic and chaotic dynamics of discrete nonlinear maps in the presence of dynamical noise. We show that dynamical noise corrupting dynamics of a nonlinear map may be considered as a measurement “pseudonoise” with the distribution determined by the Jacobian of the map. The formula for the distribution of the measurement “pseudonoise” for one-dimensional quadratic maps has also been obtained in an explicit form. We expect that our results apply to an arbitrary distribution of low-level dynamical noise and hope that these results could help to find a universal method of discriminating dynamical from measurement noise.  相似文献

By means of virtual acoustics technologies the impulse response in a location of a real enclosure can be used to create a virtual room. Also in this virtual space, typically implemented in a dead room, an impulse response can be measured. From both “real” and respective “virtual” impulse response a group of room-acoustical parameters can be calculated. The match of the two groups of indicators mostly depends on the layout of the playback system and on the implemented processing. In this paper a procedure of virtual measurement in a dead room is developed and some typical layouts of playback systems employing two loudspeakers are compared. Based on the consistency of the room-acoustical indicators derived from “real” and “virtual” impulse responses can be investigated. It is shown how the performance depends on the angular separation of loudspeakers and the efficiency of the cross-talk is also tested and discussed. Finally, a set-up which is suitable for psychoacoustics tests is indicated.  相似文献

A religion affiliation can be considered as a “degree of freedom” of an agent on the human genre network. A brief review is given on the state of the art in data analysis and modelization of religious “questions” in order to suggest and if possible initiate further research, after using a “statistical physics filter”. We present a discussion of the evolution of 18 so-called religions, as measured through their number of adherents between 1900 and 2000. Some emphasis is made on a few cases presenting a minimum or a maximum in the investigated time range—thereby suggesting a competitive ingredient to be considered, besides the well accepted “at birth” attachment effect. The importance of the “external field” is still stressed through an Avrami late stage crystal growth-like parameter. The observed features and some intuitive interpretations point to opinion based models with vector, rather than scalar, like agents.  相似文献

In this paper, a complex contact network is constructed as substrate for cultural diffusion. Agents are partitioned into “clusters”, interpreted as sub-cultural groups. Cultural dissemination works both within the cluster and across clusters. To reflect connection intensity, an extra-cluster interaction damping coefficient is defined. The probability of interaction between agents through the intra-cluster contact is higher than through extra-cluster. Dynamical behavior of the cultural diffusion model is studied in this contact network. It is found that there is a critical value of extra-interaction intensity that separates the system from a multicultural to mono-cultural state for low values of the number of vectors (options) per cultural feature (attribute).  相似文献

Using the original and ‘symmetrical face’ training samples to perform representation based face recognition was first proposed in [1]. It simultaneously used the original and ‘symmetrical face’ training samples to perform a two-step classification and achieved an outstanding classification result. However, in [1] the “symmetrical face” is devised only for one method. In this paper, we do some improvements on the basis of [1] and combine this “symmetrical faces” transformation with several representation based methods. We exploit all original training samples, left “symmetrical face” training samples and right “symmetrical face” training samples for classification and use the score fusion for ultimate face recognition. The symmetry of the face is first used to generate new samples, which is different from original face image but can really reflect some possible appearance of the face. It effectively overcomes the problem of non-sufficient training samples. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme can be used to improve a number of traditional representation based methods including those that are not presented in the paper.  相似文献

Cyclic competition game models, particularly the “rock–paper–scissors” model, play important roles in exploring the problem of multi-species coexistence in spatially ecological systems. We propose an extended “rock–paper–scissors” game to model cyclic interactions among five species, and find that two of the five can coexistent when biodiversity disappears, which is different from the “rock–paper–scissors” game. As the number of fingers is five, we named the new model the “fingers” game, where the thumb, forefinger, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger cyclically dominate their subsequent species and are dominated by their former species. We investigate the “fingers” model in two ways: direct simulations and nonlinear partial differential equations. An important finding is that the number of species in a cyclic competition game has an influence on the emergence of biodiversity. To be specific, the “rock–paper–scissors” model is in favor of maintaining biodiversity in comparison with the “fingers” model when the variables (population size, reproduction rate, selection rate, and migration rate) are the same. It is also shown that the mobility and reproduction rate can promote or jeopardize biodiversity.  相似文献

The economy globalization measure problem is discussed. Four macroeconomic indices of twenty among the “richest” countries are examined. Four types of “distances” are calculated. Two types of networks are next constructed for each distance measure definition. It is shown that the globalization process can be best characterised by an entropy measure, based on entropy Manhattan distance. It is observed that a globalization maximum was reached during the interval 1970-2000. More recently a deglobalization process has been observed.  相似文献

