As a part of efforts to prepare new “metallachalcogenolate” precursors and develop their chemistry for the formation of ternary mixed‐metal chalcogenide nanoclusters, two sets of thermally stable, N‐heterocyclic carbene metal–chalcogenolate complexes of the general formula [(IPr)Ag?ESiMe3] (IPr=1,3‐bis(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene; E=S, 1 ; Se, 2 ) and [(iPr2‐bimy)Cu?ESiMe3]2 (iPr2‐bimy=1,3‐diisopropylbenzimidazolin‐2‐ylidene; E=S, 4 ; Se, 5 ) are reported. These are prepared from the reaction between the corresponding carbene metal acetate, [(IPr)AgOAc] and [(iPr‐bimy)CuOAc] respectively, and E(SiMe3)2 at low temperature. The reaction of [(IPr)Ag?ESiMe3] 1 with mercury(II) acetate affords the heterometallic complex [{(IPr)AgS}2Hg] 3 containing two (IPr)Ag?S? fragments bonded to a central HgII, representing a mixed mercury–silver sulfide complex. The reaction of [(iPr2‐bimy)Cu‐SSiMe3]2, which contains a smaller N‐heterocyclic‐carbene, with mercuric(II) acetate affords the high nuclearity cluster, [(iPr2‐bimy)6Cu10S8Hg3] 6 . The new N‐heterocyclic carbene metal–chalcogenolate complexes 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 and the ternary mixed‐metal chalcogenolate complex 3 and cluster 6 have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy (1H and 13C), elemental analysis and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction.

Mono‐ and Dinuclear Rhodium Complexes with Arsino(phosphino)methanes in Different Coordination Modes The cyclooctadiene complex [Rh(η4‐C8H12)(κ2tBu2AsCH2PiPr2)](PF6) ( 1a ) reacts with CO and CNtBu to give the substitution products [Rh(L)22tBu2AsCH2PiPr2)](PF6) ( 2 , 3 ). From 1a and Na(acac) in the presence of CO the neutral compound [Rh(κ2‐acac)(CO)(κ‐PtBu2AsCH2PiPr2)] ( 4 ) is formed. The reactions of 1a , the corresponding B(ArF)4‐salt 1b and [Rh(η4‐C8H12)(κ2iPr2AsCH2PiPr2)](PF6) ( 5 ) with acetonitrile under a H2 atmosphere affords the complexes [Rh(CH3CN)22‐R2AsCH2PiPr2)]X ( 6a , 6b , 7 ), of which 6a (R = tBu; X = PF6) gives upon treatment with Na(acac‐f6) the bis(chelate) compound [Rh(κ2‐acac‐f6)(κ2tBu2AsCH2PiPr2)] ( 8 ). From 8 and CH3I a mixture of two stereoisomers of composition [Rh(CH3)I(κ2‐acac‐f6)(κ2tBu2AsCH2PiPr2)] ( 9/10 ) is generated by oxidative addition, and the molecular structure of the racemate 9 has been determined. The reactions of 1a and 5 with CO in the presence of NaCl leads to the formation of the “A‐frame” complexes [Rh2(CO)2(μ‐Cl)(μ‐R2AsCH2PiPr2)2](PF6) ( 11 , 12 ), which have been characterized crystallographically. From 11 and 12 the dinuclear substitution products [Rh2(CO)2(μ‐X)(μ‐R2AsCH2PiPr2)2](PF6) ( 13 ‐ 16 ) are obtained by replacing the bridging chloride for bromide, hydride or hydroxide, respectively. While 12 (R = iPr) reacts with NaI to give the related “A‐frame” complex 18 , treatment of 11 (R = tBu) with NaI yields the mononuclear chelate compound [RhI(CO)(κ2tBu2AsCH2PiPr2)] ( 20 ). The reaction of 20 with CH3I affords the acetyl complex [RhI2{C(O)CH3}(κ2tBu2AsCH2PiPr2)] ( 21 ) with five‐coordinate rhodium atom.

