Two novel alternating π‐conjugated copolymers, poly[2,8‐(6,6′,12,12′‐tetraoctyl‐6,12‐dihydroindeno‐[1,2b]fluorene‐ alt‐5(1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole) ( P1 ) and poly[2,8‐(6,6′,12,12′‐tetraoctyl‐6,12‐dihydroindeno‐[1,2b]fluorene‐ alt‐5(1‐(p‐octylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole) ( P2 ), were synthesized via the Suzuki coupling method and their optoelectronic properties were investigated. The resulting polymers P1 and P2 were completely soluble in various common organic solvents and their weight‐average molecular weights (Mw) were 5.66 × 104 (polydispersity: 1.97) and 2.13× 104 (polydispersity: 1.54), respectively. Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells were fabricated in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:PC70BM(1:5)/TiOx/Al configurations. The BHJ solar cell with P1 :PC70BM (1:5) has a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.12% (Jsc= 3.39 mA/cm2, Voc= 0.67 V, FF = 49.31%), measured using AM 1.5 G solar simulator at 100 mW/cm2 light illumination. We fabricated polymer light‐emitting diodes (PLEDs) in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/emitting polymer:polyethylene glycol (PEG)/Ba/Al configurations. The electroluminescence (EL) maxima of the fabricated PLEDs varied from 526 nm to 556 nm depending on the ratio of the polymer to PEG. The turn‐on voltages of the PLEDs were in the range of 3–8 V depending on the ratio of the polymer to PEG, and the maximum brightness and luminance efficiency were 2103 cd/m2 and 0.37 cd/A at 12 V, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of three new 1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole‐based polymers such as poly[1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole] ( PTPT ), poly[1,4‐(2,5‐bis(octyloxy)phenylene)‐alt‐5,5'‐(1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole)] ( PPTPT ), and poly[2,5‐(3‐octylthiophene)‐alt‐5,5'‐(1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐2,5‐di(2‐thienyl)pyrrole)] ( PTTPT ) were synthesized and characterized. The new polymers were readily soluble in common organic solvents and the thermogravimetric analysis showed that the three polymers are thermally stable with the 5% degradation temperature >379 °C. The absorption maxima of the polymers were 478, 483, and 485 nm in thin film and the optical band gaps calculated from the onset wavelength of the optical absorption were 2.15, 2.20, and 2.13 eV, respectively. Each of the polymers was investigated as an electron donor blending with PC70BM as an electron acceptor in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. BHJ solar cells were fabricated in ITO/PEDOT:PSS/polymer:PC70BM/TiOx/Al configurations. The BHJ solar cell with PPTPT :PC70BM (1:5 wt %) showed the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.35% (Jsc = 7.41 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.56 V, FF = 33%), measured using AM 1.5G solar simulator at 100 mW/cm2 light illumination. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four new D—A type copolymers with 2D‐conjugated side‐chain identified PfToBT, PbToBT, PfTDPP and PbTDPP, containing two acceptors 4,7‐dithien‐2‐yl‐benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTBT), and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) linked by thiophene donors, are obtained using Pd‐catalyzed Stille‐coupling reaction. These polymers show a broad visible‐near‐infrared absorption band (Eg = 1.79–1.66 eV) and possess a relatively low‐lying HOMO level at ?5.34 to ?5.12 eV. All the polymer:PC70BM blend films showed edge‐on structure and have similar dπ‐spacing values. According to the structure of conjugated side‐chain, the vertical distributions of polymer chains and PC70BM within the BHJ (bulk heterojunction) were different. When DPP used as an acceptor, conjugated side chains of the polymer coexisted with PC70BM in same position. The BHJ film prepared from PfToBT, PbToBT had a discontinuous network between polymer and PC70BM, whereas films from PfTDPP and PbTDPP formed continuous and evenly distributed network between them. This optimized vertical morphology promotes hole transport along respective pathways of polymers and fullerenes in the vertical direction, leading to high JSC. PbTDPP shows PCE up to 2.9% (Jsc of 9.4 mA/cm2, Voc of 0.68 V, and FF of 0.44). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2016 , 54, 2746–2759  相似文献

