The structures, binding energies, and electronic properties of one oxygen atom (O) and two oxygen atoms (2O) adsorption on silicon clusters Si(n) with n ranging from 5 to 10 are studied systematically by ab initio calculations. Twelve stable structures are obtained, two of which are in agreement with those reported in previous literature and the others are new structures that have not been proposed before. Further investigations on the fragmentations of Si(n)O and Si(n)O2 (n = 5-10) clusters indicate that the pathways Si(n)O --> Si(n-1) + SiO and Si(n)O2 --> Si(n-2) + Si2O2 are most favorable from thermodynamic viewpoint. Among the studied silicon oxide clusters, Si8O, Si9O, Si5O2 and Si8O2 correspond to large adsorption energies of silicon clusters with respect to O or 2O, while Si8O, with the smallest dissociation energy, has a tendency to separate into Si7 + SiO. Using the recently developed quasi-atomic minimal-basis-orbital method, we have also calculated the unsaturated valences of the neutral Si(n) clusters. Our calculation results show that the Si atoms which have the largest unsaturated valences are more attractive to O atom. Placing O atom right around the Si atoms with the largest unsaturated valences usually leads to stable structures of the silicon oxide clusters.  相似文献

We have performed systematic ab initio calculations to study the structures and stability of Si(6)O(n)() clusters (n = 1-12) in order to understand the oxidation process in silicon systems. Our calculation results show that oxidation pattern of the small silicon cluster, with continuous addition of O atoms, extends from one side to the entire Si cluster. Si atoms are found to be separated from the pure Si cluster one-by-one by insertion of oxygen into the Si-O bonds. From fragmentation energy analyses, it is found that the Si-rich clusters usually dissociate into a smaller pure Si clusters (Si(5), Si(4), Si(3), or Si(2)), plus oxide fragments such as SiO, Si(2)O(2), Si(3)O(3), Si(3)O(4), and Si(4)O(5). We have also studied the structures of the ionic Si(6)O(n)(+/-) (n = 1-12) clusters and found that most of ionic clusters have different lowest-energy structures in comparison with the neutral clusters. Our calculation results suggest that transformation Si(6)O(n)+(a) + O --> Si(6)O(n+1)+(a) should be easier.  相似文献

Equilibrium geometries, charge distributions, stabilities, and electronic properties of the Ag-adsorbed (SiO(2))(n) (n=1-7) clusters have been investigated using density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation for exchange-correlation functional. The results show that the Ag atom preferably binds to silicon atom with dangling bond in nearly a fixed direction, and the incoming Ag atoms tend to cluster on the existing Ag cluster leading to the formation of Ag islands. The adsorbed Ag atom only causes charge redistributions of the atoms near itself. The effect of the adsorbed Ag atom on the bonding natures and structural features of the silica clusters is minor, attributing to the tendency of stability order of Ag(SiO(2))(n) (n=1-7) clusters in consistent with silica clusters. In addition, the energy gaps between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals remarkably decrease compared with the pure (SiO(2))(n) (n=1-7) clusters, eventually approaching the near infrared radiation region. This suggests that these small clusters may be an alternative material which has a similar functionality in treating cancer to the large gold-coated silica nanoshells and the small Au(3)(SiO(2))(3) cluster.  相似文献

We performed an unbiased search for low-energy structures of medium-sized neutral Si n and Ge n clusters ( n = 25-33) using a genetic algorithm (GA) coupled with tight-binding interatomic potentials. Structural candidates obtained from our GA search were further optimized by first-principles calculations using density functional theory (DFT). Our approach reproduces well the lowest-energy structures of Si n and Ge n clusters of n = 25-29 compared to previous studies, showing the accuracy and reliability of our approach. In the present study, we pay more attention to determine low-lying isomers of Si n and Ge n ( n = 29-33) and study the growth patterns of these clusters. The B3LYP calculations suggest that the growth pattern of Si n ( n = 25-33) clusters undergoes a transition from prolate to cage at n = 31, while this transition appears at n = 26 from the PBE-calculated results. In the size range of 25-33, the corresponding Ge n clusters hold the prolate growth pattern. The relative stabilities and different structural motifs of Si n and Ge n ( n = 25-33) clusters were studied, and the changes of small cluster structures, when acting as building blocks of large clusters, were also discussed.  相似文献

