Dimensionless scales of radius and time, proposed by the authors in a previous study, were used to quantitatively analyze the bubble departure radius and time during nucleate pool boiling. The results obtained from dimensional analysis were compared with experimental data reported in many studies. These experimental data are including partial nucleate pool boiling data with constant heat flux and temperature conditions acquired over the past 40 years at atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressures, as well as data obtained at subcooled, saturated, and superheated pool temperature conditions. It was shown that the departure radius and time could be well correlated with respect to Jakob number as proposed by the previous studies. And the bubble departure behaviors well categorized between atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressure, which is occurred from the different growth rate near the departure time partial nucleate pool boiling. For almost all obtained under atmospheric pressure, the dimensionless departure radius and time scales were about 25 and 60, respectively. For higher Jakob number, the square root of Bond number was proportional to the power of 0.7 of Jakob number, little different from the previous correlations. The dimensional departure radius and time estimated from the relationships proposed in this study were compared with measured departure scales and the results obtained with the previous correlations. And it was shown that the relationships could well predict and describe the departure behaviors of bubble during nucleate pool boiling.  相似文献

A digital photographic study of pool boiling with R11 was performed on a horizontal transparent heater at pressure at 0.1 MPa. A high-speed digital camera was applied to record the bubble behaviors of boiling process. The departure diameter, departure time, and nucleation site density at different heat flux were obtained. From the video images, it can be concluded that evaporation of microlayer is very important to the growth of bubble. It was also observed that there is not any liquid replenished into the microlayer below the bubble. In addition, bubble growth curve and dry-out area growth curve could be determined by analyzing the images. Based on the experimental result, boiling curve for R11 was predicted by using the dynamic microlayer model. As a result, the agreement between the predictions and the experiment data is good at high heat flux.  相似文献

With the long-term objective of Critical Heat Flux (CHF) prediction, bubble dynamics in convective nucleate boiling flows has been studied using a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). A sharp-interface phase change model which was originally developed for pool boiling flows is extended to convective boiling flows. For physical scales smaller than the smallest flow scales (smaller than the grid size), a micro-scale model was used. After a grid dependency study and a parametric study for the contact angle, four cases of simulation were carried out with different wall superheat and degree of subcooling. The flow structures around the growing bubble were investigated together with the accompanying physics. The relation between the heat flux evolution and the bubble growth was studied, along with investigations of bubble diameter and bubble base diameter evolutions across the four cases. As a validation, the evolutions of bubble diameter and bubble base diameter were compared to experimental observations. The bubble departure period and the bubble shapes show good agreement between the experiment and the simulation, although the Reynolds number of the simulation cases is relatively low.  相似文献

The fundamental behavior of boiling bubbles generated on a small film heater used for thermal ink jet (TIJ) printers is investigated experimentally under the condition of a single pulse heating in a pool of water. The pulse power and the pulse width are varied in wide ranges that include the printing conditions. As the pulse power is increased or the pulse width increased at a fixed high pulse power, numerous fine bubbles appear simultaneously on the heater and then coalesce into a thin vapor film to grow to a vapor bubble, before collapsing at the center of the heater. For a long pulse width sequence, the coalesced bubble repeats the growth and collapse. Bubble behavior is also studied in the same heat flux range using a platinum film heater enabling surface temperature measurement. From a comparison of the two heaters, the dominant mechanism of nucleation on the TIJ heater is believed to be spontaneous nucleation at around the heating rate for printing. The dependence of the size and lifetime of the coalesced bubble on pulse power and pulse width are examined. Based on the analytical model presented by Asai [J. Heat Transfer 113 (1991) 973], the pressure impulse arising during the rapid evaporation of the superheated liquid, presumed to dominate the subsequent growth of the coalesced bubble, is estimated from the measured size of the coalesced bubble. The relationship between the pressure impulse and the superheat energy in the liquid is discussed.  相似文献

