Design and synthesis of five new derivatives of benzophenone based imidazole dyes is presented. Synthesized dyes were well characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FT-IR and mass analysis. Dyes contain a secondary acceptor, ESIPT core and different donors forming (D-ESIPT core-A) as basic skeleton in order to study both ESIPT and ICT systematically in this same class of dyes. Dyes without a donor substituent showed ESIPT emission while dyes with a substituted strong donor showed intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) emission. Moreover emission properties of methoxy analogue dyes has been studied to further confirm non-ESIPT emission in dyes without donors and ICT emission in strong donor substituted dyes. All dyes exhibited long range emissions from 392 to 567 nm. Dyes exhibiting ESIPT emission showed negative solvatochromism while ICT emission exhibiting dyes shows positive solvatochromism. ICT and ESIPT characteristics are well correlated with polarity functions plots and Mulliken–Hush analysis. Experimental observations are well supported by TD–DFT and computed energies. The electrophilicity index has been calculated to get details of the stabilities of possible tautomers.  相似文献

Although the organic dyes based on excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism have attracted significant attention, the structure‐property relationship of ESIPT dyes needs to be further exploited. In this paper, three series of ethynyl‐extended regioisomers of 2‐(2′‐hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT), at the 3′‐, 4′‐ and 6‐positions, respectively, have been synthesized. Changes in the absorption and emission spectra were correlated with the position and electronic nature of the substituent groups. Although 4′‐ and 6‐substituted HBT derivatives exhibited absorption bands at longer wavelengths, the keto‐emission of 3′‐substituted HBT derivatives was found at a substantially longer wavelength. The gradual red‐shifted fluorescence emission was found for 3′‐substituted HBT derivatives where the electron‐donating nature of substituent group increased, which was opposite to what was observed for 4′‐ and 6‐substituted HBT derivatives. The results derived from the theoretical calculations were in conformity with the experimental observations. Our study could potentially provide experimental and theoretical basis for designing novel ESIPT dyes that possess unique fluorescent properties.  相似文献

Fluorescent amphiphilic benzoxazole derivatives were synthesized and used to produce photoactive phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomes by reserve-phase evaporation. The dyes absorbed in the UV region and were fluorescent in the blue-green region (determined by solvent polarity). The alkyl chain length seemed to play a fundamental role in the photophysics of the benzoxazole fluorophore in reverse liposomes, and despite the same ESIPT core and phospholipid building block, each amphiphilic dye had a particular emission profile related to the dye location in the liposome. The fluorescence emission spectra from dye 5 showed that its fluorophore experienced a polar environment, due to the single normal emission, while dyes 6–7 had (in part) a normal emission, and the main fluorescent band ascribed to the ESIPT emission indicated a more hydrophobic environment. Despite the complex fluorescent profiles, the benzoxazole derivatives could be successfully introduced into the reverse liposome structure due to the interaction between the alkyl chain and PC bilayer.  相似文献

Fluorescent probes for sensing fundamental properties of biomolecular environment, such as polarity and hydration, help to study assembly of lipids into biomembranes, sensing interactions of biomolecules and imaging physiological state of the cells. Here, we summarize major efforts in the development of probes based on two photophysical mechanisms: (i) an excited-state intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), which is represented by fluorescent solvatochromic dyes that shift their emission band maximum as a function of environment polarity and hydration; (ii) excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), with particular focus on 5-membered cyclic systems, represented by 3-hydroxyflavones, because they exhibit dual emission sensitive to the environment. For both ICT and ESIPT dyes, the design of the probes and their biological applications are summarized. Thus, dyes bearing amphiphilic anchors target lipid membranes and report their lipid organization, while targeting ligands direct them to specific organelles for sensing their local environment. The labels, amino acid and nucleic acid analogues inserted into biomolecules enable monitoring their interactions with membranes, proteins and nucleic acids. While ICT probes are relatively simple and robust environment-sensitive probes, ESIPT probes feature high information content due their dual emission. They constitute a powerful toolbox for addressing multitude of biological questions.  相似文献

