Slenderness is an important issue in design of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. Especially for long columns, second order effects may be not so small to neglect, but the calculation of second order effects may take too much time. For that reason, ACI 318 design code includes a simple approach in order to increase the flexural moment of columns according to their slenderness. Thus, second order effects are considered. In optimization, the effect of slenderness can be considered by using the factored design flexural moments. In this paper, harmony search (HS) algorithm is employed to find the optimum design variables of slender RC columns. These design variables are web width, height, diameter and number of reinforcements. The optimization objective is total cost of materials including concrete and steel. The developed method is effective to find the optimal design for axial force, flexural moment and shear force values. As numerical examples, optimum design of columns with different lengths, but with the same loadings and material properties were investigated. Thus, the effect of slenderness was seen on the optimum costs. By the increase of column length, increase of total material cost is more than a linear increase. A simple procedure is proposed for the assessment of reinforced rectangular concrete columns under combined biaxial bending and axial loads and for the design of a correct amount of FRP-strengthening for underdesigned concrete sections. Approximate closed-form equations are developed based on the load contour method originally proposed by Bresler for reinforced concrete sections. The 3D failure surface is approximated along its contours, at a constant axial load, by means of equations given as the sum of the acting/resisting moment ratio in the directions of principal axes of the sections, raised to a power depending on the axial load, the steel reinforcement ratio, and the section shape. The method is extended to FRP-strengthened sections. Moreover, to make it possible to apply the load contour method in a more practical way, simple closed-form equations are developed for rectangular reinforced concrete sections with a two-way steel reinforcement and FRP strengthenings on each side. A comparison between the approach proposed and the fiber method (which is considered exact) shows that the simplified equations correctly represent the section interaction diagram. This paper presents two gradient algorithms applied to the economic optimization of reinforced concrete vaults, typically used in the construction of underpasses. The algorithms are gradient multi start neighbourhood exhaustive search procedures. The vault is defined by 45 design variables and the objective function is an economic one. Both methods have been applied to a vault of 12.40 m of diameter and 3.00 m of lateral walls. Design variables have been coded in base 2 for algorithms GB1 and in Gray coding for GB2. The neighbourhood is defined by the set of solutions that differ in one bit. The Gray coding solves the lack of proximity between two solutions typical of the ordinary binary coding. The positive effect of the Gray coding is proven in the present paper, where the average cost of 3,000 runs of GB2 improves by 3.81% a similar run by algorithm GB1. In addition, GB2 attains the best cost solution. The paper includes a stop criterion for the algorithm based on the stability of the statistics of the multi start results. The algorithms are simple and can be applied to other structural problems. The structure of best cost has a high slenderness and a span to depth ratio of 40. The study reports savings of 6% when compared to a design by an experienced practitioner office.  相似文献

In design of reinforced concrete structures, a ductile design is needed, because the brittle fracture is sudden. Also, the energy absorbed by the structure is effective for ductile structures during earthquake excitations. In design regulations, especially for vertical supporters such as columns, the shear force and axial force capacity is limited, although the strength of the members is not at the limits. For that reason, the shear forces of structures excited by earthquakes can be reduced by adding a tuned mass damper (TMD), but TMD must be optimized and it must not be heavy. If the mass of the TMD is not optimized, the ductile behaviour constraint about the axial force capacity cannot be provided. The compressive strength of the concrete is a measure for the effective application of a TMD to a reinforced concrete structure. Since the mass is limited by the design constraint, the other design variables of TMD such as period and damping ratio are optimized. Using the formulas for frequency and damping ratio related to a preselected mass may not be sufficient and a precise optimum solution for preventing brittle fracture. Metaheuristic methods can be used by using a specific limit. In this study, Teaching Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) is employed to find optimum TMD parameters. Several earthquake excitations were used in the optimization process. A three storey RC frame structures with different compressive strength of concrete is investigated. Three stopping criteria have been used in the proposed methodology. The first criterion is the reduction of the maxi-mum shear force value for the most critical excitation to the ductile behaviour limit. The second criterion is the reduction of the ratio of maximum first storey displacements of structure with and without TMD. This value is reduced under a user defined value, but the user defined value can be entered as zero. This value can be iteratively increased for minimization. The last criterion is the reduction of the acceleration transfer function of the structure. The proposed method is feasible on finding optimum TMD ensuring ductility conditions. The paper presents mathematical models and solution algorithms for RC pile design, through scanning soil stratums from top to downwards with an interactive scanner band. The equilibrium of transferred loads from the superstructure, friction forces and tip bearing forces are considered for the design, which leads to optimum pile length. The most important contribution of this research for designers is supplying an efficient tool to obtain optimum pile length and reinforced concrete design of pile foundation systems. A program package has been developed in MATLAB depending on the proposed algorithm. Soil behaviors depending on external effects, active and passive zone distributions are considered. All possible effects in all freedom degrees are taken into account in design process. Stress and strain distributions due to axial loads, bending moments, shear forces and torsional moments may be monitored. The optimum pile length, cross section dimension and reinforcement details may be found by using developed algorithm.  相似文献