A soluble 4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b ;3,4‐b ′]dithiophene‐4‐one (CPDTO)‐based polymer (C6‐PCPDTO) has been synthesized from two monomers derived from nonalkylated CPDTO and didodecyl CPDTO (C12‐CPDTO). Proton NMR, thermal analysis, UV–vis absorption, cyclic voltammetry, and XRD are used to characterize the polymer in solution and film. The new polymer has an optical bandgap of 1.28 eV in film, and has strong interchain interaction in chloroform solutions. The polymer contains a significant amount of homocoupled segments. The regular segments and homocoupled CPDTO segments render the polymer highly aggregating in solution. The non‐planar homocoupled C12‐CPDTO segments prevent the polymer from forming regular π‐stacks, resulting in a low SCLC hole mobility (3.88 × 10?7 cm2V?1s?1). CV experiments show that C6‐PCPDTO is stable in its oxidized and reduced states. Solar cell devices were fabricated from C6‐PCPDTO2 :PC60BM blends of different weight ratios. High PC60BM loading (80% or greater) was required for the devices to show measurable efficiency, indicating that the limited π‐stacking of the polymer is not sufficient to cause effective phase separation. Further development of synthetic method is still needed to eliminate structural defects so that long‐range ordered pi‐stacking can be realized in the polymer for these applications. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A class of the 9,9‐dioctylfluorene‐alt‐5,7‐bis(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐2,3‐biphenylthieno [3,4‐b]pyrazine copolymeric derivatives (PFO‐3ThPz‐D) attaching additional donor (D) units in the pendant phenyl ring with a D‐A D structure was synthesized and investigated, where the additional D unit is a substituent group of fluorene, carbazole, and triphenylamine (Tpa). Their photovoltaic properties were significantly tuned by these pending donor units. Among these copolymers, the PFO‐3ThPz‐Tpa exhibited the best photovoltaic properties in the bulk heterojunction polymeric solar cells (BHJ‐PSC). The maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.09% and the highest circuit current density (Jsc) of 7.91 mA/cm2 were obtained in the cell using a blend of PFO‐3ThPz‐Tpa and PC60BM (1:3, w/w) as active layer, which are 2.5 and 1.8 times higher than those corresponding levels in the other cell using the parent PFO‐3ThPz‐Ph copolymer instead of PFO‐3ThPz‐Tpa as donor, respectively. While PC60BM was replaced by PC70BM, the PFO‐3ThPz‐Tpa‐based BHJ‐PSC exhibited better photovoltaic properties with PCE of 3.08% and Jsc of 10.3 mA/cm2. This work demonstrated that attaching donor units into the D‐A‐based copolymeric side‐chain is a simple and effective method to improve the photovoltaic properties for the resulting copolymers. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of low‐band‐gap (LBG) donor–accepor conjugated main‐chain copolymers ( P1 – P4 ) containing planar 2,7‐carbazole as electron donors and bithiazole units (4,4′‐dihexyl‐2,2′‐bithiazole and 4,4′‐dihexyl‐5,5′‐di(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐2,2′‐bithiazole) as electron acceptors were synthesized and studied for the applications in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. The effects of electron deficient bithiazole units on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic (PV) properties of these LBG copolymers were investigated. Absorption spectra revealed that polymers P1 – P4 exhibited broad absorption bands in UV and visible regions from 300 to 600 nm with optical band gaps in the range of 1.93–1.99 eV, which overlapped with the major region of the solar emission spectrum. Moreover, carbazole‐based polymers P1 – P4 showed low values of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels, which provided good air stability and high open circuit voltages (Voc) in the PV applications. The BHJ PV devices were fabricated using polymers P1 – P4 as electron donors and (6,6)‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or (6,6)‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as electron acceptors in different weight ratios. The PV device bearing an active layer of polymer blend P4:PC71BM (1:1.5 w/w) showed the best power conversion