Self-induced thermocapillary convection and its significance with regard to film boiling heat transfer from a vertical saturated surface is discussed. Utilizing a simplified geometrical model, an analytical expression (multiplier factor) for the vapor film thickness and heat transfer coefficient corrected by thermocapillary phenomena was derived. The above equation is a new theoretical viewpoint for the enhancement in the heat transfer coefficient observed in the experimental data in the viscous regime and agree qualitatively with available experimental measurements made on R113 coolant.  相似文献

A study was carried out to observe bubble nucleation and site deactivation mechanisms under equilibrium pool boiling of liquids on single sites. The experiments were conducted with benzene, ethanol, and their mixtures on single sites made of glass. These mechanisms were filmed using a cine camera as the temperature of the boiling liquid was decreased in programmed steps. The experiments showed that the deactivation of a bubble nucleation site in the surface occurred by progressive condensation of vapor within it until the volume of vapor became equal to or smaller than the volume of a spherical bubble of diameter equal to that of the site. Based upon these experimental observations, a site deactivation mechanism is proposed for heterogeneous pool boiling and stability criteria are developed for single cylindrical cavities. The effect of relevant parameters on depth-to-diameter ratio of the sites is also determined.  相似文献

The boiling models use departure diameter and frequency in closure relations for the calculation of nucleate boiling heat flux. These parameters are normally derived from empirical correlations which depend heavily on experiments. While these parameters are studied mostly for saturated conditions, there is not sufficient data for the values of departure diameter and frequency in subcooled boiling. In this work, the bubble departure characteristics, i.e. the departure diameters and frequency have been measured using high speed visualization experiments with subcooled demineralized water at atmospheric pressure for nucleate pool boiling conditions. The water pool dimensions were 300 mm × 135 mm × 250 mm with four different heating elements to carry out the parametric studies of bubble departure behavior. The considered parameters were heater surface roughness, heater geometry and heater inclination along with the experimental conditions like degree of subcooling (ΔTsub = 5−20 K), superheat (ΔTsat = 1−10 K) and the heat flux. The departure diameters and frequencies were directly measured from the images captured. It was intended to generate the subcooled nucleate pool boiling data under a wide range of conditions which are not present in the literature. The departure diameter was found to increase with the wall superheat, heater size and the inclination angle while the liquid subcooling and surface roughness produced a damping effect on the diameter. The departure frequency was found to increase with the wall superheat and the inclination angle, but decreases with an increase in the heater size. The frequency increases with the degree of subcooling except very close to the saturation, and is unaffected by the surface roughness beyond a certain superheat value.  相似文献

Researches on two-phase flow and pool boiling heat transfer in microgravity, which included ground-based tests, flight experiments, and theoretical analyses, were conducted in the National Microgravity Laboratory/CAS. A semi-theoretical Weber number model was proposed to predict the slug-to-annular flow transition of two-phase gas–liquid flows in microgravity, while the influence of the initial bubble size on the bubble-to-slug flow transition was investigated numerically using the Monte Carlo method. Two-phase flow pattern maps in microgravity were obtained in the experiments both aboard the Russian space station Mir and aboard IL-76 reduced gravity airplane. Mini-scale modeling was also used to simulate the behavior of microgravity two-phase flow on the ground. Pressure drops of two-phase flow in microgravity were also measured experimentally and correlated successfully based on its characteristics. Two space experiments on pool boiling phenomena in microgravity were performed aboard the Chinese recoverable satellites. Steady pool boiling of R113 on a thin wire with a temperature-controlled heating method was studied aboard RS-22, while quasi-steady pool boiling of FC-72 on a plate was studied aboard SJ-8. Ground-based experiments were also performed both in normal gravity and in short-term microgravity in the drop tower Beijing. Only slight enhancement of heat transfer was observed in the wire case, while enhancement in low heat flux and deterioration in high heat flux were observed in the plate case. Lateral motions of vapor bubbles were observed before their departure in microgravity. The relationship between bubble behavior and heat transfer on plate was analyzed. A semi-theoretical model was also proposed for predicting the bubble departure diameter during pool boiling on wires. The results obtained here are intended to become a powerful aid for further investigation in the present discipline and development of two-phase systems for space applications.  相似文献