Internal Stark effect (or internal electrochromy) consists of the shift of light absorption and emission bands under the influence of electric field produced by proximal charges. In the studies of 3-hydroxyflavone (3HF) derivatives exhibiting the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), we describe a new phenomenon - a very strong internal electrochromic modulation of this reaction. Fluorescence spectra of 3HF derivatives with charged groups attached to the chromophore from the opposite sides without pi-electronic conjugation, N-[(4'-diethylamino)-3-hydroxy-6-flavonyl]methyl-N,N-dimethyloctylammonium bromide and 4-[4-[4'-(3-hydroxyflavonyl)]piperazino]-1-(3-sulfopropyl)pyridinium, were compared with those of their neutral analogues in a series of representative solvents. The introduction of the proximal charge results in shifts of absorption spectrum and of both normal (N) and tautomer (T) emission bands, which correspond to initial and phototautomer states of the ESIPT reaction. The observed shifts are in accordance with the Stark effect theory. The direction of the shift depends on the position of the proximal charge with respect to the chromophore. The magnitude of the shift depends strongly on the solvent dielectric constant and on screening or unscreening produced by addition of the hydrophobic salts. In all of these cases, the spectral shifts are accompanied by extremely strong variations of relative intensities of N and T emission bands. This signifies a strong influence of internal electric field on the ESIPT reaction, which produces a dramatic change of emission color. Thus, the coupling of the initial electrochromic sensory signal with the ESIPT reaction allows for the breaking of the limit in magnitude of response inherent to common electrochromic dyes. This suggests a new principle of designing the ultrasensitive electrochromic two-wavelength fluorescence sensors and probes for analytical chemistry, macromolecular science, and cellular biology.  相似文献

Donor-substituted 2-(2'-arylsulfonamidophenyl)benzimidazoles undergo efficient excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) upon photoexcitation. The tautomer emission energy depends strongly on the substituent attachment position on the fluorophore pi-system. While substitution with a donor group in the para-position relative to the sulfonamide moiety yields an emission energy that is red-shifted relative to the unsubstituted fluorophore, fluorescence of the meta-substituted derivative appears blue-shifted. To elucidate the origin of the surprisingly divergent emission shifts, we performed detailed photophysical and quantum chemical studies with a series of methoxy- and pyrrole-substituted derivatives. The nature and contribution of solvent-solute interactions on the emission properties were analyzed on the basis of solvatochromic shift data using Onsager's reaction field model, Reichardt's empirical solvent polarity scale ET(30), as well as Kamlet-Abboud-Taft's empirical solvent index. The studies revealed that all ESIPT tautomers emit from a moderately polarized excited-state whose dipole moment is not strongly influenced by the donor-attachment position. Furthermore, the negative solvatochromic shift behavior was most pronounced in protic solvents presumably due to specific hydrogen-bonding interactions. The extrapolated gas-phase emission energies correlated qualitatively well with the trends in Stokes shifts, suggesting that solute-solvent interactions do not play a significant role in explaining the divergent emission energy shifts. Detailed quantum chemical calculations not only confirmed the moderately polarized nature of the ESIPT tautomers but also provided a rational for the observed emission shifts based on the differential change in the HOMO and LUMO energies. The results gained from this study should provide guidelines for tuning the emission properties of this class of ESIPT fluorophores with potential applications in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or materials science.  相似文献

New derivatives of 3-hydroxyquinolone (3HQ) with a fused benzene ring (3-hydroxybenzo[g]quinolones) have been synthesized. They display a remarkable red shift of their absorption spectrum in comparison with other 3HQ analogs allowing their excitation by common He/Cd and Ar-ion lasers. As a result of their irreversible excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction, they display a dual fluorescence in a series of solvents of varying polarities, starting from toluene to methanol. The dual emission of these dyes correlates well with solvent H-bond basicity, which is connected with the effect of this solvent property on the kinetics of the ESIPT reaction. In addition to their red-shifted absorption and fluorescence, these new derivatives show a larger separation of their two emission bands and a more appropriate range of their intensity ratio than the previously synthesized 3HQs. These properties allow an improved ratiometric evaluation of the local H-bond basicity of unknown environments, which will favor future applications of the new dyes in polymer and biological sciences.  相似文献