efficiency value of 1.01% with a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 4.83 mA/cm2, a fill factor (FF) of 35%, and Voc = 0.60 V under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel low‐bandgap triphenylamine‐based conjugated polymers ( PCAZCN , PPTZCN , and PDTPCN ) consisting of different electron‐rich donor main chains (N‐alkyl‐2,7‐carbazole, phenothiazine, and cyclopentadithinopyrol, respectively) as well as cyano‐ and dicyano‐vinyl electron‐acceptor pendants were synthesized and developed for polymer solar cell applications. The polymers covered broad absorption spectra of 400–800 nm with narrow optical bandgaps ranging 1.66–1.72 eV. The highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels of the polymers measured by cyclic voltammetry were found in the range of ?5.12 to ?5.32 V and ?3.45 to ?3.55 eV, respectively. Under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination, bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices composing of an active layer of electron‐donor polymers ( PCAZCN , PPTZCN , and PDTPCN ) blended with electron‐acceptor [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester or [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) in different weight ratios were investigated. The photovoltaic device containing donor PCAZCN and acceptor PC71BM in 1:2 weight ratio showed the highest power conversion efficiency of 1.28%, with Voc = 0.81 V, Jsc = 4.93 mA/cm2, and fill factor = 32.1%. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly((2‐Alkylbenzo[1,2,3]triazole‐4,7‐diyl)vinylene)s (pBTzVs) synthesized by Stille coupling show different absorption spectra, solid‐state morphology, and photovoltaic performance, depending on straight‐chain versus branched‐chain (pBTzV12 and pBTzV20) pendant substitution. Periodic boundary condition density functional computations show limited alkyl pendant effects on isolated chain electronic properties; however, pendants could influence polymer backbone conjugative planarity and polymer solid film packing. The polymers are electronically ambipolar, with best performance by pBTzV12 with hole and electron transport mobilities of 4.86 × 10?6 and 1.96 × 10?6 cm2 V?1 s?1, respectively. pBTzV12 gives a smooth film morphology, whereas pBTzV20 gives a very different fibrillar morphology. For ITO/PEDOT:PSS/(1:1 w/w polymer:PC71BM)/LiF/Al devices, pBTzV12 gives power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 2.87%, and pBTzV20 gives up to PCE = 1.40%; both have open‐circuit voltages of VOC = 0.6–0.7 V. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report the synthesis, characterization, microphase separation, field‐effect charge transport, and photovoltaic properties of regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(3‐cyclohexylthiophene) (P3HT‐b‐P3cHT). Two compositions of P3HT‐b‐P3cHT (HcH63 and HcH77) were synthesized with weight‐average molecular weights of 155,500 and 210,800 and polydispersity indices of 1.45 and 1.57, respectively. Solvent‐casted HcH77 was found to self‐assemble into nanowires with a width of 12.5 ± 0.9 nm and aspect ratios of 50–120, as observed by TEM imaging. HcH77 and HcH63 annealed 280 °C were observed by small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) to be microphase‐separated with characteristic length scales of 17.0–21.7 nm. The microphase‐separated domains were shown to be crystalline with interlayer backbone (100) d‐spacings of 1.69 and 1.40 nm, which correspond to the P3HT and P3cHT blocks, respectively. Field‐effect transistors fabricated from P3HT‐b‐P3cHT thin films showed a mobility of holes (0.0019 cm2/Vs) which is independent of thermal annealing. Bulk heterojunction solar cells based on HcH77/fullerene (PC71BM) blend thin films had a maximum power conversion efficiency of 2.45% under 100 mW/cm2 AM1.5 solar illumination in air. These results demonstrate that all‐conjugated block copolymers are suitable semiconductors for applications in field‐effect transistors and bulk heterojunction solar cells. