The thermomechanical behavior of polymer nanocomposites is mostly governed by interfacial properties which rely on particle–polymer interactions, particle loading, and dispersion state. We recently showed that poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) adsorbed nanoparticles in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrices displayed an unusual thermal stiffening response. The molecular origin of this unique stiffening behavior resulted from the enhanced PEO mobility within glassy PMMA chains adsorbed on nanoparticles. In addition, dynamic asymmetry and chemical heterogeneities existing in the interfacial layers around particles were shown to improve the reinforcement of composites as a result of good interchain mixing. Here, the role of chain rigidity in this interfacially controlled reinforcement in PEO composites is investigated. We show that particles adsorbed with less rigid polymers improve the mechanical properties of composites. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2019 , 57, 9–14  相似文献

To control the interfacial interaction in magnetic metal nanoparticles‐filled polymer composites, surfaces of iron, cobalt, and nickel nanoparticles were grafted by irradiation‐induced polymerization. On the basis of the study of dynamical mechanical behavior, thermal stability, and magnetic performance of the composites prepared by either solution mixing or in situ polymerization, the structure–property relationships of the composites are a function of interfacial interaction and the dispersion state of the nanoparticles. In addition, grafting of polymers onto the surface of the metal nanoparticles changed the surface magnetic state, leading to the possibility of purposely tailoring the magnetic behavior of the composites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The investigation of the interfacial toughness of polymer layered laminar composites with two different approaches produced results differing by up to an order of magnitude and following opposite trends with respect to the strain rates. The flexural modulus and neutral axis of a constrained epoxy‐adhesive layer bound to a painted metal substrate varied with the thickness of the adhesive layer. The adhesion energy depended on the rate at which the force was transmitted to the adhesion bonds—not just on the strength of the adhesion bonds—and on the concomitant strain hardening at high strain rates. As the strain rate and thickness of the polymer layer increased, the transition from a cohesive mode to an adhesive–cohesive (polymer–polymer interface) mode of debonding led to the observed high adhesion energy. The high adhesion energy and increased strain hardening were attributed to the formation of organic–inorganic composites and nanocomposites within the polymer matrix, which evolved as a result of the interactions between the metal oxide pigments and fillers with the polymer matrix during curing. Scission of the polymer chains at the interface was proposed to be the predominant fracture mechanism; it was based on the high relaxation time (~1017 s) and the high activation energy (~175 kJ mol?1). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biomimetic hydrophobic polymer composites with water‐responsive mechanically adaptive behaviors were successfully prepared using hydrophilic chitosan‐treated clay (chi‐clay) as the water‐activated, pH‐sensitive and reinforcing phase and elastomeric thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the matrix. Structural characterization, swelling tests in three representative solutions with different pH values, and dynamic mechanical analysis under wet and dry conditions were performed on the resultant chi‐clay‐TPU composites with varying chi‐clay contents. The results showed that the equilibrium swelling degree of TPU increased significantly with increasing chi‐clay content and that water transportation in all the composites followed Fickian diffusion mechanism. The presence of chi‐clay provided remarkable enhancement of the storage modulus of TPU and offered water‐responsive changes of the modulus. Such changes increased with chi‐clay content and were pH‐sensitive, with the acidic condition rendering the largest modulus difference. These water‐responsive polymer composites may find potential applications in biomedical fields and beyond. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Uniform dispersion and strong interfacial interaction are two critical prerequisites for application of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in polymer composites. To endow the composites with multifunctional feature, no damage on the chemical/electronic structure of SWNTs is also usually required. With these ends in view, two epoxide‐containing pyrene derivatives (EpPys) were designed, synthesized, and used as reactive noncovalent dispersants for developing multifunctional epoxy/SWNT composites. One having longer chain length between epoxide group and pyrene moiety, that is, EpPy‐16, shows higher dispersing efficiency and provides the nanotube dispersion with better stability, thus picking up for subsequent studies. Systematic characterization on SWNT/EpPy‐16 hybrid demonstrates that 13.2 wt % of EpPy‐16 is adsorbed on the SWNT surface through strong π‐stacking interaction, and intrinsic electronic structure of SWNTs is basically reserved. The solution‐based process adopted here preserves the good SWNT dispersing state in dispersion into the composites. Simultaneously, enhanced interfacial interaction is also realized by using EpPy‐16, which interacts noncovalently with SWNT but connects covalently to epoxy network. As a result, the composites acquire 37 and 22% increments in tensile strength and Young's modulus, respectively, relative to that of neat resin. A low‐electrical percolation threshold of 0.1 wt % SWNTs and improved thermal properties were also observed. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

