We report the investigations of thermally induced third-order nonlinear optical and optical limiting characterizations for various concentrations of acid blue 40 dye in N,N-Dimethyl Formamide, studied by employing z-scan technique under cw He–Ne laser irradiation at 633 nm wavelength. The samples exhibited nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction under the experimental conditions. For lower concentration, the samples display both saturable absorption (SA) and reverse saturable absorption (RSA); whereas with increase in concentration, RSA behaviour prevails. The estimated values of the effective coefficients of nonlinear absorption βeff, nonlinear refraction n2 and third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ(3) were found to be of the order of 10?2 cm/W, 10?4 esu and 10?6 esu respectively. Multiple diffraction rings were observed when the samples were exposed to laser beam due to refractive index change and thermal lensing. The effect of concentration and the laser intensity on the self-diffraction ring patterns was studied experimentally. The acid blue 40 dye also exhibited strong optical limiting properties under cw excitation and reverse saturable absorption is found to be the dominant nonlinear optical process leading to the observed nonlinear behaviour.  相似文献

Solid-state dye-doped polymers are an attractive alternative to the conventional liquid-dye solutions. The search for new materials which have potential application in optoelectronic devices has lead us to probe the organic dyes. The solid state being a better medium when compared to a liquid medium has lead to the incorporation of dyes in the polymer matrix. The study of nonlinear characteristics of dyes in polymeric media is essential for developing such potential application devices. In this paper, the third-order nonlinear optical properties of three dyes from the Triarylmethane family were measured in 1-Butanol and in dye-doped polymer films by the Z-scan technique using a cw diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. The Z-scan technique has also been used to present the observation of a nonlinear refractive index resulting from the photochromism of one of the dyes. These materials exhibit a large negative optical nonlinearity resulting due to the thermal effect. The relative contributions from the nonlinear absorption (NLA) and nonlinear refraction (NLR) are dependent on the chemical structure and linear absorption of the dyes. The dyes exhibited a nonlinear refractive coefficient n 2, a nonlinear absorption coefficient β, and susceptibility x(3) on the order of 10?8 cm2/W, 10?4 cm/W, and 10?6 esu, respectively, in both liquid and solid media. The results show that these dyes have potential applications in nonlinear optics.  相似文献

The NLO properties of L-asparaginium picrate (LASP) crystals have been measured. The measurements were performed using a SHG diode-pumped laser at 532-nm wavelengths by employing the Z-scan technique. The nonlinear refractive index is found to be on the order of 10?8 cm2/W. Using microwave‐assisted synthesis method, a series of paramagnetic ionic liquids comprising 1‐vinyl‐3‐alkylimidazolium VRIM+ cation and tetrahalogenidoferrate (III) FeClmBr4 ? m? anion were designed and synthesized. The structure was analyzed using 1H NMR and Raman spectroscopy. Ultraviolet–visible absorption spectra, thermal stability, magnetic susceptibility, viscosity, ionic conductivity, and solubility were characterized. Results show that elongation of the alkyl chain leads to replacement of bromides with a small amount of chlorides in the anion, shifting of UV maximum absorption peaks to shorter wavelengths, reduction of ionic conductivity, and solubility in polar solvents, as well as increase in fluidity, magnetic susceptibility, and solubility in nonpolar solvents. A novel chalcone derivative, (2E)-1-(2,4-di- chloro-5-fluorophenyl)-3-[4-dimethylamino)phenyl]prop-2-en-1-one, abbreviated as NNDC, was prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, infrared (IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectrum, and thermal analyses. The NNDC-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films with five different doping concentrations by weight were prepared by using a spin-coating method. Their linear optical properties were investigated by using a prism coupling measuring system. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of NNDC in 1,2-dichloroethane (NNDC/1,2-dichloroethane) solution and NNDC-doped PMMA (NNDC/PMMA) films were investigated by using the laser Z-scan technique with 20 ps pulses at 532 nm. A self-focusing effect was observed from the Z-scan curves for solution and thin films and the nonlinear refractive index of the film increases with the increase of the doping concentration. In addition, nonlinear absorption was negligible for all samples. The magnitude of third-order nonlinear refraction index n 2 and the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ (3) for thin films were 10−15 m2/W and 10−9 esu, respectively, which are about three orders larger than that of NNDC/1,2-dichloroethane solution. Some necessary analyses were presented. The results show that this material is a promising candidate for application in the nonlinear optical devices at 532 nm.  相似文献

