The precise mechanism and dynamics of charge generation and recombination in bulk heterojunction polymer:fullerene blend films typically used in organic photovoltaic devices have been intensively studied by many research groups, but nonetheless remain debated. In particular the role of interfacial charge-transfer (CT) states in the generation of free charge carriers, an important step for the understanding of device function, is still under active discussion. In this article we present direct optical probes of the exciton dynamics in pristine films of a prototypic polycarbazole-based photovoltaic donor polymer, namely poly[N-11'-henicosanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] (PCDTBT), as well as the charge generation and recombination dynamics in as-cast and annealed photovoltaic blend films using methanofullerene (PC(61)BM) as electron acceptor. In contrast to earlier studies we use broadband (500-1100 nm) transient absorption spectroscopy including the previously unobserved but very important time range between 2 ns and 1 ms, which allows us not only to observe the entire charge carrier recombination dynamics but also to quantify the existing decay channels. We determine that ultrafast exciton dissociation occurs in blends and leads to two separate pools of products, namely Coulombically bound charge-transfer (CT) states and unbound (free) charge carriers. The recombination dynamics are analyzed within the framework of a previously reported model for poly(3-hexylthiophene):PCBM (Howard, I. A. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 14866) based on concomitant geminate recombination of CT states and nongeminate recombination of free charge carriers. The results reveal that only ~11% of the initial photoexcitations generate interfacial CT states that recombine exclusively by fast nanosecond geminate recombination and thus do not contribute to the photocurrent, whereas ~89% of excitons create free charge carriers on an ultrafast time scale that then contribute to the extracted photocurrent. Despite the high yield of free charges the power conversion efficiency of devices remains moderate at about 3.0%. This is largely a consequence of the low fill factor of devices. We relate the low fill factor to significant energetic disorder present in the pristine polymer and in the polymer:fullerene blends. In the former we observed a significant spectral relaxation of exciton emission (fluorescence) and in the latter of the polaron-induced ground-state bleaching, implying that the density of states (DOS) for both excitons and charge carriers is significantly broadened by energetic disorder in pristine PCDTBT and in its blend with PCBM. This disorder leads to charge trapping in solar cells, which in turn causes higher carrier concentrations and more significant nongeminate recombination. The nongeminate recombination has a significant impact on the IV curves of devices, namely its competition with charge carrier extraction causes a stronger bias dependence of the photocurrent of devices, in turn leading to the poor device fill factor. In addition our results demonstrate the importance of ultrafast free carrier generation and suppression of interfacial CT-state formation and question the applicability of the often used Braun-Onsager model to describe the bias dependence of the photocurrent in polymer:fullerene organic photovoltaic devices.  相似文献

Despite significant study, the precise mechanisms that dictate the efficiency of organic photovoltaic cells, such as charge separation and recombination, are still debated. Here, we directly observe efficient ultrafast free charge generation in the absence of field in annealed poly(3-hexylthiophene):methanofullerene (P3HT:PCBM). However, we find this process is much less efficient in unannealed and amorphous regiorandom blends, explaining the superior short-circuit current and fill-factor of annealed RR-P3HT:PCBM solar cells. We use transient optical spectroscopy in the visible and near-infrared spectral region covering, but not limited to, the previously unobserved and highly relevant time scale spanning 1 to 100 ns, to directly observe both geminate and nongeminate charge recombination. We find that exciton quenching leads directly (time scale less than 100 fs) to two populations: bound charges and free charges. The former do not lead to photocurrent in a photovoltaic cell; they recombine geminately within 2 ns and are a loss channel. However, the latter can be efficiently extracted in photovoltaic cells. Therefore, we find that the probability of ultrafast free charge formation after exciton quenching directly limits solar cell efficiency. This probability is low in disordered P3HT:PCBM blends but approaches unity in annealed blends.  相似文献