In this paper, we described the synthesis and characterization of new diphenylethylene bearing imino group. We concentrated particularly on the investigation of the possibility of the excited state intramolecular charge transfer (ESIPT) of the new dyes experimentally and theoretically. The absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of the dyes were determined in various solvents. The results showed that the maximal absorption wavelength of 2‐[(4′‐N,N‐dimethylamino‐diphenylethylene‐4‐ylimino)methyl]phenol ( C1 ) and 4‐[(4′‐N,N‐dimethylamino‐diphenylethylene‐4‐ylimino)methyl]phenol ( C2 ) exhibited almost independence on the solvent polarity. While as contrast, the maximal fluorescence wavelength of the dyes showed somewhat dependence on the solvent polarity. In particular, C1 displayed well‐separated dual fluorescence spectroscopy. The second fluorescence peak was characterized with an "abnormal" fluorescence emission wavelength in aprotic solvents with large Stokes shift (ca. 140 nm in THF), which was much more than normal Stokes shift (ca. 30 nm in THF). This emission spectroscopy could be assigned to ESIPT emission. On the other hand, the ESIPT fluorescence of C1 was much reduced or lost in the protic solvents. While, only normal fluorescence emission was detected in various solvents. Although the absorption maxima of C1 exhibited about 10 nm red‐shift with respect to those of C2 , the normal fluorescence maxima of C1 and C2 were almost identical in various solvents. These results suggested that C1 could undergo ESIPT, but C2 was not able to proceed ESIPT. The molecular geometry optimization of phototautomers in the ground electronic state (S0) was carried out with HF method (Hartree‐Fock) and at DFT level (Density Functional Theory) using B3LYP both, while the CIS was employed to optimize the geometries of the first singlet excited state (S1) of the phototautomers of C1 and C2 respectively. The properties of the ground state and the excited state of the phototautomers of C1 and C2 , including the geometrical parameter, the energy, the frontier orbits, the Mulliken charge and the dipole moment change were performed and compared completely. The data were analyzed further based on our experimental results. Furthermore, the absorption and fluorescence spectra were calculated in theory and compared with the measured ones. The rate constant of internal proton transfer (9.831×1011 s?1) of C1 was much lower than that of salicylidene methylamine ( C3 , 2.045×1015 s?1), which was a typical Schiff base compound and was well demonstrated to undergo ESIPT easily under photoexcitation.  相似文献

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is favored by researchers because of its unique optical properties. However, there are relatively few systematic studies on the effects of changing the electronegativity of atoms on the ESIPT process and photophysical properties. Therefore, we selected a series of benzoxazole isothiocyanate fluorescent dyes (2-HOB, 2-HSB, and 2-HSeB) by theoretical methods, and systematically studied the ESIPT process and photophysical properties by changing the electronegativity of chalcogen atoms. The calculated bond angle, bond length, energy gap, and infrared spectrum analysis show that the order of the strength of intramolecular hydrogen bonding of the three molecules is 2-HOB < 2-HSB < 2-HSeB. Correspondingly, the magnitude of the energy barrier of the potential energy curve is 2-HOB > 2-HSB > 2-HSeB. In addition, the calculated electronic spectrum shows that as the atomic electronegativity decreases, the emission spectrum has a redshift. Therefore, this work will offer certain theoretical guidance for the synthesis and application of new dyes based on ESIPT properties.  相似文献

