Flow structures of a separating, reattaching, and recovering boundary layer over a smoothly contoured ramp are examined for an order of magnitude range of Reynolds number, which is achieved by increasing the wind tunnel pressure by up to 8 atm and varying the tunnel speed by a factor of three. The study was performed using instantaneous velocity vector plots and two-point correlations measured by PIV. The present paper discusses length scales of large-scale motions of the flow and roller vortices in the separated shear layer and their dependence on the Reynolds number or the flow geometry. Two-point correlation profiles show that the Reynolds number effects on the correlations vary strongly from region to region within the flow. Downstream of reattachment, correlation profiles show that the inner portion of the boundary layer recovers more rapidly than the outer portion, where excessively active eddies still persist. The Reynolds number effects seen at reattachment diminish in the recovery region, and the correlation profiles start to take on ordinary boundary layer characteristics.  相似文献

This experimental investigation deals with transition phenomena of a separated boundary layer under unsteady inlet flow conditions. The main purpose of this investigation is to understand the influence of the rotor-stator interaction in turbomachinery on the subsequent, highly loaded boundary layer. The research project is divided into two phases. In the first phase, which has been completed recently, only the variation of mean velocity caused by upstream blades was simulated in the experiments while the free-stream turbulence intensity was retained at a constant low level. The experiments are carried out in an Eifel-type wind tunnel to investigate the laminar separated boundary layer of a flat plate under oscillating inlet conditions. The adverse pressure gradient, similar to that of turbomachines, is generated by the contoured upper wall. The unsteadiness is produced by a rotating flap located downstream of the test section. The reduced frequency, the amplitude and the mean Reynolds number are varied to simulate the conditions prevailing in turbomachines. In addition to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability of the separated shear layer, a lower frequency instability was observed. This is frequently referred to as `free shear layer flapping' and results in two distinctly different ways of re-attachment, depending primarily on the Reynolds number. For low momentum thickness Reynolds numbers at the separation point, large-scale vortices locked to the frequency of the unsteady main flow are identified. They originate nearly at the top of the separation bubble and are ejected downstream. A fully turbulent boundary layer develops after these vortices mix out. For higher Reynolds numbers, transition is completed within a short length of the free shear layer and there-attachment region. The characteristic momentum thickness Reynolds number separating these two regimes in unsteady flow is about 125. The Strouhal number (reduced frequency) does not appear to have any significant effect. Based on the experimental results, this behaviour is discussed in some detail. A single-component, computer-operated, three dimensional traversing Laser Doppler Velocimetry system was designed and constructed for a supersonic wind tunnel. The model was a 10° compression corner, providing an example of laminar boundary layer separation. Static pressure data and color schlieren photographs were taken. The Mach number was 2.42 and the Reynolds number was 2.13 x 105. The flow was seeded with submicron sized oil droplets.The trend of decreasing upstream influence with increasing Reynolds number was confirmed. Mean velocity profiles provided experimental evidence of reversed flow. Points of separation and reattachment were consistent with those determined by schlieren and pressure scans. The flow was of the laminar type until downstream of reattachment. Individual mean velocity and turbulence profiles, as well as velocity histograms are presented.  相似文献

With reference particularly to the work of Peter Bradshaw and his associates, some remarks are made about the recovery of previously distorted shear flows. It is emphasized that such recovery is usually extremely slow, and this is further illustrated by new measurements of the velocity field and turbulence structure in the relaxing flow downstream of a separated region. Data have been obtained for downstream distances (x) up to about 20 times the length of the separated region (xr), or about 75 times the flow thickness at reattachment. This is a significantly more extensive region than has been previously studied, and the data are more comprehensive than any previously available.

It is shown that the recovery is even slower than previously surmized. Furthermore, the measurements demonstrate that the turbulence stresses eventually fall below standard boundary-layer values (at the same Reynolds number), although around reattachment they are very much higher, having values more akin to those in plane mixing layers. This undershoot is apparently a new finding and is argued to be a result of the influence of the outer part of the flow on the growing inner region. The usual log-law only begins to appear beyond x/xr = 2.5. It effectively “sees” a turbulent outer region that recovers even more slowly than itself, and the response of the inner region therefore has similarities to the response of an ordinary boundary layer to free-stream turbulence.