In this paper, a chaos-enhanced bat algorithm is proposed to tackle the global optimization problems. Bat algorithm is a relatively new stochastic optimizer inspired by the echolocation behavior of bats in nature. Due to its effectiveness, it has been applied to many fields such as engineering design, feature selection, and machine learning. However, the classical approach is often prone to falling into local optima. This paper proposes an enhanced bat algorithm to alleviate this problem observed in the original algorithm. The proposed method controls the steps of chaotic mapping by a threshold and synchronizes the velocity of agents using a velocity inertia weight. These mechanisms are designed to boost the stability and convergence speed of the bat algorithm, instantly. Eighteen well-established and the state-of-the-art meta-heuristic approaches are considered to validate the effectiveness of the developed algorithm. Experimental results reveal that the proposed chaos-enhanced bat algorithm is not only superior to the well-established algorithms such as the original method but also the latest improved approaches. Also, the proposed method is successfully applied to I-beam design problems, welded beam design, and pressure vessel design. The results show that chaos-enhanced bat algorithm can deal with unconstrained and constrained feature spaces, effectively.  相似文献

A theoretical and experimental study on the buckling of pultruded columns under an axial load is reported. The tests were carried out on wide-flange (H-shape) and narrow-flange (I-shape) pultruded structural profiles reinforced with glass fibers (GFRP). The aim of the research was to provide more detailed information on the effective buckling behavior, the interaction between local and global buckling, and the type of failure, considering different slenderness ratios, from 9 to 195. We use a gap function in order to compare the torsional performances of different reinforced plates under the action of external forces. Then, we address a shape optimization problem, whose target is to minimize the torsional displacements of the plate: This leads us to set up a minimaxmax problem, which includes a new kind of worst-case optimization. Two kinds of reinforcements are considered: One aims at strengthening the plate and the other aims at weakening the action of the external forces. For both of them, we study the existence of optima within suitable classes of external forces and reinforcements. Our results are complemented with numerical experiments and with a number of open problems and conjectures.  相似文献

The paper deals with evaluation of the bond performance between a CFRP plate and concrete with respect to various compressive strengths of concrete and bond lengths of the CFRP plate as parameters. To consider stress conditions in the tensile zone of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, double-lap axial tension tests were conducted for eight specimens with CFRP plates bonded to concrete prisms. In addition, a simple linear bond-slip model for the CFRP plate/concrete joints, developed from the bond tests, was used. To verify the model proposed, a total of seven RC beams were strengthened with CFRP plates and tested in flexure employing various bond lengths, strengthening methods, and numbers of CFRP plates. A nonlinear finite-element analysis, with the bond–slip model incorporated in the DIANA program, was performed for the strengthened RC beams. Also, the results of flexural test and analytical predictions are found to be in close agreement in terms of yield and ultimate loads and ductility.  相似文献

External confinement by the wrapping of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets is a very effective method for the strengthening and retrofit of round concrete columns. The stability and strength of concrete columns confined by carbon FRP jackets in which the fibers are oriented in the hoop direction was studied. Stability tests were conducted on hinged plain and confined concrete columns of different slenderness. The theoretically predicted critical stress at the on set of in stability was compared with that obtained experimentally, and a good agreement between them was observed. 针对蝙蝠算法易陷入局部最优解的缺点,利用小生境技术对蝙蝠算法进行了改进,提出一种小生境蝙蝠优化算法.算法基于小生境技术的适应度共享来分隔种群,引入了小生境排挤机制来保持种群多样性,在延续蝙蝠算法原有并行搜索等优势的基础上,提高了算法的金局搜索能力和局部收敛速度,具有可在不同邻域内发现多个解的特点.通过对一系列经典函数测试,并与已有算法进行比较,结果表明该算法在函数优化问题的求解中具有较高的计算效率和精度,以及较好的全局寻优能力.  相似文献

