The problem of understanding the Fourier-analytic structure of the cone of positive functions on a group has a long history. In this article, we develop the first quantitative spectral concentration results for such functions over arbitrary compact groups. Specifically, we describe a family of finite, positive quadrature rules for the Fourier coefficients of band-limited functions on compact groups. We apply these quadrature rules to establish a spectral concentration result for positive functions: given appropriately nested band limits A ì B ì [^(G)]\mathcal {A}\subset \mathcal {B} \subset\widehat{G}, we prove a lower bound on the fraction of L 2-mass that any B\mathcal {B}-band-limited positive function has in A\mathcal {A}. Our bounds are explicit and depend only on elementary properties of A\mathcal {A} and B\mathcal {B}; they are the first such bounds that apply to arbitrary compact groups. They apply to finite groups as a special case, where the quadrature rule is given by the Fourier transform on the smallest quotient whose dual contains the Fourier support of the function.  相似文献

We consider interpolation methods defined by positive definite functions on a locally compact group G. Estimates for the smallest and largest eigenvalue of the interpolation matrix in terms of the localization of the positive definite function on G are presented, and we provide a method to get positive definite functions explicitly on compact semisimple Lie groups. Finally, we apply our results to construct well-localized positive definite basis functions having nice stability properties on the rotation group SO(3).  相似文献

We conjecture that a finitely generated relatively free group G has a finitely generated commutator subgroup G′ if and only if G satisfies a positive law. We confirm this conjecture for groups G in the large class, containing all residually finite and all soluble groups.  相似文献

For a finite group G, let ψ(G) denote the sum of element orders of G. It is known that the maximum value of ψ on the set of groups of order n, where n is a positive integer, will occur at the cyclic group ? n . In this paper, we investigate groups with the second largest value of ψ on the set of groups of the same order.  相似文献

We use a model theoretic approach to investigate properties of local-global principles for positive primitive formulas in spaces of orderings, such as the existence of bounds and the axiomatizability of local-global principles. As a consequence we obtain various classes of special groups satisfying local-global principles for all positive primitive formulas, and we show that local-global principles are preserved by some natural constructions in special groups.Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): 11E81, 03C65Acknowledgement This research was undertaken while both authors were partially suported by the European RTN Network (HPRN-CT-2001-00271) on real algebraic and analytic geometry.  相似文献

The spectrum of a finite group is the set of its element orders. Two groups are said to be isospectral if their spectra coincide. We deal with the class of finite groups isospectral to simple and orthogonal groups over a field of an arbitrary positive characteristic p. It is known that a group of this class has a unique nonabelian composition factor. We prove that this factor cannot be isomorphic to an alternating or sporadic group. We also consider the case where this factor is isomorphic to a group of Lie type over a field of the same characteristic p.  相似文献

Let G be a finite group. The symmetric genus σ(G) is the minimum genus of any Riemann surface on which G acts. We show that a non-cyclic p-group G has symmetric genus not congruent to 1(mod p 3) if and only if G is in one of 10 families of groups. The genus formula for each of these 10 families of groups is determined. A consequence of this classification is that almost all positive integers that are the genus of a p-group are congruent to 1(mod p 3). Finally, the integers that occur as the symmetric genus of a p-group with Frattini-class 2 have density zero in the positive integers.  相似文献

Acyclic covers
The following question, which is directly related to the Whitehead problem of subcomplexes of acyclic 2-complexes, is studied: If is a class of groups, X is a 2-dimensional CW-complex and X' is an acyclic, infinite cyclic cover of X with in , must X' be contractible? A positive answer is given if X is finite and is the class of amenable groups. Received: April 24, 1995.  相似文献

The nonabelian tensor product modulo q of two crossed modules of groups is investigated, where q is a positive integer. It is obtained a six term exact sequence of groups connecting the nonabelian tensor product modulo q with algebraic K-functor K 2 with Z q coefficients for (noncommutative) local rings. The notion of q-homology groups of a group G with coefficients in a G-module A is introduced, some its properties and calculations are given. The relationship between q-homology groups and derived functors of tensor product modulo q is studied.  相似文献

