ABSTRACT

Permanent memory effect (PME) in polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) allows a greater applicability range than traditional PDLCs. One of the most interesting application could be the possible storing of optical information, the so-called Digital Optical Memory (DOM) devices. To test this application it would be required a display structure having an array of pixels addresses. Each pixel was filled with PDLC film with PME and electric field can be independently applied to different PDLC elements to define on/off pixel states (transparent or scattering states).PDLC films were obtained from a mixture of E7 nematic liquid crystal and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate with 875 g mol-1oligomer as precursor of the polymeric matrix. The effect of the curing temperature and the UV light intensity as well time exposure during the polymerisations on the electro-optical performance of PDLC films were investigated. In this way, a high transparency state (TOFF=55%) for a long period of time at room temperature even after the applied voltage has been switched off were obtained, started from an opaque state (T0=0%) and after reaching a transparent state (TMAX=75%), which causes 73% PME. The application to an 8x8 passive matrix using PDLC with PME is also demonstrated as proof-of-principle.  相似文献

Summary: Electro-optical properties of Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) films doped with different nanoparticles (NPs), as well as optical and morphological properties of liquid crystal/NP mixtures have been investigated. PDLC films were prepared by UV irradiation of thiol-ene monomers and liquid crystal E7 in the presence of a small amount (0.5 and 1 wt.%) of nanoparticles. The presence of NP strongly influence the properties of liquid crystal/NP mixtures. In particular, adding nanoparticles results in a decrease of the glass and nematic-isotropic transition temperatures of the LC, suggesting that strong interactions occur between LC and nanoparticles.  相似文献

Effects of the content of fluorinated alkene-terminated liquid crystal (LC) molecules on the physical properties of the fluorinated alkene-terminated LC/E8 mixture were studied. The morphology and electro-optical properties as they doped in polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were investigated. The detailed discussion of the obtained results is given. As a result, comparing with the physical properties of the series of LC mixtures with the same content of the analogous fully saturated compounds doped with E8, we find that the birefringence is significantly larger for the LC mixture with the alkene-terminated materials. Both fluorinated alkene-terminated LC molecules and the analogous fully saturated compounds doped with E8 reduce the driving voltage of PDLC films. Moreover, PDLC films with the fluorinated alkene-terminated LC molecules possessed higher contrast ratio and faster response time than that of the PDLC films prepared by adding the same mass fraction of the analogous fully saturated compounds. Thus, the ability to manipulate physical properties of LC mixture and electro-optical properties of PDLC films by changing the LC molecular structures may have future relevance for new LC structures design and applications of PDLC films.  相似文献

The different fluorinated liquid crystal (LC) molecules doped to E8 were used as LC component to prepare polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. The mass fraction of the LC mixture is fixed 50.0 wt%. Results indicate that doping 8.0 wt% fluorinated LC molecule ME3CP to E8 significantly reduced the driving voltage of the PDLC films, and the driving voltage reduced with the rise of mass fraction of ME3CP. Besides, the terminal flexible chain length of the fluorinated LC molecule influenced the LC mixture properties based on E8, such as the dielectric anisotropy, birefringence and viscosity of the LC mixture, and the morphology and the electro-optical properties of PDLC films were controlled not only by the physical properties of the LC mixture, but also by the terminal flexible chain length of the fluorinated LC molecule .  相似文献

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films can be switched electrically from a light-scattering off-state to a highly transparent on-state. Thin films were prepared via a polymerization-induced phase separation process, using electron beam radiation. The liquid crystal (LC)/polymer materials were obtained from blends of an eutectic nematie mixture E7 and a polyester acrylate-based polymer precursor. The optical and electro-optical properties of the PDLC films obtained depend strongly on the LC concentration. The LC solubility limit in the polymer matrix and the fractional amount of LC contained in the droplets were determined by means of calorimetrie measurements.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The structures of the liquid crystal (LC) molecules have a key role in impacting the electro-optical performance of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film. In this paper, the relationship between the LC molecular structures and the electro-optical properties of PDLC films is investigated based on an unexplored cyano-terminated tolane compounds (CTTCs) doped E8 LCs/UV polymers system. Due to the high polarity of CTTCs, LCs doped with the cyano-terminated tolane (CTT) molecules exhibit high birefringence and large positive dielectric anisotropy. On the whole, PDLC films doped with the CTT molecules exhibit a lower driving voltage than that doped with the pure E8. More excitingly, PDLC films based on CTT molecules with larger length-to-width ratio and longer conjugated system show higher contrast ratio (CR) and faster response time. Eventually, the mechanism of the effects of CTT-based molecular structures and the relationship between the electro-optical performance of PDLC films and CTT molecules are illustrated. This work paves a new way for optimising the electro-optical properties of PDLC films.  相似文献

Partial off-state alignment of the liquid crystal in polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) droplets was obtained by the application of electric or magnetic fields during their formation. Photopolymerization was used to induce phase separation of the liquid droplets from monomer/liquid crystal solutions. Substantial director directionality was retained in these PDLC films after removal of the fields used during their formation. This alignment affected both the off-state and the on-state electro-optic properties of the films. Transverse electrical fields (5 to 60 V across a 15 μm thickness) applied during PDLC formation from a solution of E7 (BDH Ltd) in a monomer resulted in PDLC films with progressively lower off-state scattering and lower threshold voltage. Strong longitudinal magnetic fields (9 to 14 T) applied during PDLC formation with these materials resulted in strong polarization effects in the light scattering off-state. In the infrared region, where there is less light scattering than in the visible region, the longitudinally aligned films shows tunable birefringent electro-optic effects while retaining the fast time response characteristics of PDLC films with small droplet sizes.  相似文献

