Let be a unital simple -algebra with real rank zero. It is shown that if satisfies a so-called fundamental comparison property, then has tracial topological rank zero. Combining some previous results, it is shown that a unital simple -algebra with real rank zero, stable rank one and weakly unperforated must have slow dimension growth.

We study the cohomology of a locally finite, connected, cocommutative Hopf algebra over . Specifically, we are interested in those algebras for which is generated as an algebra by and . We shall call such algebras semi-Koszul. Given a central extension of Hopf algebras with monogenic and semi-Koszul, we use the Cartan-Eilenberg spectral sequence and algebraic Steenrod operations to determine conditions for to be semi-Koszul. Special attention is given to the case in which is the restricted universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra obtained from the mod- lower central series of a -group. We show that the algebras arising in this way from extensions by of an abelian -group are semi-Koszul. Explicit calculations are carried out for algebras arising from rank 2 -groups, and it is shown that these are all semi-Koszul for .

We give three kinds of characterizations of the commutativity of C- algebras. The first is the one from operator monotone property of functions regarded as the nonlinear version of Stinespring theorem, the second one is the characterization of commutativity of local type from expansion formulae of related functions and the third one is of global type from multiple positivity of those nonlinear positive maps induced from functions.

We study a filtration on the group of homotopy classes of self maps of a compact Lie group associated with homotopy groups. We determine these filtrations of and completely. We introduce two natural invariants and defined by the filtration, where is a prime number, and compute the invariants for simple Lie groups in the cases where Lie groups are -regular or quasi -regular. We apply our results to the groups of self homotopy equivalences.

We introduce a new class of -algebras, which is a generalization of both graph algebras and homeomorphism -algebras. This class is very large and also very tractable. We prove the so-called gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem, and compute the -groups of our algebras.

We investigate algebraic -actions of entropy rank one, namely those for which each element has finite entropy. Such actions can be completely described in terms of diagonal actions on products of local fields using standard adelic machinery. This leads to numerous alternative characterizations of entropy rank one, both geometric and algebraic. We then compute the measure entropy of a class of skew products, where the fiber maps are elements from an algebraic -action of entropy rank one. This leads, via the relative variational principle, to a formula for the topological entropy of continuous skew products as the maximum of a finite number of topological pressures. We use this to settle a conjecture concerning the relational entropy of commuting toral automorphisms.

The sentences asserting the existence of invariants for mathematical structures are usually third order ones. We develop a general approach to analyzing the strength of such statements in second order arithmetic in the spirit of reverse mathematics. We discuss a number of simple examples that are equivalent to ACA. Our major results are that the existence of elementary equivalence invariants for Boolean algebras and isomorphism invariants for dense Boolean algebras are both of the same strength as ACA. This system corresponds to the assertion that (the arithmetic jump of ) exists for every set . These are essentially the first theorems known to be of this proof theoretic strength. The proof begins with an analogous result about these invariants on recursive (dense) Boolean algebras coding .

We investigate the relations between the cut number, and the first Betti number, of -manifolds We prove that the cut number of a ``generic' -manifold is at most This is a rather unexpected result since specific examples of -manifolds with large and are hard to construct. We also prove that for any complex semisimple Lie algebra there exists a -manifold with and Such manifolds can be explicitly constructed.

We show that every unital linear bijection which preserves the maximal left ideals from a semi-simple Banach algebra onto a C-algebra of real rank zero is a Jordan isomorphism. Furthermore, every unital self-adjoint linear bijection on a countably decomposable factor von Neumann algebra is maximal left ideal preserving if and only if it is a *-automorphism.

A compact, connected, simple Lie group localized at an odd prime is shown to be homotopy equivalent to a product of homotopy associative, homotopy commutative spaces, provided the rank of is low. This holds for , for example, if . The homotopy equivalence is usually just as spaces, not multiplicative spaces. Nevertheless, the strong multiplicative features of the factors can be used to prove useful properties, which after looping can be transferred multiplicatively to . This is applied to prove useful information about the torsion in the homotopy groups of , including an upper bound on its exponent.

We demonstrate that, for vertex operator algebras of CFT type, -cofiniteness and rationality is equivalent to regularity. For -cofinite vertex operator algebras, we show that irreducible weak modules are ordinary modules and -cofinite, is -cofinite, and the fusion rules are finite.

Let be a noncompact semisimple Lie group and an arbitrary discrete, torsion-free subgroup of . Let be the bottom of the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the locally symmetric space , and let be the exponent of growth of . If has rank , then these quantities are related by a well-known formula due to Elstrodt, Patterson, Sullivan and Corlette. In this note we generalize that relation to the higher rank case by estimating from above and below by quadratic polynomials in . As an application we prove a rigiditiy property of lattices.