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new carbazole‐based electron accepting unit, 5‐(2,7‐dibromo‐9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl)benzo[a]phenazine (CBP), was newly designed and synthesized as the acceptor part of donor‐acceptor type low band‐gap polymers for polymer solar cells. The CBP was copolymerized with electron donating monomers such as benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) or 4,8‐bis(2‐octyl‐2‐thienyl)‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDTT) through Stille cross‐coupling polymerization, and produced two alternating copolymers, PBDT‐CBP and PBDTT‐CBP. An alternating copolymer (PBDT‐CBZ) consisted of 2,7‐dibromo‐9‐(heptadecan‐9‐yl)‐9H‐carbazole (CBZ) and BDT units was also synthesized for comparison. PBDT‐CBZ showed the maximum absorption at 430 nm and did not show absorption at wavelengths longer than 513 nm. However, CBP containing polymers (PBDT‐CBP and PBDTT‐CBP) showed a broad absorption between 300 and 850 nm due to the intramolecular charge transfer interaction between the electron donating and accepting blocks in the polymeric backbone. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices were fabricated using the synthesized polymers as electron donors and [6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as electron acceptor. One of these devices showed a power conversion efficiency of 2.33%, with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.81 V, a short‐circuit current of 6.97 mA/cm2, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.41 under air mass (AM) 1.5 global (1.5 G) illumination conditions (100 mW/cm2). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two conjugated main‐chain polymers consisting of heteroarene‐fused π‐conjuagted donor moiety alternating with 4,7‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (P1) or 2,5‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl) thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole (P2) units have been synthesized. They are intrinsically amorphous in nature and do not exhibit crystalline melting temperatures during thermal analysis. The effect of the fused rings on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, charge transport, and photovoltaic properties of these polymers has been investigated. The polymer (P1) containing 4,7‐bis(5‐bromo‐4‐octylthiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazole has a broad absorption extending from 300 to 600 nm with optical bandgaps as low as 2.02 eV. The HOMO levels (5.42 to 5.29 eV) are more sensitive to the choice of acceptor. The polymers were employed to fabricate organic photovoltaic cells with methanofullerene [6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM). As a result, the polymer solar cell device containing P1 had the best preliminary results with an open‐circuit voltage of 0.61 V, a short‐circuit current density of 6.19 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.32, offering an overall power conversion efficiency of 1.21%. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to improve the solution processability of 4,7‐bis(thiophen‐2‐yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTBT)‐based polymers, novel donor–acceptor polymer PTOBDTDTBT containing DTBT and benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) with conjugated side chain is designed and synthesized with narrow band gap 1.67 eV and low lying HOMO energy level −5.4 eV. The blend film of PTOBDTDTBT and PC71BM exhibits uniform and smooth film with root‐mean‐square (RMS) surface roughness 1.15 nm because of the excellent solubility of PTOBDTDTBT when six octyloxy side chains are introduced. The hole mobility of the blend film is measured to be 4.4 × 10−5 cm2 V−1s−1 by the space‐charge‐limited current (SCLC) model. The optimized polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on PTOBDTDTBT /PC71BM exhibits an improved PCE of 6.21% with Voc = 0.80 V, Jsc = 11.94 mA cm−2 and FF = 65.10%, one of the highest PCE in DTBT containing polymers.