Over 80 years ago Samuel Wilks proposed that the “generalized variance” of a random vector is the determinant of its covariance matrix. To date, the notion and use of the generalized variance is confined only to very specific niches in statistics. In this paper we establish that the “Wilks standard deviation” –the square root of the generalized variance–is indeed the standard deviation of a random vector. We further establish that the “uncorrelation index” –a derivative of the Wilks standard deviation–is a measure of the overall correlation between the components of a random vector. Both the Wilks standard deviation and the uncorrelation index are, respectively, special cases of two general notions that we introduce: “randomness measures” and “independence indices” of random vectors. In turn, these general notions give rise to “randomness diagrams”—tangible planar visualizations that answer the question: How random is a random vector? The notion of “independence indices” yields a novel measure of correlation for Lévy laws. In general, the concepts and results presented in this paper are applicable to any field of science and engineering with random-vectors empirical data.  相似文献

Residents perception of road traffic noise loudness in relation to the measured noise indices close to their dwellings was studied. Percentile distributions of five loudness categories as a function of the Day-Night noise index LDN were obtained. Hearing sensitivity was considered as a factor in loudness perception. In addition, the prevalence of people’s perception of traffic noise in the “Extremely Loud” loudness category was compared with percentage of people stating that they were “Highly Annoyed” by noise. It is concluded that hearing sensitivity for noise is one of the variables that explains the loudness classification difference in different LDN index ranges and that the percentages of people “Highly Annoyed” by noise are slightly higher than the percentages obtained in the “Extremely Loud” category of loudness perception.  相似文献

The history of trade is a progression from a pure barter system. A medium of exchange emerges autonomously in the market, a position currently occupied by money. We investigate an agent-based computational economics model consisting of interacting agents considering distinguishable properties of commodities which represent salability. We also analyze the properties of the commodity network using a spanning tree. We find that the “storage fee” is more crucial than “demand” in determining which commodity is used as a medium of exchange.  相似文献

The time dependence of atomic level populations in evolving plasmas is studied using an eigenfunction expansion of the non-LTE rate equations. The work aims to develop understanding without the need for, and as an aid to, numerical solutions. The discussion is mostly limited to linear systems, especially those for optically thin plasmas, but the implicitly non-linear case of non-LTE radiative transfer is briefly discussed. Eigenvalue spectra for typical atomic systems are examined using results compiled by Hearon. Diagonal dominance and sign symmetry of rate matrices show that just one eigenvalue is zero (corresponding to the equilibrium state), that the remaining eigenvalues have negative real parts, and that oscillations, if any, are necessarily damped. Gershgorin's theorems are used to show that many eigenvalues are determined by the radiative lifetimes of certain levels, because of diagonal dominance. With other properties, this demonstrates the existence of both “slow” and “fast” time-scales, where the “slow” evolution is controlled by properties of meta-stable levels. It is shown that, when collisions are present, Rydberg states contribute only “fast” eigenvalues. This justifies use of the quasi-static approximation, in which atoms containing just meta-stable levels can suffice to determine the atomic evolution on time-scales long compared with typical radiative lifetimes. Analytic solutions for two- and three-level atoms are used to examine the basis of earlier intuitive ideas, such as the “ionizing plasma” approximation. The power and limitations of Gershgorin's theorems are examined through examples taken from the solar atmosphere. The methods should help in the planning and interpretation of both experimental and numerical experiments in which atomic evolution is important. While the examples are astrophysical, the methods and results are applicable to plasmas in general.  相似文献

We here present a fixed agents version of an original model of the emergence of hierarchies among social agents first introduced by Bonabeau et al. Having interactions occurring on a social network rather than among “walkers” does not drastically alter the dynamics. But it makes social structures more stable and give a clearer picture of the social organisation in a “mixed” regime, where finite ordered domains appear.  相似文献

We performed a detailed experimental investigation and quantum-chemical analysis of a new series of near IR polymethine dyes with 5-butyl-7,8-dihydrobenzo[cd]furo[2,3-f]indolium terminal groups. We also synthesized and studied two neutral dyes, squaraine and tetraone, with the same terminal groups and performed a comparison of the spectroscopic properties of this set of “near IR” dyes (polymethine, squaraine, and tetraone) with an analogous set of “visible” dyes with simpler benzo[e]indolium terminal groups. From these measurements, we find that the dyes with dihydrobenzo[cd]furo[2,3-f]indolium terminal groups are characterized by a remarkably large shift ≈300 nm (≈200 nm for tetraone) of their absorption bands towards the red region. We discuss the difference in electronic structure for these molecules and show that the “near IR” dyes are characterized by an additional weak fluorescence band from the higher lying excited states connected with the terminal groups. Absorption spectra for the longest polymethines are solvent-dependent and are characterized by a broadening of the main band in polar solvents, which is explained by ground state symmetry breaking and reduced charge delocalization within the polymethine chromophore. The results of these experiments combined with the agreement of quantum chemical calculations moves us closer to a predictive capability for structure-property relations in cyanine-like molecules.  相似文献
