In this paper, we characterize compact groupsG as well as connected central topological groupsG for which the centreZ(L 1(G)) admits a finite universal Korovkin set. Also we prove that ifG is a non-connected central topological group which has a compact open normal subgroupK such thatG=KZ, thenZ(L 1(G)) admits a finite universal Korovkin set if is a finite-dimensional separable metric space or equivalentlyG is separable metrizable andG/K has finite torsion-free rank.  相似文献

We prove that there exists a finite universal Korovkin set w.r.t positive operators for the centre of a Segal algebra on a compact groupG if and only ifG is metrizable. As a consequence it follows that a Segal algebra on a compact abelian group admits a finite universal Korovkin set w.r.t. positive operators iff the group is metrizable.  相似文献

Let G be a compact connected semisimple Lie group. We extend to all irreducible finite-dimensional representations of G a result of Heckman which provides a relation between the generalized Littlewood–Richardson rule and the sum of G-coadjoint orbits. As an application of our result, we describe the eigenvalues of a sum of two real skew-symmetric matrices.  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact commutative group and let g and h be positive definite functions on G, which are not identically zero. We show that continuity of gh? implies the existence of a character γ of Gd (the discrete version of G) such that γg and γh are continuous. As corollary we get a special case of a result of K. de Leeuw and I. Glicksberg concerning almost continuous group representations. In the second part of the paper we prove decomposition theorems for positive definite functions defined on a neighbourhood of the zero.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce some new sequences of positive linear operators, acting on a sufficiently large space of continuous functions on the real line, which generalize Gauss–Weierstrass operators. We study their approximation properties and prove an asymptotic formula that relates such operators to a second order elliptic differential operator of the form Lu?αu′′+βu+γu.Shape-preserving and regularity properties are also investigated.  相似文献

This paper deals with the automatic continuity theory for the convolution algebra of all Bochner integrable functions from a locally compact abelian group G into an arbitrary unital complex Banach algebra A. For non-compact G, it is shown that all epimorphisms and all derivations on this vector-valued group algebra are necessarily continuous while for compact G, such results depend heavily on the automatic continuity properties of the range algebra a. In this article we extend to the setting of band-limited functions on compact groups previous results bounding from below the percentage of energy, contained in the low frequency portion of the spectrum of a positive function defined on a cyclic group. Connections to signal recovery for positive functions, as well as partial spectral analysis, are also discussed.  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact group. For 1 < p < ∞, it is well-known that f * g exists and belongs to Lp(G) for all f, g Lp (G) if and only if G is compact. Here, for 2 < p < ∞, we show that f * g exists for all f, g Lp(G) if and only if G is compact. We also show that this result does not remain true for 1 < p ≤ 2. Received: 23 April 2006  相似文献

LetPM p (G) be the space of allp-pseudomeasures on a locally compact groupG. We show the existence of a conditional expectation fromPM p (G) ontoPM p (H) whereH is a closed normal subgroup ofG. As an application we give a new proof of the fact thatH is a set ofp-synthesis inG; we also get an inequality involving the operator norm of bounded measures onG. Moreover, in analogy with a theorem of Reiter, we obtain a result concerning the closed ideals of the Figà-Talamanca Herz algebra ofG.  相似文献

Given a locally compact group G acting on a locally compact space X and a probability measure σ on G, a real Borel function f on X is called σ-harmonic if it satisfies the convolution equation . We give conditions for the absence of nonconstant bounded harmonic functions. We show that, if G is a union of σ-admissible neighbourhoods of the identity, relative to X, then every bounded σ-harmonic function on X is constant. Consequently, for spread out σ, the bounded σ-harmonic functions are constant on each connected component of a [SIN]-group and, if G acts strictly transitively on a splittable metric space X, then the bounded σ-harmonic functions on X are constant which extends Furstenberg’s result for connected semisimple Lie groups. Let G be a connected complex semisimple affine algebraic group, and let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G. Let X be a noncompact oriented surface. The main theorem of Florentino and Lawton (2009) [3] says that the moduli space of flat K-connections on X is a strong deformation retraction of the moduli space of flat G-connections on X. We prove that this statement fails whenever X is compact of genus at least two.  相似文献