The electro-optical properties of thin films of electron donor-acceptor blends of a fluorene copolymer (PF10TBT) and a fullerene derivative (PCBM) were studied. Transmission electron microscopy shows that in these films nanocrystalline PCBM clusters are formed at high PCBM content. For all concentrations, a charge transfer (CT) transition is observed with absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and electroluminescence. The CT emission is used as a probe to investigate the dissociation of CT excited states at the donor-acceptor interface in photovoltaic devices, as a function of an applied external electric field and PCBM concentration. We find that the maximum of the CT emission shifts to lower energy and decreases in intensity with higher PCBM content. We explain the red shift of the emission and the lowering of the open-circuit voltage (V(OC)) of photovoltaic devices prepared from these blends with the higher relative permittivity of PCBM (epsilon(r) = 4.0) compared to that of the polymer (epsilon(r) = 3.4), stabilizing the energy (E(CT)) of CT states and of the free charge carriers in blends with higher PCBM concentration. We show that the CT state has a short decay time (tau = ca. 4 ns) that is reduced by the application of an external electric field or with increasing PCBM content. The field-induced quenching can be explained quantitatively with the Onsager-Braun model for the dissociation of the CT states when including a high electron mobility in nanocrystalline PCBM clusters. Furthermore, photoinduced absorption spectroscopy shows that increasing the PCBM concentration reduces the yield of neutral triplet excitons forming via electron-hole recombination, and increases the lifetime of radical cations. The presence of nanocrystalline domains with high local carrier mobility of at least one of the two components in an organic heterojunction may explain efficient dissociation of CT states into free charge carriers.  相似文献

The effect of the addition of 1,8‐octanedithiol (ODT) during processing on the microstructure of blend films of poly[2,6‐(4,4‐bis‐(2‐ethylhexyl)‐4H‐cyclopenta[2,1‐b;3,4‐b′]dithiophene)‐alt‐4,7(2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71 butyric acid methyl ester ([70]PCBM) is studied. Grazing incidence X‐ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy show that the crystalline order of PCPDTBT increases when ODT is introduced in the solution phase either to neat polymer systems or to blends with [70]PCBM. The increased crystalline order is accompanied by less dispersive hole transport in the polymer, and leads to a more efficient formation of a percolating fullerene network within the blend. This contributes to an increase in photocurrent generation. However, the bimolecular recombination rate as determined from photovoltage transients increases upon addition of ODT, limiting the power conversion efficiency to values well below those expected from the energy levels of PCPDTBT. We propose some explanations for this increase in bimolecular recombination, based also on variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. By measuring excited state and charge dynamics in blends of an alternating polyfluorene copolymer and fullerene derivative over nine orders in time and two orders in light intensity, we have monitored the light-induced processes from ultrafast charge photogeneration to much slower decay of charges by recombination. We find that at low light intensities relevant to solar cell operation relatively fast (approximately 30 ns) geminate recombination is the dominating charge decay process, while nongeminate recombination has a negligible contribution. The conclusion of our work is that under solar illumination conditions geminate recombination of charges may be directly competing with efficient charge collection in polymer/fullerene solar cells.  相似文献

A novel fluorinated copolymer (F-PCPDTBT) is introduced and shown to exhibit significantly higher power conversion efficiency in bulk heterojunction solar cells with PC(70)BM compared to the well-known low-band-gap polymer PCPDTBT. Fluorination lowers the polymer HOMO level, resulting in high open-circuit voltages well exceeding 0.7 V. Optical spectroscopy and morphological studies with energy-resolved transmission electron microscopy reveal that the fluorinated polymer aggregates more strongly in pristine and blended layers, with a smaller amount of additives needed to achieve optimum device performance. Time-delayed collection field and charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage are used to gain insight into the effect of fluorination on the field dependence of free charge-carrier generation and recombination. F-PCPDTBT is shown to exhibit a significantly weaker field dependence of free charge-carrier generation combined with an overall larger amount of free charges, meaning that geminate recombination is greatly reduced. Additionally, a 3-fold reduction in non-geminate recombination is measured compared to optimized PCPDTBT blends. As a consequence of reduced non-geminate recombination, the performance of optimized blends of fluorinated PCPDTBT with PC(70)BM is largely determined by the field dependence of free-carrier generation, and this field dependence is considerably weaker compared to that of blends comprising the non-fluorinated polymer. For these optimized blends, a short-circuit current of 14 mA/cm(2), an open-circuit voltage of 0.74 V, and a fill factor of 58% are achieved, giving a highest energy conversion efficiency of 6.16%. The superior device performance and the low band-gap render this new polymer highly promising for the construction of efficient polymer-based tandem solar cells.  相似文献

