Let be a Fuchsian group of genus at least 2 (at least 3 if is non-oriented). We study the spaces of homomorphisms from to finite simple groups G, and derive a number of applications concerning random generation and representation varieties. Precise asymptotic estimates for |Hom(,G)| are given, implying in particular that as the rank of G tends to infinity, this is of the form |G|()+1+o(1), where () is the measure of . We then prove that a randomly chosen homomorphism from to G is surjective with probability tending to 1 as |G|. Combining our results with Lang-Weil estimates from algebraic geometry, we obtain the dimensions of the representation varieties , where is GLn(K) or a simple algebraic group over K, an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. A key ingredient of our approach is character theory, involving the study of the zeta function G(s)=(1)-s, where the sum is over all irreducible complex characters of G.  相似文献

If a group acts simply transitively on the vertices of an affine building with connected diagram, then must be of typeà n–1 for somen2, and must have a presentation of a simple type. The casen=2, when is a tree, has been studied in detail. We consider the casen=3, motivated particularly by the case when is the building ofG=PGL(3,K),K a local field, and when G. We exhibit such a group whenK=F q ((X)),q any prime power. Our study leads to combinatorial objects which we calltriangle presentations. These triangle presentations give rise to some new buildings of typeà 2.  相似文献

Let be a G-symmetric graph whose vertex set admits a nontrivial G-invariant partition with block size v. Let be the quotient graph of relative to and [B,C] the bipartite subgraph of induced by adjacent blocks B,C of . In this paper we study such graphs for which is connected, (G, 2)-arc transitive and is almost covered by in the sense that [B,C] is a matching of v-1 2 edges. Such graphs arose as a natural extremal case in a previous study by the author with Li and Praeger. The case K v+1 is covered by results of Gardiner and Praeger. We consider here the general case where K v+1, and prove that, for some even integer n 4, is a near n-gonal graph with respect to a certain G-orbit on n-cycles of . Moreover, we prove that every (G, 2)-arc transitive near n-gonal graph with respect to a G-orbit on n-cycles arises as a quotient of a graph with these properties. (A near n-gonal graph is a connected graph of girth at least 4 together with a set of n-cycles of such that each 2-arc of is contained in a unique member of .)  相似文献

Let G denote a semisimple group, a discrete subgroup, B=G/P the Poisson boundary. Regarding invariants of discrete subgroups we prove, in particular, the following:(1) For any -quasi-invariant measure on B, and any probablity measure on , the norm of the operator () on L 2(B,) is equal to (), where is the unitary representation in L 2(X,), and is the regular representation of .(2) In particular this estimate holds when is Lebesgue measure on B, a Patterson–Sullivan measure, or a -stationary measure, and implies explicit lower bounds for the displacement and Margulis number of (w.r.t. a finite generating set), the dimension of the conformal density, the -entropy of the measure, and Lyapunov exponents of .(3) In particular, when G=PSL2() and is free, the new lower bound of the displacement is somewhat smaller than the Culler–Shalen bound (which requires an additional assumption) and is greater than the standard ball-packing bound. We also prove that ()=G() for any amenable action of G and L 1(G), and conversely, give a spectral criterion for amenability of an action of G under certain natural dynamical conditions. In addition, we establish a uniform lower bound for the -entropy of any measure quasi-invariant under the action of a group with property T, and use this fact to construct an interesting class of actions of such groups, related to 'virtual' maximal parabolic subgroups. Most of the results hold in fact in greater generality, and apply for instance when G is any semi-simple algebraic group, or when is any word-hyperbolic group, acting on their Poisson boundary, for example.  相似文献

