Ammonia has widely attracted interest as a potential candidate not only as a hydrogen energy carrier but also as a carbon free fuel for internal combustion engines, such as gas turbines. Because ammonia contains a nitrogen atom in its molecule, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and other pollutants may be formed when it burns. Therefore, understanding the fundamental product gas characteristics of ammonia/air laminar flames is important for the design of ammonia-fueled combustors to meet stringent emission regulations. In this study, the product gas characteristics of ammonia/air premixed laminar flames for various equivalence ratios were experimentally and numerically investigated up to elevated pressure conditions. In the experiments, a stagnation flame configuration was employed because an ammonia flame can be stabilized by using such a configuration without a pilot flame. The experimental results showed that the maximum NO mole fraction was about 3,500 ppmv, at an equivalence ratio of 0.9 at 0.1 MPa. The NO mole fraction decreased as the equivalence ratio increased. In addition, the maximum value of the NO mole fraction decreased with an increase in mixture pressure. Furthermore, it was experimentally clarified that the simultaneous reduction of NO and unburnt ammonia can be achieved at an equivalence ratio of about 1.06, which is the target equivalence ratio for emission control in rich-lean two-stage ammonia combustors. Comparison of experimental and numerical results showed that even though the reaction mechanisms employed have been optimized for predicting the laminar burning velocity of ammonia/air flames, they failed to satisfactorily predict the measured species in this study. Sensitivity analysis was used to identify elementary reactions that control the species profiles but have negligible effects on the burning velocity. It is considered that these reaction models need to be updated for accurate prediction of product gas characteristics of ammonia/air flames.  相似文献

Premixed turbulent flames of methane–air and propane–air stabilized on a bunsen type burner were studied using planar Rayleigh scattering and particle image velocimetry. The fuel–air equivalence ratio range was from lean 0.6 to stoichiometric for methane flames, and from 0.7 to stoichiometric for propane flames. The non-dimensional turbulence rms velocity, u′/SL, covered a range from 3 to 24, corresponding to conditions of corrugated flamelets and thin reaction zones regimes. Flame front thickness increased slightly with increasing non-dimensional turbulence rms velocity in both methane and propane flames, although the flame thickening was more prominent in propane flames. The probability density function of curvature showed a Gaussian-like distribution at all turbulence intensities in both methane and propane flames, at all sections of the flame.The value of the term , the product of molecular diffusivity evaluated at reaction zone conditions and the flame front curvature, has been shown to be smaller than the magnitude of the laminar burning velocity. This finding questions the validity of extending the level set formulation, developed for corrugated flames region, into the thin reaction zone regime by increasing the local flame propagation by adding the term to laminar burning velocity.  相似文献

Usually premixed flame propagation and laminar burning velocity are studied for mixtures at normal or elevated temperatures and pressures, under which the ignition delay time of the premixture is much larger than the flame resistance time. However, in spark-ignition engines and spark-assisted compression ignition engines, the end-gas in the front of premixed flame is at the state that autoignition might happen before the mixture is consumed by the premixed flame. In this study, laminar premixed flames propagating into an autoigniting dimethyl ether/air mixture are simulated considering detailed chemistry and transport. The emphasis is on the laminar burning velocity of autoigniting mixtures under engine-relevant conditions. Two types of premixed flames are considered: one is the premixed planar flame propagating into an autoigniting DME/air without confinement; and the other is premixed spherical flame propagating inside a closed chamber, for which four stages are identified. Due to the confinement, the unburned mixture is compressed to high temperature and pressure close to or under engine-relevant conditions. The laminar burning velocity is determined from the constant-volume propagating spherical flame method as well as PREMIX. The laminar burning velocities of autoigniting DME/air mixture at different temperatures, pressures, and autoignition progresses are obtained. It is shown that the first-stage and second-stage autoignition can significantly accelerate the flame propagation and thereby greatly increase the laminar burning velocity. When the first-stage autoignition occurs in the unburned mixture, the isentropic compression assumption does not hold and thereby the traditional method cannot be used to calculate the laminar burning velocity. A modified method without using the isentropic compression assumption is proposed. It is shown to work well for autoigniting mixtures. Besides, a power law correlation is obtained based on all the laminar burning velocity data. It works well for mixtures before autoignition while improvement is still needed for mixtures after autoignition.  相似文献