The geometrical and electronic structures of Al(BO(2))(n) and Al(BO(2))(n)(-) (n = 1-4) clusters are computed at different levels of theory including density functional theory (DFT), hybrid DFT, double-hybrid DFT, and second-order perturbation theory. All aluminum borates are found to be quite stable toward the BO(2) and BO(2)(-) loss in the neutral and anion series, respectively. Al(BO(2))(4) belongs to the class of hyperhalogens composed of smaller superhalogens, and should possess a large adiabatic electron affinity (EA(ad)) larger than that of its superhalogen building block BO(2). Indeed, the aluminum tetraborate possesses the EA(ad) of 5.6 eV, which, however, is smaller than the EA(ad) of 7.8 eV of the AlF(4) supehalogen despite BO(2) is more electronegative than F. The EA(ad) decrease in Al(BO(2))(4) is due to the higher thermodynamic stability of Al(BO(2))(4) compared to that of AlF(4). Because of its high EA and thermodynamic stability, Al(BO(2))(4) should be capable of forming salts with electropositive counter ions. We optimized KAl(BO(2))(4) as corresponding to a unit cell of a hypothetical KAl(BO(2))(4) salt and found that specific energy and energy density of such a salt are competitive with those of trinitrotoluol (TNT).  相似文献

Ab initio and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out for zinc-water clusters Zn(n)-(H2O)(m) (n = 1-32 and m = 1-3, where n and m are the numbers of zinc atoms and water molecules, respectively) to elucidate the structure and electronic states of the clusters and the interaction of zinc cluster with water molecules. The binding energies of H2O to zinc clusters were small at n = 2-3 (2.3-4.2 kcal mol(-1)), whereas the energy increased significantly in n = 4 (9.0 kcal mol(-1)). Also, the binding nature of H2O was changed at n = 4. The cluster size dependency of the binding energy of H2O accorded well with that of the natural population of electrons in the 4p orbital of the zinc atom. In the larger clusters (n > 20), it was found that the zinc atoms in surface regions of the zinc cluster have a positive charge, whereas those in the interior region have a negative charge with the large electron population in the 4p orbital. The interaction of H2O with the zinc clusters were discussed on the basis of the theoretical results.  相似文献

A new topological method is presented to generate the isomer structures of compound clusters with well defined covalent bonds. This method, combined with density functional theory, has been used to perform global optimization of (TiO(2))(n) (n = 1-6) clusters. Our comprehensive search not only reproduces all of the known lowest-energy structures reported in previous works but also reveals some new low-energy structures. Some energetically unfavorable motifs that induce energy penalties are obtained and discussed. Based on the ground state structures of the anionic (TiO(2))(n). clusters, the electron affinities and photoelectron spectra are simulated and compared with available experimental data.  相似文献

The electronic structures of CuBO(2)(-), Cu(BO(2))(2)(-), Cu(2)(BO(2))(-), and Cu(2)(BO(2))(2)(-) clusters were investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy. The measured vertical and adiabatic detachment energies of these clusters revealed unusual properties of Cu(BO(2))(2) cluster. With an electron affinity of 5.07 eV which is larger than that of its BO(2) superhalogen (4.46 eV) building-block, Cu(BO(2))(2) can be classified as a hyperhalogen. Density functional theory based calculations were carried out to identify the ground state geometries and study the electronic structures of these clusters. Cu(BO(2)) and Cu(BO(2))(2) clusters were found to form chainlike structures in both neutral and anionic forms. Cu(2)(BO(2)) and Cu(2)(BO(2))(2) clusters, on the other hand, preferred a chainlike structure in the anionic form but a closed ringlike structure in the neutral form. Equally important, substantial differences between adiabatic detachment energies and electron affinities were found, demonstrating that correct interpretation of the experimental photoelectron spectroscopy data requires theoretical support not only in determining the ground state geometry of neutral and anionic clusters, but also in identifying their low lying isomers.  相似文献

