The analytical solution to Graetz problem with uniform wall heat flux is extended by including the viscous dissipation effect in the analysis. The analytical solution obtained reduces to that of Siegel, Sparrow and Hallman neglecting viscous dissipation as a limiting case. The sample developing temperature profiles, wall and bulk temperature distributions and the local Nusselt number variations are presented to illustrate the viscous dissipation effects. It is found that the role of viscous dissipation on thermal entrance region heat transfer is completely different for heating and cooling at wall. In the case of cooling at wall, a critical value of Brinkman number, Br c=−11/24, exists beyond which (−11/24<Br<0) the fluid bulk temperature will always be less than the uniform entrance temperature indicating the predominance of cooling effect over the viscous heating effect. On the other hand, with Br < Br c the bulk temperature T b will approach the wall temperature T w at some downstream position and from there onward the bulk temperature T b becomes less than the wall temperature T w with T w > B b > T 0 indicating overall heating effect for the fluid. The numerical results for the case of cooling at wall Br < 0 are believed to be of some interest in the design of the proposed artctic oil pipeline.

In this study, thermally developing laminar forced convection in a pipe including viscous dissipation and wall conductance is investigated numerically. The constant heat flux is assumed to be imposed at the outer surface of the pipe wall. The finite volume method is used. The distributions for the developing temperature and local Nusselt number in the entrance region are obtained. The dependence of the results on the Brinkman number and the dimensionless thermal conductivity are shown. The viscous heating effect on the wall is shown. Significant viscous dissipation effects have been observed for large Br.

Forced convection flow in a microchannel with constant wall temperature is studied, including viscous dissipation effect. The slip-flow regime is considered by incorporating both the velocity-slip and the temperature-jump conditions at the surface. The energy equation is solved for the developing temperature field using finite integral transform. To increase βv Kn is to increase the slip velocity at the wall surface, and hence to decrease the friction factor. Effects of the parameters βv Kn, β, and Br on the heat transfer results are illustrated and discussed in detail. For a fixed Br, the Nusselt number may be either higher or lower than those of the continuum regime, depending on the competition between the effects of βv Kn and β. At a given βv Kn the variation of local Nusselt number becomes more even when β becomes larger, accompanied by a shorter thermal entrance length. The fully developed Nusselt number decreases with increasing β irrelevant to βv Kn. The increase in Nusselt number due to viscous heating is found to be more pronounced at small βv Kn.

Forced convection with viscous dissipation in a parallel plate channel filled by a saturated porous medium is investigated numerically. Three different viscous dissipation models are examined. Two different sets of wall conditions are considered: isothermal and isoflux. Analytical expressions are also presented for the asymptotic temperature profile and the asymptotic Nusselt number. With isothermal walls, the Brinkman number significantly influences the developing Nusselt number but not the asymptotic one. At constant wall heat flux, both the developing and the asymptotic Nusselt numbers are affected by the value of the Brinkman number. The Nusselt number is sensitive to the porous medium shape factor under all conditions considered.

The asymptotic behaviour of laminar forced convection for Bingham fluid in a circular tube subjected to an axially varying wall heat flux is studied analytically. The effect of viscous dissipation is taken into account while the axial heat conduction in the fluid is considered as negligible. The asymptotic temperature profile and the asymptotic Nusselt number are determined for various axial wall heat flux distributions which yield a thermally developed region. The results obtained show a diminution in asymptotic Nusselt number when the Brinkman number and the dimensionless radius of the plug flow region increase. Comparisons with the results in the literature for Newtonian fluids show the validity of the present analysis. To cite this article: R. Khatyr et al., C. R. Mecanique 330 (2002) 69–75.

