We define a transcendence degree for division algebras by modifying the lower transcendence degree construction of Zhang. We show that this invariant has many of the desirable properties one would expect a noncommutative analogue of the ordinary transcendence degree for fields to have. Using this invariant, we prove the following conjecture of Small. Let k be a field, let A be a finitely generated k-algebra that is an Ore domain, and let D denote the quotient division algebra of A. If A does not satisfy a polynomial identity, then GKdim(K) ≤ GKdim(A) − 1 for every commutative subalgebra K of D.  相似文献

We prove nilpotency of the alternator ideal of a finitely generated binary (-1,1)-algebra. An algebra is a binary (-1,1)-algebra if its every 2-generated subalgebra is an algebra of type (-1,1). While proving the main theorem we obtain various consequences: a prime finitely generated binary (-1,1)-algebra is alternative; the Mikheev radical of an arbitrary binary (-1,1)-algebra coincides with the locally nilpotent radical; a simple binary (-1,1)-algebra is alternative; the radical of a free finitely generated binary (-1,1)-algebra is solvable. Moreover, from the main result we derive nilpotency of the radical of a finitely generated binary (-1,1)-algebra with an essential identity.  相似文献

We give necessary and sufficient conditions under which an amalgamated free product of finitely generated nilpotent groups is a Howson group (that is the intersection of any two finitely generated subgroups is finitely generated). Also we prove that if G = ? t, K | t ?1 At = B ?, where K is a finitely generated and infinite nilpotent group and A, B non-trivial infinite proper subgroups of K, then G is not a Howson group. The problem of deciding when an ascending HNN-extension of a finitely generated nilpotent group is a Howson group is still open.  相似文献

We give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the group C1-algebra of a connected locally compact group to have a T1 primitive ideal space, i.e., to have the property that all primitive ideals are maximal. A companion result settles the same question almost entirely for almost connected groups. As a by-product of the method used, we show that every point in the primitive ideal space of the group C1-algebra of a connected locally compact group is at least locally closed. Finally, we obtain an analog of these results for discrete finitely generated groups; in particular the primitive ideal space of the group C1-algebra of a discrete finitely generated solvable group is T1 if and only if the group is a finite extension of a nilpotent group.  相似文献

Catenary Modules
We generalise the concept of catenary rings to modules. We call an A-module M catenary if for each pair of prime submodules K and L of M with KL all saturated chains of prime submodules of M from K to L have a common finite length. We show that any finitely generated module over a PID is catenary and also being catenary is a local property. Moreover, we prove that when A is a one dimensional Noetherian domain, then A is a Dedekind domain if and only if every finitely generated torsion-free A-module is catenary. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The Golod-Shafarevich examples show that not every finitely generated nil algebraA is nilpotent. On the other hand, Kaplansky proved that every finitely generated nil PI-algebra is indeed nilpotent. We generalise Kaplansky’s result to include those algebras that are only infinitesimally PI. An associative algebraA is infinitesimally PI whenever the Lie subalgebra generated by the first homogeneous component of its graded algebra gr(A)=⊕ t⩾1 A i /A i+1 is a PI-algebra. We apply our results to a problem of Kaplansky’s concerning modular group algebras with radical augmentation ideal. The author is supported by NSERC of Canada.  相似文献

We prove the isogeny conjecture for A-motives over finitely generated fields K of transcendence degree ≤1. This conjecture says that for any semisimple A-motive M over K, there exist only finitely many isomorphism classes of A-motives M′ over K for which there exists a separable isogeny M′→M. The result is in precise analogy to known results for abelian varieties and for Drinfeld modules and will have strong consequences for the \mathfrak p{\mathfrak {p}}-adic and adelic Galois representations associated to M. The method makes essential use of the Harder–Narasimhan filtration for locally free coherent sheaves on an algebraic curve.  相似文献

Our main aim in this note, is a further generalization of a result due to D. D. Anderson, i.e., it is shown that if R is a commutative ring, and M a multiplication R-module, such that every prime ideal minimal over Ann (M) is finitely generated, then M contains only a finite number of minimal prime submodules. This immediately yields that if P is a projective ideal of R, such that every prime ideal minimal over Ann (P) is finitely generated, then P is finitely generated. Furthermore, it is established that if M is a multiplication R-module in which every minimal prime submodule is finitely generated, then R contains only a finite number of prime ideals minimal over Ann (M).   相似文献