The prominent (SiO(2))(8)O(2)H(3) (-) mass peak resulting from the laser ablation of hydroxylated silica, attributed to magic cluster formation, is investigated employing global optimization with a dedicated interatomic potential and density functional calculations. The low-energy spectra of cluster isomers are calculated for the closed shell clusters: (SiO(2))(8)OH(-) and (SiO(2))(8)O(2)H(3) (-) giving the likely global minima in each case. Based upon our calculated cluster structures and energetics, and further on the known experimental details, it is proposed that the abundant formation of (SiO(2))(8)O(2)H(3) (-) clusters is largely dependent on the high stability of the (SiO(2))(8)OH(-) ground state cluster. Both the (SiO(2))(8)O(2)H(3) (-) and (SiO(2))(8)OH(-) ground state clusters are found to exhibit cagelike structures with the latter containing a particularly unusual tetrahedrally four-coordinated oxygen center not observed before in either bulk silica or silica clusters. The bare ground state (SiO(2))(8)O(2-) cluster ion core is also found to have four tetrahedrally symmetric Si==O terminations making it a possible candidate, when combined with suitable cations, for extended cluster-based structures/materials.  相似文献

The (TiO2)n clusters and their anions for n = 1-4 have been studied with coupled cluster theory [CCSD(T)] and density functional theory (DFT). For n > 1, numerous conformations are located for both the neutral and anionic clusters, and their relative energies are calculated at both the DFT and CCSD(T) levels. The CCSD(T) energies are extrapolated to the complete basis set limit for the monomer and dimer and calculated up to the triple-zeta level for the trimer and tetramer. The adiabatic and vertical electron detachment energies of the anionic clusters to the ground and first excited states of the neutral clusters are calculated at both levels and compared with the experimental results. The comparison allows for the definitive assignment of the ground-state structures of the anionic clusters. Anions of the dimer and tetramer are found to have very closely lying conformations within 2 kcal/mol at the CCSD(T) level, whereas that of the trimer does not. In addition, accurate clustering energies and heats of formation are calculated for the neutral clusters and compared with the available experimental data. Estimates of the titanium-oxygen bond energies show that they are stronger than the group VIB transition metal-oxygen bonds except for tungsten. The atomization energies of these clusters display much stronger basis set dependence than the clustering energies. This allows the calculation of more accurate heats of formation for larger clusters on the basis of calculated clustering energies.  相似文献

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of protonated methanol-water mixed clusters, H (+)(MeOH) 1(H 2O) n ( n = 1-8), were extensively carried out to analyze the hydrogen bond structures of the clusters. Various structural isomers were energy optimized, and their relative energies with zero point energy corrections and temperature dependence of the free energies were examined. Coexistence of different morphological isomers was suggested. Infrared spectra were simulated on the basis of the optimized structures. The infrared spectra were also experimentally measured for n = 3-9 in the OH stretching vibrational region. The observed broad bands in the hydrogen-bonded OH stretch region were assigned in comparison with the simulations. From the DFT calculations, the preferential proton location was also investigated. Clear correlations between the excess proton location and the cluster morphology were found.  相似文献

We report a systematic and comprehensive investigation of the electronic structures and chemical bonding in a series of ditungsten oxide clusters, W2O(n)- and W2O(n) (n = 1-6), using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Well-resolved photoelectron spectra were obtained at several photon energies (2.331, 3.496, 4.661, 6.424, and 7.866 eV), and W 5d-based spectral features were clearly observed and distinguished from O 2p-based features. More complicated spectral features were observed for the oxygen-deficient clusters because of the W 5d electrons. With increasing oxygen content in W2O(n)-, the photoelectron spectra were observed to shift gradually to higher binding energies, accompanied by a decreasing number of W 5d-derived features. A behavior of sequential oxidation as a result of charge transfers from W to O was clearly observed. A large energy gap (2.8 eV) was observed in the spectrum of W2O6-, indicating the high electronic stability of the stoichiometric W2O6 molecule. Extensive DFT calculations were carried out to search for the most stable structures of both the anion and neutral clusters. Time-dependent DFT method was used to compute the vertical detachment energies and compare to the experimental data. Molecular orbitals were used to analyze the chemical bonding in the ditungsten oxide clusters and to elucidate their electronic and structural evolution.  相似文献

