While it has long been a practice to place spires near the inlet of a wind tunnel to quickly develop a turbulent boundary layer with similarities to an atmospheric boundary layer, this has not been the case for creating turbulent boundary layer inflow in large eddy simulations (LESs) of turbulent flows. We carry out LES with the curvilinear immersed boundary method to simulate the flow in a wind tunnel with a series of spires in order to investigate the feasibility of numerically developing inflow conditions from a precursory spire LES and assessing the similarities of the turbulence statistics to those of an atmospheric boundary layer. The simulated mean velocity field demonstrates that a turbulent boundary layer with height equal to the spire height develops very quickly, within five spire heights downstream. The major attribute of using spires for precursory simulations is the spatially evolving coherent structures that form downstream of the spires offering a range of length scales at both the vertical and streamwise directions allowing multiple turbulent inflow conditions to be extracted from a single simulation. While the distribution of length scales far from the spires resembles an atmospheric boundary layer, some turbulence statistics have some significant differences.  相似文献

Large eddy simulations (LES) of turbulent non-premixed swirling flames based on the Sydney swirl burner experiments under different flame characteristics are used to uncover the underlying instability modes responsible for the centre jet precession and large scale recirculation zone. The selected flame series known as SMH flames have a fuel mixture of methane-hydrogen (50:50 by volume). The LES solves the governing equations on a structured Cartesian grid using a finite volume method, with turbulence and combustion modelling based on the localised dynamic Smagorinsky model and the steady laminar flamelet model respectively. The LES results are validated against experimental measurements and overall the LES yields good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the experimental observations. Analysis showed that the LES predicted two types of instability modes near fuel jet region and bluff body stabilised recirculation zone region. The mode I instability defined as cyclic precession of a centre jet is identified using the time periodicity of the centre jet in flames SMH1 and SMH2 and the mode II instability defined as cyclic expansion and collapse of the recirculation zone is identified using the time periodicity of the recirculation zone in flame SMH3. Finally frequency spectra obtained from the LES are found to be in good agreement with the experimentally observed precession frequencies.  相似文献

We examine the role of visualisation in the context of LES simulations of premixed turbulent combustion. The physical processes involved in premixed turbulent combustion are extremely complex, and the modelling of both the turbulence (via LES) and the combustion (via flame-wrinkling models) is difficult. Appropriate visualisation is required to understand the behaviour of the models, and ultimately to understand better the flow processes which are important in many industrial applications. We examine visualisations of two specific cases; simple flame kernel growth in a box of turbulence, and combustion behind a backward-facing step. A number of visualisation techniques are used to produce results that are similar to experimentally determined Schlieren and Mie photography for the flame kernel. In addition, isosurfaces of the reaction regress variable coloured by the laminar flame speed and sub-grid wrinkling are also plotted in an attempt to gain deeper insight into the physics of turbulent combustion in the context of these particular cases. Finally we discuss the role of the WWW in the continuing development of scientific visualisation techniques.  相似文献

Much progress has been made in radiative heat transfer modelling with respect to the treatment of nongrey radiation from both gas-phase species and soot particles, while radiation modelling in turbulent flame simulations is still in its infancy. Aiming at reducing this gap, this paper introduces state-of-the-art models of gas-phase and soot radiation to turbulent flame simulations. The full-spectrum k-distribution method (M.F. Modest, 2003, Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy & Radiative Transfer, 76, 69–83) is implemented into a three-dimensional unstructured computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code for nongrey radiation modelling. The mixture full-spectrum k-distributions including nongrey absorbing soot particles are constructed from a narrow-band k-distribution database created for individual gas-phase species, and an efficient scheme is employed for their construction in CFD simulations. A detailed reaction mechanism including NO x and soot kinetics is used to predict flame structure, and a detailed soot model using a method of moments is employed to determine soot particle size distributions. A spherical harmonic P1 approximation is invoked to solve the radiative transfer equation. An oxygen-enriched, turbulent, nonpremixed jet flame is simulated, which features large concentrations of gas-phase radiating species and soot particles. Nongrey soot modelling is shown to be of greater importance than nongrey gas modelling in sooty flame simulations, with grey soot models producing large errors. The nongrey treatment of soot strongly influences flame temperatures in the upstream and the flame-tip region and is essential for accurate predictions of NO. The nongrey treatment of gases, however, weakly influences upstream flame temperatures and, therefore, has only a small effect on NO predictions. The effect of nongrey soot radiation on flame temperature is also substantial in downstream regions where the soot concentration is small. Limitations of the P1 approximation are discussed for the jet flame configuration; the P1 approximation yields large errors in the spatial distribution of the computed radiative heat flux for highly anisotropic radiation fields such as those in flames with localized, near-opaque soot regions.  相似文献