The Padua points are a family of points on the square [−1, 1]2 given by explicit formulas that admits unique Lagrange interpolation by bivariate polynomials. Interpolation polynomials and cubature formulas based on the Padua points are studied from an ideal theoretic point of view, which leads to the discovery of a compact formula for the interpolation polynomials. The L p convergence of the interpolation polynomials is also studied. S. De Marchi and M. In the case of a locally compact abelian groupG we give a characterization of bounded continuous functions onG which have a finite number of negative squares. We show that these functions can be regarded in a certain sense as a special case of positive definite functions.  相似文献

We obtain two new criteria of amenability of a closed normal subgroup H in a locally compact group G. The first one is formulated in terms of convergence of convolutions of probability measures on G, and the second one in terms of the Poisson boundaries of random walks on G and on the quotient group G/H. In this paper we construct the fundamental solution to the Schödinger equation on a compact symmetric space with even root multiplicities using shift operators of Heckman and Opdam. Next, we prove that the support of the fundamental solution becomes a lower dimensional subset at a rational time whereas its support and its singular support coincide with the whole symmetric space at an irrational time. Moreover, we also show that generalized Gauss sums appear in the expression of the fundamental solution.  相似文献

In this note, we look at some hypoelliptic operators arising from nilpotent rank 2 Lie algebras. In particular, we concentrate on the diffusion generated by three Brownian motions and their three Lévy areas, which is the simplest extension of the Laplacian on the Heisenberg group H. In order to study contraction properties of the heat kernel, we show that, as in the case of the Heisenberg group, the restriction of the sub-Laplace operator acting on radial functions (which are defined in some precise way in the core of the paper) satisfies a non-negative Ricci curvature condition (more precisely a CD(0,∞) inequality), whereas the operator itself does not satisfy any CD(r,∞) inequality. From this we may deduce some useful, sharp gradient bounds for the associated heat kernel.  相似文献

Let K be a compact hypergroup. We investigate Trig(K), the linear span of coordinate functions of the irreducible representations of K. Contrary to the group case, Trig(K) endowed with the usual multiplication does not bear an algebra structure, but it has a natural normed algebra structure when it inherits the convolution from , the algebra of all bounded Radon measures. We characterize the center of the algebras , L p (K) and Trig(K) respectively, and consequently we obtain, for a certain class of hypergroups, the correspondence between the structure space of the center of L 1(K) and the center of Trig(K). As an application we study the existence of a finite universal Korovkin set w.r.t. positive operators in the center of L 1(K), in particular in L 1(K), whenever K is commutative. Given a compact connected abelian group G, its dual group Γ can be ordered (in a non-canonical way) so that it becomes an ordered group. It is known that, for any such ordering on Γ and p in the range 1<p<∞, the characteristic function χI of an interval I in Γ is a p—multiplier with a uniform bound (independent of I) on the corresponding operator SI on Lp(G). In this note it is shown that, for 1<p,q<∞, there is a constant Cp,q, independent of G and the particular ordering on Γ, such that for all sequences {Ij} of intervals in Γ and all sequences {fj} in Lp(G). Such a result was conjectured by J.L. Rubio de Francia, who noted its validity when The present proof uses a transference argument, an approach which shows that any constant Cp,q for which the inequality holds when G = will serve for every G and every ordering on Γ. An added advantage of this approach is that it adapts to give an extension of the result for functions taking values in a UMD space. The work of the first author was partially supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (U.S.A.). We study strictly positive definite functions on the complex Hilbert sphere. A link between strict positive definiteness and (harmonic) polynomial interpolation on finite‐dimensional spheres is investigated. Sufficient conditions for strict positive definiteness are presented. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