Despite the central role of light absorption and the subsequent generation of free charge carriers in organic and hybrid organic-inorganic photovoltaics, the precise process of this initial photoconversion is still debated. We employ a novel broadband (UV-Vis-NIR) transient absorption spectroscopy setup to probe charge generation and recombination in the thin films of the recently suggested hybrid material combination poly(3-hexylthiophene)/silicon (P3HT/Si) with 40 fs time resolution. Our approach allows for monitoring the time evolution of the relevant transient species under various excitation intensities and excitation wavelengths. Both in regioregular (RR) and regiorandom (RRa) P3HT, we observe an instant (<40 fs) creation of singlet excitons, which subsequently dissociate to form polarons in 140 fs. The quantum yield of polaron formation through dissociation of delocalized excitons is significantly enhanced by adding Si as an electron acceptor, revealing ultrafast electron transfer from P3HT to Si. P3HT/Si films with aggregated RR-P3HT are found to provide free charge carriers in planar as well as in bulk heterojunctions, and losses are due to nongeminate recombination. In contrast for RRa-P3HT/Si, geminate recombination of bound carriers is observed as the dominant loss mechanism. Site-selective excitation by variation of pump wavelength uncovers an energy transfer from P3HT coils to aggregates with a 1/e transfer time of 3 ps and reveals a factor of 2 more efficient polaron formation using aggregated RR-P3HT compared to disordered RRa-P3HT. Therefore, we find that polymer structural order rather than excess energy is the key criterion for free charge generation in hybrid P3HT/Si solar cells.  相似文献

We report herein a comparison of the photophysics of a series of polythiophenes with ionization potentials ranging from 4.8 to 5.6 eV as pristine films and when blended with 5 wt % 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)propyl-1-phenyl-[6,6]C61 (PCBM). Three polymers are observed to give amorphous films, attributed to a nonplanar geometry of their backbone while the other five polymers, including poly(3-hexylthiophene), give more crystalline films. Optical excitation of the pristine films of the amorphous polymers is observed by transient absorption spectroscopy to give rise to polymer triplet formation. For the more crystalline pristine polymers, no triplet formation is observed, but rather a short-lived (approximately 100 ns), broad photoinduced absorption feature assigned to polymer polarons. For all polymers, the addition of 5 wt % PCBM resulted in 70-90% quenching of polymer photoluminescence (PL), indicative of efficient quenching of polythiophene excitons. Remarkably, despite this efficient exciton quenching, the yield of dissociated polymer+ and PCBM- polarons, assayed by the appearance of a long-lived, power-law decay phase assigned to bimolecular recombination of these polarons, was observed to vary by over 2 orders of magnitude depending upon the polymer employed. In addition to this power-law decay phase, the blend films exhibited short-lived decays assigned, for the amorphous polymers, to neutral triplet states generated by geminate recombination of bound radical pairs and, for the more crystalline polymers, to the direct observation of the geminate recombination of these bound radical pairs to ground. These observations are discussed in terms of a two-step kinetic model for charge generation in polythiophene/PCBM blend films analogous to that reported to explain the observation of exciplex-like emission in poly(p-phenylenevinylene)-based blend films. Remarkably, we find an excellent correlation between the free energy difference for charge separation (deltaG(CS)rel) and yield of the long-lived charge generation, with efficient charge generation requiring a much larger deltaG(CS)rel than that required to achieve efficient PL quenching. We suggest that this observation is consistent with a model where the excess thermal energy of the initially formed polaron pairs is necessary to overcome their Coulombic binding energy. This observation has important implications for synthetic strategies to optimize organic solar cell performance, as it implies that, at least devices based on polythiophene/PCBM blend films, a large deltaG(CS)rel (or LUMO level offset) is required to achieve efficient charge dissociation.  相似文献

A model of tandem charge-carrier photogeneration in disordered organic materials at low excess photon energies above the absorption edge is formulated. It suggests that relaxed singlet excitons dissociate into strongly bound metastable short off-chain geminate pairs. In parallel, triplet excitons can be generated from both primary singlets and short geminate pairs. Owing to a long intrinsic lifetime of triplets, most of them are quenched by geminate pairs and the latter can gain additional energy that facilitates transformation of short pairs into longer ones. This reduces the Coulomb binding energy such that field-assisted full dissociation into free carriers becomes feasible.  相似文献

