The woody verdure of sea buckthorn is rich in protein substances. Among the soluble proteins, water- and alkali-soluble fractions predominate. The presence of 17 amino acids in the water-soluble proteins has been established. The sum of the essential amino acids amounts to 42.12–49.51%. The chemical composition of mixtures of resin acids isolated from the balsams of native conifer species, Scotch, Crimean, and Siberian pines andP. hamota andP. pityusa, Norway spruce, and Siberian larch, has been studied by the GLC method.2. The following resin acids are present in the balsams: pimaric, sandaracopimaric, levopimaric, palustric, isopimaric, abietic, dehydro- and dihydroabietic, neoabietic, four acids of undetermined chemical structure, and fatty acids. Summary From the wood of the Siberian firAbies sibirica Ledeb. and the Khingan firA. nephrolepis Maxim., five new compounds have been isolated which are ester derivatives of the lignans lariciresinol, olivil, and hydroxymatairesinol.It has been established that olivil is esterified at the primary alcoholic hydroxyl by hydroxycinnamic acids — p-coumaric or ferulic — and lariciresinol is esterified by vanillic acid. Summary 1. It has been established that in the reaction of Siberian larch bark with atmospheric oxygen in nitric acid, the hemicelluloses and the phenolic complex are oxidized most readily.2. The phenolic acids are decomposed almost completely. The considerable yield of oxalic acid shows a degradation of their aromatic nucleus during oxidation.3. In the oxidation of the bark lignin the cleavage of the lignin macromolecule to the final products does not take place directly. During oxidation an intermediate product with a quinoid system of bonds is formed in considerable amounts, and this then undergoes fragmentation as the result of the oxidative-hydrolytic action of the medium.Siberian Technological Institute, Krasnoyarsk.