Both hydro-dynamically and thermally fully developed laminar heat transfer of non-Newtonian fluids between fixed parallel plates has been analyzed taking into account the effect of viscous dissipation of the flowing fluid. Thermal boundary condition considered is that both the plates kept at different constant heat fluxes. The energy equation, and in turn the Nusselt number, were solved analytically in terms of Brinkman number and power-law index. The findings show that the heat transfer depends on the power-law index of the flowing fluid. Pseudo-plastic and dilatant fluids manifest themselves differently in the heat transfer characteristics under the influence of viscous dissipation. Under certain conditions, the viscous dissipation effects on heat transfer between parallel plates are significant and should not be neglected.

Forced convection heat transfer in fully developed flows of viscous dissipating fluids in concentric annular ducts is analyzed analytically. Special attention has been paid to the effect of the viscous dissipation. Two different cases of the thermal boundary conditions are considered: uniform heat flux at the outer wall and adiabatic inner wall (Case A) and uniform heat flux at the inner wall and adiabatic outer wall (Case B). Solutions for the velocity and temperature distributions and the Nusselt number are obtained for different values of the aspect ratio and the Brinkman number. The present analytical results for the case without the viscous dissipation effect are compared with those available in the literature and an excellent agreement is observed. To cite this article: M. This work addresses the conjugate heat transfer of a simplified PTT fluid flowing past an unbounded sphere in the Stokes regime (Re = 0.01). The problem is numerically solved with the finite-volume method assuming axisymmetry, absence of natural convection and constant physical properties. The sphere generates heat at a constant and uniform rate, and the analysis is conducted for a range of Deborah (0 ≤ De ≤ 100), Prandtl (100 ≤ Pr ≤ 105) and Brinkman (0 ≤ Br ≤ 100) numbers, in the presence or absence of thermal contact resistance at the solid–fluid interface and for different conductivity ratios (0.1 ≤ κ ≤ 10). The drag coefficient shows a monotonic decrease with De, whereas the normalized stresses on the sphere surface and in the wake first increase and then decrease with De. A negative wake was observed for the two solvent viscosity ratios tested (β = 0.1 and 0.5), being more intense for the more elastic fluid. In the absence of viscous dissipation, the average Nusselt number starts to decrease with De after an initial increase. Heat transfer enhancement relative to an equivalent Newtonian fluid was observed for the whole range of conditions tested. The dimensionless temperature of the sphere decreases and becomes more homogeneous when its thermal conductivity increases in relation to the conductivity of the fluid, although small changes are observed in the Nusselt number. The thermal contact resistance at the interface increases the average temperature of the sphere, without affecting significantly the shape of the temperature profiles inside the sphere. When viscous dissipation is considered, significant changes are observed in the heat transfer process as Br increases. Overall, a simplified PTT fluid can moderately enhance heat transfer compared to a Newtonian fluid, but increasing De does not necessarily improve heat exchange.

Analytical solutions are obtained for heat transfer in concentric annular flows of viscoelastic fluids modeled by the simplified Phan-Thien–Tanner constitutive equation. Solutions for thermal and dynamic fully developed flow are presented for both imposed constant wall heat fluxes and imposed constant wall temperatures, always taking into account viscous dissipation.Equations are presented for the normalized temperature profile, the bulk temperature, the inner and outer wall temperatures and, through their definitions for the inner and outer Nusselt numbers as a function of all relevant non-dimensional parameters. Some special results are discussed in detail. Given the complexity of the derived equations, for ease of use compact exact expressions are presented for the Nusselt numbers and programmes to calculate all quantities are made accessible on the internet. Generally speaking, fluid elasticity is found to increase the heat transfer for imposed heating at the wall, especially in combination with internal heat generation by viscous dissipation, whereas for imposed wall temperatures it reduces heat transfer when viscous dissipation is weak.

To investigate the combined influence of Hall effect, ion slip, viscous dissipation and Joule heating on the fully developed laminar MHD channel heat transfer, the exact solution of the energy equation is derived assuming a constant wall heat flux, finely segmented electrodes and a small magnetic Reynolds number. It is concluded that there can be a substantial difference, depending upon Hartmann number, electric field intensity and Brinkman number, between the Nusselt number considering the Hall effect and that neglecting it. Representative results are presented in diagrams and in tables.

