Using differential capacity and chronocoulometry, we have studied the electrosorption of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) on polycrystalline gold electrode surfaces. Our results indicate that the orientation of DMAP is highly dependent on the electrode potential and electrolyte pH. At pH values at or above the primary pKa, the adsorbed species is DMAP and orients vertically on the electrode surface via the lone pair of electrons on the pyridine ring's nitrogen atom. At very low pH values (<3) the adsorbed species is the protonated ion, DMAPH+, which can be desorbed from the electrode surface when the metal's surface charge density is made appreciably positive of the potential of zero charge. At intermediate electrolyte pH, either DMAP or DMAPH+ is adsorbed on the surface depending on the electrode's potential. At negative charge densities, DMAPH+ lies nearly flat on the gold electrode and the surface coverage is correspondingly low. When the electrode is positively charged, the adsorbate undergoes a phase transition to a vertical orientation and is simultaneously deprotonated to DMAP. Our results rationalize the stability of DMAP-ligated gold nanoparticles as a function of pH and demonstrate that the ligand's surface coverage is the principal factor in determining the stability of the colloidal system.  相似文献

Here, we report on a facile method for the preparation of an aqueous dispersion of 3.6 nm gold nanoparticles electrostatically stabilized by a weakly physisorbed ligand, namely, 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP). The nature and extent of the interaction of this ligand with the surface of a gold nanoparticle has been examined. We also report on the thermally promoted ripening of these nanoparticles under mild conditions to yield a dispersion of 11.3 nm gold nanoparticles. The role of the weakly physisorbed DMAP ligand in facilitating thermally promoted ripening under mild conditions has also been examined.  相似文献

Gold nanoparticles of 5 nm diameter, stabilized by 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP), were coated with poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) via electrostatic self-assembly. The suspension stability, monitored by the gold surface plasmon band (SPB), was studied by varying the pH, the PSS chain length, and PSS concentration. Enhanced stability is obtained at pH 10 (above the pKa of DMAP) when the polymer chain length matches or exceeds the particle circumference. Solid state 13C NMR was used to determine the presence of DMAP and polymers after subsequent deposition of weak and strong polycations: poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC). At pH 10, DMAP remains associated with the nanoparticle after the first PSS layer has been formed. When PAH or PDADMAC are subsequently added at pH 4.5, DMAP is expelled, the suspensions remain stable, and zeta potential values indicate complete charge reversal. In the case of PDADMAC, however, the first layer of PSS is not fully retained. When PDADMAC is added at pH 10, DMAP and the first PSS layer are retained but lower zeta potentials and a higher SPB shift indicate a degraded stability. For PAH addition at pH 9.5, both DMAP and PSS are expelled and the suspension becomes unstable. These differences in stability of the multilayer components and the nanoparticle suspension are rationalized in terms of chain flexibility, polymer charge density, and the ability of the polymer functional groups to directly interact with the gold surface.  相似文献

We demonstrate a phase transfer method to create stable colloidal solutions of Au nanoparticles with 4-methoxypyridine ligands. We then investigate the adsorption behavior of 4-methoxypyridine onto gold surfaces by Raman spectroscopy, DFT calculations, and (1)H NMR. In contrast to unsubstituted pyridine and the frequently used (N,N-dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP), a flat adsorption of 4-methoxypyridine on gold was found.  相似文献

The solubility of charged nanoparticles is critically dependent on pH. However, the concentration range available with bases such as NaOH is quite narrow, since the particles precipitate due to compression of the electric double layer when the ionic strength is increased. The stability of mercaptoundecanoic acid-capped Au nanoparticles is studied at a set pH using the hydroxide as base and different cations of various sizes. The counterions used are sodium (Na(+)), tetramethylammonium (TMA(+)), tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)), and tetrabutylammonium (TBA(+)). The particles precipitate in the 70-90 mM range with Na(+) as the counterion, but with quaternary ammonium hydroxides the particles are stable even in concentrations exceeding 1 M. The change in solubility is linked to a strongly adsorbed layer on the surface of the ligand shell of the nanoparticles. The increased concentration range obtained with TEAOH is further used to facilitate thiol exchange which occurs at a greater extent than would be achieved in NaOH solution.  相似文献