Quantitative measurements are obtained from high-speed visualizations of pool boiling at atmospheric pressure from smooth and roughened surfaces, using a perfluorinated hydrocarbon (FC-77) as the working fluid. The boiling surfaces are fabricated from aluminum and prepared by mechanical polishing in the case of the smooth surface, and by electrical discharge machining (EDM) in the case of the roughened surface. The roughness values (Ra) are 0.03 and 5.89 μm for the polished and roughened surfaces, respectively. The bubble diameter at departure, bubble departure frequency, active nucleation site density, and bubble terminal velocity are measured from the monochrome movies, which have been recorded at 8000 frames per second with a digital CCD camera and magnifying lens. Results are compared to predictions from existing models of bubble nucleation behavior in the literature. Wall superheat, heat flux, and heat transfer coefficient are also reported.  相似文献

High speed visualizations and thermal performance studies of pool boiling heat transfer on copper foam covers were performed at atmospheric pressure, with the heating surface area of 12.0 mm by 12.0 mm, using acetone as the working fluid. The foam covers have ppi (pores per inch) from 30 to 90, cover thickness from 2.0 to 5.0 mm, and porosity of 0.88 and 0.95. The surface superheats are from −20 to 190 K, and the heat fluxes reach 140 W/cm2. The 30 and 60 ppi foam covers show the periodic single bubble generation and departure pattern at low surface superheats. With continuous increases in surface superheats, they show the periodic bubble coalescence and/or re-coalescence pattern. Cage bubbles were observed to be those with liquid filled inside and vented to the pool liquid. For the 90 ppi foam covers, the bubble coalescence takes place at low surface superheats. At moderate or large surface superheats, vapor fragments continuously escape to the pool liquid.  相似文献

A semi-analytical model is developed for the prediction of flow boiling heat transfer inside vertical porous coated tubes. The model assumes that the forced convection and nucleate boiling coexist together in the annular flow regime. Conservations of mass, momentum, and energy are used to solve for the liquid film thickness and temperature. The heat flux due to nucleate boiling consists of those inside and outside micro-tunnels. To close the equations, a detailed analysis of various forces acting on the bubble is presented to predict its mean departure diameter. The active nucleation site density of porous layer is determined from the pool boiling correlation by introducing suppression factor. The flow boiling heat transfer coefficients of organic fluid (cumene) with high saturation temperature in a vertical flame-spraying porous coated tube are studied numerically. It is shown that the present model can predict most of the experimental values within ±20%. The numerical results also indicate that the nucleate boiling contribution to the overall heat transfer coefficient decreases from 50% to 15% with vapor quality increasing from 0.1 to 0.5.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental study of microscopic explosive boiling introduced by a pulsed laser. The violent explosive boiling was observed in the liquid film, and the vapor bubbles together with liquid droplets were expelled from the platinum film. It is found that the apparent bubble nucleation temperature is a strong function of the heating rate. The pressure signal appears as continuous oscillation and is intensified as laser power density increases.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical study was conducted to investigate the bubble behaviors in subcooled flow nucleate boiling. The bubble behaviors in subcooled flow boiling in an upward annular channel were investigated in the range of subcooling degree 5–30 K by visualization with high spatial and temporal resolutions using a high speed video camera and Cassegrain tele-microscope. Obvious deformation on the upstream side surface of the bubble during its growth process was frequently observed. This deformation phenomenon was caused by the condensation occurring at the upstream side bottom of the bubble, which results from the Marangoni flow along the bubble surface from the bubble bottom to the top. Since the Marangoni flow cannot be directly observed by the current experiments because it occurs in a very thin interface along the bubble surface, the numerical simulations of bubble growth and departure behaviors in subcooled flow boiling were carried out. As a result, it was confirmed that the bubble deformation was caused by the Marangoni flow along the bubble surface. Moreover, the phenomenon of wave propagation on the bubble surface during the condensation process was observed, and it can enhance the heat transfer between the bubble and the surrounding subcooled liquid.  相似文献

