Maximal helicity-violating scattering amplitudes in N=4N=4 supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory are dual to Wilson loops on closed null polygons. We perform their operator product expansion analysis in two-dimensional kinematics in the soft-collinear approximation which corresponds to the case when some light-cone distances vanish. We construct the expansion in terms of multi-particle “heavy”–light operators, where the “heavy” fields are identified with the Wilson lines defining the OPE channel and the light fields emerge from the curvature of the contour. The correlation function of these define the remainder function. We study the dilatation operator for these operators at one-loop order and find that it corresponds to a non-compact open spin chain. This provides an alternative view on elementary excitations propagating on the GKP string at weak coupling, which now correspond to particles traveling along an open spin chain. The factorized structure of the Wilson loop in the soft limit allows one to represent the two-loop correction to the octagon Wilson loop as a convolution formula and find the corresponding remainder function.  相似文献

Open Wilson line operators and the generalized star product have been studied extensively in non-commutative gauge theories. We show that they also show up in non-commutative scalar field theories as universal structures. We first point out that the dipole picture of non-commutative geometry provides an intuitive argument for robustness of the open Wilson lines and generalized star products therein. We calculate the one-loop effective action of the non-commutative scalar field theory with cubic self-interaction and show explicitly that the generalized star products arise in the non-planar part. It is shown that, in the low-energy, large non-commutativity limit, the non-planar part is expressible solely in terms of the scalar open Wilson line operator and descendants, the latter being interpreted as composite operators representing a closed string. We show that a certain class of nonlocal scalar models, with a kinetic operator inspired by string field theory, is equivalent to a system which is local in the coordinates but nonlocal in an auxiliary evolution variable. This system admits both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations, and its Cauchy problem and quantization are well-defined. We classify exact nonperturbative solutions of the localized model which can be found via the diffusion equation governing the fields.  相似文献

The goal of the present paper is to provide a mathematically rigorous foundation to certain aspects of the theory of rational orbifold models in conformal field theory, in other words the theory of rational vertex operator algebras and their automorphisms. Under a certain finiteness condition on a rational vertex operator algebra V which holds in all known examples, we determine the precise number of g-twisted sectors for any automorphism g of V of finite order. We prove that the trace functions and correlation functions associated with such twisted sectors are holomorphic functions in the upper half-plane and, under suitable conditions, afford a representation of the modular group of the type prescribed in string theory. We establish the rationality of conformal weights and central charge. In addition to conformal field theory itself, where our conclusions are required on physical grounds, there are applications to the generalized Moonshine conjectures of Conway–Norton–Queen and to equivariant elliptic cohomology. We show that closed string solutions in the bulk of AdS space are related by T-duality to solutions representing an open string ending at the boundary of AdS. By combining the limit in which a closed string becomes small with a large boost, we find that the near-flat space short string in the bulk maps to a periodic open string world surface ending on a wavy line at the boundary. This open string solution was previously found by Mikhailov and corresponds to a time-like near-BPS Wilson loop differing by small fluctuations from a straight line. A simple relation is found between the shape of the Wilson loop and the shape of the closed string at the moment when it crosses the horizon of the Poincaré patch. As a result, the energy and spin of the closed string are encoded in properties of the Wilson loop. This suggests that closed string amplitudes with one of the closed strings falling into the Poincaré horizon should be dual to gauge theory correlators involving local operators and a Wilson loop of the T-dual (“momentum”) theory.  相似文献

We examine the calculation of the color-ordered disk level S-matrix element of massless scalar vertex operators for the special case that some of the Mandelstam variables for which there are no open string channel in the amplitude, are set to zero. By explicit calculation we show that the string form factors in the 2n-point functions reduce to one at the eikonal Regge limit.  相似文献

We discuss a lattice QCD mixed action investigation employing Wilson maximally twisted mass sea and overlap valence fermions. Using four values of the lattice spacing, we demonstrate that the overlap Dirac operator assumes a point-like locality in the continuum limit. We also show that by adopting suitable matching conditions for the sea and valence theories a consistent continuum limit for the pion decay constant and light baryon masses can be obtained. Finally, we confront results for sea–valence mixed meson masses and the valence scalar correlator with corresponding expressions of chiral perturbation theory. This allows us to extract low energy constants of mixed action chiral perturbation which characterize the strength of unitarity violations in our mixed action setup.  相似文献

We present a general setup for inflation in string theory where the inflaton field corresponds to Wilson lines in compact space in the presence of magnetic fluxes. T-dualities and limits on the value of the magnetic fluxes relate this system to the standard D-brane inflation scenarios, such as brane-antibrane inflation, D3/D7 brane inflation and different configurations of branes at angles. This can then be seen as a generalised approach to inflation from open string modes. Inflation ends when the Wilson lines achieve a critical value and an open string mode becomes tachyonic. Then hybrid-like inflation, including its cosmic string remnants, is realized in string theory beyond the brane annihilation picture. Our formalism can be incorporated within flux-induced moduli stabilisation mechanisms in type IIB strings. Also, contrary to the standard D-brane separation, Wilson lines can be considered in heterotic string models. We provide explicit examples to illustrate similarities and differences of our mechanism to D-brane inflation. In particular we present an example in which the η problem present in brane inflation models is absent in our case. We have examples with both blue and red tilted spectral index and remnant cosmic string tension .  相似文献