The electronic transitions occurring in 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)-3-hydroxyflavone (DMAF) and 2-furanyl-3-hydroxychromone (FHC) were investigated using the TDDFT method in aprotic and protic solvents. The solvent effect was incorporated into the calculations via the PCM formalism. The H-bonding between solute and protic solvent was taken into account by considering a molecular complex between these molecules. To examine the effect of the H-bond on the ESIPT reaction, the absorption and emission wavelengths as well as the energies of the different states that intervene during these electronic transitions were calculated in acetonitrile, ethanol and methanol. The calculated positions of the absorption and emission wavelengths in various solvents were in excellent agreement with the experimental spectra, validating our approach. We found that in DMAF, the hydrogen bonding with protic solvents makes the ESIPT reaction energetically unfavourable, which explains the absence of the ESIPT tautomer emission in protic solvents. In contrast, the excited tautomer state of FHC remains energetically favourable in both aprotic and protic solvents. Comparing our calculations with the previously reported time-resolved fluorescence data, the ESIPT reaction of DMAF in aprotic solvents is reversible because the emitting states are energetically close, whereas in FHC, ESIPT is irreversible because the tautomer state is below the corresponding normal state. Therefore, the ESIPT reaction in DMAF is controlled by the relative energies of the excited states (thermodynamic control), while in FHC the ESIPT is controlled probably by the energetic barrier (kinetic control).  相似文献

Highly fluorescent molecules harnessing the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process are promising for a new generation of displays and light sources because they can offer very unique and novel optoelectronic properties which are different from those of conventional fluorescent dyes. To realize innovative ESIPT devices comprising full emission colors over the whole visible region, a molecular design strategy for predictable emission color tuning should be established. Here, we have developed a general strategy for a wide-range spectral tuning of imidazole-based ESIPT materials based on three different strategies--introduction of a nodal plane model, extension of effective conjugation length, and modification of heterocyclic rings. A series of nine ESIPT molecules were designed, synthesized and comprehensively investigated for their characteristic emission properties. All these molecules commonly showed no clear and transparent visible range absorption with no absorption color, but showed different colors of intense photoluminescence over broad visible regions from 450 nm (HPI) to 630 nm (HPNO) depending on their molecular structure. With the aid of density functional theory and time-dependent DFT calculations using M06, wB97XD, and B3LYP parameters with the 6-31G(d,p) basis set, these tuned emission bands of nine emitters were assigned from the stabilized excited state conformations that were derived from modified molecular structures.  相似文献

Functionalized 6,6'-dimethyl-3,3'-dihydroxy-2,2'-bipyridine dyes (BP(OH)(2)) exhibit relatively intense fluorescence from the relaxed excited state formed by excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). Bromo functionalization of (BP(OH)(2)) species followed by palladium(0)-catalyzed reactions allows the connection (via alkyne tethers) of functional groups, such as the singlet-emitter diazaboraindacene (bodipy) group or a chelating module (terpyridine; terpy). The X-ray structure of the terpy-based compound confirms the planarity of the 3,3'-dihydroxy-bipyridine unit. The new dyes exhibit relatively intense emission on the nanosecond timescale when in fluid solution, in the solid state at 298 K, and in rigid glasses at 77 K. In some cases, the excitation wavelength luminescence was observed and attributed to 1) inefficiency of the ESIPT process in particular compounds when not enough vibrational energy is introduced in the Franck-Condon state, which is populated by direct light excitation or 2) the presence of an additional excited state that deactivates to the ground state without undergoing the ESIPT process. For some selected species, the effect of the addition of zinc salts on the absorption and luminescence spectra was investigated. In particular, significant fluorescence changes were observed as a consequence of probable consecutive formation of a 1:1 and 1:2 molecular ratio of ligand/zinc adducts owing to coordination of Zn(II) ions by the bipyridyldiol moieties, except when an additional terpyridine subunit is present. In fact, this latter species preferentially coordinates to the Zn(II) ion in a 1:1 molecular ratio and further inhibits Zn(II) interaction. In the hybrid Bodipy/BP(OH)(2) species, complete energy transfer from the BP(OH)(2) to the bodipy fluorophore occurs, leading to exclusive emission from the lowest-lying bodipy subunit.  相似文献