We report the mechanical response of a model nanocomposite system of poly(styrene) (PS)-silica to large-amplitude oscillatory shear deformations. Nonlinear behavior of PS nanocomposites is discussed with the changes in particle dispersion upon deformation to provide a complete physical picture of their mechanical properties. The elastic stresses for the particle and polymer are resolved by decomposing the total stress into its purely elastic and viscous components for composites at different strain levels within a cycle of deformation. We propose a mechanistic model which captures the deformation of particles and polymer networks at small and large strains, respectively. We show, for the first time, that chain stretching in a polymer nanocomposite obtained in large amplitude oscillatory deformation is in good agreement with the nonlinear chain deformation theory of polymeric networks. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary In the TG analysis of the bio-composites, their thermal stability was found to slightly decrease and the ash content to increase as the lignocellulosic filler loading increased. This is a logical consequence of the lower thermal stability of the lignocellulosic filler compared to that of the matrix polymer. The dispersion and interfacial adhesion between the lignocellulosic filler and thermoplastic polymer were important factors affecting the thermal stability of the composite system. In order to improve their compatibility and interfacial adhesion, the incorporation of a compatibilizing agent into the lignocellulosic material-thermoplastic polymer composites is recommended. In the TMA analysis, the thermal expansion of the composites was found to decrease with increasing filler loading and incorporating compatibilizing agent. Lignocellulosic filler is a suitable material for preventing the thermal expansion of the composite materials caused by atmospheric changes.  相似文献

A facile and efficient strategy for preparing well dispersed graphene oxide (GO)‐co‐Poly(phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) copolymer fibers was carried out by direct in situ polycondensation of composite inner salts. The composite inner salts were achieved to improve the dispersivity, solubility, reactivity, and interfacial adhesion of GO in PBO polymer matrix. The structure and morphology of GO‐co‐PBO copolymer fibers have been characterized. It was demonstrated that GO were covalently incorporated with PBO molecular chains and dispersed considerably well in PBO fiber even the GO reach to 3 wt %. Meanwhile, the tensile modulus, tensile strength and thermal stability of GO‐co‐PBO copolymer fibers increased considerably with GO. The mechanism and theoretical calculation of GO enhanced PBO fiber were also discussed. The main reasons for the improvement on performance of PBO fiber should be attributed to good dispersion GO in PBO matrix and covalent bonding networks at the interface between GO and PBO molecular chains. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work reports the study of the effect of chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes on their dispersion in poly(lactic acid). The nanotubes were functionalized by the 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition reaction, generating pyrrolidine groups at the nanotube surface. Further reaction of the pyrrolidine groups with poly(lactic acid) was studied in solution and in the polymer melt. The former involved refluxing the nanotubes in a dimethylformamide/polymer solution; the latter was carried out by direct melt mixing in a microcompounder. The carbon nanotubes collected after each process were characterized by thermogravimetry and by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, showing evidence of polymer bonded to the nanotube surface only when the reaction was carried out in the polymer melt. The composites with polymer modified nanotubes present smaller average agglomerate area and a narrower agglomerate area distribution. In addition, they show improved tensile properties at low CNT concentration and present lower electrical resistivity. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. In the present work, a new technique was developed to determine the interfacial properties of two opaque glass fibre/polypropylene (GF/PP) systems via fragmentation tests on single filament model composites. Fragmentation tests usually require the fibre inside the composites to be completely aligned in the loading direction. Since PP matrices are non-transparent, it is not possible to guarantee a priori this condition. Hence, a novel technique was developed to determine the inclination of the filaments embedded in the composites. The fibre–polymer systems were also evaluated by comparing their interfacial properties with the overall mechanical properties determined on pultruded GF/PP composites. The present work shows that the knowledge of the interfacial properties is important, not only to compare alternative fibre/matrix systems, but also to assess whether the level of adhesion in these systems is adequate to fabricate composites with good mechanical properties.  相似文献