This paper presents a connection between the defining basis presented by Beilinson-Lusztig-MacPherson [1] in their geometric setting for quantum GLn and the isomorphism classes of linear quiver representations. More precisely, the positive part of the basis in [1] identifies with the defining basis for the relevant Ringel-Hall algebra; hence, it is a PBW basis in the sense of quantum groups. This approach extends to q-Schur algebras, yielding a monomial basis property with respect to the Drinfeld-Jimbo type presentation for the positive (or negative) part of the q-Schur algebra. Finally, the paper establishes an explicit connection between the canonical basis for the positive part of quantum GLn and the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis for q-Schur algebras.  相似文献

We contribute some results to the following question discussed in several papers ([3], [9], [12]): To what extent the characters of the irreducible representations of a nilpotent Lie groupN determine all central tempered distributions onN. A hereditary property is proved, which enables us to give a negative answer for a large class of nilpotent Lie groups. However, we give a positive answer for a certain series of two-step nilpotent groups. Furthermore, proving a generalisation of the Schwartz Kernel Theorem we decide the question specially for all groups of dimension<5.  相似文献

For which groups G of even order 2n does a 1‐factorization of the complete graph K2n exist with the property of admitting G as a sharply vertex‐transitive automorphism group? The complete answer is still unknown. Using the definition of a starter in G introduced in 4 , we give a positive answer for new classes of groups; for example, the nilpotent groups with either an abelian Sylow 2‐subgroup or a non‐abelian Sylow 2‐subgroup which possesses a cyclic subgroup of index 2. Further considerations are given in case the automorphism group G fixes a 1‐factor. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs  相似文献

It is known that a necessary condition for the existence of a 1‐rotational 2‐factorization of the complete graph K2n+1 under the action of a group G of order 2n is that the involutions of G are pairwise conjugate. Is this condition also sufficient? The complete answer is still unknown. Adapting the composition technique shown in Buratti and Rinaldi, J Combin Des, 16 (2008), 87–100, we give a positive answer for new classes of groups; for example, the groups G whose involutions lie in the same conjugacy class and having a normal subgroup whose order is the greatest odd divisor of |G|. In particular, every group of order 4t+2 gives a positive answer. Finally, we show that such a composition technique provides 2‐factorizations with a rich group of automorphisms. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Combin Designs 18: 237–247, 2010  相似文献

Abstract

Let ω(G) denote the number of orbits on the finite group G under the action of Aut(G). Using the classification of finite simple groups, we prove that for any positive integer n, there is only a finite number of (non-abelian) finite simple groups G satisfying ω(G) ≤ n. Then we classify all finite simple groups G such that ω(G) ≤ 17. The latter result was obtained by computational means, using the computer algebra system GAP.  相似文献

We say that an algebra R, graded by a group, is graded reversible if ab=0 implies ba=0 where a,b are homogeneous elements of R. In this note, we study graded reversibility when R=ℤG (viewed as a ℤ-algebra) and the grading group is cyclic of order two. A complete characterization of when this occurs is obtained for some classes of groups (including dihedral groups) assuming a positive answer to an open question concerning group gradings.  相似文献

Vector spaces over unspecified fields can be axiomatized as one-sorted structures, namely, abelian groups with the relation of parallelism. Parallelism is binary linear dependence. When equipped with the n-ary relation of linear dependence for some positive integer n, a vector-space is existentially closed if and only if it is n-dimensional over an algebraically closed field. In the signature with an n-ary predicate for linear dependence for each positive integer n, the theory of infinite-dimensional vector spaces over algebraically closed fields is the model-completion of the theory of vector spaces.   相似文献

It is shown that groups satisfying a law [X n ,Y]=[X, Y n ] for some positive integern must also satisfy an Engel-like condition [X, r Y]=[X, r+d Y]. Some further properties of these groups are being discussed.  相似文献
