Electron affinity (EA) is one of the most important factors that govern reactivity of atoms and molecules. Chlorine, with the highest electron affinity (3.6 eV) of all elements in the periodic table, is a classic example of reactive elements. Over past thirty years, much research has been done to expand the scope of molecules with electron affinities even larger than that of Cl. These molecules, called superhalogens, have the general formula MX(n+1) where M is a metal atom, X is a halogen atom, and n is the valency of the metal. In this paper we explore the potential of pseudohalogens such as CN, which mimic the chemistry of halogens, to serve as building blocks of new superhalogens. Using calculations based on density functional theory, we show that when a central Au atom is surrounded by CN moieties, superhalogens can be created with electron detachment energies as high as 8.4 eV. However, there is a stark contrast between the stability of these superhalogens and that of conventional AuF(n) superhalogens. Whereas AuF(n) complexes are stable up to n = 5 for neutrals and n = 6 for anions, Au(CN)(n) complexes (with CN moieties attached individually) are metastable beyond n = 1 for neutrals and n = 3 for anions. We investigate the nature and origin of these differences. In addition, we elucidate important distinctions between electron affinity (EA) and adiabatic detachment energy (ADE), two terms that are often used synonymously in literature.  相似文献

Using a combination of density functional theory and anion photoelectron spectroscopy experiment, we have studied the structure and electronic properties of CuCl(n)(-) (n = 1-5) and Cu(2)Cl(n)(-) (n = 2-5) clusters. Prominent peaks in the mass spectrum of these clusters occurring at n = 2, 3, and 4 in CuCl(n)(-) and at n = 3, 4, and 5 in Cu(2)Cl(n)(-) are shown to be associated with the large electron affinities of their neutral clusters that far exceed the value of Cl. While CuCl(n) (n ≥ 2) clusters are conventional superhalogens with a metal atom at the core surrounded by halogen atoms, Cu(2)Cl(n) (n ≥ 3) clusters are also superhalogens but with (CuCl)(2) forming the core. The good agreement between our calculated and measured electron affinities and vertical detachment energies confirm not only the calculated geometries of these superhalogens but also our interpretation of their electronic structure and relative stability.  相似文献

Mono- and binuclear complexes of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with chlorides of the divalent, late 3d metals M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn are investigated by means of electrospray ionization (ESI). Specifically, ESI leads to monocations of the type [(DMF)(n)MCl](+) and [(DMF)(n)M(2)Cl(3)](+), of which the species with n = 2 and 3 were selected for in-depth studies. The latter include collision-induced dissociation experiments, gas-phase infrared spectroscopy, and calculations using density functional theory. The mononuclear complexes [(DMF)(n)MCl](+) almost exclusively lose neutral DMF upon collisional activation with the notable exception of the copper complex, for which also a reduction from Cu(II) to Cu(I) concomitant with the release of atomic chlorine is observed. For the dinuclear clusters, there exists a competition between loss of a DMF ligand and cluster degradation via loss of neutral MCl(2) with decreasing cluster stability from cobalt to zinc. For the specific case of [(DMF)(n)ZnCl](+) and [(DMF)(n)Zn(2)Cl(3)](+), ion-mobility mass spectrometry indicates the existence of two isomeric cluster ions in the case of [(DMF)(2)Zn(2)Cl(3)](+) which corroborates parallel theoretical predictions.  相似文献

The syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of a series of tetranuclear cyanide-bridged compounds are reported. This family of molecular squares, [{M(II)Cl2}2{Co(II)(triphos)(CN)2}2] (M = Mn ([CoMn]), Fe ([CoFe]), Co ([CoCo]), Ni ([CoNi]), and Zn ([CoZn]), triphos = 1,1,1-tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethane), has been synthesized by the reaction of Co(II)(triphos)(CN)2 and MCl2 (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Zn) or Fe4Cl8(THF)6 in a CH2Cl2/EtOH mixture. These complexes are isostructural and consist of two pentacoordinate Co(II) and two tetrahedral M(II) centers. The resulting molecular squares are characterized by antiferromagnetic coupling between metal centers that generally follows the spin-coupling model S total = SM(II)1 - SCo1 + SM(II)2 - SCo2. Magnetic parameters for all the complexes were measured using SQUID magnetometry. Additionally, [CoZn] and [CoMn] were studied by both conventional and high-frequency and high-field electron paramagnetic resonance.  相似文献