This paper presents an assessment of Large Eddy Simulations (LES) in calculating the structure of turbulent premixed flames propagating past solid obstacles. One objective of the present study is to evaluate the LES simulations and identify the drawbacks in accounting the chemical reaction rate. Another objective is to analyse the flame structure and to calculate flame speed, generated overpressure at different time intervals following ignition of a stoichiometric propane/air mixture. The combustion chamber has built-in repeated solid obstructions to enhance the turbulence level and hence increase the flame propagating speed. Various numerical tests have also been carried out to determine the regimes of combustion at different stages of the flame propagation. These have been identified from the calculated results for the flow and flame characteristic parameters. It is found that the flame lies within the ‘thin reaction zone’ regime which supports the use of the laminar flamelet approach for modelling turbulent premixed flames. A submodel to calculate the model coefficient in the algebraic flame surface density model is implemented and examined. It is found that the LES predictions are slightly improved owing to the calculation of model coefficient by using submodel. Results are presented and discussed in this paper are for the flame structure, position, speed, generated pressure and the regimes of combustion during all stages of flame propagation from ignition to venting. The calculated results are validated against available experimental data.  相似文献

The numerical modelling of alkali metal reacting dynamics in turbulent pulverised-coal combustion is discussed using tabulated sodium chemistry in large eddy simulation (LES). A lookup table is constructed from a detailed sodium chemistry mechanism including five sodium species, i.e. Na, NaO, NaO2, NaOH and Na2O2H2, and 24 elementary reactions. This sodium chemistry table contains four coordinates, i.e. the equivalence ratio, the mass fraction of the sodium element, the gas-phase temperature, and a progress variable. The table is first validated against the detailed sodium chemistry mechanism by zero-dimensional simulations. Then, LES of a turbulent pulverised-coal jet flame is performed and major coal-flame parameters compared against experiments. The chemical percolation devolatilisation (CPD) model and the partially stirred reactor (PaSR) model are employed to predict coal pyrolysis and gas-phase combustion, respectively. The response of the five sodium species in the pulverised-coal jet flame is subsequently examined. Finally, a systematic global sensitivity analysis of the sodium lookup table is performed and the accuracy of the proposed tabulated sodium chemistry approach has been calibrated.  相似文献

A posteriori analysis of the statistics of two large-eddy simulation (LES) solutions describing a piloted methane–air (Sandia D) flame is performed on a series of grids with progressively increased resolution reaching about 10.5 million cells. Chemical compositions, density and temperature fields are modelled with a steady flamelet approach and parametrised by the mixture fraction. The difference between the LES solutions arises from a different numerical treatment of the subgrid scale (SGS) mixture fraction variance – an important quantity of interest in non-premixed combustion modelling. In the first case (model I), the variance transport equation is solved directly, while in the second (model II), an equation for the square of the mixture fraction is solved, and the variance is computed from its definition. The comparison of the LES solutions is based on the convergence properties of their statistics with respect to the turbulence resolution length scale. The dependence of the LES statistics is analysed for velocity and the mixture fraction fields, and tested for convergence. For the most part, the statistics converge for the finest grids, but the variance of the mixture fraction shows some residual grid dependence in the high-gradient regions of the jet near field. The SGS variance given by model I exhibits realisability everywhere, whereas in regions of the flame model II is non-realisable, predicting negative variances. Furthermore, the LES statistics of model I exhibit superior convergence behaviour.  相似文献

