We characterize the scaling functions of a multiresolution analysis in a general context, where instead of the dyadic dilation one considers the dilation given by a fixed linear map such that and all (complex) eigenvalues of have absolute value greater than In the general case the conditions depend on the map We identify some maps for which the obtained condition is equivalent to the dyadic case, i.e., when is a diagonal matrix with all numbers in the diagonal equal to There are also easy examples of expanding maps for which the obtained condition is not compatible with the dyadic case. The complete characterization of the maps for which the obtained conditions are equivalent is out of the scope of the present note.

A topological space is a -space provided that, for every sequence of continuous functions from to , if the series converges pointwise, then it converges pseudo-normally. We show that every regular Lindelöf -space has the Rothberger property. We also construct, under the continuum hypothesis, a -subset of of cardinality continuum.

We are dealing with Lie groups which are diffeomorphic to , for some . After identifying with , the multiplication on can be seen as a map . We show that if is a polynomial map in one of the two (sets of) variables or , then is solvable. Moreover, if one knows that is polynomial in one of the variables, the group is nilpotent if and only if is polynomial in both its variables.

Let be a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature immersed into the unit Euclidean sphere . In this paper we derive a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the stability operator of in terms of the mean curvature and the length of the total umbilicity tensor of the hypersurface. Moreover, we prove that this bound is achieved only for the so-called -tori in , with . This extends to the case of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces previous results given by Wu (1993) and Perdomo (2002) for minimal hypersurfaces.

For spaces on , and , sharp versions of the classical Marchaud inequality are known. These results are extended here to Orlicz spaces (on , and ) for which is convex for some , , where is the Orlicz function. Sharp converse inequalities for such spaces are deduced.

If is a foliation of an open set by smooth -dimensional surfaces, we define a class of functions , supported in , that are, roughly speaking, smooth along and of bounded variation transverse to . We investigate geometrical conditions on that imply results on pointwise Fourier inversion for these functions. We also note similar results for functions on spheres, on compact 2-dimensional manifolds, and on the 3-dimensional torus. These results are multidimensional analogues of the classical Dirichlet-Jordan test of pointwise convergence of Fourier series in one variable.

The measure is not -finite. We prove three Fubini theorems, namely, the Fubini theorem, the mean Fubini-Jensen theorem, and the pointwise Fubini-Jensen theorem. Finally, as an application of the measure , we construct, via selfadjoint operators on , a ``Schrödinger model' of the canonical commutation relations: , , .

Let be a finite field and a transcendental element over . An imaginary function field is defined to be a function field such that the prime at infinity is inert or totally ramified. For the totally imaginary case, in a recent paper the second author constructed infinitely many function fields of any fixed degree over in which the prime at infinity is totally ramified and with ideal class numbers divisible by any given positive integer greater than 1. In this paper, we complete the imaginary case by proving the corresponding result for function fields in which the prime at infinity is inert. Specifically, we show that for relatively prime integers and , there are infinitely many function fields of fixed degree such that the class group of contains a subgroup isomorphic to and the prime at infinity is inert.

Let be a representation of a finite group over the field . Denote by the algebra of polynomial functions on the vector space . The group acts on and hence also on . The algebra of coinvariants is , where is the ideal generated by all the homogeneous -invariant forms of strictly positive degree. If the field has characteristic zero, then R. Steinberg has shown (this is the formulation of R. Kane) that is a Poincaré duality algebra if and only if is a pseudoreflection group. In this note we explore the situation for fields of nonzero characteristic. We prove an analogue of Steinberg's theorem for the case and give a counterexample in the modular case when .

Let be the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup on with Gaussian kernel bounds, and let be the fractional integrals of for . For a BMO function on , we show boundedness of the commutators from to , where . Our result of this boundedness still holds when is replaced by a Lipschitz domain of with infinite measure. We give applications to large classes of differential operators such as the magnetic Schrödinger operators and second-order elliptic operators of divergence form.

It is known that the sets of extreme and exposed points of a convex Borel subset of are Borel. We show that for there exist convex subsets of such that the sets of their extreme and exposed points coincide and are of arbitrarily high Borel class. On the other hand, we show that the sets of extreme and of exposed points of a convex set of additive Borel class are of ambiguous Borel class . For proving the latter-mentioned results we show that the union of the open and the union of the closed segments of are of the additive Borel class if is a convex set of additive Borel class .

For a -smooth bump function we show that the gradient range is the closure of its interior, provided that admits a modulus of continuity satisfying as . The result is a consequence of a more general result about gradient ranges of bump functions of the same degree of smoothness. For such bump functions we show that for open sets , either the intersection is empty or its topological dimension is at least two. The proof relies on a new Morse-Sard type result where the smoothness hypothesis is independent of the dimension of the space.

In this paper, we study univalent holomorphic mappings of the unit ball in that have the property that the image contains a line for some , . We show that under certain rather reasonable conditions, up to composition with a holomorphic automorphism of the ball, the mapping is an extension of the strip mapping in the plane to higher dimensions.