An n-propylpyridinium chloride-modified PDMS elastomeric network, PDMS/Py(+)Cl(-), was prepared from linear PDMS chains containing Si(CH(3))(2)OH end-groups cross-linked by 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane and posterior reaction with pyridine. PDMS/Py(+)Cl(-) material was structurally characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and solid state (13)C and (29)Si NMR. Thermogravimetric analysis of the product showed good thermal stability, with the initial temperature of weight loss at 450 K. The ion-exchange capacity of the PDMS/Py(+)Cl(-) was 0.65 mmol g(-1). Metal halides, MCl(z) [M=Fe(3+), Cu(2+), and Co(2+)], were adsorbed by the modified solid from ethanol solutions as neutral species by forming the surface anionic complexes MCl(z+n)(n-). The nature of the anionic complex structure was proposed by UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra. The species adsorbed were FeCl(-)(4), CuCl(2-)(4), and CoCl(2-)(4). The specific sorption capacities and the heterogeneous stability constants of the immobilized metal complexes were determined with the aid of computational procedures. The trend in affinities of PDMS/Py(+)Cl(-) for the metal halides were found to be FeCl(3)>CuCl(2) approximately CoCl(2).  相似文献

Copper chloride anion clusters with both copper oxidation states can be made by laser desorption of CuCl(2) crystals. We have used this method to study the dissociation characteristics of such cluster ions. The stability and the structure of the observed complexes were probed by ab initio calculations. These calculations show that many of these complexes are bridged structures. Thus, for the Cu(2)Cl(4) dimer anion, formally [ClCu-Cl-CuCl(2)](-) , with putative mixed copper oxidation states, the two copper ions become equivalent through bridging. Such bridging does not occur when redox inactive metal ions are present as in [ClCu-Cl-CaCl(2)](-) . By observing the dissociation characteristics of a variety of metal chloride cluster anions produced from binary mixtures, the following Cl(-) affinity order is obtained: FeCl(3) > CuCl > CaCl(2) > FeCl(2) > AgCl ≈ CuCl(2) ≈ ZnCl(2) > LiCl. Ab initio calculations on the Cl(-) affinity of selected chlorides confirm this order as do Cl(-) affinity estimates from the experimentally known vertical electron detachment energies of the superhalogens CaCl(3)(-) and LiCl(2)(-) . An equimolar mixture of CuCl(2) and FeCl(3) produces an intense cluster ion, which, from (65)Cu labeling experiments, is best described as FeCl(4)(-)···Cu(+)···(-)Cl(4) Fe, a Cu(+) bound superhalogen FeCl(4)(-) dimer. The Cu(+) ion can be replaced by the redox inactive alkali cations and by Ag(+) but these metal ion bound FeCl(4)(-) dimers show an entirely different fragmentation behavior which is attributed to the absence of bridging. Electrospray ionization (ESI) of CuCl(2) produces an extended series of (CuCl(2))(n) Cl(-) anions (n = 1-11) and so in ESI very limited reduction of Cu(2+) takes place. The (CuCl(2))(n) Cl(-) anions show an abundant dissociation via loss of neutral Cu(2)Cl(4) which according to our ab initio calculations is 9 kcal/mol more stable than two CuCl(2).  相似文献

Rhodium(III) and iridium(III) complexes containing bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligands (pz = pyrazole, L' in general; specifically, L1 = H2C(pz)2, L2 = H2C(pzMe2)2, L3 = H2C(pz4Me)2, L4 = Me2C(pz)2), have been prepared in a study exploring the reactivity of these ligands toward [Cp*MCl(mu-Cl)]2 dimers (M = Rh, Ir; Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl). When the reaction was carried out in acetone solution, complexes of the type [Cp*M(L')Cl]Cl were obtained. However, when L1 and L2 ligands have been employed with excess [Cp*MCl(mu-Cl)]2, the formation of [Cp*M(L')Cl][Cp*MCl3] species has been observed. PGSE NMR measurements have been carried out for these complexes, in which the counterion is a cyclopentadienyl metal complex, in CD2Cl2 as a function of the concentration. The hydrodynamic radius (rH) and, consequently, the hydrodynamic volume (VH) of all the species have been determined from the measured translational self-diffusion coefficients (Dt), indicating the predominance of ion pairs in solution. NOE measurements and X-ray single-crystal studies suggest that the [Cp*MCl3]- approaches the cation, orienting the three Cl-legs of the "piano-stool" toward the CH2 moieties of the bis(pyrazolyl)methane ligands. The reaction of 1 equiv of [Cp*M(L')Cl]Cl or [Cp*M(L')Cl][Cp*MCl3] with 1 equiv of AgX (X = ClO4 or CF3SO3) in CH2Cl2 allows the generation of [Cp*M(L')Cl]X, whereas the reaction of 1 equiv of [Cp*M(L')Cl] with 2 equiv of AgX yields the dicationic complexes [Cp*M(L')(H2O)][X]2, where single water molecules are directly bonded to the metal atoms. The solid-state structures of a number of complexes were confirmed by X-ray crystallographic studies. The reaction of [Cp*Ir(L')(H2O)][X]2 with ammonium formate in water or acetone solution allows the generation of the hydride species [Cp*Ir(L')H][X].  相似文献