Gold nanoparticles of variable sizes have been synthesized in toluene employing two-phase (water-toluene) extraction of AuCl4- followed by its reduction with sodium borohydride in the presence of a series of cationic surfactants of a homologous series having the general formula C(n)TAC. The solubility features of the gold particles in the organic solvent have been accounted qualitatively by calculating the van der Waals interaction potential between the particles. The effect of thermal energy and medium dielectric constant on the stability of metal particles has been studied by measuring the surface plasmon resonance. The stabilization of surfactant-mediated gold particles as hydrosol or organosol has been elucidated by considering the double-layer interaction as a function of the dielectric constant of the solvent medium. The influence of the counterion of the phase transfer reagent and stabilizing ligand on the photochemical stability of the gold colloids has been investigated. The fluorescence probe 1-methylaminopyrene (MAP) was considered for the surface functionalization of the gold particles, and it has been found that there is an enhancement of molecular fluorescence from the gold-probe assembly.  相似文献

Amphiphilic gold nanoparticles grafted with V-shaped brushes (Au-V-brushes) were prepared by grafting a polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) block copolymer with a trithiocarbonate group as the junction to the Au surface. The obtained Au-V-brushes were subjected to solubility test and UV-vis, FT-IR, TEM and DLS characterizations. It is found that the Au-V-brushes are soluble in both water and organic solvents. In the common solvent DMF, the size of the Au-V-brushes is about 17 nm, whereas in selective solvents (toluene and water) aggregates of 70-90 nm are formed. Phase transfer of the Au-V-brushes from the water phase into the toluene phase occurs upon addition of Na(2)SO(4) into water and the Au-V-brushes can also transfer from the toluene phase to the interface of toluene and water phases after addition of citric acid in the water phase.  相似文献

This paper describes reactions in which ligands are exchanged and metals are transferred between monolayer-protected metal clusters (MPCs) that are in different phases (heterophase exchange) or are in the same phase. For example, contact of toluene solutions of alkanethiolate-coated gold MPCs with aqueous solutions of tiopronin-coated gold MPCs yields toluene-phase MPCs that have some tiopronin ligands and aqueous-phase MPCs that have some alkanethiolate ligands. In a second example, heterophase transfer reactions occur between toluene solutions of alkanethiolate-coated gold MPCs and aqueous solutions of tiopronin-coated silver MPCs, in which tiopronin ligands are transferred to the former and gold metal to the latter phase. These ligand and metal exchange reactions are inhibited when conducted under N(2). The results implicate participation of an oxidized form of Au (such as a Au(I) thiolate, Au(I)-SR) as both a ligand and metal carrier in the exchange reactions. Au(I)-SR is demonstrated to be an exchange catalyst.  相似文献

In this report, we demonstrated a novel efficient post-modification route for preparation of smart hybrid gold nanoparticles with poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) based on RAFT and click chemistry. A new azide terminated ligand was first synthesized to modify gold nanoparticles by ligand exchange reaction, and then click reaction was used to graft alkyne terminated P4VP which was prepared by RAFT onto the surface of gold nanoparticles. The functionalized hybrid gold nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, FTIR, and XPS etc. The results indicated that the P4VP was successfully grafted onto the surface of gold nanoparticles by click reaction. The surface grafting density was calculated to be about 6 chains/nm2. In addition, the hybrid gold nanoparticles showed a pH responsive phenomenon as the pH value changed around 5.  相似文献

Gold nanotubes of small particle sizes down to 5 nm and high aspect ratios were synthesized in ion track etched polycarbonate following a rational reaction design. 4-(Dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) was employed to adjust the electroless deposition by interfering with the autocatalytically active gold surface. Modification of the pH value and DMAP concentration led to a wide range of products which were characterized by SEM, TEM, and EDS. Filigree nanotubes of 10-15 nm wall thickness and 5.0 ± 2.1 nm grain size were obtained as well as robust and free-standing structures proving homogeneous deposition along the whole template length of 30 μm. Template-supported gold nanotubes were applied in the UV-vis monitored reduction of 4-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride under pseudo-first-order conditions. They proved to be a reliable microfluidic system of excellent catalytic activity coming up with an apparent rate constant of 1.3 × 10(-2) s(-1). Despite a high flow rate, the reaction showed 99% conversion after a distance of just 60 μm.  相似文献