It is concluded that even current second-order (i.e., Reynolds stress) models may not capture the exquisitely slow decay of the strong, large eddy motions in the outer part of the flow and the subtleties of their influence on the inner region.  相似文献

Detailed measurements of two-dimensional profiles of static pressure, mean velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds shear stress were carried out with conventional pressure probes and hot wire probes at preselected streamwise stations in the boundary layer and wake of a 12.5% thick, 600 mm chord two-dimensional symmetric aerofoil mounted at zero incidence in a low speed wind tunnel. The chord Reynolds number was one million and the wake measurements extended up to three chord lengths (or nearly 660 trailing edge momentum thicknesses) downstream of the trailing edge. The data indicate rapid interaction of the wall layers immediately behind the trailing edge, leading to significant changes in the flow parameters close to the trailing edge. The relaxation of the wake is preceded by initial ‘overshoot’ in the streamwise profiles of mean-flow parameters and peak values of turbulence components. Further growth of the wake towards similarity/equilibrium is discussed.  相似文献

The turbulent velocity field over the rib-roughened wall of an orthogonally rotating channel is investigated by means of two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV). The flow direction is outward, with a bulk Reynolds number of 1.5 × 104 and a rotation number ranging from 0.3 to 0.38. The measurements are obtained along the wall-normal/streamwise plane at mid-span. The PIV system rotates with the channel, allowing to measure directly the relative flow velocity with high spatial resolution. Coriolis forces affect the stability of the boundary layer and free shear layer. Due to the different levels of shear layer entrainment, the reattachment point is moved downstream (upstream) under stabilizing (destabilizing) rotation, with respect to the stationary case. Further increase in rotation number pushes further the reattachment point in stabilizing rotation, but does not change the recirculation length in destabilizing rotation. Turbulent activity is inhibited along the leading wall, both in the boundary layer and in the separated shear layer; the opposite is true along the trailing wall. Coriolis forces affect indirectly the production of turbulent kinetic energy via the Reynolds shear stresses and the mean shear. Two-point correlation is used to characterize the coherent motion of the separated shear layer. Destabilizing rotation is found to promote large-scale coherent motions and accordingly leads to larger integral length scales; on the other hand, the spanwise vortices created in the separating shear layer downstream of the rib are less organized and tend to be disrupted by the three-dimensional turbulence promoted by the rotation. The latter observation is consistent with the distributions of span-wise vortices detected in instantaneous flow realizations.  相似文献

This paper investigates the vortex dynamics in the suction-side boundary layer on an aero-engine low pressure turbine blade at two different Reynolds numbers at which short and long laminar separation bubbles occur. Different vortical patterns are observed and investigated through large eddy simulation (LES). The results show that at the higher Reynolds number, streamwise streaks exist upstream of separation line. These streaks initiate spanwise undulation in the form of vortex tubes, which roll-up and shed from the shear layer due to the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability. The vortex tubes alternately pair together and eventually distort and break down to small-scale turbulence structures near the mean reattachment location and convect into a fully turbulent boundary layer. At the lower Reynolds number, streamwise streaks are strong and the separated flow is unable to reattach to the blade surface immediately after transition to turbulence. Therefore, bursting of short bubbles into long bubbles can occur, and vortex tubes have larger diameters and cover a part of the blade span. In this case vortex pairing does not occur and vortex shedding process is promoted mainly by flapping phenomenon. Moreover, the results of dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) analysis show a breathing motion as a source of unsteadiness in the separation location, which is accompanied by the flapping phenomenon.  相似文献

Experimental investigations have been devoted to the study of scaling law of coarse-grained dissipation rate structure function for velocity and temperature fluctuation of non-isotropic and inhomogeneous turbulent flows at moderate Reynolds number. Much attention has been paid to the case of turbulent boundary layer, which is typically the non-istropic and inhomogeneous trubulence because of the dynamically important existence of organized coherent structure burst process in the near wall region . Longitudinal velocity and temperature have been measured at different vertical positions in turbulent boundary layer over a heated and unheated flat plate in a wind tunnel using hot wire anemometer. The influence of non-isotropy and inhomogeneity and heating the wall on the scaling law of the dissipation rate structure function is studied because of the existence of organized coherent structure burst process in the near wall region . Experiments were carried out to study the behavior of the incompressible turbulent separated shear layer and subsequent reattachment, downstream of a backward-facing step in a channel. The main objective of the study was to determine the effect of the expansion ratio on the development of the mean velocity and turbulence intensity in the shear layer and on the evolution of wall static pressure downstream of the step. The step height-to-upstream channel height ratio was varied between 0.5 and 2.13 while all inlet conditions were kept constant. Both hot-wire anemometry and frequency shifted laser Doppler anemometry were used for the velocity measurements. The Reynolds number based on free stream velocity and channel height upstream of the step was 16,600. The expansion ratio was found to have a particularly strong influence in the development of the turbulent, separated shear layer. Larger step height-to-inlet channel height ratios lead to higher turbulence intensities and faster growth of the unstable shear layer. As a result of this, shorter normalized reattachment lengths occurred with lager expansion ratios. For all the expansion ratios studied, the mean reattachment lenght was uniform along the spanwise direction except very near the side walls.  相似文献