Ammonia combustion appears as a meaningful way to retrieve stored amounts of excess variable renewable energy, and the spark-ignition (SI) engine has been proposed as a practical conversion system. The present work aims at elucidating the combustion characteristics of ammonia blends in engine-relevant turbulent conditions. To that end, laminar and turbulent flame experiments were conducted in a constant-volume vessel at engine-relevant conditions of 445 K and 0.54 MPa to assess the combustion behavior of ammonia/hydrogen/air, ammonia/methane/air and methane/hydrogen/air mixtures observed in an all-metal single-cylinder SI engine. Results show that the respective accelerating or decelerating effects of hydrogen or methane enrichment observed in the SI engine could not be sufficiently explained by the measured laminar burning velocities of the mixtures. Since the latter are very low, the studied combustion regimes are at the boundary between the thin and broken reaction zones regimes, and thus strongly influenced by flame-turbulence interactions. The quantification of the flame response to turbulence shows much higher effects for ammonia blends, than for methane-based fuels. The aforementioned opposite effects of ammonia enrichment with hydrogen or methane are observed on the turbulent burning velocity during the turbulent flame experiments and correlated to the thermochemical properties of the reactants and the flame sensitivity to stretch. The latter may explain an unexpected bending effect on the turbulent-to-laminar velocity ratio when increasing the hydrogen fraction in the ammonia/hydrogen blend. Nevertheless, a very good correlation of the turbulent velocity was found with the Karlovitz and Damköhler numbers, that suggests that ammonia combustion in SI engines may be described following the usual turbulent combustion models. This encourages further investigations on ammonia combustion for the optimization of practical systems, by means of dedicated experiments and numerical simulations.  相似文献

Direct numerical simulations with a C3-chemistry model have been performed to investigate the transient behavior and internal structure of flames propagating in an axisymmetric fuel jet of methane, ethane, ethylene, acetylene, or propane in normal earth gravity (1g) and zero gravity (0g). The fuel issued from a 3-mm-i.d. tube into quasi-quiescent air for a fixed mixing time of 0.3 s before it was ignited along the centerline where the fuel–air mixture was at stoichiometry. The edge of the flame formed a vigorously burning peak reactivity spot, i.e., reaction kernel, and propagated through a flammable mixture layer, leaving behind a trailing diffusion flame. The reaction kernel broadened laterally across the flammable mixture layer and possessed characteristics of premixed flames in the direction of propagation and unique flame structure in the transverse direction. The reaction kernel grew wings on both fuel and air sides to form a triple-flame-like structure, particularly for ethylene and acetylene, whereas for alkanes, the fuel-rich wing tended to merge with the main diffusion flame zone, particularly methane. The topology of edge diffusion flames depend on the properties of fuels, particularly the rich flammability limit, and the mechanistic oxidation pathways. The transit velocity of edge diffusion flames, determined from a time series of calculated temperature field, equaled to the measured laminar flame speed of the stoichiometric fuel–air mixtures, available in the literature, independent of the gravity level.  相似文献

The effects of flow compression and flame stretch on the accurate determination of laminar flame speeds at normal and elevated pressures using propagating spherical flames at constant pressure or constant volume are studied theoretically and numerically. The results show that both the compression-induced flow motion and flame stretch have significant impacts on the accuracy of flame speed determination. For the constant pressure method, a new method to obtain a compression-corrected flame speed (CCFS) for nearly constant pressure spherical bomb experiments is presented. Likewise, for the constant volume method, a technique to obtain a stretch-corrected flame speed (SCFS) at elevated pressures and temperatures is developed. The validity of theoretical results for both constant pressure and constant volume methods is demonstrated by numerical simulations using detailed chemistry for hydrogen/air, methane/air, and propane/air mixtures. It is shown that the present CCFS and SCFS methods not only improve the accuracy of the flame speed measurements significantly but also extend the parameter range of experimental conditions. The results can be used directly in experimental measurements of laminar flame speeds.  相似文献