In this study, pool boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) and critical heat fluxes (CHFs) are measured on a smooth square flat copper heater in a pool of pure water with and without carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed at 60 °C. Tested aqueous nanofluids are prepared using multi-walled CNTs whose volume concentrations are 0.0001%, 0.001%, 0.01%, and 0.05%. For the dispersion of CNTs, polyvinyl pyrrolidone polymer is used in distilled water. Pool boiling HTCs are taken from 10 kW/m2 to critical heat flux for all tested fluids. Test results show that the pool boiling HTCs of the aqueous solutions with CNTs are lower than those of pure water in the entire nucleate boiling regime. On the other hand, critical heat flux of the aqueous solution is enhanced greatly showing up to 200% increase at the CNT concentration of 0.001% as compared to that of pure water. This is related to the change in surface characteristics by the deposition of CNTs. This deposition makes a thin CNT layer on the surface and the active nucleation sites of the surface are decreased due to this layer. The thin CNT layer acts as the thermal resistance and also decreases the bubble generation rate resulting in a decrease in pool boiling HTCs. The same layer, however, decreases the contact angle on the test surface and extends the nucleate boiling regime to very high heat fluxes and reduces the formation of large vapor canopy at near CHF. Thus, a significant increase in CHF results in.  相似文献

Jet impingement boiling is very efficient in cooling of hot surfaces as a part of the impinging liquid evaporates. Several studies have been carried out to measure and correlate the heat transfer to impinging jets as a function of global parameters such as jet subcooling, jet velocity, nozzle size and distance to the surface, etc. If physically based mechanistic models are to be developed, studies on the fundamentals of two-phase dynamics near the hot surface are required. In the present study the vapor–liquid structures underneath a subcooled (20 K) planar (1 mm × 9 mm) water jet, impinging the heated plate vertically with a velocity of 0.4 m/s, were analyzed by means of a miniaturized optical probe. It has a tip diameter of app. 1.5 μm and is moved toward the plate by a micrometer device. The temperature controlled experimental technique enabled steady-state experiments in all boiling regimes. The optical probe data provides information about the void fraction, the contact frequencies and the distribution of the vapor and liquid contact times as a function of the distance to the surface. The measured contact frequencies range from 40 Hz at the onset of nucleate boiling to nearly 20,000 Hz at the end of the transition boiling regime. Due to condensation in the subcooled jet vapor disappears at a distance to the surface of app. 1.2 mm in nucleate boiling. This vapor layer becomes smaller with increasing wall superheat. In film boiling a vapor film thickness of 8 ± 2 μm was found.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to analyze flow boiling characteristics of water in a single brass microchannel of 25 mm length, 201 μm width, and 266 μm depth. Different heat flux conditions were tested for each of two different mass flow rates over three different values of inlet fluid temperature. Temporal and spatial surface temperature profiles were analyzed to show the relative effect of axial heat conduction on temperature rise along the channel length and the effect of flow regime transition on local surface temperature oscillation. Vapor bubble growth rate increased with increasing wall superheat. The slower a bubble grew, the further it was carried downstream by the moving liquid. Bubble growth was suppressed for increased mass flux while the vapor bubble was less than the channel diameter. The pressure spike of an elongating vapor bubble was shown to suppress the growth of a neighboring bubble by more than 50% of its volume. An upstream progression of the Onset of Bubble Elongation (OBE) was observed that began at the channel exit and progressed upstream. The effects of conjugate heat transfer were observed when different flow regime transitions produced different rates of progression for the elongation sequence. Instability was observed at lower heat fluxes for this single channel experiment than for similar studies with multiple channels.  相似文献