Polymer nanocomposites based on a very small quantity of carbon nanotube (CNT) and thermotropic liquid crystal polymer (TLCP) were prepared by simple melt blending using a twin-screw extruder. Morphological observations revealed that modified CNT was uniformly dispersed in the TLCP matrix and increased interfacial adhesion between the nanotubes and the polymer matrix. The enhancement of the storage and loss moduli of the TLCP nanocomposites with the introduction of CNT was more pronounced at low frequency region, and non-terminal behavior observed in the TLCP nanocomposites resulted from the nanotube-nanotube and polymer-nanotubes interactions. There is significant dependence of the mechanical, rheological, and thermal properties of the TLCP nanocomposites on the uniform dispersion of CNT and the interfacial adhesion between CNT and TLCP matrix, and their synergistic effect was more effective at low CNT content than at high CNT content. The key to improve the overall properties of the TLCP nanocomposites depends on the optimization of the unique geometry and dispersion state of CNT and the interfacial interactions in the TLCP nanocomposites during melt processing. This study demonstrate that a very small quantity of CNT substantially improved thermal stability and mechanical properties of the TLCP nanocomposites, providing a design guide of CNT-filled TLCP composites with as great potential for industrial use.  相似文献

Short length vapor‐grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNFs) were functionalized with 4‐aminobenzoic acid in polyphosphoric acid/phosphorous phentoxide medium via “direct” Friedel‐Crafts acylation reaction to afford aminobenzoyl‐functionalized VGCNFs (AF‐VGCNFs). The AF‐VGCNFs as a cocuring agent were mixed with epoxy resin by simple mechanical stirring in methanol which was added to help efficient mixing. After evaporation of methanol, 4,4′‐methylenedianiline as a curing agent was added to the mixture, which was then cured at elevated temperatures. The resultant composites displayed uniform dispersion of AF‐VGCNFs into cured epoxy matrix. During curing process, the amine functionalities on AF‐VGCNF together with 4,4′‐methylenedianiline were expected to be involved in covalent attachment to the epoxy resin. As a result, both tensile modulus and strength of the composites were improved when compared with those of pure epoxy resin. Thus, the AF‐VGCNFs play a role as an outstanding functional additive, which could resolve both dispersion and interfacial adhesion issues at the same time by functionalization of VGCNFs and covalent bonding between the additive and matrix, respectively. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyethylene (PE)/aluminum (Al) nanocomposites with various filler contents were prepared by a solution compounding method. We investigated the influence of the surface modification of Al nanoparticles on the microstructure and physical properties of the nanocomposites. The silane coupling agent octyl‐trimethoxysilane was shown to significantly increase interfacial compatibility between the polymer phase and Al nanoparticles. Rheological percolation threshold values were determined by analyzing the improvement in storage modulus at low frequencies depending on the Al loadings. Lower percolation threshold values were obtained for the composites prepared with the original nanoparticles than those prepared with the silane‐modified Al nanoparticles. A strong correlation between the time and concentration dependences of dc conductivity and rheological properties was observed in the different nanocomposite systems. The rheological threshold of the composites is smaller than the percolation threshold of electrical conductivity for both of the nanocomposite systems. The difference in percolation threshold is understood in terms of the smaller particle–particle distance required for electrical conduction when compared with that required to impede polymer mobility. It was directly shown by SEM characterization that the nanoparticle surface modification yielded better filler dispersion, as is consistent with our rheological and electrical analysis. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, polypropylene (PP)/thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) filled with inorganic intumescent flame retardant expanded graphite (EG) was prepared by melt blending in a twin-screw extruder. The thermal stability, fire retardancy, mechanical properties, and fracture morphology of PP/TPU composites with treated and untreated EG were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis, cone calorimeter, and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that both untreated and treated EG can greatly enhance the thermal stability and fire resistance of polymer matrix materials. Compared with untreated EG, treated EG can further improve the flame retardancy of the composites. For example, treated EG can further reduce the heat release rate, total heat release, and CO emissions of the composites in the combustion. Surface treatment of EG could significantly improve elongation at break and impact strength of PP/TPU/EG composites due to its enhanced interfacial adhesion and the good dispersion of EG particles in the polymer matrix.  相似文献