Consideration is given to the influence of viscous dissipation on the thermal entrance region laminar pipe flow heat transfer with convective boundary condition. The Eigenfunction series expansion technique is employed to solve the governing energy equation. The results for axial distributions of dimensionless bulk and wall temperatures, local Nusselt number as well as modified local Nusselt number are presented graphically forNu 0 =0.1, 2, and 100. The complicated variations of conventional local Nusselt number is due to the inappropriate definition of conventional heat transfer coefficient in this problem. A modified local heat transfer coefficient, based on the difference of bulk fluid temperature and wall temperature, is introduced. Its value can clearly indicate the extent and the direction of heat exchange between the fluid in the pipe and the ambient. The effects of outside Nusselt number are also investigated. Significant viscous dissipation effects have been observed for large Br.

Viscous dissipation effect on heat transfer characteristics of a rectangular microchannel is studied. Flow is governed by the Navier–Stokes equations with the slip flow and temperature jump boundary conditions. Integral transform technique is applied to derive the temperature distribution and Nusselt number. The velocity distribution is taken from literature. The solution method is verified for the case where viscous dissipation is neglected. It is found that, the viscous dissipation is negligible for gas flows in microchannels, since the contribution of this effect on Nu number is about 1%. However, this effect should be taken into account for much more viscous flows, such as liquid flows. Neglecting this effect for a flat microchannel with an aspect ratio of 0.1 for Br=0.04 underestimates the Nu number about 5%.

In this paper, the analytical study of forced convection heat transfer to power-law fluids in arbitrary cross-sectional ducts with finite viscous dissipation is undertaken. Both the flow and heat transfer develop simultaneously from the entrance of the duct the walls of which are maintained at a constant temperature different from the entering fluid temperature. The governing conservation equations written in curvilinear coordinates are solved using the Line-Successive-Over relaxation (LSOR) method. Numerical results of dimensionless heat transfer coefficients and temperature profiles are presented for the trapezoidal, triangular, circular and square ducts. For cooling, viscous dissipation generally augments heat transfer. At low values of Brinkman number (Br0.1), the cooling effect dominates over viscous heating in the entrance region. AsBr is increased, the location where viscous dissipation becomes important shifts closer to the entrance until a value is reached for which the effect of viscous dissipation is always predominant irrespective of the axial location. When the walls are heated, for a non-zero Brinkman number, theNu X* distribution exhibits a singularity from the negative side of theNu X* axis. As the power-law index increases, the position of this singularity shifts closer to the entrance of the duct. Far downstream of the duct, for a fixedn, Nu X* attains an asymptotic value which is independent ofBr and is at least thrice that for forced convection without viscous dissipation.

Coupled heat transfer between laminar forced convection along and conduction inside a flat plate wall is theoretically studied. The laminar convective boundary layer is analyzed by employing the integral technique. The energy equations for the fluid and the plate wall are combined under the condition of the continuity in the temperature and heat flux at the fluid-solid interface. The analysis results in a simple formal solution. Expressions have been obtained for calculating local Nusselt number, wall heat flux and temperature along the plate, all are functions of the local Brun number, Br x , which is a measure of the ratio of the thermal resistance of the plate to that of the convective boundary layer. The results indicate that for Br x ≥0.15, neglecting the plate resistance will results in an error of more than 5% in Nusselt number. Comparison of the present solution with other previous studies has been made. The solution may be of a considerable theoretical and practical interest. Received on 19 August 1998  相似文献