Surface organic ligands play a critical role in stabilizing atomically precise metal nanoclusters in solutions. However, it is still challenging to prepare highly robust ligated metal nanoclusters that are surface‐active for liquid‐phase catalysis without any pre‐treatment. Now, an N‐heterocyclic carbene‐stabilized Au25 nanocluster with high thermal and air stabilities is presented as a homogenous catalyst for cycloisomerization of alkynyl amines to indoles. The nanocluster, characterized as [Au25(iPr2‐bimy)10Br7]2+ (iPr2‐bimy=1,3‐diisopropylbenzimidazolin‐2‐ylidene) ( 1 ), was synthesized by direct reduction of AuSMe2Cl and iPr2‐bimyAuBr with NaBH4 in one pot. X‐ray crystallization analysis revealed that the cluster comprises two centered Au13 icosahedra sharing a vertex. Cluster 1 is highly stable and can survive in solution at 80 °C for 12 h, which is superior to Au25 nanoclusters passivated with phosphines or thiols. DFT computations reveal the origins of both electronic and thermal stability of 1 and point to the probable catalytic sites. This work provides new insights into the bonding capability of N‐heterocyclic carbene to Au in a cluster, and offers an opportunity to probe the catalytic mechanism at the atomic level.

The complex trans-[Rh(CO)(NH3)(PiPr3)2]PF6 (2) was prepared from [(η3-C3H5)Rh(PiPr3)2] (1), NH4PF6 and CO or from 1 and NH4PF6 in presence of an excess of methanol. With an excess of CO, the dicarbonyl and tricarbonyl compounds trans-[Rh(CO)2(PiPr3)2]PF6 (3) and [Rh(CO)3(PiPr3)2]PF6 (4) were obtained. Displacement of one CO ligand in 3 by pyridine and acetone led to the formation of trans-[Rh(CO)(py)PiPr3)2]PF6 (5a) and trans-[Rh(CO) (O=CMe2(PiPr3)2]PF6 (6), respectively. Treatment of 1 with [pyH]BF4 and pyridine gave trans-[Rh(py)2(PiPr3)2]BF4 (7); in presence of H2 the dihydrido complex [RhH2(py)2(PiPr3)2]BF4 (8) was formed. The reaction of 1 with NH4PF6 and ethylene produced trans [Rh(C2H4(NH3(PiPr3)2]PF6(9) whereas with methylvinylketone and acetophenone the octahedral hydridorhodium(III) complexes [RhH(η2-CH=CHC(=O)CH3 (NH3(PiPr3)2]PF6(11) and [RhH(η2-C6H4C(=O)CH3(NH3(Pipr3)2]PF6 (13) were obtained. The synthesis of the cationic vinylidenerhodium(I) compounds trans-[Rh(=C=CHR)(py)(PiPr3)2]BF4 (14–16) and trans-[Rh(=C=CHR)(NH3)(PiPr3) 2]PF6 (17–19) was achieved either on treatment of 1 with [pyH]BF4 or NH4PF6 in presence of 1-alkynes or by ethylene displacement from 9 by HCCR. With tert-butylacetylene as substrate, the alkinyl(hydrido)rhodium(III) complex [RhH(CCtBu)(NH3)(O=CMe2)(PiPr3) 2]PF6 (20) was isolated which in CH2Cl2 solution smoothly reacted to give 19 (R =tBu). The cationic but-2-yne compound trans-[Rh(MeCCMe)(NH3)(Pi Pr3)2]PF6 (21) was prepared from 1, NH4PF6 and C2Me2. The molecular structures of 3 and 14 were determined by X-ray crystallography; in both cases the square-planar coordination around the metal and the trans disposition of the phosphine ligands was confirmed.