A new technique is reported for measuring burning velocities at high pressures in the final stages of two inwardly propagating flame kernels in an explosion bomb. The flames were initiated at diametrically opposite spark electrodes, close to the wall, in quiescent mixtures. Measurements of pressure and flame kernel propagation speeds by high-speed photography showed the burning velocities to be elevated above the corresponding laminar burning velocities as a result of the developing flame instabilities. The enhancement increased with increase in pressure and decreased with increase in Markstein number. When the Markstein number was negative, instabilities could be appreciable, as could the enhancement. For the iso-octane–air mixtures investigated, where the mixtures had well-characterised Markstein numbers or critical Peclet numbers at the relevant pressures and temperatures, it was possible to explain the enhancement quantitatively by the spherical explosion flame instability theory of Bechtold and Matalon, provided the critical Peclet number was that observed experimentally, and allowance was made for the changing pressure. With this theoretical procedure, it was possible to derive values of laminar burning velocity from the measured values of burning velocity over a wide range of equivalence ratios, pressures, and temperatures. The values became less reliable at the higher temperatures and pressures as the data on Markstein and critical Peclet numbers became less certain. It was found that with iso-octane as the fuel the laminar burning velocity decreased during isentropic compression.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a study on the effect of Lewis number, Le, on the stabilization and blow-off of laminar lean limit premixed flames stabilized on a cylindrical bluff body. Numerical simulations and experiments are conducted for propane, methane and two blends of hydrogen with methane as fuel gases, containing 20% and 40% of hydrogen by volume, respectively. It is found that the Le?>?1 flame blows-off via convection from the base of the flame (without formation of a neck) when the conditions for flame anchoring are not fulfilled. Le?≤?1 flames exhibit a necking phenomenon just before lean blow-off. This necking of the flame front is a result of the local reduction in mass burning rates causing flame merging and quenching of the thin flame tube formed. The structure of these flames at the necking location is found to be similar to tubular flames. It is found that extinction stretch rates for tubular flames closely match values at the neck location of bluff-body flames of corresponding mixtures, suggesting that excessive flame stretch is directly responsible for blow-off of the studied Le?≤?1 flames. After quenching of the neck, the upstream part forms a steady and stable residual flame in the wake of the bluff body while the downstream part is convected away.  相似文献

To model the thermo-acoustic excitation of flames in practical combustion systems, it is necessary to know how a turbulent flame front responds to an incident acoustic wave. This will depend partly on the way in which the burning velocity responds to the wave. In this investigation, the response of CH4/air and CH4/H2/air mixtures has been observed in a novel flame stabilisation configuration, in which the premixture of fuel and air is made to decelerate under controlled conditions in a wide-angle diffuser. Control is provided by an annular wall-jet of air and by turbulence generators at the inlet. Ignition from the outlet of the diffuser allows an approximately flat flame to propagate downwards and stabilise at a height that depends on the turbulent burning velocity. When the flow is excited acoustically, the ensemble-averaged height oscillates. The fluctuations in flow velocity and flame height are monitored by phase-locked particle image velocimetry and OH-planar laser induced fluorescence, respectively. The flame stabilised against a lower incident velocity as the acoustic amplitude increased. In addition, at the lowest frequency of 52 Hz, the fluctuations in turbulent burning velocity (as represented by the displacement speed) were out-of-phase with the acoustic velocity. Thus, the rate of displacement of the flame front relative to the flow slowed as the flow accelerated, and so the flame movement was bigger than it would have been if the burning velocity had not responded to the acoustic fluctuation. With an increase in frequency to 119 Hz, the relative flame movement became even larger, although the phase-difference was reduced, so the effect on burning velocity was less dramatic. The addition of hydrogen to the methane, so as to maintain the laminar burning velocity at a lower equivalence ratio, suppressed the response at low amplitude, but at a higher amplitude, the effect was reversed.  相似文献