A few of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) compounds have been discovered for their aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE). To understand the AIEE mechanism, an ESIPT compound BTHPB (N-(4-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-hydroxyphenyl)benzamide) with simple structure was designed and synthesized. BTHPB showed apparent AIEE property and the emission efficiency was observed as high as 0.27 in the aggregates. On the basis of viscochromism experiments and calculations employing the linear coupling model, the restriction of the rotation between the two subunits taken place in ESIPT was considered as the main factor for the AIEE. The micro- and femtosecond transient absorption experiments offered evidence for the considerations. Additionally, we also observed a negative effect of aggregation on the fluorescence emission in the system. So the AIEE of ESIPT compound BTHPB originated from the combination effects of positive and negative factors induced by the aggregation.  相似文献

Herein, the efficient interaction of an environment-sensitive fluorophore that undergoes excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) with DNA has been realized by conjugation of a 3-hydroxychromone (3HC) with polycationic spermine. On binding to a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), the ratio of the two emission bands of the 3HC conjugates changes up to 16-fold, so that emission of the ESIPT product increases dramatically. This suggests an efficient screening of the 3HC fluorophore from the water molecules in the DNA complex, which is probably realized by its intercalation into dsDNA. In sharp contrast, the 3HC conjugates show only moderate changes in the dual emission on binding to a single-stranded DNA (ssDNA), indicating a much higher fluorophore exposure to water at the binding site. Thus, the 3-hydroxychromone fluorophore being conjugated to spermine discriminates the binding of this polycation to dsDNA from that to ssDNA. Consequently, ESIPT-based dyes are promising for monitoring the interaction of polycationic molecules with DNA and probing the microenvironment of their DNA binding sites.  相似文献

The synthesis, structural, and photophysical properties of a new series of original dyes based on 2‐(2′‐hydroxybenzofuran)benzoxazole (HBBO) is reported. Upon photoexcitation, these dyes exhibit intense dual fluorescence with contribution from the enol (E*) and the keto (K*) emission, with K* being formed through excited‐state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). We show that the ratio of emission intensity E*/K* can be fine‐tuned by judiciously decorating the molecular core with electron‐donating or ‐attracting substituents. Push–pull dyes 9 and 10 functionalized by a strong donor (nNBu2) and a strong acceptor group (CF3 and CN, respectively) exhibit intense dual emission, particularly in apolar solvents such as cyclohexane in which the maximum wavelength of the two bands is the more strongly separated. Moreover, all dyes exhibit strong solid‐state dual emission in a KBr matrix and polymer films with enhanced quantum yields reaching up to 54 %. A wise selection of substituents led to white emission both in solution and in the solid state. Finally, these experimental results were analyzed by time‐dependent density functional theory (TD‐DFT) calculations, which confirm that, on the one hand, only E* and K* emission are present (no rotamer) and, on the other hand, the relative free energies of the two tautomers in the excited state guide the ratio of the E*/K* emission intensities.  相似文献

Abstract

Two synthesis strategies were used for the generation of azulene-1-yl diazenes substituted at C-3 with a phenyl-chalcogenyl moiety, the synthesis of azulenes substituted at C-3 followed by azo-coupling and azulene substitution at C-3 in azulene-azo dyes. The last synthetic route seems to give more satisfactory results for the synthesis of the desired chalcogenic derivatives. Another target of this study was to investigate the changes induced by the phenyl-chalcogenic substitution on the NMR and UV-vis spectra, and also to compare this effect with the one exerted by halogen atoms and by strongly electron donating groups such as AcNH or PhCOO. Whereas the latter groups exhibit a strong influence on the NMR and UV-vis spectra, PhS, PhSe, or PhTe groups as well as halogen atoms produce only a small effect because of the moderate change in electron distribution over the entire molecule.  相似文献