Abstract

The reaction of the NHC iPr2Im [NHC=N‐heterocyclic carbene, iPr2Im = 1, 3‐bis(isopropyl)imidazolin‐2‐ylidene] with freshly prepared NiBr2 in thf or dme results in the formation of the air stable nickel(II) complex trans‐[Ni(iPr2Im)2Br2] ( 2 ). Complex 2 was structurally characterized. Thermal analysis (DTA/TG) reveals a very high decomposition temperature of 298 °C. Reduction of 2 with sodium or C8K in the presence of the olefins COD (cyclooctadiene) or COE (cyclooctene) affords the highly reactive compounds [Ni2(iPr2Im)4(COD)] ( 1 ) and [Ni(iPr2Im)2(COE)] ( 4 ). Alkylation of 2 with organolithiums leads to the formation of trans‐[Ni(iPr2Im)2(R)2] [R = Me ( 5 ), CH2SiMe3 ( 6 )], whereas the reaction of 2 with LiCp* [Cp* = (η5‐C5(CH3)5)] at 80 °C causes the loss of one NHC ligand and affords [(η5‐C5(CH3)5)Ni(iPr2Im)Br] ( 7 ).

Synthesis, Structure, and Photochemical Behavior of Olefine Iridium(I) Complexes with Acetylacetonato Ligands The bis(ethene) complex [Ir(κ2‐acac)(C2H4)2] ( 1 ) reacts with tertiary phosphanes to give the monosubstitution products [Ir(κ2‐acac)(C2H4)(PR3)] ( 2 – 5 ). While 2 (R = iPr) is inert toward PiPr3, the reaction of 2 with diphenylacetylene affords the π‐alkyne complex [Ir(κ2‐acac)(C2Ph2)(PiPr3)] ( 6 ). Treatment of [IrCl(C2H4)4] with C‐functionalized acetylacetonates yields the compounds [Ir(κ2‐acacR1,2)(C2H4)2] ( 8 , 9 ), which react with PiPr3 to give [Ir(κ2‐acacR1,2)(C2H4)(PiPr3)] ( 10 , 11 ) by displacement of one ethene ligand. UV irradiation of 5 (PR3 = iPr2PCH2CO2Me) and 11 (R2 = (CH2)3CO2Me) leads, after addition of PiPr3, to the formation of the hydrido(vinyl)iridium(III) complexes 7 and 12 . The reaction of 2 with the ethene derivatives CH2=CHR (R = CN, OC(O)Me, C(O)Me) affords the compounds [Ir(κ2‐acac)(CH2=CHR)(PiPr3)] ( 13 – 15 ), which on photolysis in the presence of PiPr3 also undergo an intramolecular C–H activation. In contrast, the analogous complexes [Ir(κ2‐acac)(olefin)(PiPr3)] (olefin = (E)‐C2H2(CO2Me)2 16 , (Z)‐C2H2(CO2Me)2 17 ) are photochemically inert.

The syntheses, structures, and chemotherapeutic activities of Ag(I)‐, Au(I)‐, and Ru(II)‐complexes ligated to a novel N‐heterocyclic carbene ligand, 2‐(4‐nitrophenyl)imidazo[1,5‐a]pyridin‐2‐ylidene ( 1 ), are described. The corresponding complexes, [Ag( 1 )2][PF6], [Au( 1 )2][PF6] ( 3 ), and [Ru( 1 )(p‐cymene)Cl][PF6] ( 4 ), were prepared using convenient transmetallation chemistry and characterized using a range of spectroscopic and analytical techniques. X‐ray crystallography revealed that complexes 2 and 3 adopted linear structures whereas 4 exhibited a prototypical “piano‐stool”‐like geometry; the structural assignments were further supported by DFT calculations. A series of in vitro studies revealed that while the aforementioned Ag(I), Au(I) and Ru(II) complexes exhibited significant cytotoxicities against the human colon adenocarcinoma (HCT 116), lung cancer (A549), and breast cancer (MCF7) cell lines, the Ru derivative was most prominent.