An organometallic complex, bis(tetra-n-propylammonium)bis(2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)cuprate(II), [(C3H7)4N]2[Cu(dmit)2] (dmit2?=4,5-dithiolate-1,3-dithiole-2-thione), abbreviated as PrCu, was synthesized. The films of PrCu were prepared using spin coating method. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of PrCu in acetone solution and PMMA films were investigated by Z-scan technique at 1064 nm with laser duration of 20 ps. The Z-scan spectra reveal that the composite films exhibit large negative nonlinear refractive indices of the order of 10?15 m2/W, which are three orders larger than that in acetone solution. The nonlinear absorption coefficients were calculated to be 9.416×10?10 m/W. For the composite films, the figure of merit, W and T, meet the requirement of all-optical switching devices. The experimental results show that the PrCu-doped PMMA films have potential applications for nonlinear optical devices.  相似文献

A novel organometallic compound, ethyltriphenylphosphonium bis(2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)aurate (III), abbreviated as TPEPADT, was synthesized. The TPEPADT doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin film with a mass fraction of 1% (1 wt.%) was prepared by using a spin-coating method. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of TPEPADT in acetonitrile solution and TPEPADT-doped PMMA thin film were investigated by using the laser Z-scan technique at the wavelength 1064 nm with laser duration of 20 ps. The linear refractive index of the polymer thin film was also studied. The Z-scan curves revealed that both TPEPADT in acetonitrile solution and the polymer thin film possessed negative nonlinear refraction, exhibiting a self-defocusing effect and nonlinear absorption was negligible under the experimental conditions used. The nonlinear refractive index was calculated to be ?1.9 × 10?18 m2/W for TPEPADT in acetonitrile solution and ?8.9 × 10?15 m2/W for the polymer thin film. These results suggest that TPEPADT have potential for the application of all-optical switching devices.  相似文献

The third-order nonlinear optical properties of Methyl violet 2B dye in ethanol and a dye-doped polymer film were measured by the Z-scan technique. This material exhibits a negative optical nonlinearity. The dye exhibited a nonlinear refractive coefficient (n 2 = ?4.14 × 10?7 and ?4.291 × 10?7 cm2/W in liquid and solid media, respectively), nonlinear absorption coefficient (β = ?4.634 × 10?3 and ?4.66 × 10?3 cm/W in liquid and solid media, respectively), and susceptibility (χ(3) = 1.88 × 10?5 and 1.963 × 10?5 esu in liquid and solid media, respectively). These results show that Methyl violet 2B dye has potential applications in nonlinear optics.  相似文献

E,E-2,5-bis[2-(3-pyridyl)ethenyl]pyrazine (BPEP) has been prepared by aldol condensation between 2,5-dimethylpyrazine and pyridine-3-carboxaldehyde. It is characterized by IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The electronic absorption and emission properties of BPEP were studied in different solvents. BPEP displays a slight solvatochromic effect of the absorption and emission spectrum, indicating a small change in dipole moment of BPEP upon excitation. The dye solutions (1 × 10?4 M) in CHCl3, EtOH and dioxane give laser emission in blue region upon excitation by a 337.1 nm nitrogen pulse (λ = 337 nm). The tuning range, gain coefficient (α) and emission cross – section (σe) have been determined. Ground and excited states electronic geometric optimizations were performed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), respectively. A DFT natural bond analysis complemented the ICT. The simulated maximum absorption and emission wavelengths are in line the observed ones in trend, and are proportionally red-shifted with the increase of the solvent polarity. The stability, hardness and electrophilicity of BPEP in different solvents were correlated with the polarity of the elected solvents. BPEP dye displays fluorescence quenching by colloidal silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The fluorescence data reveal that radiative and non-radiative energy transfer play a major role in the fluorescence quenching mechanism.  相似文献

This work reports giant optical nonlinearity of active gain composites containing metal nanoparticles. In the epsilon‐near‐zero regime, the effective index of the composite strongly depends on the magnitude of host material's saturable gain and one can obtain unity‐order nonlinear optical index change for the pump with gain saturation intensity. For pump intensity of about 100 kW/cm2, the nonlinear refractive index (the refractive index change per unit pump intensity) reaches 10?5 cm2/W, which is 6–8 orders‐of‐magnitude larger than the records recently obtained in epsilon‐near‐zero bulk materials. If the gain value of the host medium is slightly larger than a critical value, such large optical nonlinearity can be obtained without loss or even accompanying with amplification. The proposed materials also have the advantage of wide tunability of operating wavelength range from visible to infrared by changing the gain value of the host and the shape parameters and filling factors of metal nanoparticles.  相似文献