3-Hydroxyquinolones undergo excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), resulting in a dual emission highly sensitive to H-bonding perturbations. Here, we report on the strong effect of viscosity on the dual emission of 2-(2-thienyl)-3-hydroxyquinolone in protic solvents. An increase in viscosity significantly decreases the formation of the ESIPT product, thus changing dramatically the ratio of the two emission bands. Time-resolved studies suggest the presence of solvated species characterized by decay times close to the solvent relaxation times in viscous media. The intramolecular H bond in this species is probably disrupted by the solvent, and therefore, its ESIPT requires a reorganization of the solvation shell for restoring this intramolecular H bond. Thus, the ESIPT reaction of this dye and its dual emission depend on solvent relaxation rates and, therefore, on viscosity. The present results suggest a new physical principle for the fluorescence ratiometric measurement of local viscosity.  相似文献

2-(2’-Hydroxyphenyl)benzazole (HBX) fluorophores are well-known excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) emitters largely studied for their synthetic versatility, photostability, strong solid-state fluorescence and ability to engineer dual emission, thus paving the way to applications as white emitters, ratiometric sensors, and cryptographic dyes. However, they are heavily quenched in solution, due to efficient non-radiative pathways taking place as a consequence of the proton transfer in the excited-state. In this contribution, the nature of the heteroring constitutive of these rigidified HBX dyes was modified and we demonstrate that this simple structural modification triggers major optical changes in terms of emission color, dual emission engineering, and importantly, fluorescent quantum yield. Investigation of the photophysical properties in solution and in the solid state of a series of ethynyl-TIPS extended HBX fluorophores, along with ab initio calculations demonstrate the very promising abilities of these dyes to act as bright dual-state emitters, in both solution (even in protic environments) and solid state.  相似文献

3-Hydroxyquinolones (3HQs), similarly to their 3-hydroxychromone analogs, undergo excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) resulting in dual emission. In the ground state, 2-phenyl-3HQ derivatives are not flat due to a steric hindrance between the 2-phenyl group and the 3-OH group that participates in the ESIPT reaction. To study the effect of this steric hindrance on the ESIPT reaction, a number of 3HQ derivatives have been synthesized and characterized in different organic solvents by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence techniques. According to our results, 2-phenyl-3HQ derivatives undergo much faster ESIPT (by nearly 1 order of magnitude) than their 2-methyl-3HQ analogs. Moreover, 1-methyl-2-phenyl-3HQ having a strongly twisted 2-phenyl group undergoes a two- to three-fold slower ESIPT compared to 2-phenyl-3HQ. These results suggest that the flatter conformation of 2-phenyl-3HQ, which allows a close proximity of the 2-phenyl and 3-OH groups, favors a fast ESIPT reaction. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of the 3HQ derivatives additionally confirm that the steric rather than the electronic effect of the 2-phenyl group is responsible for the faster ESIPT reaction. Based on the spectroscopic studies and quantum chemical calculations, we suggest that the 2-phenyl group decreases the rotational freedom of its proximal 3-OH group in the more planar conformation of 2-phenyl-3HQ. As a result, the conformations of 3HQ, where the 3-OH group orients to form an intramolecular H-bond with the 4-carbonyl group, are favored over those with a disrupted intramolecular H-bond. Therefore, the 2-phenyl group sterically favors the intramolecular H-bond and thus accelerates the ESIPT reaction. This conclusion provides a new understanding of the ESIPT process in 3-hydroxyquinolones and related systems and suggests new possibilities for the design of ESIPT based molecular sensors and switchers.  相似文献

A new class of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) dyes based on a 1,3-bis(imino)isoindole diol motif has been prepared. These molecules exhibit orange emission (~600 nm) with a large apparent Stokes shift (>6000 cm(-1)) and quantum efficiencies up to 45%. Selective modification of the substituents can be used to shift the equilibrium between the enol and keto forms of the molecule in both the ground and excited states.  相似文献
