Novel isosorbide derivative containing perfluorocarbon group,bi(perfluorooctanesulfonyl)isosorbide ester as chiral dopant in liquid crystal, was synthesized.Chemical structure was characterized by elemental analysis,FT-IR,1H NMR and 19F NMR.The optical texture of the mixture was observed by polarized optical microscopy(POM).Novel chiral dopant containing perfluorocarbon group had excellent optical activity. Its specific rotation and molar rotation were noticeable higher than those of bi(4-chloromethylbenzenecarbonic)isosorbide ester. The fluorocarbon group improved the molar rotation of chiral compound and did not affect optical rotation direction. The texture of the mixture added isosorbide derivative with fluorocarbon group showed the oily streak texture.  相似文献

The phase behaviour and aggregation states of a binary mixture of a nematic liquid crystal and a chiral dopant have been investigated. The nematic liquid crystal E7 was miscible with the chiral dopant S811 over their entire concentration range. Binary E7/S811 mixtures formed the N* phase for S811 contents under 20%, and the SmA* phase for S811 contents between 40% and 90%. BP and TGBA* frustrated phases were found during cooling, for S811 contents between 25% and 35%. The helical pitches of the binary mixtures decreased with increasing chiral dopant content. From XRD profiles, the orientational ordering of the binary composites was found to increase with increasing chiral dopant content.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the enlargement of liquid crystal (LC) blue-phase (BP) temperature range using the rod-like low-molecular-weight cyano phenyl-type chiral nematic LC with various core group and chiral dopant concentrations. Also, the electro-optic response time was investigated for them. We found that the BP temperature range was strongly dependent upon the core structure and the chiral dopant concentration for the chiral nematic LC mixtures having the same terminal group. Also, we found a stable BP with a wide temperature range (more than 6 K), including a BP-isotropic coexistence state over 13.5 K upon heating and cooling processes and very fast response time (less than 1 ms), by using the cyano phenyl-type chiral nematic LC mixture with a high molecular aspect ratio and a high chiral dopant concentration.  相似文献

A new type of polymer–liquid crystal composite with photovariable dichroism and birefringence is described. Porous stretched polyethylene films were used as polymer matrices. To induce a cholesteric phase in a commercial nematic host, a chiral photochromic dopant based on sorbide and cinnamic acid capable of E–Z isomerization under UV irradiation was used. A merocianine‐type substance was selected as a dichroic dye. Introduction of a dye‐doped cholesteric mixture with a helical pitch higher than ~300 nm to polymer film led to an almost complete transition from a cholesteric to an oriented nematic phase, as well as to an increase in birefringence and the appearance of dichroism. Decrease of the helical pitch by increasing in the chiral dopant concentration in the liquid crystal–polymer composite results in a reduction of the dichroism values. UV irradiation of polymer composite leading to an isomerization of the chiral dopant and helix untwisting induces a noticeable gradual growth of dichroism and birefringence. These new composites can be considered as promising materials for optical applications.  相似文献

Thermo-recording in a [side chain type smectic A liquid crystal polymer (SmA-LCP)/nematic liquid crystal (N-LC)/chiral dopant/dichroic dye] composite has been realized by using 2mW of power from a He-Ne laser. The laser irradiation-induced phase transitions of smectic A (SmA) → chiral nematic (N*) → SmA formed the dominant thermo-recording mechanism in the composite. Thermo-recording in the (SmA-LCP/N-LC/chiral dopant/dichroic dye) composite exhibited a higher contrast when compared with the non-polymeric (SmA-LC)/N-LC/chiral dopant/dichroic dye composite.  相似文献

The light switching characteristics induced by a thermal smectic A (SmA) ? chiral nematic (N*) phase transition were studied for homeotropically aligned [smectic A liquid crystal (SmA-LC)/nematic liquid crystal (N-LC)/chiral dopant] and [side chain type smectic A liquid crystalline polymer (SmA-LCP)/N-LC/chiral dopant] composites. A drastic change from a transparent SmA phase to a light-scattering N* phase occurred in both composites upon heating. In the case of the heat-induced N* phase for the (SmA-LC/N-LC/chiral dopant) composite, the N* phase exhibited weak light scattering due to formation of a scroll texture. On the other hand, in the case of the heat-induced N* phase for the (SmA-LCP/N-LC/chiral dopant) composite, the N* phase showed strong light scattering due to formation of a focalconic texture. The existence of a SmA-LCP was responsible for a higher contrast ratio between the transparent SmA phase and the light scattering N* phase for the (SmA-LCP/ N-LC/chiral dopant) composite than for the (SA-LCN/N-LC/chiral dopant) composite.  相似文献

The Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation has been utilised to synthesise a new glassy chiral dopant with large helical twisting power (β) and remarkable solubility in nematic liquid crystal hosts. Values of β range between +30.7 and +47.7 μm?1 in five different nematic hosts. A 26% mixture in E7 is homogenous indefinitely and induces a room-temperature blue phase.  相似文献

A photosensitive fluorescent cholesteric guest-host mixture consisting of a nematic polyacrylate, a chiral, photochromic dopant sensitive to UV light, and a fluorescent dopant was prepared. The nematic polyacrylate contains 4-phenyl-4'-methoxybenzoate nematogenic side groups and photochromic 4-cyanoazobenzene side groups. The chiral-photochromic dopant formed by isosorbide and cinnamic acid is capable of E-Z photoisomerization and [2 + 2] photo-cycloaddition under light irradiation. The planarly oriented films possess a selective light reflection in the visible spectral region coinciding with the emission peak of the fluorescent dopant. The fluorescence emitted by the planarly oriented films of the mixture is strongly circularly polarized and characterized by a large value of the dis-symmetry factor. At temperatures below glass transition (T(g)) the polarized light action of an Ar(+) laser (488 nm) leads to the photo-orientation of the azobenzene fragments resulting in a strong and reversible disruption of the selective reflection and a decrease of the dis-symmetry factor of fluorescence. UV irradiation leads to E-Z isomerization and/or [2 + 2] cycloaddition of the chiral-photochromic dopant, causing an irreversible shift of the maximum of the dis-symmetry factor to a long-wavelength spectral region under subsequent annealing at temperatures higher than T(g). Such multifunctional glass-forming guest-host mixtures combining photosensitive and fluorescent properties with the unique optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals can be considered as promising material for optical data processing technologies and photonic applications.  相似文献

The photoluminescence spectra of chiral nematic liquid crystals doped with dodecanethiol-functionalised silver nanoparticles has been investigated. The peak intensity level of the photoluminescence in PL spectra was found to be consonant with the concentration (0.005–0.020 wt%) of silver nanoparticles. An uptrend of enhancement in the peak intensity was also recorded up till 0.015 wt% of dopant concentration, above which a fall in the peak intensity was recorded. A significant shift in the peak position was also detected with chiral dopant concentration. Electrically induced optical hysteresis was observed in the doped samples, which virtually vamooses at 0.020 wt% dopant concentration. Marked improvement in the attributes of silver-doped chiral nematic liquid crystal material under investigation has ensured vital appositeness of the composite for making memory and high-contrast display devices.  相似文献

The phase of a liquid crystal (LC) changing from a nematic phase to a cholesteric (Ch) mesophase is achieved by adding different ratios of chiral dopants S811. By studying the transmission spectrum, we are able to measure the helical pitch in cholesteric phase. The pitch in the mixtures of nematic E7 and chiral dopants S811 as a function of the concentration of the dopant and temperature is investigated. The sensitivity of the selective reflection notch of the cholesteric phase to the thermal tuning depends strongly on the ratios of the chiral dopants. It reveals that the influence of temperature is more profound for those cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) which exhibit smectic A (SmA) at lower temperatures. When fitted using Keating's formula, the helical pitch calculated from our experimental results lies on the predicted curve. Optimised ratios of the mixture CLCs for the optimised reflection band with the specified wavelength ranging from 467 nm to 2123 nm are suggested.  相似文献

A (photo-polymerizable liquid crystal (LC) monomer/LCs/chiral dopant/photoinitiator) mixture with a smectic A (SmA)-chiral nematic (N*) phase transition was sandwiched between two ITO glass substrates which were not subjected to any surface orientation treatment. When an electric field-induced homeotropically oriented SmA phase of the mixture was irradiated with UV light, an oriented liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) network was formed upon photo-polymerization of the LC monomer. Then, a (homeotropically oriented LCP network/LCs/chiral dopant) composite with a SmA-N* phase transition was prepared. A focal-conic texture appeared in the heat-induced N* phase of the composite upon heating from the transparent state of the homeotropically oriented SmA phase; the focal-conic texture exhibited strong light scattering. Upon cooling the composite to the SmA phase, this phase was again homeotropically oriented due to the strong intermolecular interaction between the LC molecules and the homeotropically oriented LCP network. Thus, the transparent state of the SmA phase and the light scattering state of the N* phase occurred reversibly upon cooling and heating, accompanied by the thermal SmA-N* phase transition.  相似文献