The mean structure of turbulent bluff-body jets and flames is presented. Measurements of the flow and mixing fields are compared with predictions made using standard turbulence models. It is found that two vortices exist in the recirculation zone; an outer vortex close to the air coflow and an inner vortex between the outer vortex and the jet. The inner vortex is found to shift downstream with increasing jet momentum flux relative to the coflow momentum flux and gradually loses its circulation pattern. The momentum flux ratio of the jet to the coflow in isothermal flows is found to be the only scaling parameter for the flow field structure. Three mixing layers are identified in the recirculation zone. Numerical simulations using the standard k-? and Reynolds stress turbulence models underpredict the length of the recirculation zone. A simple modification to the C1 constant in the dissipation transport equation fixes this deficiency and gives better predictions of the flow and mixing fields. The mixed-is-burnt combustion model is found to be adequate for simulating the temperature and mixing field in the recirculation zone of the bluff-body flames.  相似文献

A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model capable of accurately representing finite-rate chemistry effects in turbulent premixed combustion is presented. The LES computations use finite-rate chemistry and implicit LES combustion modelling to simulate an experimentally well-documented lean-premixed jet flame stabilized by a stoichiometric pilot. The validity of the implicit LES assumption is discussed and criteria are expressed in terms of subgrid scale Damköhler and Karlovitz numbers. Simulation results are compared to experimental data for velocity, temperature and species mass fractions of CH4, CO and OH. The simulation results highlight the validity and capability of the present approach for the flame and in general the combustion regime examined. A sensitivity analysis to the choice of the finite-rate chemistry mechanism is reported, this analysis indicates that the one and two-step global reaction mechanisms evaluated fail to capture the reaction layer with sufficient accuracy, while a 20-species skeletal mechanism reproduces the experimental observations accurately including the key finite-rate chemistry indicators CO and OH. The LES results are shown to be grid insensitive and that the grid resolution within the bounds examined is far less important compared to the sensitivity of the finite-rate chemistry representation. The results are analyzed in terms of the flame dynamics and it is shown that intense small scale mixing (high Karlovitz number) between the pilot and the jet is an important mechanism for the stabilization of the flame.  相似文献

The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) / Conditional Moment Closure (CMC) model with detailed chemistry is used for modelling spark ignition and flame propagation in a turbulent methane jet in ambient air. Two centerline and one off-axis ignition locations are simulated. We focus on predicting the flame kernel formation, flame edge propagation and stabilization. The current LES/CMC computations capture the three stages reasonably well compared to available experimental data. Regarding the formation of flame kernel, it is found that the convection dominates the propagation of its downstream edge. The simulated initial downstream and radial flame propagation compare well with OH-PLIF images from the experiment. Additionally, when the spark is deposited at off-centerline locations, the flame first propagates downstream and then back upstream from the other side of the stoichiometric iso-surface. At the leading edge location, the chemical source term is larger than others in magnitude, indicating its role in the flame propagation. The time evolution of flame edge position and the final lift-off height are compared with measurements and generally good agreement is observed. The conditional quantities at the stabilization point reflect a balance between chemistry and micro-mixing. This investigation, which focused on model validation for various stages of spark ignition of a turbulent lifted jet flame through comparison with measurements, demonstrates that turbulent edge flame propagation in non-premixed systems can be reasonably well captured by LES/CMC.  相似文献

The development of the unburned gas flow field ahead of a flame front in an obstructed channel was investigated using large eddy simulation (LES). The standard Smagorinsky–Lilly and dynamic Smagorinsky–Lilly subgrid models were used in these simulations. The geometry is essentially two-dimensional. The fence-type obstacles were placed on the top and bottom surfaces of a square cross-section channel, equally spaced along the channel length at the channel height. The laminar rollup of a vortex downstream of each obstacle, transition to turbulence, and growth of a recirculation zone between consecutive obstacles were observed in the simulations. By restricting the simulations to the early stages of the flame acceleration and by varying the domain width and domain length, the three-dimensionality of the vortex rollup process was investigated. It was found that initially the rollup process was two-dimensional and unaffected by the domain length and width. As the recirculation zone grew to fill the streamwise gap between obstacles, the length and width of the computational domain started to affect the simulation results. Three-dimensional flow structures formed within the shear layer, which was generated near the obstacle tips, and the core flow was affected by large-scale turbulence. The simulation predictions were compared to experimental schlieren images of the convection of helium tracer. The development of recirculation zones resulted in the formation of contraction and expansion regions near the obstacles, which significantly affected the centerline gas velocity. Oscillations in the centerline unburned gas velocity were found to be the dominate cause for the experimentally observed early flame-tip velocity oscillations. At later simulation times, regular oscillations in the unburned streamwise gas velocity were not observed, which is contrary to the experimental evidence. This suggests that fluctuations in the burning rate might be the source of the late flame-tip velocity oscillations. The effect of the obstacle blockage ratio (BR) on the development of the unburned gas flow field was also investigated by varying the obstacle height. Simulation predictions show favorable agreement with the experimental results and indicate that turbulence production increases with increasing obstacle BR.  相似文献