Two new cyano-bridged heterobinuclear complexes, [Mn(II)(phen)2Cl][Fe(III)(bpb)(CN)2] x 0.5CH3CH2OH x 1.5H2O (1) and [Mn(II)(phen)2Cl][Cr(III)(bpb)(CN)2] x 2H2O (2) [phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; bpb(2-) = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)benzenate], and four novel azido-bridged Mn(II) dimeric complexes, [Mn2(phen)4(mu(1,1)-N3)2][M(III)(bpb)(CN)2]2 x H2O [M = Fe (3), Cr (4), Co (5)] and [Mn2(phen)4(mu(1,3)-N3)(N3)2]BPh4 x 0.5H2O (6), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and magnetic studies. Complexes 1 and 2 comprise [Mn(phen)2Cl]+ and [M(bpb)(CN)2]- units connected by one cyano ligand of [M(bpb)(CN)2]-. Complexes 3-5 are doubly end-on (EO) azido-bridged Mn(II) binuclear complexes with two [M(bpb)(CN)2]- molecules acting as charge-compensating anions. However, the Mn(II) ions in complex 6 are linked by a single end-to-end (EE) azido bridging ligand with one large free BPh4(-) group as the charge-balancing anion. The magnetic coupling between Mn(II) and Fe(III) or Cr(III) in complexes 1 and 2 was found to be antiferromagnetic with J(MnFe) = -2.68(3) cm(-1) and J(MnCr) = -4.55(1) cm(-1) on the basis of the Hamiltonian H = -JS(Mn)S(M) (M = Fe or Cr). The magnetic interactions between two Mn(II) ions in 3-5 are ferromagnetic in nature with the magnetic coupling constants of 1.15(3), 1.05(2), and 1.27(2) cm(-1) (H = -JS(Mn1)S(Mn2)), respectively. The single EE azido-bridged dimeric complex 6 manifests antiferromagnetic interaction with J = -2.29(4) cm(-1) (H = -JS(Mn1)S(Mn2)). Magneto-structural correlationship on the EO azido-bridged Mn(II) dimers has been investigated.  相似文献

A detailed understanding of the electronic structure of transition metal bis(dithiolene) complexes is important because of their interesting redox, magnetic, optical, and conducting properties and their relevance to enzymes containing molybdenum and tungsten bis(dithiolene) centers. The electronic structures of the bis(dithiolene) anions [M(mnt)(2)](n-) (M = Ni, Pd, Pt; mnt = 1,2-S(2)C(2)(CN)(2); n = 0-2) were examined by a combination of photodetachment photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and density functional theory calculations. The combined experimental and theoretical data provide insight into the molecular orbital energy levels of [M(mnt)(2)](2-) and the ground and excited states of [M(mnt)(2)](1-) and [M(mnt)(2)]. Detachment features from ligand-based orbitals of [M(mnt)(2)](2-) occur at similar energies for each species, independent of the metal center, while those arising from metal-based orbitals occur at higher energies for the heavier congeners. Electronic excitation energies inferred for [M(mnt)(2)](1-) from the PES experiments agree well with those obtained in optical absorption experiments in solution, with the PES experiments providing additional insight into the changes in energy of these transitions as a function of metal. The singly charged anions [M(mnt)(2)](1-) were also prepared and studied independently. Electron detachment from the ground states of these doublet anions accessed the lowest singlet and triplet states of neutral [M(mnt)(2)], thereby providing a direct experimental measure of their singlet-triplet splitting.  相似文献