In this study,a novel series of chiral 1,2-propanediol derivatives with different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and ~1H NMR.The helical twisting properties of all the chiral dopants were investigated by doping the chiral dopants into a nematic liquid crystal host(SLC-1717).The results indicate that the donor-acceptor electron effect have a prominent influence on helical twisting property of the chiral nematic phase induced by the chiral dopants. Introducing electron-withdrawing groups into the terminal ends of chiral 1,2-propanediol can decrease the absolute values of the helical twisting power. In addition, the helix inversion temperatures of the induced chiral nematic phase are variational with the change of terminal groups.  相似文献

New chiral dopants, possessing a trifluoromethyl group, have been synthesized. These dopants have different polar groups, located between the chiral centre and the diphenylacetylene core. The polar part is chosen from ester, methylene ether and ether linkages. Each new chiral dopant was mixed with a non-chiral liquid crystal mixture or a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture, and their transition temperatures and electrooptic properties measured. The largest spontaneous polarization, 4·1 nC cm-2, was obtained at 25°C for the ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture in which the dopant, with a methylene ether linkage, was incorporated. Molecular orbital calculations (MNDO method) for the dopants show that the calculated dipole moments are correlated with the measured spontaneous polarization, and the calculated results explain the experimental results quite well. In addition, it has been found that the conformation of the chiral part is an important factor which affects the magnitude of spontaneous polarization.  相似文献

A series of polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) cells were prepared by photo‐polymerization of a cholesteric liquid crystal (Ch‐LC) mixture containing a nonreactive LC, a nematic diacrylate and a novel cholesteryl monomer. The influence of the specific rotation and concentration of the chiral dopants, and the polymerization temperature on reflection properties was investigated. The results demonstrate that the reflection band was broadened after polymerization for all the systems both left‐handed S811 and right‐handed R1011 as the chiral dopant, which is speculated to be a result of an inhomogeneous consumption of the chiral monomer within the system. Additionally, the polymer temperature plays an integral role in the observed reflection spectra, and at optimum polymerization temperature the broadband reflection effect becomes much more pronounced. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the role of microscopic changes of the polymer network induced by polymerization temperature. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT

Two recently reported methods for measuring weak chirality using nematic liquid crystals are described. These are between one and two orders of magnitude more sensitive than the standard Grandjean-Cano wedge. Pitch lengths of 50 mm have been measured with prospects for extending this beyond 100 mm; this is equivalent to measuring the presence of 1 ppm of a strong chiral dopant. Results for a number of standard chiral dopants and nematic liquid crystal hosts are reported.  相似文献

Novel chiral molecules containing cationic groups, (N-[4-triethylammoniomethyl]-benzoyl ester)-ethyl lactate chloride and bi-(N-[4-triethylammoniomethyl]-benzoyl ester)-isosorbide chloride, were designed and synthesized. Chemical structures of the molecules were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, and (1)H NMR. The photochemical properties of the chiral compounds and their textures in nematic liquid crystals (LCs) were investigated by optical rotation, circular dichroism (CD), and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). The novel chiral molecules exhibited good optical activity. The chiral compound based on a L-ethyl lactate chiral center had a left-handed configuration. The chiral compound based on an isosorbide chiral center had a right-handed configuration. The cationic polar groups did not affect the direction of optical rotation, but could effluence the molar rotation of chiral compounds. The mixtures with dopants showed oily streak textures. Doping of a nematic phase liquid crystal with the chiral molecules converted it to the cholesteric phase.  相似文献

Prior examinations have reported that polymer stabilisation of azobenzene-based cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) mixtures can reduce the time necessary for complete colour restoration in the dark from three days to as few as five minutes. This work extends upon these prior examinations by exploring and elucidating the role of crosslinker concentration and monomer polarity on the colour restoration of a representative CLC mixture composed of a high HTP bis(azo) binapthanyl chiral dopant (QL76) mixed into the cyanobiphenyl nematic liquid crystal host MDA-00-1444. The impact of these variables was unexpectedly convoluted. In all the formulations examined here, polymer stabilisation dramatically reduces the time for complete colour restoration of the starting reflection notch. In mixtures based on nonpolar liquid crystal monomers, increasing the crosslinker concentration reduces the time necessary for complete colour restoration. However, the dependence on crosslinker concentration reverses in mixtures composed from polar liquid crystal monomers in which increasing the crosslinker concentration serves to increase the time necessary for complete colour restoration.  相似文献

In addition, it has been found that the conformation of the chiral part is an important factor which affects the magnitude of spontaneous polarization.  相似文献