This study develops an improved moth-flame optimization algorithm, which is a recently proposed optimizer based on moth behavior in nature. It has achieved favorable results in medical science, educational evaluation, and other fields. However, the convergence rate of the original moth-flame optimization algorithm is too fast in the running process, and it is prone to fall into local optimum, which leads to the failure to produce the high-quality optimal result. Accordingly, this paper proposes a reinforced technique for the moth-flame optimization algorithm. Firstly, the simulated annealing strategy is introduced into the moth-flame optimization algorithm to boost the advantage of the algorithm in the local exploitation process. Then, the idea of the quantum rotation gate is integrated to enhance the global exploration ability of the algorithm and ameliorate the diversity of the moth. These two steps maintain the relationship between exploitation and exploration as well as strengthen the performance of the algorithm in both phases. After that, the method is compared with ten well-regarded and ten alternative algorithms on benchmark functions to verify the effectiveness of the approach. Also, the Wilcoxon signed rank and Friedman assessment were performed to verify the significance of the proposed method against other counterparts. The simulation results reveal that the two introduced strategies significantly improve the exploration and exploitation capacity of moth-flame optimization algorithm. Finally, the algorithm is utilized to feature selection and two engineering problems, including pressure vessel design and multiple disk clutch brake problems. In these practical applications, the novel algorithm also achieves particularly notable results, which also illustrates that the algorithm is qualified is an effective auxiliary appliance in solving complex optimization problems.  相似文献

The external confinement by CFRP wrappings is a very efficient method to increase the load-carrying capacity of round concrete columns. Nevertheless, the serviceability of such columns under loads exceeding the strength of unconfined concrete is limited by different factors. One of them is the reduced stability of the columns due to the significantly reduced tangent elastic modulus inactive loading. To increase the critical load of buckling instability of concrete columns, an additional longitudinal composite reinforcement can be used. In this paper, the stability and strength of concrete columns confined by circumferential wrappings and strengthened with a longitudinal external CFRP reinforcement are studied. Plain and confined columns of length 300 and 1500 mm were tested. Theoretical predictions show that the additional longitudinal reinforcement is efficient in improving the stability of confined columns in the region of moderate slenderness. The shear failure of reinforced concrete beams needs more attention than the bending failure since no or only small warning precedes the failure. For this reason, it is of utmost importance to understand the shear bearing capacity and also to be able to undertake significant rehabilitation work if necessary. In this paper, a design model for the shear strengthening of concrete beams by using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) is presented, and the limitations of the truss model analogy are highlighted. The fracture mechanics approach is used in analyzing the bond behavior between the FRP composites and concrete. The fracture energy of concrete and the axial rigidity of the FRP are considered to be the most important parameters. The effective strain in the FRP when the debonding occurs is determined. The limitations of the anchorage length over the cross section are analyzed. A simple iterative design method for the shear debonding is finally proposed. One of the greatest challenges in structural engineering nowadays is the strengthening, upgrading, and retrofitting of existing structures. The use of fibre-reinforced polymers (FRPs) bonded to the tension face of a structural member is an attractive technique in this field of application. The strengthening of reinforced concrete structures by means of an externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) is achieved by gluing a FRP laminate to the concrete substrate. For an efficient utilization of the FRP EBR systems, an effective stress transfer is required between the FRP and concrete. The paper discusses the bond behaviour between a FRP and concrete in the case of flexural strengthening of continuous beams. With respect to this type of beams, only a few studies have been reported, though continuous members often occur in concrete constructions. The structural behaviour of statically indeterminate elements is typically characterized by redistributions of the internal forces. These distributions are related to the nonlinear deformations of the beams and has also a distinct influence on the bond behaviour between the FRP and concrete. The Set Covering problem (SCP) is a well known combinatorial optimization problem, which is NP-hard. We conducted a comparative study of nine different approximation algorithms for the SCP, including several greedy variants, fractional relaxations, randomized algorithms and a neural network algorithm. The algorithms were tested on a set of random-generated problems with up to 500 rows and 5000 columns, and on two sets of problems originating in combinatorial questions with up to 28160 rows and 11264 columns.On the random problems and on one set of combinatorial problems, the best algorithm among those we tested was a randomized greedy algorithm, with the neural network algorithm very close in second place. On the other set of combinatorial problems, the best algorithm was a deterministic greedy variant, and the randomized algorithms (both randomized greedy and neural network) performed quite poorly. The other algorithms we tested were always inferior to the ones mentioned above.  相似文献

Population-based algorithms have been used in many real-world problems. Bat algorithm(BA) is one of the states of the art of these approaches. Because of the super bat,on the one hand, BA can converge quickly; on the other hand, it is easy to fall into local optimum. Therefore, for typical BA algorithms, the ability of exploration and exploitation is not strong enough and it is hard to find a precise result. In this paper, we propose a novel bat algorithm based on cross boundary learning(CBL) and uniform explosion strategy(UES),namely BABLUE in short, to avoid the above contradiction and achieve both fast convergence and high quality. Different from previous opposition-based learning, the proposed CBL can expand the search area of population and then maintain the ability of global exploration in the process of fast convergence. In order to enhance the ability of local exploitation of the proposed algorithm, we propose UES, which can achieve almost the same search precise as that of firework explosion algorithm but consume less computation resource. BABLUE is tested with numerous experiments on unimodal, multimodal, one-dimensional, high-dimensional and discrete problems, and then compared with other typical intelligent optimization algorithms.The results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms.  相似文献