Two hyperbranched prepolymers were synthesized via the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer copolymerization of butyl acrylate or butyl methacrylate with divinyl benzene, respectively. These prepolymers were used in the photopolymerization‐induced phase separation process of preparing polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films with no risk of gelation. The morphologies of PDLC samples were investigated. Of particular interest was that the driving voltage (V90) of PDLC with high glass transition temperature (Tg) matrix was as low as 5 V, whereas the V90 of PDLC with low Tg matrix was still high. An explanation for this phenomenon is the hypothesis that different interaction modes function at the interface of liquid crystal and polymer. Meanwhile, the hysteresis of the two systems was minor, which correlated with the hyperbranched structure of polymer. The on‐state transmittance (TON) of PDLC films enhanced because of the well matching between the refractive index of polymer and that of liquid crystal. The electro-optical properties and memory effects are important characters of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) devices. Molecular weight of polymer matrix influences the morphology of liquid crystal droplets in PDLC film and the performance of PDLC devices. In this letter, PDLC films were doped with a small amount of chain transfer agent (CTA), in order to control the molecular weight of polymer matrix. It is observed that the addition of CTA induces a reduction of threshold voltage. In addition, the effect of molecular weight on memory effects of PDLC devices was also discussed. It is found that the entanglement between polymer and liquid crystal molecule increased with the molecular weight, which reduces the memory effect.  相似文献

The conductance of polymer matrix is an important factor for the property of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC). The nanographites are dispersed into the polymer matrix for optimising the dielectric conductive property. The synthesised nanoparticles SiO2 was used as photonic crystal (PC) to work as a template for fabricating PDLC films. A mixture of pre-polymer and liquid crystals (LCs) was infiltrated into the void of the PC and polymerised under ultraviolet light. The void of the PC made uniform the dispersion of the liquid crystals in the films. The optical property of the PDLC films was optimised by doped nanographites and negative charge SiO2 template. The effect of negative charge SiO2 and nanographites on the threshold voltage and driving voltage was researched. The morphology of the PDLC films was studied by the FTIR image. The dispersed LCs droplets were uniformly affected by the addition of the nanographites. The LCs droplets dispersed in the polymer were located in the void of the SiO2 photonic crystal.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films based on epoxy-mercaptan system were prepared by thermal-initiated polymerization. The effects of the liquid crystal (LC) content, the proportion and the functionality of epoxy monomers on the polymer structures and electro-optical properties of the as-made PDLC films were investigated systematically. It was found that the morphologies of the polymer matrix can be altered from polymer meshes to polymer balls by increasing the LC content as well as the functionality of epoxy monomers. Accordingly, the electro-optical properties could be regulated by the morphologies of polymer networks. Especially, the as-made PDLC films with homogeneous porous structures exhibited the optimal electro-optical properties. Consequently, this work offers a meaningful approach to control the microstructures and optimize the electro-optical properties of PDLC films, which indeed can form a wonderful footstone for the wide application of PDLC.  相似文献

In this paper, polymer‐dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films consisting of liquid crystal (LC)/monomers/indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles with good near‐infrared absorption property had been fabricated, and the influence of the ITO nanoparticles modified with 3‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH570) on the PDLC films was systematically studied. First, different liquid crystal content was studied to obtain PDLC films with good electro‐optical properties. And then, various weight ratio of ITO nanoparticles was added to samples. While the content of ITO nanoparticles was increased, the saturation voltage increased and the CR decreased. Though the electro‐optical properties of PDLC samples reduced with the addition ITO nanoparticles, the near‐infrared absorption property of films was enhanced.  相似文献

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared by polymerization-induced phase separation processes using ultraviolet (UV) and electron beam (EB) radiation. A mixture of the nematic LC material E7, an aromatic polyester acrylate, and additional monomeric acrylates was exposed to the EB radiation. A photoinitiator was included in the initial mixture in the case of UV exposure. The electro-optical behaviour of the PDLC films obtained has been investigated as a function of the chosen radiation. The transmission versus voltage curves strongly depend on the curing conditions, and are highly reproducible. Threshold and saturation voltages continuously increase with increasing dose values for UV-cured films, whereas plateau values were reached for EB-cured samples. A small memory effect has been observed for UV-cured systems.  相似文献

To study polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films doped with indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles (NPs), samples were prepared by ultraviolet-initiated polymerisation based on the thiol–acrylate system. Owing to the interaction between PDLC system and ITO NPs, the content and the size of ITO NPs are the main determinants to the microstructure which plays an essential role on the electro-optical and anti-infrared properties of the PDLC films. In the polymer matrix, a novel microstructure consisting of a dense surface, micron-sized meshes and submicron meshes is found to benefit the better performances of the low driven voltage (20.7 V), the relatively high contrast ratio (8.3) and the lowest transmittance(500–2500 nm) on average at about 3.55% with maximum of merely 7.6%. Thus, it lays a solid foundation for the further investigations on the microstructure and the performance of the PDLC films. Meanwhile, it is proved that the PDLC film, improved performance through doping ITO NPs, is promising to be a superior choice in the field of energy-saving.  相似文献