A partially prevaporized spray burner was developed to investigate the interaction between fuel droplets and a flame. Monodispersed partially prevaporized ethanol sprays with narrow diameter distribution were generated by the condensation method using rapid pressure reduction of a saturated ethanol vapor–air mixture. A tilted flat flame was stabilized at the nozzle exit using a hot wire. Particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) was applied to measurements of the droplet velocity; the laminar burning velocity was obtained from gas velocity derived from the droplet velocity. Observations were made of flames in partially prevaporized spray streams with mean droplet diameters of 7 μm and the liquid equivalence ratios of 0.2; the total equivalence ratio was varied. In all cases, a sharp vaporization plane was observed in front of the blue flame. Flame oscillation was observed on the fuel-rich side. At strain rates under 50 s−1, the change in the burning velocity with the strain rate is small in fuel-lean spray streams. In spray streams of 0.7 and 0.8 in the total equivalence ratio, burning velocity increases with strain rates of greater than 50 s−1. However, in spray streams with 0.9 and 1.0 in the total equivalence ratio, burning velocity decreases as the strain rate increases. At strain rates greater than 80 s−1, burning velocity decreases with an increased gas equivalence ratio. The effect of mean droplet diameter, and the entry length of droplets into a flame on the laminar burning velocity, were also investigated to interpret the effect of the strain rate on the laminar burning velocity of partially prevaporized sprays.  相似文献

Understanding and quantifying the effects of flame stretch rate on the laminar flame speed and flame structure plays an important role from interpreting experimentally-measured laminar burning velocities to characterizing the impact of turbulence on premixed flames. Unfortunately, accounting for these effects often requires an unsteady reacting flow solver and may be computationally expensive. In this work, we propose a mathematical framework to perform simulations of stationary spherical flames. The objective is to maintain the flame at a constant radius (and hence a constant stretch rate) by performing a coordinate change. The governing equations in the new flame-attached frame of reference resemble the original equations for freely-propagating spherical flames. The only difference is the presence of additional source terms whose purpose is to drive the numerical solution to a steady state. These source terms involve one free parameter: the flame stretch rate, which may either be computed in real time or imposed by the user. This parameter controls ultimately the steady state flame radius and the steady state flame speed. That is why, at a given stretch rate, the results of the stationary spherical flame simulations match those of a freely-expanding spherical flame. As an illustration, the dependence of the laminar flame speed on the stretch rate is leveraged to extract Markstein lengths for hydrogen/air mixtures at different equivalence ratios, as well as for hydrocarbon/air mixtures (CH4 and C7H16). Numerical predictions are in good agreement with experimental measurements (within experimental uncertainties). Finally, the proposed methodology is implemented in the chemical kinetic software FlameMaster. The use of a dedicated steady-state solver with a non-uniform optimized mesh leads to significant reductions in the computational cost, highlighting that the proposed methodology is ideally suited for other chemical kinetic software such as Chemkin/Premix and Cantera.  相似文献