We have synthesized and characterized two new carbazole‐based conjugated polymers, PCDCN and PCDTA , incorporating two strong light‐absorbing organic dyes. These polymers exhibit relatively low band gaps (~1.5 eV) and broad absorption ranges (from 300 to 700 nm). We fabricated polymer solar cells incorporating these polymers as donors and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the acceptor. At a blending ratio of 1:4, we obtained power conversion efficiencies, under simulated AM 1.5 (100 mW/cm2) conditions, of 2.31% and 2.47% for the PCDCN ‐ and PCDTA ‐based devices, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new conjugated polymer (PBAIIDTT) based on bay‐annulated indigo and indacenodithieno[3,2‐b]thiophene was designed, synthesized, and characterized. PBAIIDTT shows strong absorption in 400–500 and 600–800 nm, and its HOMO and LUMO energy levels are −5.45 eV and −3.65 eV, respectively. In organic field‐effect transistors, the polymer exhibits a relatively high hole mobility of 0.39 cm2 V−1 s−1. PBAIIDTT was added to poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) based organic solar cells. Ternary blend solar cells with 10% PBAIIDTT show an increased short circuit current density due to the broadened photocurrent generated in the near‐infrared region, and a power conversion efficiency of 3.78%, which is higher than that of the P3HT:PC61BM binary control devices (3.33%). © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low bandgap polymers with dithienylquinoxaline moieties based on 6H‐phenanthro[1,10,9,8‐cdefg]carbazole were synthesized via the Suzuki coupling reaction. Alkoxy groups were substituted at two different positions on the phenyl groups of the quinoxaline units of these polymers: in the para‐position (PPQP) and in the meta‐position (PPQM). The two polymers showed similar physical properties: broad absorption in the range of 400–700 nm, optical bandgaps of ~1.8 eV, and the appropriate frontier orbital energy levels for efficient charge transfer/separation at polymer/PC71BM interfaces. However, the PPQM solar cell achieved a higher PCE due to its higher Jsc. Our investigation of the morphologies of the polymer:PC71BM blend films and theoretical calculations of the molecular conformations of the polymer chains showed that the polymer with the meta‐positioned alkoxy group has better miscibility with PC71BM than the polymer with the para‐positioned alkoxy group because the dihedral angle of its phenyl group with respect to the quinoxaline unit is higher. This higher miscibility resulted in a polymer:PC71BM blend film with a better morphology and thus in a higher PCE. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Solution property of hydrogenated polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene/butylene)‐b‐polystyrene triblock copolymer (SEBS copolymer) was studied by using static light scattering and dynamic light scattering for cyclohexane and N‐methylpyrrolidone (NMP) solutions. From the values of dimensionless parameters ρ, defined as the ratio of radius of gyration 〈S21/2 to hydrodynamic radius RH, and solubility parameters, SEBS copolymer proved to exist as single chain close to random coil in nonpolar cyclohexane, whereas aggregate into the core‐shell micelle consisting of poly(ethylene/butylene) (PEB) core surrounded by PS shell in polar NMP. The core‐shell micelle formed in NMP is composed of 65 polymer chains, having three times larger average chain density (d = 0.12 g cm?3) than a single polymer chain (d = 0.04 g cm?3) in cyclohexane. The comparison with the aggregation behaviors in other solvents demonstrated that the aggregate compactness of the copolymer depended largely on solvent polarity, resulting in formation of the highly dense PEB core (Rc = 4.5 nm) and the thick PS shell (ΔR = 22.9 nm) in high‐polar NMP. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two β‐cyano‐thiophenevinylene‐based polymers containing cyclopentadithiophene ( CPDT‐CN ) and dithienosilole ( DTS‐CN ) units were synthesized via Stille coupling reaction with Pd(PPh3)4 as a catalyst. The effects of the bridged atoms (C and Si) and cyano‐vinylene groups on their thermal, optical, electrochemical, charge transporting, and photovoltaic properties were investigated. Both polymers possessed the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of about ?5.30 eV and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of about ?3.60 eV, and covered broad absorption ranges with narrow optical band gaps (ca. 1.6 eV). The bulk heterojunction polymer solar cell (PSC) devices containing an active layer of electron‐donor polymers ( CPDT‐CN and DTS‐CN ) blended with an electron‐acceptor, that is, [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), in different weight ratios were explored under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination. The PSC device based on DTS‐CN: PC71BM (1:2 w/w) exhibited a best power conversion efficiency (PCE) value of 2.25% with Voc = 0.74 V, Jsc = 8.39 mA/cm2, and FF = 0.36. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. P(BDT‐TCNT) and P(DTBDAT‐TCNT) , which has an extended conjugation length, were designed and synthesized for applications in organic solar cell (OSCs). The solution absorption maxima of P(DTBDAT‐TCNT) with the extended conjugation were red‐shifted by 5–15 nm compared with those of P(BDT‐TCNT) . The optical band gaps and highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of both P(BDT‐TCNT) and P(DTBDAT‐TCNT) were similar. The structure properties of thin films of these materials were characterized using grazing‐incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering and tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy, and charge carrier mobilities were characterized using the space‐charge limited current method. OSCs were formed using [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the electron acceptor and 3% diphenylether as additive suppress aggregation. OSCs with P(BDT‐TCNT) as the electron donor exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.10% with a short‐circuit current density of JSC = 9.06 mA/cm2, an open‐circuit voltage of VOC = 0.77 V, and a fill factor of FF = 0.58. OSCs formed using P(DTBDAT‐TCNT) as the electron donor layer exhibited a PCE of 5.83% with JSC = 12.2 mA/cm2, VOC = 0.77 V, and FF = 0.62. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. A series of new semiconducting polymers based on 4,4‐dihexyl‐4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b:3,4‐b′]dithiophene, 2,2‐dihexyl‐2H‐benzimidazole, and thiophene units was synthesized. The polymers show good solubility at room temperature in organic solvents owing to long alkyl chain in new acceptor, 2,2‐dihexyl‐2H‐benzimidazole. The advantage of dihexyl‐2H‐benzimidazole compared to the benzothiadiazole is to improve the solubility of the polymer. It was found that these polymers can finely be tuned for photovoltaic application by adjusting the contents ratio of the dihexyl‐2H‐benzimidazole unit. The spectra of the solid films show absorption bands with maximum peaks in the range of 421–577 nm and the absorption onsets at 588–683 nm, corresponding to band gaps of 2.11–1.82 eV. The devices with PCPDTDTHBI‐1 :PC71BM showed an open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.46 V, a short‐circuit current density (JSC) of 3.83 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.36, giving a power conversion efficiency of 0.64%. Decrease of the dihexyl‐2H‐benzimidazole contents in the polymers induced red‐shift of the UV absorptions, and increased VOC and JSC values, to improve the efficiency of organic photovoltaics. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of soluble donor‐acceptor conjugated polymers comprising of phenothiazine donor and various benzodiazole acceptors (i.e., benzothiadiazole, benzoselenodiazole, and benzoxadiazole) sandwiched between hexyl‐thiophene linkers were designed, synthesized, and used for the fabrication of polymer solar cells (PSC). The effects of the benzodiazole acceptors on the thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties of these low‐bandgap (LBG) polymers were investigated. These LBG polymers possessed large molecular weight (Mn) in the range of 3.85?5.13 × 104 with high thermal decomposition temperatures, which demonstrated broad absorption in the region of 300?750 nm with optical bandgaps of 1.80?1.93 eV. Both the HOMO energy level (?5.38 to ?5.47 eV) and LUMO energy level (?3.47 to ?3.60 eV) of the LBG polymers were within the desirable range of ideal energy level. Under 100 mW/cm2 of AM 1.5 white‐light illumination, bulk heterojunction PSC devices containing an active layer of electron donor polymers mixed with electron acceptor [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) in different weight ratios were investigated. The best performance of the PSC device was obtained by using polymer PP6DHTBT as an electron donor and PC71BM as an acceptor in the weight ratio of 1:4, and a power conversion efficiency value of 1.20%, an open‐circuit voltage (Voc) value of 0.75 V, a short‐circuit current (Jsc) value of 4.60 mA/cm2, and a fill factor (FF) value of 35.0% were achieved. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