The transient dynamics of a high Reynolds number separated flow over a two-dimensional ramp submitted to pulsed fluidic control is investigated. A spanwise array of 22 round jets, located upstream of the flap leading edge, is used as actuator to generate co-rotating vortical structures. Simultaneous measurements of wall friction using hot-film anemometry and phase-averaged velocity using 2D2C PIV are conducted. The PIV plane encompasses the incoming boundary layer upstream the flap leading edge, the separation bubble and the natural reattachment region. The dynamics of the separated flow is studied for successive sequences of pulsed actuation. Pockets of turbulence are periodically generated by the separation process and pushed downstream. After the transition period, the controlled flow shows large amplitude oscillations around a steady mean, particularly for the separation area. The transient dynamics of the flow at the actuation activation is also studied. The separated flow is strongly modified by the actuation from the first pulse. Characteristic times of the transient dynamics can be determined by fitting a first-order model with delay on the data. For the reattachment, the dimensionless characteristic rising times defined as \(\tau _{r}^{+} = \tau _{r} ~ U_{0} ~/~ L_{sep}\) of 11.7 for the friction gain, 4.8 for the separation length and 4.1 for the first mode of a Conditional Proper Orthogonal Decomposition analysis of the phase-averaged velocity fields were found. These values are in good agreement with previous studies and are of particular interest for modeling the transients and for further closed-loop control applications.  相似文献

Separated shear layer of blunt circular cylinder has been experimentally investigated for the Reynolds numbers (based on the diameter) ranging from 2.8×103 to 1.0×105, with emphasis on evolution of separated shear layer, its structure and distribution of Reynolds shear stress and turbulence kinetic energy. The results demonstrate that laminar separated shear layer experiences 2–3 times vortex merging before it reattaches, and turbulence separated shear layer takes 5–6 times vortex merging. In addition, relationship between dimensionless initial frequencies of K-H instability and Reynolds numbers is identified, and reasons for the decay of turbulence kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress in reattachment region are discussed. Experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel to assess the effect of a moving wall on a fully developed, equilibrium turbulent boundary layer. Pitot-static and total head probes were used in conjunction with both single- and two-component hot-wire anemometer probes to quantify the effect of wall motion on the boundary layer velocity statistics. A variable speed, seamless belt formed the wind tunnel test section wall. When stationary, the belt was found to possess a fully developed, equilibrium turbulent boundary layer in excellent agreement with archival data. With the tunnel wall moving at the free-stream speed, and at a sufficient distance above the wall, the velocity statistics in the moving-wall boundary layer were found to collapse well when scaled as a self-preserving turbulent wake. The near-wall mean velocity profile of the moving wall was found to exhibit an extended region of linearity compared to canonical turbulent boundary layer and internal flows. A new facility for studying high Reynolds number incompressible turbulent boundary layer flows has been constructed. It consists of a moderately sized wind tunnel, completely enclosed by a pressure vessel, which can raise the ambient air pressure in and around the wind tunnel to 8 atmospheres. This results in a Reynolds number range of about 20:1, while maintaining incompressible flow. Results are presented for the zero pressure gradient flat plate boundary layer over a momentum thickness Reynolds number range 1500–15?000. Scaling issues for high Reynolds number non-equilibrium boundary layers are discussed, with data comparing the three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer flow over a swept bump at Reynolds numbers of 3800 and 8600. It is found that successful prediction of these types of flows must include length scales which do not scale on Reynolds number, but are inherent to the geometry of the flow.  相似文献

The present paper reports the results of a detailed experimental study, carried out by means of a two-component Laser Doppler Velocimeter, aimed at investigating the loss generation mechanisms induced by laminar separation bubble and transition process. Measurements have been performed along a flat plate installed within a double contoured test section, designed to produce an adverse pressure gradient typical of Ultra-High-Lift turbine blade profiles, which induces the formation of a laminar separation bubble. Results were detailed enough to allow calculating laminar and turbulent deformation works in the separated flow region. Normal and shear contributions of both viscous and turbulent deformation works have been analyzed and employed to explain the generation of total pressure losses in the separated flow region, where the generation and amplification of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability induces the separated shear layer roll-up, thus the bubble reattachment. Results obtained for different Reynolds number conditions have been employed for the formulation of a loss scaling procedure involving the separated shear layer thickness, which is directly correlated to the dynamics of Kelvin–Helmholtz roll-up vortices.  相似文献

Vortical structures and instability mechanisms of the unsteady free surface wave-induced separation around a surface-piercing NACA0024 foil at a Froude number of 0.37 and a Reynolds number of 1.52×106 are studied using an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) code with a blended k?ε/k?ω turbulence model and a free surface tracking method. At the free surface, the separated flow reattaches to the foil surface resulting in a wall-bounded separation bubble. The mean and instantaneous flow topologies in the separation region are similar to the owl-face pattern. The initial shear-layer instability, the Karman-like instability, and the flapping instability are identified, and their scaling and physical mechanisms are studied. Validation with experimental fluid dynamics (EFD) and comparison with complementary detached-eddy simulation (DES) indicate that URANS resolves part of the organized oscillations due to the large-scale unsteady vortical structures and instabilities, thereby capturing the gross features of the unsteady separation. The URANS solutions show an initial amplitude defect of 30% for the free surface oscillations where the shear layer separates, and the defect progressively increases downstream as URANS rapidly dissipates the rolled up vortices.  相似文献