Hydrogen offers an attractive alternative to conventional fuels for use in spark ignition engines. It can be burned over a very wide range of equivalence ratios and with considerable exhaust gas recirculation. These help to minimise pumping losses through throttleless operation and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) production through reduced temperature. Full understanding of hydrogen-fuelled engine operation requires data on the laminar burning rate of hydrogen–air residuals under a wide range of conditions. However, such data are sparse. The present work addresses this need for experimental data. Spherically expanding H2–air flames were measured at a range of temperatures, pressures, and equivalence ratios and with varying concentrations of residuals of combustion. Unstretched burning velocities, ul, and Markstein lengths, Lb, were determined from stable flames. At the higher pressures, hydrodynamic and diffusional-thermal instabilities caused the flames to be cellular from inception and prohibited the derivation of values of ul and Lb. The effect of pressure on the burning rate was demonstrated to have opposing trends when comparing stoichiometric and lean mixtures. The present measurements were compared with those available in the literature, and discrepancies were attributed to neglect, in some works, the effects of stretch and instabilities. From the present measurements, the effects of pressure, temperature, and residual gas concentration on burning velocity are quantified for use in a first step towards a general correlation.  相似文献

The laminar flame speed is an important property of a reacting mixture and it is used extensively for the characterization of the combustion process in practical devices. However, under engine-relevant conditions, considerable reactivity may be present in the unburned mixture, introducing thus challenges due to couplings of auto-ignition and flame propagation phenomena. In this study, the propagation of transient, one-dimensional laminar flames into a reacting unburned mixture was investigated numerically in order to identify the parameters influencing the flame burning rate in the conduction-reaction controlled regime at constant pressure. It was found that the fuel chemical classification significantly influences the burning rate. More specifically, for hydrogen flames, the “evolution” of the burning rate does not depend on the initial unburned mixture temperature. On the other hand, for n-heptane flames that exhibit low temperature chemistry, the burning rate depends on the instantaneous temperature and composition of the unburned mixture in a coupled way. A new approach was developed allowing for the decoupling the flame chemistry from the ignition dynamics as well as for the decoupling of parameters influencing the burning rate, so that meaningful sensitivity analysis could be performed. It was determined that the burning rate is not directly affected by fuel specific reactions even in the presence of low temperature chemistry whose effect is indirect through the modification of the reactants composition entering the flame. The controlling parameters include but not limited to mixture conductivity, enthalpy, and the species composition evolution in the unburned mixture.  相似文献

This study is performed to experimentally examine the fundamental burning velocity characteristics of meso-scale outwardly propagating spherical laminar flames in the range of flame radius rf approximately from 1 to 5 mm for hydrogen, methane and propane mixtures, in order to make clear a method for improving combustion of micro–meso scale flames. Macro-scale laminar flames with rf > 7 mm are also examined for comparison. The mixtures have nearly the same laminar burning velocity (SL0 = 25 cm/s) for unstretched flames and different equivalence ratios ?. The radius rf and the burning velocity SLl of meso-scale flames are estimated by using sequential schlieren images recorded under appropriate ignition conditions. It is found that SLl of hydrogen and methane premixed meso-scale flames at the same rf or the Karlovitz number Ka shows a tendency to increase with decreasing ?, whereas SLl of propane flames increases with ?. However, SLl tends to decrease with the Lewis number Le and the Markstein number Ma, irrespective of the type of fuel and ?. It also becomes clear that the optimum flame size and Ka to improve the burning velocity exist for some mixtures depending on Le and fuel types.  相似文献

Laminar burning velocities of dimethyl ether (DME) and air premixed flames at elevated pressures up to 10 atm were measured by using a newly developed pressure-release type spherical bomb. The measurement system was validated using laminar burning velocities of methane–air flames. A comparison with the previous experimental data shows an excellent agreement and demonstrates the accuracy and reliability of the present experimental system. The measured flame speeds of DME–air flames were compared with the previous experimental data and the predictions using the full and reduced mechanisms. At atmospheric pressure, the measured laminar burning velocities of DME–air flames are in reasonable agreement with the previous data from spherical bomb method, but are much lower than both predictions and the experimental data of the PIV based counterflow flame measurements. The laminar burning velocities of DME–air flames at 2, 6, and 10 atm were also measured. It was found that flame speed decreases considerably with the increase of pressure. Moreover, the measured flame speeds are also lower than the predictions at high pressures. In addition, experiments showed that at high pressures the rich DME–air flames are strongly affected by the hydrodynamic and thermal-diffusive instabilities. Markstein lengths and the overall reaction order at different equivalence ratios were extracted from the flame speed data at elevated pressures. Sensitivity analysis showed that reactions involving methyl and formyl radicals play an important role in DME–air flame propagation and suggested that systematic modification of the reactions rates associated with methyl and formyl formations are necessary to reduce the discrepancies between predictions and measurements.  相似文献