Attempted thallium triflate abstraction of chloride anions from the MCl(2) complexes of the unsaturated chelating diphosphines o-dimethyl-bis(diphenylphosphino)tetrathiafulvalene (P2) (M = Pd, Pt) and cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene (dppen) (M = Pd) affords, surprisingly, a Tl(OTf) adduct in the case of (P2)PdCl(2) and (P2)PtCl(2), with no chloride abstraction, and a dicationic bis(palladium) bis(triflate) salt in the case of (cis-dppen)PdCl(2), in which only one Cl anion was removed. The crystal structures of these complexes were determined by X-ray analysis, which established the formulations (P2)MCl(2).Tl(OTf) (M = Pd, Pt) and [(dppen)PdCl](2)(OTf)(2), respectively. These compounds can be seen as possible intermediates in the general chloride abstraction process between (P-P)MCl(2) (M = Pd, Pt) and thallium triflate.  相似文献

Treatment of [[Ti(eta5-C5Me5)(mu-NH)]3(mu3-N)] (1) with the diolefin complexes [[MCl(cod)]2] (M = Rh, Ir; cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) in toluene afforded the ionic complexes [M-(cod)(mu3-NH)3Ti3(eta5-C5Me5)3(mu3-N)]Cl [M = Rh (2), Ir (3)]. Reaction of complexes 2 and 3 with [Ag(BPh4)] in dichloromethane leads to anion metathesis and formation of the analogous ionic derivatives [M(cod)(mu3-NH)3Ti3-(eta5-C5Me5)3(mu3-N)][BPh4] [M = Rh (4), Ir (5)]. An X-ray crystal structure determination for 5 reveals a cube-type core [IrTi3N4] for the cationic fragment, in which 1 coordinates in a tripodal fashion to the iridium atom. Reaction of the diolefin complexes [[MCl(cod))2] (M = Rh, Ir) and [[RhCl(C2H4)2]2] with the lithium derivative [[Li(mu3-NH)2(mu3-N)-Ti3(eta5-C5Me5)3(mu3-N)]2] x C7H8 (6 C7H8) in toluene gave the neutral cube-type complexes [M(cod)(mu-NH)2(mu3-N)Ti3-(eta5-C5Me5)3(mu3-N)] [M = Rh (7), Ir (8)] and [Rh(C2H4)2(mu3-NH)2(mu3-N)Ti3(eta5-C5Me5)3(mu3-N)] (9), respectively. Density functional theory calculations have been carried out on the ionic and neutral azaheterometallocubane complexes to understand their electronic structures.  相似文献

In this study the M(IN)(2)Ni(CN)(4) [where M: Co, Ni, and Cd, and IN: isonicotinic acid, abbreviated to M-Ni-IN] tetracyanonickelate and some metal halide complexes with the following stoichiometries: M(IN)(6)X(2) (M: Co; X: Cl and Br, and M: Ni; X: Cl, Br and I) and Hg(IN)X(2) (X: Cl, Br, and I) were synthesized for the first time. Certain chemical formulas were determined using elemental analysis results. The FT-IR and Raman spectra of the metal halide complexes were reported in the 4000-0 cm(-1) region. The FT-IR spectra of tetracyanonickelate complexes were also reported in the 4000-400 cm(-1) region. Vibrational assignments were given for all the observed bands. For a given series of isomorphous complexes, the sum of the difference between the values of the vibrational modes of the free isonicotinic acid and coordinated ligand was found to increase in the order of the second ionization potentials of metals. The frequency shifts were also found to be depending on the halogen. The proposed structure of tetracyanonickelate complexes consists of polymeric layers of /M-Ni(CN)(4)/(infinity) with the isonicotinic acid molecules bound directly to the metal atom.  相似文献

