A Kolmogorov-type cascade of Kelvin waves-the distortion waves on vortex lines-plays a key part in the relaxation of superfluid turbulence at low temperatures. We propose an efficient numeric scheme for simulating the Kelvin-wave cascade on a single vortex line. This idea is likely to be generalizable for a full-scale simulation of different regimes of superfluid turbulence. With the new scheme, we are able to unambiguously resolve the cascade spectrum exponent, and thus to settle the controversy between recent simulations of Vinen, Tsubota, and Mitani [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 135301 (2003)]] and recently developed analytic theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 035301 (2004)]].  相似文献

We extend the off-diagonal geometric phase [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3067 (2000)]] to mixed quantal states. The nodal structure of this phase in the qubit (two-level) case is compared with that of the diagonal mixed state geometric phase [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2845 (2000)]]. Extension to higher dimensional Hilbert spaces is delineated. A physical scenario for the off-diagonal mixed state geometric phase in polarization-entangled two-photon interferometry is proposed.  相似文献

We present an experimental demonstration of both quadrature and polarization entanglement generated via the interaction between a coherent linearly polarized field and cold atoms in a high finesse optical cavity. The nonlinear atom-field interaction produces two squeezed modes with orthogonal polarizations which are used to generate a pair of nonseparable beams, the entanglement of which is demonstrated by checking the inseparability criterion for continuous variables recently derived by Duan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2722 (2000)]] and calculating the entanglement of formation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 107901 (2003)]].  相似文献

A microstructural theory of dense granular materials is presented, based on two main ideas: first, that macroscopic shear results from activated local rearrangements at a mesoscopic scale; second, that the update frequency of microscopic processes is determined by granular temperature. In a shear cell, the resulting constitutive equations account for Bagnold's scaling and for the existence of a Coulomb criterion. In a granular flow down an inclined plane, they account for the rheology observed in experiments [Phys. Fluids 11, 542 (1999)]] and for temperature and velocity profiles measured numerically [Europhys. Lett. 56, 214 (2001)]] [Phys. Rev. E 64, 051302 (2001)]].  相似文献

In this Letter we experimentally implement a single photon Bell test based on the ideas of S. Tan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 252 (1991)]] and L. Hardy [Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, 2279 (1994)]]. A double homodyne measurement is used to measure correlations in the Fock space spanned by zero and one photons. Local oscillators used in the correlation measurement are distributed to two observers by copropagating it in an orthogonal polarization mode. This method eliminates the need for interferometrical stability in the setup, consequently making it a robust and scalable method.  相似文献

A new universal scaling law relating the self-diffusivities of the components of a binary fluid mixture to their excess entropies is derived using mode coupling theory. These scaling laws yield numerical results, for a hard sphere as well as Lennard-Jones fluid mixtures, in excellent agreement with simulation results even at a low density region, where the empirical scaling laws of Dzugutov [Nature (London) 381, 137 (1996)]] and Hoyt, Asta, and Sadigh [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 594 (2001)]] fail completely. A new scaling law relating the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy to the excess entropy is also obtained.  相似文献

We evaluate the frequencies of collective modes and the anisotropic expansion rate of a harmonically trapped Fermi superfluid at varying coupling strengths across a Feshbach resonance driving a BCS-BEC crossover. The equations of motion for the superfluid are obtained from a microscopic mean-field expression for the compressibility and are solved within a scaling ansatz. Our results confirm nonmonotonic behavior in the crossover region and are in quantitative agreement with current measurements of the transverse breathing mode by Kinast et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 150402 (2004)]] and of the axial breathing mode by Bartenstein et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 203201 (2004)]].  相似文献

The study of the anisotropic superconductor MgB2 using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy reveals two distinct energy gaps at Delta(1)=2.3 meV and Delta(2)=7.1 meV at 4.2 K. Different spectral weights of the partial superconducting density of states are a reflection of different tunneling directions in this multiband system. Temperature evolution of the tunneling spectra follows the BCS scenario [Phys. Rev. Lett. 3, 552 (1959)]] with both gaps vanishing at the bulk T(c). The data confirm the importance of Fermi-surface sheet dependent superconductivity in MgB2 proposed in the multigap model by Liu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 087005 (2001)]].  相似文献

Calculations are presented for the double photoionization (with excitation) and triple photoionization of the Li atom. The motion of all three electrons is treated equally by solving the time-dependent Schr?dinger equation in nine dimensions. A radial lattice is used to represent three of the nine dimensions, while a coupled channel expansion is used to represent the other six dimensions. Probabilities for photoionization are obtained by t--> infinity projection onto fully antisymmetric spatial and spin functions. Double photoionization cross sections for lithium leaving the ion in the 1s, 2s, and 2p states are presented. Good agreement is found with the measurements of Huang et al. [Phys. Rev. A 59, 3397 (1999)]] for the total double photoionization cross section and with the measurements of Wehlitz et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1813 (1998)]] for the triple photoionization cross section.  相似文献