The influence of Soret diffusion on lean premixed flames propagating in hydrogen/air mixtures is numerically investigated with a detailed chemical and transport models at normal and elevated pressure and temperature. The Soret diffusion influence on the one-dimensional (1D) flame mass burning rate and two-dimensional (2D) flame propagating characteristics is analysed, revealing a strong dependency on flame stretch rate, pressure and temperature. For 1D flames, at normal pressure and temperature, with an increase of Karlovitz number from 0 to 0.4, the mass burning rate is first reduced and then enhanced by Soret diffusion of H2 while it is reduced by Soret diffusion of H. The influence of Soret diffusion of H2 is enhanced by pressure and reduced by temperature. On the contrary, the influence of Soret diffusion of H is reduced by pressure and enhanced by temperature. For 2D flames, at normal pressure and temperature, during the early phase of flame evolution, flames with Soret diffusion display more curved flame cells. Pressure enhances this effect, while temperature reduces it. The influence of Soret diffusion of H2 on the global consumption speed is enhanced at elevated pressure. The influence of Soret diffusion of H on the global consumption speed is enhanced at elevated temperature. The flame evolution is more affected by Soret diffusion in the early phase of propagation than in the long run due to the local enrichment of H2 caused by flame curvature effects. The present study provides new insights into the Soret diffusion effect on the characteristics of lean hydrogen/air flames at conditions that are relevant to practical applications, e.g. gas engines and turbines.  相似文献

We review the state of the art in measurements and simulations of the behavior of premixed laminar and turbulent flames, subject to differential diffusion, stretch and curvature. The first part of the paper reviews the behavior of premixed laminar flames subject to flow stretch, and how it affects the accuracy of measurements of unstrained laminar flame speeds in stretched and spherically propagating flames. We then examine how flow field stretch and differential diffusion interact with flame propagation, promoting or suppressing the onset of thermodiffusive instabilities. Secondly, we survey the methodology for and results of measurements of turbulent flame speeds in the light of theory, and identify issues of consistency in the definition of mean flame speeds, and their corresponding mean areas. Data for methane at a single operating condition are compared for a range of turbulent conditions, showing that fundamental issues that have yet to be resolved for Bunsen and spherically propagating flames. Finally, we consider how the laminar flame scale response of flames to flow perturbations interacting with differential diffusion leads to very different outcomes to the overall sensitivity of the burning rate to turbulence, according to numerical simulations (DNS). The paper concludes with opportunities for future measurements and model development, including the perennial recommendation for robust archival databases of experimental and DNS results for future testing of models.  相似文献

The effects of blending syngas in different proportions to isooctane on the laminar burning velocity and ignition delay time of the fuel–air mixture have been studied in SI engine relevant conditions. The syngas is assumed to be composed of 50% H2 and 50% CO. Simulations have been carried out using a skeletal mechanism containing 143 species and 643 reaction steps. It has been found that the blending of syngas augments the laminar burning velocity of isooctane due to increase of the thermal diffusivity of the reactant mixture and alteration in the chemistry of the flame reactions. For the mixture of 30% isooctane/70% syngas, the laminar burning velocity and the ignition delay time values are very close to those corresponding to pure isooctane. Additionally, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation have been explored for the 30% isooctane/70% syngas–air flame. It is seen that the reduction in laminar burning velocity due to the dilution by the recirculated exhaust gas can be compensated by an increase in the unburnt gas temperature. The effect of the exhaust gas dilution on the ignition delay time of 30% isooctane/70% syngas–air mixture has been found to be negligible.  相似文献