The bis(bidentate) phosphine cis,trans,cis-1,2,3,4-tetrakis(diphenylphosphino)cyclobutane (dppcb) has been used for the synthesis of a series of novel heterodimetallic complexes starting from [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppcb)]X(2) (1; X = PF(6), SbF(6)), so-called dyads, showing surprising photochemical reactivity. They consist of [Ru(bpy)(2)](2+)"antenna" sites absorbing light combined with reactive square-planar metal centres. Thus, irradiating [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppcb)MCl(2)]X(2) (M = Pt, 2; Pd, 3; X = PF(6), SbF(6)) dissolved in CH(3)CN with visible light, produces the unique heterodimetallic compounds [Ru(bpy)(CH(3)CN)(2)(dppcb)MCl(2)]X(2) (M = Pt, 7; Pd, 8; X = PF(6), SbF(6)). In an analogous reaction the separable diastereoisomers (ΔΛ/ΛΔ)- and (ΔΔ/ΛΛ)-[Ru(bpy)(2)(dppcb)Os(bpy)(2)](PF(6))(4) (5/6) lead to [Ru(bpy)(CH(3)CN)(2)(dppcb)Os(bpy)(2)](PF(6))(4) (9), where only the RuP(2)N(4) moiety of 5/6 is photochemically reactive. By contrast, in the case of [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppcb)NiCl(2)]X(2) (4; X = PF(6), SbF(6)) no clean photoreaction is observed. Interestingly, this difference in photochemical behaviour is completely in line with the related photophysical parameters, where 2, 3, and 5/6, but not 4, show long-lived excited states at ambient temperature necessary for this type of photoreaction. Furthermore, the photochemical as well as the photophysical properties of 2-4 are also in accordance with their single crystal X-ray structures presented in this work. It seems likely that differences in "steric pressure" play a major role for these properties. The unique complexes 7-9 are also fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray structure analyses, clearly showing that the stretching vibration modes of the ligand CH(3)CN, present only in 7-9, cannot be directly influenced by "steric pressure". This has dramatic consequences for their photophysical parameters. The trans-[Ru(bpy)(CH(3)CN)(2)](2+) chromophore of 9 acts as efficient "antenna" for visible light-driven energy transfer to the Os-centred "trap" site, resulting in k(en) ≥ 2 × 10(9) s(-1) for the energy transfer. Since electron transfer is made possible by the use of this intervening energy transfer, in dyads like 2-4 highly reactive M(0) species (M = Pt, Pd, Ni) could be generated. These species are not stable in water and M(II) hydride intermediates are usually formed, further reacting with H(+) to give H(2). Thus, derivatives of 3, namely [M(bpy)(2)(dppcb)Pd(bpy)](PF(6))(4) (M = Os, Ru) dissolved in 1:1 (v/v) H(2)O-CH(3)CN produce H(2) during photolysis with visible light.  相似文献

High energy photon is needed for photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) of anions with high electron binding energies, such as superhalogens and O-rich metal oxide clusters. The highest energy photon used for anion PES in the laboratory has been 157 nm (7.866 eV) from F2 eximer lasers. Here, we report an anion PES experiment using coherent vacuum ultraviolet radiation at 118.2 nm (10.488 eV) by tripling the third harmonic output (355 nm) of a Nd:YAG laser in a XeAr cell. Our study focuses on a set of superhalogen species, MCl(4) (-) (M=Sc, Y, La), which were expected to possess very high electron binding energies. While the 157 nm photon can only access the ground state detachment features for these species, more transitions to the excited states at binding energies higher than 8 eV are observed at 118.2 nm. The adiabatic detachment energies are shown to be, 6.84, 7.02, and 7.03 eV for ScCl(4) (-), YCl(4) (-), and LaCl(4) (-) eV, respectively, whereas their corresponding vertical detachment energies are measured to be 7.14, 7.31, and 7.38 eV.  相似文献

The reaction of phosphanido complexes [Nb(η(5)-C(5)H(4)SiMe(3))(2)(L)(PPh(2))] [L = CO (1), CNXylyl (2)] with early transition metal halides in high oxidation states has been carried out. New bimetallic niobocene complexes [{Nb(η(5)-C(5)H(4)SiMe(3))(2)(L)}(μ-PPh(2))(MCl(5))] [M = Nb, L = CO (3), L = CNXylyl (4); M = Ta, L = CO (5), L = CNXylyl (6)] have been successfully synthesized by the reaction with [MCl(5)](2) (M = Nb or Ta). In a similar way [{Nb(η(5)-C(5)H(4)SiMe(3))(2)(L)}(μ-PPh(2))(MCl(4))] [M = Ti, L = CO (13), CNXylyl (14); M = Zr, L = CO (15), CNXylyl (16)] were synthesized using MCl(4) (M = Ti or Zr). Solutions of complexes 4-6 in chloroform produced new ionic derivatives [Nb(η(5)-C(5)H(4)SiMe(3))(2)(P(H)Ph(2))(L)] [MCl(6)] [M = Nb, L = CO (7), L = CNXylyl (8); M = Ta, L = CO (9), L = CNXylyl (10)]. Ionic complexes [Nb(η(5)-C(5)H(4)SiMe(3))(2)(P(Cl)Ph(2))(L)] [NbCl(4)O(thf)] [L = CO (11), CNXylyl (12)] were formed from solutions in thf - rapidly in the case of 3 but more slowly for 4. New heterometallic complexes [Nb(η(5)-C(5)H(4)SiMe(3))(2)(L)(μ-PPh(2)){(Ti(η(5)-C(5)R(5))Cl(3)}] [R = H, L = CO (17), CNXylyl (18); R = CH(3), L = CO (19), CNXylyl (20)] were synthesized by the reaction of 1 or 2 with [Ti(η(5)-C(5)R(5))Cl(3)] (R = H or CH(3)). All of these compounds were characterized by IR and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, and the molecular structures of 9 and 12 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.  相似文献