A premixed propane–air flame stabilised on a triangular bluff body in a model jet-engine afterburner configuration is investigated using large-eddy simulation (LES). The reaction rate source term for turbulent premixed combustion is closed using the transported flame surface density (TFSD) model. In this approach, there is no need to assume local equilibrium between the generation and destruction of subgrid FSD, as commonly done in simple algebraic closure models. Instead, the key processes that create and destroy FSD are accounted for explicitly. This allows the model to capture large-scale unsteady flame propagation in the presence of combustion instabilities, or in situations where the flame encounters progressive wrinkling with time. In this study, comprehensive validation of the numerical method is carried out. For the non-reacting flow, good agreement for both the time-averaged and root-mean-square velocity fields are obtained, and the Karman type vortex shedding behaviour seen in the experiment is well represented. For the reacting flow, two mesh configurations are used to investigate the sensitivity of the LES results to the numerical resolution. Profiles for the velocity and temperature fields exhibit good agreement with the experimental data for both the coarse and dense mesh. This demonstrates the capability of LES coupled with the TFSD approach in representing the highly unsteady premixed combustion observed in this configuration. The instantaneous flow pattern and turbulent flame behaviour are discussed, and the differences between the non-reacting and reacting flow are described through visualisation of vortical structures and their interaction with the flame. Lastly, the generation and destruction of FSD are evaluated by examining the individual terms in the FSD transport equation. Localised regions where straining, curvature and propagation are each dominant are observed, highlighting the importance of non-equilibrium effects of FSD generation and destruction in the model afterburner.  相似文献

Reactive flow simulations using large-eddy simulations (LES) require modelling of sub-filter fluctuations. Although conserved scalars like mixture fraction can be represented using a beta-function, the reactive scalar probability density function (PDF) does not follow an universal shape. A one-point one-time joint composition PDF transport equation can be used to describe the evolution of the scalar PDF. The high-dimensional nature of this PDF transport equation requires the use of a statistical ensemble of notional particles and is directly coupled to the LES flow solver. However, the large grid sizes used in LES simulations will make such Lagrangian simulations computationally intractable. Here we propose the use of a Eulerian version of the transported-PDF scheme for simulating turbulent reactive flows. The direct quadrature method of moments (DQMOM) uses scalar-type equations with appropriate source terms to evolve the sub-filter PDF in terms of a finite number of delta-functions. Each delta-peak is characterized by a location and weight that are obtained from individual transport equations. To illustrate the feasibility of the scheme, we compare the model against a particle-based Lagrangian scheme and a presumed PDF model for the evolution of the mixture fraction PDF. All these models are applied to an experimental bluff-body flame and the simulated scalar and flow fields are compared with experimental data. The DQMOM model results show good agreement with the experimental data as well as the other sub-filter models used.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of kerosene spray combustion in an axial-swirl combustor have been carried out focusing on the effect of the evaporating droplets on the flame temperature and species concentrations. The LES-PDF methodology is used for both dispersed (liquid) and gas phases. The liquid phase is described using a Lagrangian formulation whilst an Eulerian approach is employed for the gas phase. The predictive capability of LES with sub-grid scale models for spray dispersion and evaporation is assessed placing emphasis on the effect of the unresolved velocity and temperature fields on the droplet evaporation rate. The results of the fully coupled LES formulation exhibit good agreement between the measured and simulated mean velocity fields. The global behaviour of the spray combustion, such as droplet dispersion and evaporation, are captured reasonably well in the simulations. It was found that the large velocity fluctuations observed in the shear layer strongly affect the evaporation rate and thus the temperature distributions. The present work also demonstrated the feasibility of LES to study complex flow features which are typical of gas-turbine combustion chambers.  相似文献