Synthesis and Dynamic Behaviour of [Rh2(μ-H)3H2(PiPr3)4]+. Contributions to the Reactivity of the Tetrahydridodirhodium Complex [Rh2H4(PiPr3)4] An improved synthesis of [Rh2H4(PiPr3)4] ( 2 ) from [Rh(η3-C3H5)(PiPr3)2] ( 1 ) or [Rh(η3-CH2C6H5)(PiPr3)2] ( 3 ) and H2 is described. Compound 2 reacts with CO or CH3OH to give trans-[RhH(CO)(PiPr3)2] ( 4 ) and with ethene/acetone to yield a mixture of 4 and trans-[RhCH3(CO)(PiPr3)2] ( 5 ). The carbonyl(methyl) complex 5 has also been prepared from trans-[RhCl(CO)(PiPr3)2] ( 6 ) and CH3MgI. Whereas the reaction of 2 with two parts of CF3CO2H leads to [RhH22-O2CCF3) · (PiPr3)2] ( 8 ), treatment of 2 with one equivalent of CF3CO2H in presence of NH4PF6 gives the dinuclear compound [Rh2H5(PiPr3)4]PF6 ( 9a ). The reactions of 2 with HBF4 and [NO]BF4 afford the complexes [Rh2H5(PiPr3)4]BF4 ( 9b ) and trans-[RhF(NO)(PiPr3)2]BF4 ( 11 ), respectively. In solution, the cation [Rh2(μ-H)3H2(PiPr3)4]+ of the compounds 9a and 9b undergoes an intramolecular rearrangement in which the bridging hydrido and the phosphane ligands are involved.

The structures of these compounds were determined by single crystal X‐ray structural analyses.

Treatment of the (isocyanide)gold(I) species LAuCl (L=tBuNC, 2,6‐Me2C6H3NC) with 4‐mercaptobenzoic acid in the presence of NaOMe yields the complexes [Au(4‐SC6H4CO2H)L] in good yield. Reaction of LAuCl with 2‐HSQn (Qn=quinoline) and 2‐HSPy (Py=pyridine) under the same conditions provides the thiolato compounds [Au(2‐SQn)L] and [Au(2‐SPy)L], respectively. A structural investigation of the pyridylthiolato compound revealed chains of molecules with alternating medium and long Au−Au interactions. Treatment of this compound with HBF4 results in the cationic species [Au(2‐HSPy)(2,6‐Me2C6H3NC)]+ as the BF4 salt. The same product is obtained on reaction of [AuCl(2,6‐Me2C6H3NC)] with AgOTf followed by HSPy. Treatment of the gold(I) halide compounds LAuCl (L=tBuNC, 2,6‐Me2C6H3NC) with potassium 1,3,4‐thiadiazole‐2,5‐dithiolate (KSSSK) leads to the isolation of dinuclear thiolatogold complexes [(AuL)2(SSS)]. These products go on to form insoluble polymers through loss of isocyanide on standing in solution. A single crystal of [{Au(tBuNC)}2(SSS)] was obtained and the subsequent structural analysis revealed one of the most complicated networks known based solely on aurophilic interactions. A good comparison to the ‘soft' S‐donation of the thiolato ligands was provided by the synthesis of a number of nitratogold(I)complexes with the anion bound through the ‘hard' O‐donor. Reaction of iPrNC and CyNC with Au(tht)Cl provided the complexes [AuCl(iPrNC)] and [AuCl(CyNC)], respectively. These compounds were found to yield the respective nitrato species [Au(NO3)iPrNC)] and [(Au(NO3)(CyNC)] on treatment with AgNO3. The nitrato complexes yielded single crystals enabling a structural investigation to be carried out. While [Au(NO3)(CyNC)] has a more conventional structure with dimers aligned into strings with alternating short and long aurophilic bonding, [Au(NO3)(iPrNC)] has a unique structure based on strings of alternating, corner‐sharing Au6 and Au8 units with short Au−Au contacts in edge‐sharing Au3 triangles.

The Tris(triisopropylsilyl)pnikogenes: Synthesis and Characterisation of [E(Si i Pr3)3] (E = P, As, Sb) The compounds [E(SiiPr3)3] (E = P, As, Sb) ( 1 – 3 ) were prepared in high yields by the reaction of (Na/K)3E with iPr3SiCl in DME. They were characterised by 1H‐, 13C‐, 29Si‐ and 31P‐NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X‐ray diffraction. Compound 1 , recently obtained in a different way, shows an unusual trigonal planar coordination of the central phosphorus atom. However, 2 and 3 , featuring increasing covalence radii of the central atoms, show an increasingly pyramidal structure. 1 – 3 crystallise isotyp in the cubic spacegroup Pa 3, the lattice constants are: 1 : a = 1860.1(2) pm, 2 : a = 1873.6(2) pm, 3 : a = 1897.1(2) pm.