The third-order nonlinear optical properties of the Aniline Blue dye in ethanol and a dye-doped polymer film were measured by the Z-scan technique using a 632.8-nm He-Ne laser. This material exhibits a negative optical non-linearity. The dye at a 0.4-mM concentration exhibited a nonlinear refractive coefficient (n 2 = ?4.02 × 10?8 and ?4.41 × 10?8 cm2/W in liquid and solid media, respectively), a nonlinear absorption coefficient (β = ?9.7 × 10?4 and ?11.63 × 10?4 cm/W in liquid and solid media, respectively), and susceptibility (x (3) = 1.844 × 10?6 and 2.028 × 10?6 esu in liquid and solid media, respectively). The electronic absorption spectra of 3-(3 N-arylidenehydrazino-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl) coumarin III are investigated in organic solvents of varying polarities and buffer solutions of different PH. The behaviour of the latter is utilized in calculating pka values of these compounds. The important bands in the IR spectra and the main 1H NMR signals are assigned and discussed in relation to molecular structure. A 4-(4,6-diaminopyrimidin-2-ylthio) substituted double-decker Lu(III) phthalocyanines (4) have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis and 1H NMR spectroscopies. The nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear absorption and the optical limiting (OL) performance of the compound 4 in a 0.5 mm spectroscopic cell in DMF solution were investigated by using 4 ns pulse laser at 532 nm. Z-scan experiments have been conducted between 0.24 and 2.39 GW/cm2 peak intensities for 10 Hz repetition rate and also between 2.39 and 23.89 GW/cm2 peak intensities for 1 Hz repetition rate. The thermal effect contributes to the nonlinear response of the material higher than 0.72 GW/cm2 peak intensity at 10 Hz. We measured the effective nonlinear refractive index of the material as 1.2×10−11 esu at 3.5×10−4 M concentration with the peak intensity less than 0.72 GW/cm2 and we found that nonlinear absorption was very small. On the other hand, when concentration is increased to 2.4×10−3 M material's nonlinear absorption becomes dominant mechanism for the nonlinear response and the compound 4 indicates OL behavior at 2.4×10−3 M concentration.  相似文献

The optical nonlinearity of styryl7 dye in ethanol solution at different concentrations has been studied using pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm as the source of excitation. The optical responses were characterized by measuring the intensity dependent refractive index (n2) of the medium using the Z-scan technique. The open aperture Z-scan trace of the dye in solution displayed saturable absorption. The closed aperture Z-scan trace of the dye exhibited a negative nonlinearity. The styryl7 dye at 1 mM concentration exhibited nonlinear refractive co-efficient n2 = −1.24 × 10−8 cm2/W, nonlinear absorption coefficient β = − 3.9 × 10−4 cm/W and real and imaginary parts of third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ3 = 3.26 × 10−6 esu in ethanol. These results showed that the dye has potential application in nonlinear optics.  相似文献

The saturated nonlinear absorption and Kerr nonlinearities of an aqueous pseudoisocyanine solution are investigated at the wavelengths of 532 and 529 nm with the use of pulsed laser radiation of different duration (8 ns and 475 fs). The measured values of the nonlinear refractive indices amount to ?6×10?12 (t=8 ns) and ?8×10?14 cm2W?1 (t=475 fs). The change in self-action effects in pseudoisocyanine from self-defocusing to self-focusing revealed in the case of increasing intensity of femtosecond laser pulses is attributed to the effect of a fifth-order nonlinear optical process. The nonlinear refractive index responsible for this process amounts to 4×10?24 cm4 W?2. The imaginary part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility, responsible for the induced transparency of the pseudoisocyanine solution, is Imχ (3)=?2×10?12 esu. Temporal changes in the shape of nanosecond laser pulses due to the nonlinear refraction induced by a thermal process are analyzed.  相似文献

The nonlinear optical properties of the poly1,4-diazophenylene-bridged-tris(8-hydroxy-quinoline) aluminum (PDPAlq3) solution were studied using single beam Z-scan technique with a continuous-wave Diode laser radiation at 657.2 nm with 10 Hz repetition rate. The results show that the solution of PDPAlq3 exhibits large nonlinear refractive index (n2 = −1.7642 × 10−12 m2/W) and nonlinear absorption coefficient (β = 1.12 × 10−6 m/W). The negative sign of the nonlinear refractive index n2 indicates that the material exhibits self-defocusing optical nonlinearity. The evaluation of the figure of merit (W = 1.8) shows that the solution of PDPAlq3 is sufficient for application in all-optical switching technology. These results show that the solution of PDPAlq3 have potential application in nonlinear optics.  相似文献

Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3:Eu ferroelectric films were deposited on quartz substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The linear absorption coefficient and the linear refractive index calculated from the transmission spectrum at 532 nm were found to be 1.67×104 cm?1 and 1.82 respectively. The room temperature photoluminescence shows the characteristic emission of Eu3+ ions. The nonlinear optical properties of the film were investigated by a single beam Z-scan setup. The negative nonlinear refractive index and two photon absorption coefficient was found to be ?1.508×10?6 m2/GW and 240 m/GW respectively. The real and imaginary part of the third order susceptibility of the thin films is 2.58×10?17 m2/V2 and 1.16×10?16 m2/V2 respectively.
