We study stochastic games with countable state space, compact action spaces, and limiting average payoff. ForN-person games, the existence of an equilibrium in stationary strategies is established under a certain Liapunov stability condition. For two-person zero-sum games, the existence of a value and optimal strategies for both players are established under the same stability condition.The authors wish to thank Prof. T. A method of region analysis is developed for solving a class of optimal control problems with one state and one control variable, including state and control constraints. The performance index is strictly convex with respect to the control variable, while this variable appears only linearly in the state equation. The convexity or linearity assumption of the performance index or the state equation with respect to the state variable is not required.The author would like to express his sincere gratitude to Prof. R. The fundamental constant of Grothendieck's inequality, defined below, was shown by Grothendieck to be less than sinh π/2=2.301+. We improve the bound slightly, and show that for the positive definite case π/2 suffices. A 3-net is said to be 2-transitive if it admits a group of direction-preserving automorphisms fixing one of the transversal lines and acting 2-transitively on its points. We classify the 2-transitive finite 3-nets which do not admit a proper 2-transitive 3-subnet, except, possibly, for a subnet of order 2. Numerical results are obtained on sequential and parallel versions of ABS algorithms for linear systems for both full matrices andq-band matrices. The results using the sequential algorithm on full matrices indicate the superiority of a particular implementation of the symmetric algorithm. The condensed form of the algorithm is well suited for implementation in a parallel environment, and results obtained on the IBM 4381 system favor a synchronous implementation over the asynchronous one. Results are obtained from sequential implementations of theLU, Cholesky, and symmetric algorithms of the ABS class forq-band matrices able to reduce memory storage. A simple parallelization of do-loops for calculating components gives interesting performances.This work has been developed in the framework of a collaboration between IBM-ECSEC, Rome, Italy, and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Bergamo, Bergamo, Italy.The author is grateful to Prof. J.