Three new complexes with phosphanylphosphido ligands, [Cu4{μ2‐P(SiMe3)‐PtBu}4] ( 1 ), [Ag4{μ2‐P(SiMe3)‐PtBu2}4] ( 2 ) and [Cu{η1‐P(SiMe3)‐PiPr2}2][Li(Diglyme)2]+ ( 3 ) were synthesized and structurally characterized by X‐ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Complexes 1 and 2 were obtained in the reactions of lithium derivative of diphosphane tBu2P‐P(SiMe3)Li · 2.7THF with CuCl and [iBu3PAgCl]4, respectively. The X‐ray diffraction analysis revealed that the complexes 1 and 2 present macrocyclic, tetrameric form with Cu4P4 and Ag4P4 core. Complex 3 was prepared in the reaction of CuCl with a different derivative of lithiated diphosphane iPr2P‐P(SiMe3)Li · 2(Diglyme). Surprisingly, the X‐ray analysis of 3 revealed that in this reaction instead of the tetramer the monomeric form, ionic complex [Cu{η1‐P(SiMe3)‐PiPr2}2][Li(Diglyme)2]+ was formed.

A variety of very bulky amido magnesium iodide complexes, LMgI(solvent)0/1 and [LMg(μ‐I)(solvent)0/1]2 (L=‐N(Ar)(SiR3); Ar=C6H2{C(H)Ph2}2R′‐2,6,4; R=Me, Pri, Ph, or OBut; R′=Pri or Me) have been prepared by three synthetic routes. Structurally characterized examples of these materials include the first unsolvated amido magnesium halide complexes, such as [LMg(μ‐I)]2 (R=Me, R′=Pri). Reductions of several such complexes with KC8 in the absence of coordinating solvents have afforded the first two‐coordinate magnesium(I) dimers, LMg?MgL (R=Me, Pri or Ph; R′=Pri, or Me), in low to good yields. Reductions of two of the precursor complexes in the presence of THF have given the related THF adduct complexes, L(THF)Mg?Mg(THF)L (R=Me; R′=Pri) and LMg?Mg(THF)L (R=Pri; R′=Me) in trace yields. The X‐ray crystal structures of all magnesium(I) complexes were obtained. DFT calculations on the unsolvated examples reveal their Mg?Mg bonds to be covalent and of high s‐character, while Ph???Mg bonding interactions in the compounds were found to be weak at best.

The Dihydridoiridium(III) Complex [IrH2Cl(P i Pr3)2] as a Molecular Building Block for Unsymmetrical Binuclear Rhodium–Iridium and Iridium–Iridium Compounds The title compound [IrH2Cl(PiPr3)2] ( 3 ) reacts with the chloro‐bridged dimers [RhCl(PiPr3)2]2 ( 1 ) and [IrCl(C8H14)(PiPr3)]2 ( 5 ) by cleavage of the Cl‐bridges to give the unsymmetrical binuclear complexes 4 and 6 with Rh(μ‐Cl)2Ir and Ir(μ‐Cl)2Ir as the central building block. The reactions of 3 with the bis(cyclooctene) and (1,5‐cyclooctadiene) compounds [MCl(C8H14)2]2 ( 7 , 8 ) and [MCl(η4‐C8H12)]2 ( 9 , 10 ) (M = Rh, Ir) occur analogously and afford the rhodium(I)‐iridium(III) and iridium(I)‐iridium(III) complexes 11 – 14 in 70–80% yield. Treatment of [(η4‐C8H12)M(μ‐Cl)2IrH2(PiPr3)2] ( 13 , 14 ) with phenylacetylene leads to the formation of the substitution products [(η4‐C8H12)M(μ‐Cl)2IrH(C≡CPh)(PiPr3)2] ( 15 , 16 ) without changing the central molecular core. Similarly, the compound [(η4‐C8H12)Rh(μ‐Br)2IrH(C≡CPh)(PiPr3)2] ( 18 ) has been prepared; it was characterized by X‐ray crystallography.

