Optical microscopy and spectroscopy have long been key techniques in medicine, biology, chemistry, and materials science. Among their advantages are:
  • 1. Universality. All materials and samples attenuate light and have spectroscopic states.

  • 2. Noninvasiveness. Most often the sample is not altered in a microscopic and/or spectroscopic investigation. Moreover, biological samples usually can be studied in their native environment. Most chemical reactions are not perturbed by light of long enough wavelength.

  • 3. Real-time observation. Biological phenomena, chemical reactions, crystallization, and so on can be observed under the microscope as they happen in situ (even with one's eyes); spectroscopic measurements can be performed on line in an industrial process or other setting.

  • 4. Energy and chemical state resolution. The obvious advantages of spectroscopy and photochemistry, at ambient temperature, can be trivially added to the optical methods mentioned above. By contrast, this is not easily accomplished with other techniques such as electron microscopy or x-ray crystallography.

  • 5. Safety. Optical and spectroscopic analyses usually are very safe, and precautions are mostly limited to wearing optically protective eyeglasses.

  • 6. Low price. Optical microscopy is much cheaper than, say, electron microscopy; optical spectroscopy is usually a bargain compared with, say, NMR instruments. Obviously, there are exceptions.

  • 7. Speed, zoom, and human factors. Optical techniques are usually fast and can be extended even into the femtosecond time domain. They can be used from astronomical to microscopic distances. Preliminary or concomitant observations can be made using our most developed sense—sight, and in living color—even without the brokerage services of an analog or digital interface.

Laser Raman Spectroscopy is used to study catalysts : Co, Mo or Co-Mo supported on alumina. Well defined salts spectra are compared to those of these solids, which permits to establish superficial structures of cobalt, molybdenum or both.

For molybdenum catalysts, we found two structures depending upon the concentration

isolated MoO2- 4 molecular ions at low concentration < 4%

polymolybdate phase at higher concentration

For cobalt catalysts two structures are also observed: - tetrahedrally surrounded co 2+ ions at low concentration Co3O4 clusters at higher concentrations

For cobalt-molybdenum (8%) catalysts three cases occur no effect is observable at very low concentration of cobalt (0.5%)

a well defined compound appears for Co/Mo atomic ratio 0.25

when the cobalt concentration increases a third structure is observed but not identified

All these results are compared to X Ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies and are in good agreement with them.  相似文献

Abstract

In the melts of Se S and I2 the nonmetal-metal transitions were found under pressure. For sulphur and selenium the transitions are accompanied by a decrease of the volume. For iodine two transitions take place. During the first one the volume changes very slightly, the second transition being accompanied by an essential decrease of the volume.

The existence of transitions of this kind gives an explanation for anomalies in the melting curves of some substances.  相似文献

Phase transitions in normal alkanes, such as tricosane (C23H48), tetracosane (C24H50), and pentacosane (C25H52), were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The elimination of some procedural errors provided the possibility to obtain true values for the thermodynamic parameters of phase transitions and ascertain their nature. The comparative analysis of heat capacity jumps was performed on the basis of the theory of diffuse first-order phase transitions.

Via simulating the contribution of spin-orbit interaction to nuclear masses by orthogonal Chebyshev polynomials, the mass excesses are calculated for a group of atomic nuclei characterized by the isospins of Tz = 51/2, 26, 53/2, 55/2, 28, and 57/2 and by the presence of restored Wigner’s spin-isospin SU(4) symmetry. The root-mean-square deviation of the results of these calculations from their experimental counterparts is σ = 140 keV. The potential of the proposed method is discussed.

Assuming the validity ofRaman andNath's preliminary theory, the amplitudes of the light diffracted by two parallel ultrasonic waves consisting of a fundamental tone and its nth harmonic are compared in the following cases:

  1. (1)

    the sound waves are superposed;

  2. (2)

the sound waves are situated side by side.

The diffraction patterns are approximately the same if the condition πnL/λ*¦sin ?s¦?1 is fulfilled, where sin?s=?sλ/μ0λ*(s being an integer);λ is the wave-lenght of the incident light in vacuum, λ* is the wave-lenght of the fundamental tone of the sound waves, μ0 is the refractive index of the medium andL the width of the sound field. The good agreement between recent experiments ofMurty andRao in the arrangement of case (2) and theoretical results calculated in case (1) is thus justified. The theoretical confirmation of older experiments byPande, Pancholy andParthasarathy is thereby established at the same time.