In this paper, the inertial and non-isothermal flow of viscoelastic fluids in a planar channel with 1:3 sudden expansion has been simulated for Brinkman numbers in the range \( - \,20 \le Br \le 20 \). The mass, momentum and energy conservation equations with the non-linear form of Phan-Thien–Tanner constitutive equation are used to describe the behavior of heated and cooled viscoelastic fluids flow. The properties of fluid are assumed temperature-dependent and the viscous dissipation terms are considered in the energy equation. The object of the current paper is to investigate the stresses and their effects on heat generation via the viscous dissipation terms in the energy equation for inertial flow of heated and cooled viscoelastic fluids. Therefore, plots of streamlines, isothermal lines, normal stress (\( \tau_{xx} \)), normal-transverse stress (\( \tau_{yy} \)) and shear stress (\( \tau_{xy} \)), total dissipation, temperature and local Nusselt numbers have been drawn and examined in the channel expansion. The results show that for the asymmetric flow of heated and cooled viscoelastic fluids, the maximum values of total dissipation are located adjacent to the lower wall and at the centerline of the channel expansion. Also, by incrementing the Brinkman number in the hydrodynamically and thermally developing and fully developed zones, the values of total dissipation are increased.

Heat transfer effects of variable viscosity and viscous dissipation for heated developing laminar flows in circular tubes have been investigated. Three studies are reported covering a comprehensive range of input data for the case of constant wall heat flux. Initially the program was used to predict the effect on heat transfer of temperature-dependent viscosity via a general temperature power relation. In addition, predictions were made for nine particular fluids covering a range of Prandtl numbers from 0.025 to 12 500, and a range of Brinkman numbers from 1.8 × 10?10 to 6.8 × 103. A more detailed study was made for two particular oils covering a range of practical interest. For the liquids considered their viscosity temperature-dependence resulted in enhancement of heat transfer, whereas for fluids with a Prandtl number <200 the effect of viscous dissipation was negligible, and for fluids of a Brinkman number > × 10?2 the outcome was a reduction of heat transfer. A numerical instability problem occurred for situations of very high viscous dissipation which limited the length of duct that could be examined.

The problem of combined free and forced convective magnetohydrodynamic flow in a vertical channel is analysed by taking into account the effect of viscous and ohmic dissipations. The channel walls are maintained at equal or at different constant temperatures. The velocity field and the temperature field are obtained analytically by perturbation series method and numerically by finite difference technique. The results are presented for various values of the Brinkman number and the ratio of Grashof number to the Reynolds number for both equal and different wall temperatures. Nusselt number at the walls is determined. It is found that the viscous dissipation enhances the flow reversal in the case of downward flow while it counters the flow in the case of upward flow. It is also found that the analytical and numerical solutions agree very well for small values of ε.

Forced convection heat transfer in a non-Newtonian fluid flow inside a pipe whose external surface is subjected to non-axisymmetric heat loads is investigated analytically. Fully developed laminar velocity distributions obtained by a power-law fluid rheology model are used, and viscous dissipation is taken into account. The effect of axial heat conduction is considered negligible. The physical properties are assumed to be constant. We consider that the smooth change in the velocity distribution inside the pipe is piecewise constant. The theoretical analysis of the heat transfer is performed by using an integral transform technique – Vodicka’s method. An important feature of this approach is that it permits an arbitrary distribution of the surrounding medium temperature and an arbitrary velocity distribution of the fluid. This technique is verified by a comparison with the existing results. The effects of the Brinkman number and rheological properties on the distribution of the local Nusselt number are shown.

In this paper, second order velocity slip and temperature jump boundary conditions are used to solve the momentum and energy equations along with isoflux thermal boundary condition at the surface of the micropipe. The flow is assumed to be hydrodynamically and thermally fully developed inside the micropipe and viscous dissipation is included in the analysis. The solution yields closed form expressions for the temperature field and Nusselt number (Nu) as a function of various modeling parameters, namely, Knudsen number and Brinkman number (Br). For the given values of Br, the maximum difference of Nu between continuum flow with first order slip model and continuum and, second order slip model is found to be 35.67 and 34.62 %, respectively. Present solution exhibits good agreement with the other theoretical models.