We explore charge recombination dynamics at electron donor‐acceptor heterojunctions, formed between a semiconductor polymer (PCDTBT) and a fullerene derivative (PC70BM), by means of combined time‐resolved photoluminescence and transient absorption spectroscopies. Following prompt exciton dissociation across the heterojunction, a subset of bound electron‐hole pairs recombines with a temperature‐independent rate distribution spanning submicrosecond timescales to produce luminescent charge‐transfer excitons (CTX). At 14 K, this slow mechanism is the dominant geminate charge recombination pathway, whereas we also observe CTX emission on subnanosecond timescales at 293 K. We thus find that at these temperatures, a fraction of the initial charge‐pair population is trapped deeply such that they only recombine slowly over a broad distribution of timescales by quantum tunneling. We identify geminate polaron pairs (GPP) as a reservoir of long‐lived localized states that repopulate the CTX up to microsecond timescales. The observation of such distributed geminate‐charge recombination highlights the importance of the molecular nature of specific donor–acceptor electronic interactions in defining the relaxation pathways of trapped GPP. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A general dynamic Monte Carlo model for exciton dissociation at a donor-acceptor interface that includes exciton delocalization and hot charge separation is developed to model the experimental behavior observed for the poly(3-hexylthiophene):fullerene system and predict the theoretical performance of future materials systems. The presence of delocalized excitons and the direct formation of separated charge pairs has been recently measured by transient photo-induced absorption experiments and has been proposed to facilitate charge separation. The excess energy of the exciton dissociation process has also been observed to have a strong correlation with the charge separation yield for a series of thiophene based polymer:fullerene systems, suggesting that a hot charge separation process is also occurring. Hot charge separation has been previously theorized as a cause for highly efficient charge separation. However, a detailed model for this process has not been implemented and tested. Here, both conceptual models are implemented into a dynamic Monte Carlo simulation and tested using a simple bilayer donor-acceptor system. We find that exciton delocalization can account for a significant reduction in geminate recombination when compared to the traditional, bound polaron pair model. In addition, the hot charge separation process could further reduce the geminate recombination, but only if the hot charge mobility is several orders of magnitude larger than the standard charge mobility.  相似文献

A numerical model for interpretation of the light‐intensity‐dependent nonlinear characteristics of the short‐circuit current in dye‐sensitized solar cells is suggested. The model is based on the continuity equation and includes the influences of the nongeminate recombination between electrons and electron acceptors in the electrolyte and the geminate recombination between electrons and oxidized dye molecules. The influences of the order and rate constant of the nongeminate recombination reaction, the light‐absorption coefficient of the dye, the film thickness, the rate constant of geminate recombination, and the regeneration rate constant on the nonlinear characteristics of the short‐circuit current are simulated and analyzed. It is proposed that superlinear and sublinear characteristics of the short‐circuit current should be attributed to low electron‐collection efficiency and low dye‐regeneration efficiency, respectively. These results allow a deep understanding of the origin of the nonlinear characteristics of the short‐circuit current in solar cells.  相似文献

We prepared the polymer solar cell based on poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT)/fullerene derivative PCBM(PCBM=[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester) heterojunction and investigated the irradiation intensi- ty-dependent charge recombination dynamics of heterojunction employing nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with bias light so as to simulate the photophysical process in heterojunction when the photovoltaic device is on operation. The experimental data exhibit that the yield of free charges gradually decreases and the loss of mobile carriers originated from bimolecular recombination simultaneously increases as the irradiation intensity gradually enhances. This indicates that the polymer solar cell is much suitably used at a low irradiation intensity.  相似文献

The charge photogeneration and early recombination in MEH-PPV-based charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) and in MEH-PPV/PCBM blend as a reference are studied by ultrafast visible-pump-IR-probe spectroscopy. After excitation of the CTC band, an immediate (<100 fs) electron transfer is observed from the polymer chain to the acceptor with the same yield as in the MEH-PPV/PCBM blend. The forward charge transfer in the CTCs is followed by an efficient (approximately 95%) and fast (<30 ps) geminate recombination. For comparison, the recombination efficiency obtained in the MEH-PPV/PCBM blend does not exceed a mere 50%. Polarization-sensitive experiments demonstrate high (approximately 0.3) values of transient anisotropy for the CTCs polaron band. In contrast, in the MEH-PPV/PCBM blend the dipole moment orientation of the charge-induced transition is less correlated with the polarization of the excitation photon. According to these data, photogeneration and recombination of charges in the CTCs take place locally (i.e., within a single pair of a polymer conjugation segment and an acceptor) while in the MEH-PPV/PCBM blend exciton migration precedes the separation of charges. Results of the ultrafast experiments are supported by photocurrent measurements on the corresponding MEH-PPV/acceptor photodiodes.  相似文献