The crystal and molecular structure of [Pd(iPr2dtc)2] (dtc = dithiocarbamate) have been determined by X‐ray crystallography. The unit cell of the crystal structure consists of two discrete monomelic molecules of [Pd(iPr2dtc)2]. The Pd(II) ion has an square‐planar geometry. The electronic and IR spectral data are in agreement with the X‐ray structure. The TG data indicate slight degradation of a few percent.

This paper describes the formation of new platinacyclic complexes derived from the phosphine ligands PiPr2Xyl, PMeXyl2, and PMe2Ar (Xyl=2,6‐Me2C6H3 and Ar=2,6‐(2,6‐Me2C6H3)2‐C6H3) as well as reactivity studies of the trans‐[Pt(C^P)2] bis‐metallacyclic complex 1 a derived from PiPr2Xyl. Protonation of compound 1 a with [H(OEt2)2][BArF] (BArF=B[3,5‐(CF3)2C6H3]4) forms a cationic δ‐agostic structure 4 a , whereas α‐hydride abstraction employing [Ph3C][PF6] produces a cationic platinum carbene trans‐[Pt{PiPr2(2,6‐CH(Me)C6H3}{PiPr2(2,6‐CH2(Me)C6H3}][PF6] ( 8 ). Compounds 4 a and 8 react with H2 to yield the same 1:3 equilibrium mixture of 4 a and trans‐[PtH(PiPr2Xyl)2][BArF] ( 6 ), in which one of the phosphine ligands participates in a δ‐agostic interaction. DFT calculations reveal that H2 activation by 8 occurs at the highly electrophilic alkylidene terminus with no participation of the metal. The two compounds 4 a and 8 experience C–C coupling reactions of a different nature. Thus, 4 a gives rise to complex trans‐[PtH{(E)‐1,2‐bis(2‐(PiPr2)‐3‐MeC6H3)CH?CH}] ( 7 ) that contains a tridentate diphosphine–alkene ligand, through agostic C?H oxidative cleavage and C–C reductive coupling steps, whereas the C–C coupling reaction in 8 involves classical migratory insertion of its [Pt?CH] and [Pt?CH2] bonds promoted by platinum coordination of CO or CNXyl. The mechanisms of the C?C bond‐forming reactions have also been investigated by computational methods.

Novel silylation reactions at [Ge9] Zintl clusters starting from the chlorosilanes SiR3Cl (R = iBu, iPr, Et) and the Zintl phase K4Ge9 are reported. The formation of the tris‐silylated anions [Ge9(SiR3)3] [R = iBu ( 1a ), iPr ( 1b ), Et ( 1c )] by heterogeneous reactions in acetonitrile was monitored by ESI‐MS measurements. For R = iBu 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR experiments confirmed the exclusive formation of 1a . Subsequent reactions of 1a with CuNHCDippCl and Au(PPh3)Cl result in formation of the neutral metal complex (CuNHCDipp)[Ge9{Si(iBu)3}3]·0.5 tol ( 2 ·0.5 tol) and the metal bridged dimeric unit {Au[Ge9{Si(iBu)3}3]2} ( 3a ), isolated as a (K‐18c6)+ salt in (K‐18c6)Au[Ge9{Si(iBu)3}3]2·tol ( 3 ·tol), respectively. Finally, from a toluene/hexane solution of 1a in presence of 18‐crown‐6, crystals of the compound (K‐18c6)2[Ge9{Si(iBu)3}2]·tol ( 4 ·tol), containing the bis‐silylated cluster anion [Ge9(Si(iBu)3)2]2– ( 4a ), were obtained. The compounds 2 ·0.5 tol, 3 ·tol and 4 ·tol were characterized by single‐crystal structure determination.