We study certain (two-sided) nil ideals and nilpotent ideals in a Lie nilpotent ring R. Our results lead us to showing that the prime radical rad(R) of R comprises the nilpotent elements of R, and that if L is a left ideal of R, then L + rad(R) is a two-sided ideal of R. This in turn leads to a Lie nilpotent version of Cohen's theorem, namely if R is a Lie nilpotent ring and every prime (two-sided) ideal of R is finitely generated as a left ideal, then every left ideal of R containing the prime radical of R is finitely generated (as a left ideal). For an arbitrary ring R with identity we also consider its so-called n-th Lie center Z n (R), n ≥ 1, which is a Lie nilpotent ring of index n. We prove that if C is a commutative submonoid of the multiplicative monoid of R, then the subring ?Z n (R) ∪ C? of R generated by the subset Z n (R) ∪ C of R is also Lie nilpotent of index n.  相似文献

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and let A be a finitely generated k-algebra that is a domain whose Gelfand-Kirillov dimension is in [2, 3). We show that if A has a nonzero locally nilpotent derivation then A has quadratic growth. In addition to this, we show that A either satisfies a polynomial identity or A is isomorphic to a subalgebra of D(X), the ring of differential operators on an irreducible smooth affine curve X, and A is birationally isomorphic to D(X).  相似文献

Homological properties of the Rees algebra R of a Koszul K-algebra A over a field K, with respect to the maximal homogeneous ideal, are studied. In particular, for a finitely generated graded A-module N with linear minimal free R-resolution over A, the minimal free resolution of is explicitly constructed. This resolution is again linear.Received: 23 October 2000  相似文献

In this paper we show that each divisor class of a finitely generated k-algebra R (k a field) contains a prime divisor if k is Hilbertian or if dim R≥ 2. On the way we also obtain partial results for domains finitely generated over an one-dimensional noetherian domain. Received: 27 June 1998  相似文献

Let A be a finite algebra that generates a congruence modular variety. We show that the free spectrum of V(A){\cal V}({\bf A}) fails to have a doubly exponentially lower bound if and only if A has a finitely generated clone and A is a direct product of nilpotent algebras of prime power cardinality.  相似文献

Let Rbe a right τ-noetherian ring, where τ denotes a hereditary torsion theory on the category of right R-modules. It is shown that every essential τ-closed right ideal of every prime homomorphic image of Rcontains a nonzero two-sided ideal if and only if any two τ-torsionfree injective indecomposable right R-modules with identical associated prime ideals are isomorphic, and for any τ-closed prime ideal Pthe annhilator of a finitely generated P-tame right R-module cannot be a prime ideal properly contained in P. Furthermore, if in the last condition finitely generated is replaced by r-noetherian, then all τ-noetherian τ-torsionfree modules turn out to be finitely annihilated.  相似文献

It is shown that if A is a stably finite C-algebra and E is a countably generated Hilbert A-module, then E gives rise to a compact element of the Cuntz semigroup if and only if E is algebraically finitely generated and projective. It follows that if E and F are equivalent in the sense of Coward, Elliott and Ivanescu (CEI) and E is algebraically finitely generated and projective, then E and F are isomorphic. In contrast to this, we exhibit two CEI-equivalent Hilbert modules over a stably finite C-algebra that are not isomorphic.  相似文献

Summary We study embeddings between torsion-free nilpotent groups having isomorphic localizations. Firstly, we show that for finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups of nilpotency class 2, the property of having isomorphicP-localizations (whereP denotes any set of primes) is equivalent to the existence of mutual embeddings of finite index not divisible by any prime inP. We then focus on a certain family Γ of nilpotent groups whose Mislin genera can be identified with quotient sets of ideal class groups in quadratic fields. We show that the multiplication of equivalence classes of groups in Γ induced by the ideal class group structure can be described by means of certain pull-back diagrams reflecting the existence of enough embeddings between members of each Mislin genus. In this sense, the family Γ resembles the family N0 of infinite, finitely generated nilpotent groups with finite commutator subgroup. We also show that, in further analogy with N0, two groups in Γ with isomorphic localizations at every prime have isomorphic localizations at every finite set of primes. We supply counterexamples showing that this is not true in general, neither for finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups of class 2 nor for torsion-free abelian groups of finite rank. We consider modules over minimax Abelian groups. We prove that if A is an Abelian minimax subgroup of the multiplicative group of a field k and if the subring K of the field k generated by the subgroup A is Noetherian, then the subgroup A is the direct product of a periodic group and a finitely generated group.  相似文献