In conjugated polymers, a majority of photogenerated charges form metastable geminate pairs (GPs), of which only some fraction can dissociate completely. Both the yield of GP photogeneration and the probability of further dissociation of GPs into free charges depend upon an external electric field. In the present article we discuss several experimental methods to detect the existence of geminate pairs such as delayed field collection of charges, field quenching of fluorescence, and field-assisted photoinduced optical absorption. It is shown that the field dependences of the exciton dissociation into GPs and of the free carrier photogeneration yield are rather similar. This is in contrast with the traditional Onsager theory, which assumes field-independent yield of primary photoionization and disregards the field dependence of the initial separations between carriers in GPs.  相似文献

A unique ability of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) is the generation and accommodation of multiple excitons through either optical or electric current pumping. The development and improvement of NC-based optoelectronic devices that utilize multiple excitons requires the understanding of multiple exciton dynamics and their efficient conversion to emitted photons or external charges prior to exciton-exciton annihilation. Here, we demonstrate that significantly enhanced multiexciton dissociation efficiency can be achieved in CdSe quantum rods (QRs) compared to CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we reveal the formation of bound one-dimensional exciton states in CdSe QRs and that multiple exciton Auger recombination occurs primarily via exciton-exciton collision. Furthermore, quantum confinement in the QR radial direction facilitates ultrafast exciton dissociation by interfacial electron transfer to adsorbed acceptors. Under high excitation intensity, more than 21 electrons can be transferred from one CdSe QR to adsorbed methylviologen molecules, greatly exceeding the multiexciton dissociation efficiency of CdSe QDs.  相似文献

Photodissociation of aromatic molecules and the following geminate dynamics of the photochemically produced fragment radical pair in liquid phase are discussed in relation to the results of ultrafast transient absorption measurements. Photodissociation of tetraphenylhydrazine occurs from the unequilibrated excited singlet state competing with the relaxation to the fluorescence state. In addition to the rapid fragmentation, the N?N bond rupture is clearly demonstrated to take place in the fluorescence state of tetraphenyl-and tetratolyl-hydrazine in tens of picoseconds time scale. In the case of di-p-aminophenyl disulfide in nonpolar solvents, geminate recombination of the p-aminophenylthiyl radical and the formation of the radical dimer were observed in tens of picoseconds. The observed slow geminate recombination can be explained by the repulsion between the large dipole of the fragment radical preventing the reformation of the S?S bond and by the restricted conformation required for the dimer formation at the encounter of radicals.  相似文献

In this work the phase behavior of [6,6]-phenyl C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) blends with different poly(phenylene vinylene) (PPV) samples is investigated by means of standard and modulated temperature differential scanning calorimetry (DSC and MTDSC) and rapid heat-cool calorimetry (RHC). The PPV conjugated polymers include poly(2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MDMO-PPV), High T(g)-PPV which is a copolymer, and poly((2-methoxy-5-phenethoxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MPE-PPV). Comparisons of these PPV:PCBM blends with regioregular poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT):PCBM blends are made to see the different component miscibilities among different blends. The occurrence of liquid-liquid phase separation in the molten state of MDMO-PPV:PCBM and High T(g)-PPV:PCBM blends is indicated by the coexistence of double glass transitions for blends with a PCBM weight fraction of around 80 wt%. This is in contrast to the P3HT:PCBM blends where no phase separation is observed. Due to its high cooling rate (about 2000 K min(-1)), RHC proves to be a useful tool to investigate the phase separation in PPV:PCBM blends through the glass transition of these crystallizable blends. P3HT is found to have much higher thermal stability than the PPV samples.  相似文献

Ultrafast infrared transient absorption spectroscopy is used to study the photoinduced bimolecular electron transfer reaction between perylene in the first singlet excited state and 1,4-dicyanobenzene in acetonitrile and dichloromethane. Following vibrational marker modes on both donor and acceptor sides in real time provides direct insight into the structural dynamics during the reaction. A band narrowing on a time scale of a few tens of picoseconds observed on the antisymmetric CN stretching vibration of the dicyanobenzene radical anion indicates that a substantial part of the excess energy is channeled into vibrational modes of the product, despite the fact that the reaction is weakly exergonic. An additional narrowing of the same band on a time scale of several hundreds of picoseconds observed in acetonitrile only is interpreted as a signature of the dissociation of the geminate ion pairs into free ions.  相似文献