High-convergence implosion experiments have been performed on the Omega laser facility [T.R. Boehly, Opt. Commun. 133, 495 (1997)]] using cylindrical gold hohlraums with 40 drive beams arranged into multiple cones. These experiments make use of improved hohlraum radiation symmetry conditions [T.J. Murphy, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 108 (1998)]] to demonstrate near predicted primary (2.45 MeV) neutron production from single-shell implosions with measured deuterium fuel convergence ratios exceeding 20 at an ignition-relevant hohlraum case-to-capsule ratio approximately 3.  相似文献

We study current fluctuations in lattice gases in the macroscopic limit extending the dynamic approach for density fluctuations developed in previous articles. More precisely, we establish a large deviation theory for the space-time fluctuations of the empirical current which include the previous results. We then estimate the probability of a fluctuation of the average current over a large time interval. It turns out that recent results by Bodineau and Derrida [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 180601 (2004)]] in certain cases underestimate this probability due to the occurrence of dynamical phase transitions.  相似文献

We report the experimental transformation of quadrature entanglement between two optical beams into continuous variable polarization entanglement. We extend the inseparability criterion proposed by Duan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2722 (2000)]] to polarization states and use it to quantify the entanglement. We propose an elaboration utilizing two quadrature entangled pairs for which all three Stokes operators between a pair of beams are entangled.  相似文献

To lowest order in the coupling strength, the spin-orbit coupling in quantum dots results in a spin-dependent Aharonov-Bohm flux. This flux decouples the spin-up and spin-down random matrix theory ensembles of the quantum dot. We employ this ensemble and find significant changes in the distribution of the Coulomb blockade peak height, in particular, a decrease of the width of the distribution. The puzzling disagreement between standard random matrix theory and the experimental distributions by Patel et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 5900 (1998)]] might possibly be attributed to these spin-orbit effects.  相似文献

In this Letter, we report a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study aiming to explore the adsorption properties of Au with respect to the thickness of supported MgO films. For different MgO film thicknesses (3 ML and 8 ML), we find significant differences in the distribution of Au adsorption sites and in the Au cluster geometry, in line with recent calculations and electron paramagnetic resonance experiments. On the surface of thick MgO films or unsupported MgO, Au adsorbs on O sites [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 146804 (2006)], and the equilibrium cluster geometry is three-dimensional. In contrast, on thin MgO films, the calculations predicted (i) a change of the preferred Au nucleation site [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 226104 (2005)] and (ii) a stabilization of two-dimensional Au cluster geometries [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 036106 (2006)].  相似文献

Recent scaling results for the ac conductivity of ionic glasses by Roling et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2160 (1997)] and Sidebottom [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 3653 (1999)] are discussed. We prove that Sidebottom's version of scaling is completely general. A new approximation to the universal ac conductivity arising in the extreme disorder limit of the symmetric hopping model, the "diffusion cluster approximation," is presented and compared to computer simulations and experiments.  相似文献

Atomic-physics calculations of radiative cooling are used to develop criteria for the overstability of radiating shocks. Our calculations explain the measurement of shock overstability by Grun et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 2738 (1991)]] and explain why the overstability was not observed in other experiments. The methodology described here can be especially useful in astrophysical situations where the relevant properties leading to an overstability can be measured spectroscopically, but the effective adiabatic index is harder to determine.  相似文献

We present a generalization of the classical Wang-Landau algorithm [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2050 (2001)]] to quantum systems. The algorithm proceeds by stochastically evaluating the coefficients of a high temperature series expansion or a finite temperature perturbation expansion to arbitrary order. Similar to their classical counterpart, the algorithms are efficient at thermal and quantum phase transitions, greatly reducing the tunneling problem at first order phase transitions, and allow the direct calculation of the free energy and entropy.  相似文献

Most tokamak experimental results [Nucl. Fusion 33, 1205 (1993)]] and basic physics experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 095001 (2002)]] in the Columbia Linear Machine indicate dependence of the ion thermal conductivity on the isotopic mass close to chi( perpendicular ) approximately A(-0.5)(i), i.e., inverse gyro-Bohm. This is in stark contradiction to most present theoretical models predicting Bohm (A(0)(i)) or gyro-Bohm (A(0.5)(i)) scaling. A series of experiments designed to explore the physics basis of this scaling appears to lead to a new model for this scaling based on 3-wave coupling of two ion temperature gradient radial harmonics and an ion acoustic wave.  相似文献

Recent experiments [R. A. Gray, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 168104 (2001)]] have revealed striking standing wave patterns in cardiac muscle. In excitable media, such as cardiac tissue where colliding waves annihilate, standing wave patterns result from a fully nonlinear mechanism. We present a possible physical mechanism explaining these patterns. The phenomenon does not depend on the precise excitable model chosen. Analogies are drawn with weak links in superconductors, and phase-slip solutions in the Ginzburg-Landau equations.  相似文献

It is demonstrated theoretically that the counter-rotating quadrupole mode in a vortex of Bose-Einstein condensates can decay into a pair of Kelvin modes via the Beliaev process. We calculate the spectral weight of a density-response function within the Bogoliubov framework, taking account of both Beliaev and Landau processes. Good agreement with experiment on 87 Rb by Bretin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 100403 (2003)]] allows us to unambiguously identify the decayed mode as the Kelvin wave propagating along a vortex line.  相似文献