Boiling heat transfer on a horizontal circular copper tube in an acoustical field is investigated experimentally and the relation between the liquid cavitation, the boiling and the micro bubble radii are analyzed theoretically. The results show that cavitation bubbles have an important influence on the nucleation, growth and collapse of vapor embryo within cavities on the heat transfer surface and that the enhancement of boiling heat transfer by acoustic cavitation mainly depends on whether the vapor embryo is activated by the cavitation bubbles to initiate boiling.  相似文献

An experimental study of saturated pool boiling from a single artificial nucleation site on a polished copper surface has been performed. Isolated bubbles grow and depart from the artificial cavity and the bubble dynamics are recorded with a high speed camera. Experimental results are obtained for bubble growth, departure and vertical rise both with and without the application of an electric field between an upper electrode and the boiling surface. As detailed in a previous paper from the same research group the high spatial and temporal resolution of the video sequences facilitated the development of a baseline experimental bubble growth law which predicts the bubble volumetric growth characteristics for a range of surface superheats at atmospheric pressure. The presence of an electric field has been found to positively augment the convective heat transfer over that of buoyant natural convection. Further to this, for high electric field strengths, the bubble shape, volumetric growth characteristics and bubble rise are different from that of the baseline cases. These results provide compelling evidence that electric fields can be implemented to alter the bubble dynamics and subsequent heat transfer rates during boiling of dielectric liquids.  相似文献

Interfacial mass transfer from vapor bubbles affects markedly the heat transfer efficiency of nucleate boiling. The position of the interfacial zone that exhibits zero net mass flux, namely, the zero-flux zone, represents an essential parameter in detailed modeling works on nucleate boiling. Assuming a linear temperature profile in the superheated liquid adjacent to the heating wall, our previous work (Li et al. [10]) demonstrated the zero-flux angle as a function of wall superheat, solid-liquid- vapor contact angle, and bubble growth rate. To make a more realistic framework, we refined in this paper the proposed mass flux model by taking into account the role of thermocapillary flow that is induced by the temperature gradient around the vapor bubble, and that of non-condensable gas presented in the boiling liquid. The Hertz-Kundsen-Schrage equation describes the interfacial mass flux distribution along the vapor bubble surface. Owing to the flattened temperature distribution produced by thermocapillary flow, which significantly reduces the interfacial area to evaporation, the zero-flux zone shifts to the bubble base with most of the cap regime to condense vapor at the interface and to produce the thermal jet. This occurrence also weakens the dependence of bubble growth rate and of the contact angle on the location of zero-flux zone, and yields early occurrence of the non-condensation limit at which the entire bubble surface is subjected to evaporation. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated the significance of process parameters on the evaluation of zero-flux angle using the HKS equation.  相似文献

By using unique experimental techniques and carefully constructed experimental apparatus, the characteristics of flow boiling of water in microscale were investigated using a single horizontal rectangular microchannel. A polydimethylsiloxane rectangular microchannel (Dh = 103.5 and 133 μm) was fabricated by using the replica molding technique, a kind of soft lithography. A piecewise serpentine platinum microheater array on a Pyrex substrate was fabricated with the surface micromachining MEMS technique. Real time flow visualization of the phase change phenomena inside the microchannel was performed using a high speed CCD camera with microscope. The experimental local boiling heat transfer coefficients were studied, and single bubble inception, growth, and departure, as well as elongated bubble behavior were analyzed to elucidate the microscale heat transfer mechanisms. Tests were performed for mass fluxes of 77.5, 154.9, and 309.8 kg/m2 s and heat fluxes of 180–500 kW/m2. The effects of mass flux, heat flux, and vapor qualities on flow boiling heat transfer in a microchannel were studied.  相似文献