Relaxation dynamics of photoexcited charge-transfer-to-solvent (CTTS) states for the I(-)(CH(3)CN)(n) (n = 2 and 3) clusters has been theoretically studied using electronic structure methods. First, we have calculated several lowest singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces using the multireference configuration interaction method. It was found that the character of the singlet CTTS excited-state potential surfaces is very similar to that of the triplet CTTS states. Due to a small singlet-triplet splitting, the lowest triplet potential energy surface was used as a good model to understand the dynamics of the photoexcited singlet CTTS states. We have carried out direct molecular dynamics simulations on the lowest triplet surface at the B3LYP level. When an I(-) anion is exteriorly solvated by CH(3)CN molecules, we found that the (CH(3)CN)(n)(-) anion cluster is effectively produced. In addition, when the I(-) anion is placed in the interior in I(-)(CH(3)CN)(n) clusters, photoexcitation gives an acetonitrile monomer anion plus neutral monomers. However, if the initial geometric configuration is distorted from the minimum structure, we also found that the (CH(3)CN)(2)(-) anion cluster, where an excess electron is internally trapped, is formed via I(-)(CH(3)CN)(2) + hnu --> I + (CH(3)CN)(2)(-) process.  相似文献

We report synthesis of six new bis-nicotinamide metal(II) dihalide complexes [M(nia)(2)Cl(2); M = Mn, Co; nia:nicotinamide, M(nia)(2)Br(2); M = Mn, Hg; M(nia)(2)I(2); M = Cd, Cu], and their characterization by combining infrared spectroscopy with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Infrared spectra indicate that ring-nitrogen is the active donor cite, and the atomic structure of the complexes is determined to be polymeric octahedral or distorted polymeric octahedral. Spin polarized electronic ground state is obtained for Mn, Co, and Cu halide complexes. The colors of the complexes also support the conclusion of octahedral coordination around the metal atoms, in agreement with DFT results.  相似文献

Reaction of HgCl(2) with 2 equiv of MCl(3) in an aromatic solvent yields Hg(arene)(2)(MCl(4))(2) where, arene = C(6)H(5)Me, M = Al (1), Ga (2); arene = C(6)H(5)Et, M = Al (3) and Ga (4); o-C(6)H(4)Me(2), M = Al (5), Ga (6); C(6)H(3)-1,2,3-Me(3), M = Al (7) and Ga (8). The solid-state structures of compounds 1-5 and 7 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In the solid state, compounds 1-4 and 7 exist as neutral complexes in which two arenes are bound to the mercury, and the MCl(3) groups are bound through bridging chlorides to the mercury; compound 5 exists as a cation-anion pair [Hg(o-C(6)H(4)Me(2))(2)(AlCl(4))][AlCl(4)]. However, in solution compounds 1-8 all exist as neutral complexes. The structures of Hg(arene)(2)(AlCl(4))(2) and [Hg(arene)(2)(AlCl(4))](+) have been determined by DFT calculations [B3LYP level] to facilitate the assignment of the (13)C CPMAS NMR spectra and are in good agreement with the X-ray diffraction structures of compounds 1 and 5. Reaction of HgCl(2) with MCl(3) in benzene, m-xylene, and p-xylene results in the formation of liquid clathrates whose spectroscopic characterization is consistent with ionic structures, [Hg(arene)(2)(MCl(4))][MCl(4)]. The calculated energy difference between Hg(C(6)H(5)Me)(2)(AlCl(4))(2) and [Hg(C(6)H(5)Me)(2)(AlCl(4))][AlCl(4)] is discussed with respect to the structure of compound 5 in the solid state versus solution state and the proposed speciation in the liquid clathrates.  相似文献