This study reports results from experimental and numerical investigations of a partially premixed turbulent opposed methane/air jet flame. Experimentally determined properties of the scalar and the flow field are compared to the results from a Monte Carlo simulation. One-dimensional spatially resolved Raman/Rayleigh scattering serves to quantify the mean species concentrations and temperature, whereas laser Doppler velocimetry is used to measure axial and radial velocity components. The simulation is simplified by using a one-dimensional formulation. It includes a Reynolds-stress turbulence model and a Monte Carlo simulation of the joint scalar probability density function (PDF). A non-uniform Monte Carlo particle distribution is used to minimize stochastic errors. The flame is operated close to extinction with strong interactions between turbulence and chemistry. Comparisons between experimental and numerical results reveal a good agreement of mixture fraction profiles along the centreline. However, species scatter plots and mixture fraction PDFs show discrepancies between experiment and simulation. Numerical simulations over-predict the extinction limits and therefore under-predict the intermittent nature of turbulence and mixing of the scalars.  相似文献

A turbulent combustion model, Conditional Source-term Estimation (CSE) is applied to a non-premixed turbulent jet methane flame. The conditional chemical source terms are determined on the basis of first order closure and the conditional averaged species concentrations are obtained by inverting an integral equation. The Tikhonov method is implemented for regularisation. Detailed chemistry is tabulated using the trajectory generated low-dimensional manifold method. Radiation due to the gaseous species is included. Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes calculations are performed using two different turbulence models. The objectives of the paper are (i) assessment of the impact of the main numerical parameters in CSE and (ii) comparison of the CSE numerical predictions with available experimental data and results from previous simulations for the selected flame. The number of CSE domains and the number of points in each CSE domain are shown to have a significant impact on the results if not selected appropriately. The present CSE calculations always converge to unique and stable predictions. The corrected k–ε model yields mixture fraction profiles in good agreement with the experimental data values for axial locations in the first half of the flame. Farther downstream, the RNG k–ε model performs better. Overall, the current predictions for the mixture fraction are in good agreement with the experimental data. The predicted temperatures using CSE and the k–ε turbulence model with a modified value of Cε1 = 1.47 are found to be in very good agreement with the experimental data. Further, the current CSE results are of comparable quality with previous simulations using the flamelet model and conditional moment closure. Future work may include further investigation on optimal determination of the regularisation parameter and alternative regularisation techniques, soot modelling within the CSE formulation, and improved formulation of radiation.  相似文献

High-speed planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) and 3-D large eddy simulations (LES) are used to study turbulent flame kernel growth, wrinkling and the formation of separated flame pockets in methane/air mixtures. Turbulence was effected by a set of rotary fans situated in a cylindrical enclosure. Flame wrinkling was followed on sequential 2-D OH images captured at kHz repetition rates. Under stoichiometric conditions and low turbulence levels the flame kernel remains singly connected and close to spherical in shape. By increasing turbulence or reducing the stoichiometry of the mixture the formation of separated pockets could be observed and studied. The mechanisms behind these phenomena are investigated qualitatively by LES of a level-set G-equation describing the flame surface propagation in turbulent flows. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the compressible turbulent synthetic jet flow characteristics of a dual diaphragm piezoelectric actuator. Experimentally, a flow visualization system was established to obtain the particle streak images scattered from 10-μm red fluorescent spheres for observing the synthetic jet flowfield produced by a dual diaphragm piezo actuator. The centerline velocity of the synthetic jet was also measured by using a hot-wire anemometry system. In the analysis, the computational approach adopted the transient three-dimensional conservation equations of mass and momentum with the moving boundary specified to represent the piezo diaphragm motion. The standard k-∈ two-equation turbulent model was employed for turbulence closure. For the actuator operating at the frequency of 648 Hz, the particle streakline images in the cross-sectional plane visualized a turbulent jet flow pattern in the far-field area. The hot-wire anemometry data indicated that the measured centerline velocity of synthetic jets reached 3.8 m/s at y/d= 50. The predictions were compared with the visualized particle streak images and centerline velocity of the synthetic jet in order to validate the computer code. The numerical simulation revealed the time-periodic formation and advection of discrete vortex pairs. Caused by the outward movement of the piezo diaphragms, air near the orifice was entrained into the actuator cavity when the vortex pairs were sufficiently distant from the orifice.  相似文献