The size-selective Zr(2)Si(n) (n = 16-24) caged clusters have been investigated by density functional approach in detail. Their geometries, relative stabilities, electronic properties and ionization potentials have been discussed. The dominant structures of bimetallic Zr(2) doped silicon caged clusters gradually transform to Zr(2) totally encapsulated structures with increase of the clustered size from 16 to 24, which is good agreement with the recent experimental result (J. Phys. Chem. A. 2007, 111, 42). Two novel isomers, i.e., naphthalene-like and dodecahedral Zr(2)Si(20) clusters, are found as low-lying conformers. Furthermore, the novel quasi-1D naphthalene-like Zr(n)Si(m) nanotubes are first reported. The second-order energy differences reveal that magic numbers of the different sized neutral Zr(2)Si(n) clusters appear at n = 18, 20 and 22, which are attributed to the fullerene-like, dodecahedral and polyhedral structures, respectively. The HOMO-LUMO gaps (>1 eV) of all the size-selective Zr(2)Si(n) clusters suggest that encapsulation of the bimetallic zirconium atoms is favorable for increasing the stabilities of silicon cages.  相似文献

Theoretical study on the structures of neutral and singly charged Si(n)Li(p)((+)) (n=1-6, p=1-2) clusters have been carried out in the framework of the density functional theory (DFT) with the B3LYP functional. The structures of the neutral Si(n)Li(p) and cationic Si(n)Li(p)(+) clusters are found to keep the frame of the corresponding Si(n), Li species being adsorbed at the surface. The localization of the lithium cation is not the same one as that of the neutral atom. The Li(+) ion is preferentially located on a Si atom, while the Li atom is preferentially attached at a bridge site. A clear parallelism between the structures of Si(n)Na(p) and those of Si(n)Li(p) appears. The population analysis show that the electronic structure of Si(n)Li(p) can be described as Si(n)(p)(-)+pLi(+) for the small sizes considered. Vertical and adiabatic ionization potentials, adsorption energies, as well as electric dipole moments and static dipolar polarizabilities, are calculated for each considered isomer of neutral species.  相似文献

The chemical bond formation in oxygen-rich Si(n)O(m) clusters was investigated by sampling the potential energy surface of the model systems SiO + SiO(2) → Si(2)O(3) and (SiO)(2) + SiO(2) → Si(3)O(4) along a two-dimensional reaction coordinate, by density functional theory calculations. Evidence for crossing between the weakly bound neutral-neutral (SiO)(n) + SiO(2) and the highly attractive ion-pair (SiO)(n)(+) + SiO(2)(-) surfaces was found. Analysis of frontier molecular orbitals and charge distribution showed that surface crossing involves transfer of valence electron charge from (SiO)(2) to SiO(2). The sum of the natural atomic charges over the (SiO)(n) and (SiO(2)) groups of the Si(n)O(m) cluster products, gave a net positive charge on the (SiO)(n) "core" and a net negative charge on the (SiO(2)) groups. This is interpreted as the "ion-pair memory" left on the Si(n)O(m) products by the charge-transfer mechanism and may provide a way to assess the role of charge-transfer processes in the assembly of larger Si(n)O(m) neutral clusters.  相似文献