A silane coupling agent, γ‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, for the surface modification of glass fibers was varied between 0.1 and 0.8 wt %. To understand the role of interfacial adhesion of glass fiber/unsaturated polyester composites, contact angles of the silane‐treated glass fibers were measured by the wicking method on the basis of the modified Washburn equation with deionized water, diiodomethane, and ethylene glycol as testing liquids. As a result, silane‐treated glass fibers led to increased surface free energy, mainly because of their increased specific or polar component. The mechanical interfacial behaviors based on the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites determined by short‐beam tests and the critical stress‐intensity factor (KIC) were also improved in the case of silane‐treated composites. The surface free energy and the mechanical interfacial properties especially showed the maximum value in the presence of 0.4 wt % silane coupling agent. It revealed that the increase of a specific component of the surface free energy or hydrogen bonding between the glass fibers and the coupling agents plays an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces in a composite system. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Industrial plastics, biomedical polymers and numerous other polymeric systems are contacted with water for everyday functions and after disposal. Probing the interfacial molecular interactions between widely used polymers and water yields valuable information that can be extrapolated to macroscopic polymer/water interfacial behaviors so scientists can better understand polymer bio-compatibility, hygroscopic tendencies and improve upon beneficial polymer behavior in water. There is an ongoing concerted effort to elucidate the molecular level behaviors of polymers in water by using sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG). SFG stands out for its utility in probing buried interfaces in situ and in real time without disrupting interfacial chemistry. Included in this review are SFG water interfacial studies performed on poly(methacrylate) and (acrylate)s, poly(dimethyl siloxane)s, poly(ethylene glycol)s, poly(electrolyte)s and other polymer types. The driving forces behind common water/polymer interfacial molecular features will be discussed as well as unique molecular reorientation phenomena and resulting macroscopic behaviors from microscopic polymer rearrangement. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A big challenge in making a composite lies in achieving individual‐nanotube dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in a polymer matrix, without aggregation and entanglement and excellent interfacial adhesion between the CNTs and the polymers matrix. In this communication, using polyethylene glycol‐200, we successfully prepared CNT‐reinforced polyimide composites that exhibit individual‐nanotube dispertion in the matrix at high‐loading CNT's. The content of CNTs in a composite can reach 43 wt%. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The knowledge of the structure and orientation of polymer chains adsorbed at an interface could be of major importance to predict the level of interfacial interactions and adhesion that depend strongly on the properties of the interface formed between the two materials (polymer and substrate) brought into contact. In this work, we were interested to study thin films of atactic polystyrene after adsorption (spin‐coating) on two chemically different substrates (inert and OH‐grafted gold substrates). The main aim is to analyze the resulting anisotropy due to the confinement in a quasi‐bidimensional geometry, as well as to investigate the incidence of the interfacial interactions, potentially established between the polymer and the surface, on the chain organization. Our infrared spectroscopy results allowed us to access the adsorption model of polystyrene chains and to highlight the relation between chain orientation and interfacial acid–base interactions.

An approach was proposed for the quantitative determination of adhesion strength in composites, in which adhesion is created by other mechanisms than secondary interactions. The approach is based upon a model, which gives debonding stress as a function of interfacial adhesion. Debonding stress was determined by acoustic emission experiments. The mechanism of deformation was checked by SEM experiments and the approach was verified on composites with known interfacial adhesion. The results showed that the use of functionalized polymer in PP/CaCO3 composites resulted in adhesion strength one order of magnitude larger than without the coupling agent. The application of various surface modification techniques in PP/glass bead composites yielded different adhesion values covering a range of about one order of magnitude. The quantitative determination of interfacial adhesion makes possible the design and optimization of most surface modification techniques in particulate filled and short fiber reinforced composites.  相似文献