Nanometer dimension of citrate-capped gold nanoparticles can be firmly bound with various functionalized polymer-modified glass plate and indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates. Herein we report 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, polyvinyl pyridine, polyethylene imines, etc. as binding agents to modify these substrates to stabilize the charged colloidal gold nanoparticles through electrostatic stabilization of gold nanoparticles. When gold nanoparticles pretreated substrate are exposed into the seeding growth solution, the preadsorbed gold nanoparticles grow further and then form nanoislands of gold on glass and ITO substrates. The formation of nanoislands on microscope glass slide and ITO was monitored with UV-visible spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and atomic force microscopy methods. The gold nanoislands and gold nanoparticles pretreated substrates can be used as platform to study the self-assembling behavior of long chain alkanethiols such as C12SH, C16SH, and C18SH. The binding, coverage, and electron transfer characteristics of monolayer assembly on modified gold nanoisland and nanoparticles modified substrates are studied using electrochemical studies. The gold substrates can be prepared by this method, which is simple and reproducible and can be applied to various sensor and electrocatalytic applications.  相似文献

In this study, we describe a new strategy for producing narrowly dispersed functional colloidal particles stabilized by a nanocomposite with hydrophilic clay faces and hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) brushes on the edges. This method involves preparation of polymer brushes on the edges of clay layers and Pickering suspension polymerization of styrene in the presence of the nanocomposites. PS brushes on the edges of clay layers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization. X‐ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that PS chains were grafted to the edges of clay platelets. Transmission electron microscope results showed that different morphologies of clay‐PS particles could be obtained in different solvents. In water, clay‐PS particles aggregated together, in which PS chains collapsed forming nanosized hydrophobic domains and hydrophilic clay faces stayed in aqueous phase. In toluene, clay‐PS particles formed face‐to‐face structure. Narrowly dispersed PS colloidal particles stabilized by clay‐PS were prepared by suspension polymerization. Because of the negatively charged clay particles on the surface, the zeta potential of the PS colloidal particles was negative. Positively charged poly(2‐vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) chains were adsorbed to the surface of PS colloidal particles in aqueous solution at a low pH value, and gold nanoparticles were prepared in P2VP brushes. Such colloidal particles may find important applications in a variety of fields including waterborne adhesives, paints, catalysis of chemical reactions, and protein separation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The surface ligand composition of CdSe nanoparticles prepared using technical grade tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO) was investigated using a nucleophilic ligand displacement methodology and (31)P {(1)H} NMR spectroscopy. 4-(N,N-Dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) and benzyltrimethylammonium propionate were added to tetrahydrofuran solutions of CdSe nanoparticles prepared in technical grade TOPO. DMAP was shown to be a sufficiently strong nucleophile to displace the more weakly coordinating ligands, TOPO, TOPSe, di-n-octylphosphinate, and n-octylphosphonate (OPA). Benzyltrimethylammonium propionate was shown to be a stronger nucleophile than DMAP in that it could displace all the aforementioned surface-bound ligands as well as a previously unidentified surface-bound phosphorus species. Independent synthesis and (31)P {(1)H} NMR spectral matching confirmed that the new species was P,P'-(di-n-octyl) dihydrogen pyrophosphonic acid (PPA). The PPA was shown to form during the nanoparticle synthesis via the dehydrative condensation of OPA. CdSe nanoparticle syntheses were performed using pure TOPO and added OPA, and subsequent displacement experiments showed that OPA and PPA were the predominant surface-bound ligands. CdSe nanoparticle syntheses were performed using pure TOPO and added PPA, and subsequent displacement experiments showed that PPA was the predominant surface-bound ligand. PPA was also shown to have the greatest affinity for the nanoparticle surface of all the ligands investigated. Thus, a model for the surface ligand composition could be developed for nanoparticles prepared using technical grade TOPO or other high-boiling solvents with added acidic phosphorus compounds.  相似文献

This work demonstrates luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) sensors based on lanthanide‐doped nanoparticles as donors (D) and gold nanoparticles as acceptors (A), combined through electrostatic interactions between the oppositely charged nanoparticles. Negatively charged lanthanide‐doped nanoparticles, YVO4:Eu and LaPO4:Ce,Tb, with high luminescence quantum yield and good water‐solubility, are synthesized through a polymer‐assisted hydrothermal method. Positively charged polyhedral and spherical gold nanoparticles exhibit surface plasmon resonance (SPR) bands centered at 623 and 535 nm, respectively. These bands overlap well with the emission of the Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions within the lanthanide nanoparticles. Herein, the gold nanoparticles are synthesized through a seed‐mediated cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)‐assisted method. The assemblies of the oppositely charged donors and acceptors are developed into LRET‐based sensors exhibiting a donor quenching efficiency close to 100 %.  相似文献