In this paper we calculate the exact partition function for free bosons on the plane with lacunae. First the partition function for a plane with two spherical holes is calculated by matching exactly for the infinite set of Wilson coefficients in an effective world line theory and then performing the ensuing Gaussian integration. The partition is then re-calculated using conformal field theory techniques, and the equality of the two results is made manifest. It is then demonstrated that there is an exact correspondence between the Wilson coefficients (susceptibilities) in the effective field theory and the weights of the individual excitations of the closed string coherent state on the boundary. We calculate the partition function for the case of three holes where CFT techniques necessitate a closed form for the map from the corresponding closed string pants diagrams. Finally, it is shown that the Wilson coefficients for the case of quartic and higher order kernels, where standard CFT techniques are no longer applicable, can also be completely determined. These techniques can also be applied to the case of non-trivial central charges.  相似文献

We develop the real vertex formalism for the computation of the topological string partition function with D-branes and O-planes at the fixed point locus of an anti-holomorphic involution acting non-trivially on the toric diagram of any local toric Calabi–Yau manifold. Our results cover in particular the real vertex with non-trivial fixed leg. We give a careful derivation of the relevant ingredients using duality with Chern–Simons theory on orbifolds. We show that the real vertex can also be interpreted in terms of a statistical model of symmetric crystal melting. Using this latter connection, we also assess the constant map contribution in Calabi–Yau orientifold models. We find that there are no perturbative contributions beyond one-loop, but a non-trivial sum over non-perturbative sectors, which we compare with the non-perturbative contribution to the closed string expansion.  相似文献

We define the partition and n-point functions for a vertex operator algebra on a genus two Riemann surface formed by sewing two tori together. We obtain closed formulas for the genus two partition function for the Heisenberg free bosonic string and for any pair of simple Heisenberg modules. We prove that the partition function is holomorphic in the sewing parameters on a given suitable domain and describe its modular properties for the Heisenberg and lattice vertex operator algebras and a continuous orbifolding of the rank two fermion vertex operator super algebra. We compute the genus two Heisenberg vector n-point function and show that the Virasoro vector one point function satisfies a genus two Ward identity for these theories.  相似文献

The one-loop effective action of non-commutative scalar field theory with cubic self-interaction is studied. Utilizing the worldline formulation, both the planar and non-planar parts of the effective action are computed explicitly. We find complete agreement of the result with the Seiberg–Witten limit of a string worldsheet computation and with the standard Feynman diagrammatics. We prove that, in the low-energy and large non-commutativity limit, the non-planar part of the effective action is simplified enormously and is resummable into a quadratic action of scalar open Wilson line operators. We propose a new approach towards the understanding of confinement. Starting from an anisotropic five-dimensional pure gauge theory, we approach a second order phase transition where the system reduces dimensionally. Dimensional reduction is realized via localization of the gauge and scalar degrees of freedom on four-dimensional branes. The gauge coupling deriving from the brane Wilson loop observable runs like an asymptotically free coupling at short distance, while it exhibits clear signs of string formation at long distance. The regularization used is the lattice. We take the continuum limit by keeping the ratio of the lattice spacing in the brane over the lattice spacing along the extra dimension constant and smaller than one.  相似文献

Recent works of the authors on string interpretation of the Wilson loop operators in QCD are reviewed in a self-contained fashion. Although most of the results have already appeared in print, some new materials is presented on renormalization of the Wilson loop operator and on the use of light-cone expansion to derive a linear string-like equation in light-cone formalism.  相似文献

The holographic principle in the PP-wave limit proposed in our previous works is further confirmed by studying impurity non-preserving processes which contain a fermionic BMN operator with one scalar and one fermion impurities. We show that the previously proposed duality relation between the matrix elements of the three point interaction Hamiltonian in the holographic string field theory and the OPE coefficients in super-Yang–Mills theory holds to the leading order in the large μ limit. Operator mixing is required to obtain the BMN operator of definite conformal dimension which corresponds to the string state with one scalar and one fermion excitations. The mixing term plays a crucial role for our duality relation to be valid. Our results, combined with those in the previous papers, provide a positive support that our duality relation holds for the general process regardless of the kind of impurities and of whether impurities conserve or not.  相似文献

We study vertex operators in 4D conformal field theory derived from quantized gravity, whose dynamics is governed by the Wess-Zumino action by Riegert and the Weyl action. Conformal symmetry is equal to diffeomorphism symmetry in the ultraviolet limit, which mixes positive-metric and negative-metric modes of the gravitational field and thus these modes cannot be treated separately in physical operators. In this paper, we construct gravitational vertex operators such as the Ricci scalar, defined as space-time volume integrals of them are invariant under conformal transformations. Short distance singularities of these operator products are computed and it is shown that their coefficients have physically correct signs. Furthermore, we show that conformal algebra holds even in the system perturbed by the cosmological constant vertex operator as in the case of the Liouville theory shown by Curtright and Thorn.  相似文献

We investigate low energy implications of string loop corrections to supergravity couplings which break a possible flavor universality of the tree level. If supersymmetry is broken by the dilaton F-term, universal soft scalar masses arise at the leading order but string loop corrections generically induce flavor-non-diagonal soft terms. Constraints from flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) and CP violation then require a large supersymmetry breading scale and thus heavy gluinos and squarks. If supersymmetry is broken by moduli F-terms, universality at the string tree level can only be guaranteed by extra conditions on the Kahler potential. A large hierarchy between the gluino and squark masses ensures that FCNC and CP-violation constraints are satisfied. If the soft scalar masses vanish at the string tree level, the cosmological problems related to light moduli can be evaded. However, generic string loop corrections violate FCNC bounds and require very heavy squark masses (∼ 100 TeV).  相似文献