Summary Let be a closed, cocompact subgroup of a simply connected, solvable Lie groupG, such that Ad G has the same Zariski closure as AdG. If : GL n () is any finite-dimensional representation of , we show that virtually extends to a representation ofG. (By combining this with work of Margulis on lattices in semisimple groups, we obtain a similar result for lattices in many groups that are neither solvable nor semisimple.) Furthermore, we show that if is isomorphic to a closed, cocompact subgroup of another simply connected, solvable Lie groupG, then any isomorphism from to extends to a crossed isomorphism fromG toG. In the same vein, we prove a more concrete form of Mostow's theorem that compact solvmanifolds with isomorphic fundamental groups are diffeomorphic.Oblatum 5-VII-1994 & 15-IV-1995  相似文献

If (P, L) is a projective plane and is a triangle presentation compatible with a point-line correspondence :P L, then gives rise to a group and a thick building of typeà 2 on the vertices of which acts simply transitively. We find all triangle presentations (up to natural equivalence) compatible with some point-line correspondence :P L, when (P, L) is the projective plane of orderq=2 orq=3. For some, but not all, of these , is isomorphic to the building associated withG=PGL(3,K) whereK is a local field with discrete valuation and residual field of orderq. We identify the for which this is the case, and in these cases, find embeddings of intoG. We also describe the arithmetic nature of these groups.  相似文献

Summary In this article we develop a method of deriving asymptotic formulae for the orbital counting function for the action of certain discrete groups of isometries of simply connected negatively curved manifolds. We consider the particular case of normal subgroups 0 of a co-compact group 0 for which the quotient 0/ k . Even in the special case of manifolds ofconstant negative curvature, this leads to new results. In particular, we have asymptotic estimates for some groups which arenot geometrically finite.Oblatum III-1993 & 18-VIII-1993The first author was supported by The Royal Society through a University Research Fellowship. Summary A characterization of compact sets in Lp (0, T; B) is given, where 1P and B is a Banach space. For the existence of solutions in nonlinear boundary value problems by the compactness method, the point is to obtain compactness in a space Lp (0,T; B) from estimates with values in some spaces X, Y or B where XBY with compact imbedding XB. Using the present characterization for this kind of situations, sufficient conditions for compactness are given with optimal parameters. As an example, it is proved that if {fn} is bounded in Lq(0,T; B) and in L loc 1 (0, T; X) and if {fn/t} is bounded in L loc 1 (0, T; Y) then {fn} is relatively compact in Lp(0,T; B), p相似文献

In this paper we propose an axiomatization of the notion of system of terms of a theory by means of which we obtain a representation of equational classes (or varieties) of algebras. We define analgebraic transformational system (S.T.A.) as a quadruple (T,v,S,+) satisfying the axioms, where T is a set containing the variables v(n), n, and having operators S(): TT, . In addition there are operations Q+ on T commuting with the operators. A notion of morphism between S.T.A. 's is defined to obtain the category which is shown to be equivalent to the dual of the category of equational classes. In the last section we establish the equivalence between and Lawvere's category of algebraic theories in which every definable constant is present.

Let 1, 2, ... be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables with positive mean and finite variance and letr(b), b0, be real numbers tending to 0 asb . Definings n=1+...+n andS n=Sn(b)=sn+r(b)n, the stopping time =(b)=inf {n>/1:Sn >b} whereb=b(b) , will be considered with special regard to the excess over the boundaryR b=s+r(b)–b. It turns out that the limiting distribution ofR b is the same as in the caser(b)0 for allb. Proving this, Blackwell's renewal theorem and its integral version have to be established first in the above stated situation. Finally, an expansion ofE to vanishing terms asb will be provided and applied to some examples arising in economics.

We construct the CR invariant canonical contact form can(J) on scalar positive spherical CR manifold (M,J), which is the CR analogue of canonical metric on locally conformally flat manifold constructed by Habermann and Jost. We also construct another canonical contact form on the Kleinian manifold ()/, where is a convex cocompact subgroup of AutCRS2n+1=PU(n+1,1) and () is the discontinuity domain of . This contact form can be used to prove that ()/ is scalar positive (respectively, scalar negative, or scalar vanishing) if and only if the critical exponent ()<n (respectively, ()>n, or ()=n). This generalizes Nayatanis result for convex cocompact subgroups of SO(n+1,1). We also discuss the connected sum of spherical CR manifolds.  相似文献