The solubility of ca. 5.0 nm gold nanoparticles was studied systematically as a function of ligand shell and solvent. The ligands were octane-, decane-, dodecane- and hexadecanethiols; the solvents were the n-alkanes from hexane to hexadecane and toluene. Supernatant concentrations in equilibrium with precipitated superclusters of nanoparticles were measured at room temperature (23 °C) with UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The solubility of nanoparticles ligated with decane- and dodecanethiol was greatest in n-decane and n-dodecane, respectively. In contrast, the solubility of nanoparticles ligated with octane- and hexadecanethiol showed decreasing solubility with increasing solvent chain length. In addition the solubility of the octanethiol ligated system showed a nonmonotonic solvent carbon number functionality with even numbered solvents being better solvents than neighboring odd numbered solvents.  相似文献

Gold nanoparticles with an average diameter of approximately 20 nm were prepared in an aqueous solution by a wet chemistry method. The parent gold nanoparticles were then capped with a 4-aminothiophenol protecting layer and transferred into toluene by tuning the surface charge of the modified nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles before and after phase transfer were subjected to photofragmentation by a pulsed 532 nm laser. The effects of solvent properties and surface chemistry on the photofragmentation of the gold nanoparticles have been investigated. Fast photofragmentation has been observed in the organic solvent in which the dielectric constant, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity are lower. The results suggest new approaches for the preparation of very small gold clusters from gold nanoparticles.  相似文献

1,10-Phenanthroline (phen) and 1,10-phenanthroline-terminated ruthenium(II) complex [Ru-Lphen](2+) have been used to stabilize and functionalize gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs). The strong interaction between the nitrogen atoms of phen and the surface of Au-NPs allowed for the phase transfer of Au-NPs from toluene to aqueous phase containing [Ru-Lphen](2+). Reverse phase transfer of these Au-NPs from water to acetonitrile by substituting the Cl(-) counter anion by PF(-)(6) has also been demonstrated. Such facile post-functionalization, phase transfer and solvent transfer processes using metallic complexes bearing a terminal phenanthroline pendant group constitute a prerequisite for further studies of the electronic and optical properties of these NCs in various media.  相似文献

An in situ reduction approach to synthesizing gold and silver nanoparticles by using a series of newly designed, redox-active amphiphiles at basic pH is described. These amphiphiles are the conjugates of a fatty acid (e.g., oleic acid, stearic acid, and lauric acid) and a redox-active amino acid (e.g., tryptophan or tyrosine). The amphiphile-coated nanoparticles are then efficiently transferred from water to different nonpolar organic media (such as benzene, toluene, xylene, cyclohexane, and hexane) simply by acid treatment. The phase-transfer process was monitored by UV/visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, and the results showed that the average particle size and size distribution remain almost unchanged after transferring to the organic media. The anchoring of the amphiphile to the nanoparticle surface was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. A mechanism is proposed to describe the stability of colloidal Au and Ag nanoparticles formed in situ and their phase transfer to organic solvents. The presence of the amphiphile increases the thermal stability of the colloidal gold nanoparticle conjugates in organic solvents.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of water-soluble nitric oxide (NO)-releasing monolayer-protected gold clusters (MPCs) are reported. Tiopronin-protected MPCs ( approximately 3 nm) were functionalized with amine ligands and subsequently exposed to 5 atm of NO to form diazeniumdiolate NO donors covalently bound to the gold MPC. Diazeniumdiolate formation conditions, NO-release, and nanoparticle stability were examined as a function of the structure of the protecting ligand, pH, and storage time. Despite their aqueous solubility, proton-initiated decomposition of the diazeniumdiolate-modified Tio-MPCs resulted in only modest NO-release (<0.023 micromol/mg) for short durations (<1.5 h). To increase the NO storage capacity of gold nanoparticles, polyamine-stabilized MPCs ( approximately 5 nm) were synthesized with significantly enhanced NO-release properties (0.386 micromol/mg) and durations (up to 16 h). Transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and UV-vis spectroscopy were used to characterize both nanoparticle systems before and after NO exposure. The MPCs represent the smallest water-soluble NO-release nanoparticles to date (3-5 nm).  相似文献