The molecular structures, electron affinities, and dissociation energies of the Si(n)H/Si(n)H- (n = 4-10) species have been examined via five hybrid and pure density functional theory (DFT) methods. The basis set used in this work is of double-zeta plus polarization quality with additional diffuse s- and p-type functions, denoted DZP++. The geometries are fully optimized with each DFT method independently. The three different types of neutral-anion energy separations presented in this work are the adiabatic electron affinity (EA(ad)), the vertical electron affinity (EA(vert)), and the vertical detachment energy (VDE). The first Si-H dissociation energies, D(e)(Si(n)H --> Si(n) + H) for neutral Si(n)H and D(e)(Si(n)H- --> Si(n)- + H) for anionic Si(n)H- species, have also been reported. The structures of the ground states of these clusters are traditional H-Si single-bond forms. The ground-state geometries of Si5H, Si6H, Si8H, and Si9H predicted by the DFT methods are different from previous calculations, such as those obtained by Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics and nonorthogonal tight-binding molecular dynamics schemes. The most reliable EA(ad) values obtained at the B3LYP level of theory are 2.59 (Si4H), 2.84 (Si5H), 2.86 (Si6H), 3.19 (Si7H), 3.14 (Si8H), 3.36 (Si9H), and 3.56 (Si10H) eV. The first dissociation energies (Si(n)H --> Si(n) + H) predicted by all of these methods are 2.20-2.29 (Si4H), 2.30-2.83 (Si5H), 2.12-2.41 (Si6H), 1.75-2.03 (Si7H), 2.41-2.72 (Si8H), 1.86-2.11 (Si9H), and 1.92-2.27 (Si10H) eV. For the negatively charged ion clusters (Si(n)H- --> Si(n)- + H), the dissociation energies predicted are 2.56-2.69 (Si4H-), 2.80-3.01 (Si5H-), 2.86-3.06 (Si6H-), 2.80-3.03 (Si7H-), 2.69-2.92 (Si8H-), 2.92-3.18 (Si9H-), and 2.89-3.25 (Si10H-) eV.  相似文献

TiO2 is a wide-band-gap semiconductor, and it is an important material for photocatalysis. Here we report an experimental investigation of the electronic structure of (TiO2)n clusters and how their band gap evolves as a function of size using anion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). PES spectra of (TiO2)n- clusters for n = 1-10 have been obtained at 193 nm (6.424 eV) and 157 nm (7.866 eV). The high photon energy at 157 nm allows the band gap of the TiO2 clusters to be clearly revealed up to n = 10. The band gap is observed to be strongly size-dependent for n < 7, but it rapidly approaches the bulk limit at n = 7 and remains constant up to n = 10. All PES features are observed to be very broad, suggesting large geometry changes between the anions and the neutral clusters due to the localized nature of the extra electron in the anions. The measured electron affinities and the energy gaps are compared with available theoretical calculations. The extra electron in the (TiO2)n- clusters for n > 1 appears to be localized in a tricoordinated Ti atom, creating a single Ti3+ site and making these clusters ideal molecular models for mechanistic understanding of TiO2 surface defects and photocatalytic properties.  相似文献

The infrared photodissociation spectra of [(CO(2))(n)(H(2)O)(m)](-) (n=1-4, m=1, 2) are measured in the 3000-3800 cm(-1) range. The [(CO(2))(n)(H(2)O)(1)](-) spectra are characterized by a sharp band around 3570 cm(-1) except for n=1; [(CO(2))(1)(H(2)O)(1)](-) does not photodissociate in the spectral range studied. The [(CO(2))(n)(H(2)O)(2)](-) (n=1, 2) species have similar spectral features with a broadband at approximately 3340 cm(-1). A drastic change in the spectral features is observed for [(CO(2))(3)(H(2)O)(2)](-), where sharp bands appear at 3224, 3321, 3364, 3438, and 3572 cm(-1). Ab initio calculations are performed at the MP2/6-311++G(**) level to provide structural information such as optimized structures, stabilization energies, and vibrational frequencies of the [(CO(2))(n)(H(2)O)(m)](-) species. Comparison between the experimental and theoretical results reveals rather size- and composition-specific hydration manner in [(CO(2))(n)(H(2)O)(m)](-): (1) the incorporated H(2)O is bonded to either CO(2) (-) or C(2)O(4) (-) through two equivalent OH...O hydrogen bonds to form a ring structure in [(CO(2))(n)(H(2)O)(1)](-); (2) two H(2)O molecules are independently bound to the O atoms of CO(2) (-) in [(CO(2))(n)(H(2)O)(2)](-) (n=1, 2); (3) a cyclic structure composed of CO(2) (-) and two H(2)O molecules is formed in [(CO(2))(3)(H(2)O)(2)](-).  相似文献

The structures and energies of Be(n)Si(n) and Be(2n)Si(n) (n = 1-4) clusters have been examined in ab initio theoretical electronic structure calculations. Cluster geometries have been established in B3LYP/6-31G(2df) calculations and accurate relative energies determined by the G3XMP2 method. The two atoms readily bond to each other and to other atoms of their own kind. The result is a great variety of low-energy clusters in a variety of structural types.  相似文献