A stochastic model of an epidemic is investigated, taking account of the removal of ill members of the population (by death, by recovery with immunization, by isolation) and natural immunization. Limiting distributions are found for the size of the epidemic, the number immunized 1, and their sum, under the assumption that the original number of susceptible individuals n and the number of ill individuals m , while n 1,n 0< , where and are the coefficients for the contraction of the disease and of immunization respectively.Translated from Matematicheskie Zametki, Vol. 8, No. 3, pp. 385–392, September, 1970.  相似文献

By a result of Pigozzi and Kogalovskii, every algebraic latticeL having a completely join —irreducible top element can be represented as the lattice L() of equational theories extending some fixed theory . Conversely, strengthening a recent result due to Lampe, we show that such a representationL=L() forcesL to satisfy the following condition: if the top element ofL is the join of a nonempty subsetB ofL then there are elementsb..., B such thata=(... (((b1 a) b2) a) ... bn) a for alla L. In presence of modularity, this equation reduces to the identitya=(a b1) ... (a bn). Motivated by these facts, we study several weak forms of distributive laws in arbitrary lattices and related types of prime elements. The main tool for applications to universal algebra is a generalized version of Lampe's Zipper Lemma.Presented by Ralph Freese.  相似文献

LetA be a von Neumann algebra,J be the ideal of compact operators relative toA and letF + be the left-Fredholm class ofA. We call almost left-Fredholm the class = {A A: if P A is a projection and AP J then P J}. Then and the inclusion is proper unlessA is semifinite and has a non-large center. satisfies all of the algebraic properties ofF + but it is generally not open. IfA is semifinite then A iff there are central projectionsG with G = I such that AG F+(AG). Let :A A/J. Then the left almost essential spectrum ofA A, , coincides with the set of eigenvalues of (A)  相似文献

Given a function: + on a domain spread over an infinite dimensional complex Banach space E with a Schauder basis such that -log is plurisubharmonic and d (d denotes the boundary distance on ) one can find a holomorphic function f: with f, where f is the radius of convergence of f. If, in addition, is locally Lipschitz continuous with constant 1, f can be chosen so that (3M)–1 f, where M is the basis constant of E. In the particular case of E= 1 there are holomorphic functions f on with= f.  相似文献

This article is the first in a series of three articles that discuss a particular class of minihypers and its applications. Proving that for small and < N, a {v + 1, v ; N, q}-minihyper consists of a sum of -spaces, we show that the excess points of an s-cover with excess of PG(N, q), (s + 1)|(N + 1), form a sum of s-spaces, and that no maximal partial s-spreads with deficiency of PG(N, q), (s + 1)|(N + 1), exist. The case q square will be studied in greater detail in [7] and further applications of these classification results on this class of minihypers will be published in [8].  相似文献

Consider the wave equation defined on a smooth bounded domain R n with boundary = 0 1. The control action is exercised in the Dirichlet boundary conditions only on 1 and is of classL 2(0,T: L 2(1)); instead, homogeneous boundary conditions of Dirichlet (or Neumann) type are imposed on the complementary part 0. The main result of the paper is a theorem which, under general conditions on the triplet {, 0, 1} with 0 , guarantees exact controllability on the spaceL 2() ×H –1() of maximal regularity forT greater than a computable timeT 0>0, which depends on the triplet. This theorem generalizes prior results by Lasiecka and the author [L-T.3] (obtained via uniform stabilization) and by Lions [L.5], [L.6] (obtained by a direct approach, different from the one followed here). The key technical issue is a lower bound on theL 2(1)-norm of the normal derivative of the solution to the corresponding homogeneous problem, which extends to a larger class of triplets {, 0, 1} prior results by Lasiecka and the author [L-T.3] and by Ho [H.1].This research was partially supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant NSF-DMS-8301668 and by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research under Grant AFOSR-84-0365.