This paper identifies laminar separation bubbles at the root or span-wise midsection of a rectangular wing using direct surface pressure measurements in the wind tunnel and analyses their behavior at different Reynolds numbers and angles of attack. The separation, transition, and reattachment locations are determined as functions of the angles of attack and the Reynolds number. The transition structure and turbulence characteristics in the separated shear layer are studied using laser Doppler velocimetry. Surface pressure data and simultaneously acquired velocity signals are correlated to show the pattern of growing disturbances in the shear layer. Surface oil flow visualizations clarified the wingtip and separation bubble’s interactions near the leading edge of the wing at the higher angles of attack. Turbulence statistics are also calculated from the streamwise velocity distributions, and an apparent deviation is observed for the skewness and flatness values from the normal distributions in the near-wall region. The separation bubble effect on aerodynamic coefficients of a 3D rectangular wing root section is studied and reported.

The present paper deals with the experimental analysis of a strong decelerated turbulent boundary layer developed on a flat plate. The aim of the study was to examine the effects of pressure gradient on a non-equilibrium boundary layer while indicating local areas of equilibrium flow. The effect of the Reynolds number on a turbulent boundary layer developed with matching the external pressure gradient conditions was also analysed. The emphasis was on the analysis of mean flow statistics i.e. mean velocity profiles, streamwise Reynolds stress and the effect of large- and small-scale interactions by analysing the skewness factor and energy isocontours maps. The comparative analysis of the external data indicated that the structure of the turbulent boundary layer depends not only on local effects of pressure gradient but also on the upstream history of the flow. For the same condition of pressure gradient, the increased momentum is observed near the wall with the increase of the Reynolds number at the Incipient Detachment, where increased turbulence production is also observed, leading to the failure of the outer scaling methods. Surprisingly, the effect of the Reynolds number decays at the intermittent transitory detachment where similar profiles were observed. The upper inflection point in the mean profile corresponded well with the outer maximum of the Reynolds stress and zero crossing of skewness factor. Position of this point occurs at different locations, depending on the flow history effects. The last observation demonstrates that the inflection points results from large- and small-scale interactions, which led to the increased convection velocity of small scales near the wall.  相似文献

Measurements using stereo particle image velocimetry are presented for a developing turbulent boundary layer in a wind tunnel with a Mach 2.75 free stream. As the boundary layer exits from the tunnel nozzle and moves through the wave-free test section, small initial departures from equilibrium turbulence relax, and the boundary layer develops toward the equilibrium zero-pressure-gradient form. This relaxation process is quantified by comparison of first and second order mean, fluctuation, and gradient statistics to classical inner and outer layer scalings. Simultaneous measurement of all three instantaneous velocity components enables direct assessment of the complete turbulence anisotropy tensor. Profiles of the turbulence Mach number show that, despite the M = 2.75 free stream, the incompressibility relation among spatial gradients in the velocity fluctuations applies. This result is used in constructing various estimates of the measured-dissipation rate, comparisons among which show only remarkably small differences over most of the boundary layer. The resulting measured-dissipation profiles, together with measured profiles of the turbulence kinetic energy and mean-flow gradients, enable an assessment of how the turbulence anisotropy relaxes toward its equilibrium zero-pressure-gradient state. The results suggest that the relaxation of the initially disturbed turbulence anisotropy profile toward its equilibrium zero-pressure-gradient form begins near the upper edge of the boundary layer and propagates downward through the defect layer.  相似文献

Particle image velocimetry is used to investigate the interaction between an incident shock wave and a turbulent boundary layer at Mach 2.1. A particle response assessment establishes the fidelity of the tracer particles. The undisturbed boundary layer is characterized in detail. The mean velocity field of the interaction shows the incident and reflected shock wave pattern, as well as the boundary layer distortion. Significant reversed flow is measured instantaneously, although, on average no reversed flow is observed. The interaction instantaneously exhibits a multi-layered structure, namely, a high-velocity outer region and a low-velocity inner region. Flow turbulence shows the highest intensity in the region beneath the impingement of the incident shock wave. The turbulent fluctuations are found to be highly anisotropic, with the streamwise component dominating. A distinct streamwise-oriented region of relatively large kinematic Reynolds shear stress magnitude appears within the lower half of the redeveloping boundary layer. Boundary layer recovery towards initial equilibrium conditions appears to be a gradual process.  相似文献
