Hysteresis in cycling through first-order phase transitions in vortex matter, akin to the well-studied phenomenon of supercooling of water, has been discussed in literature. Hysteresis can be seen while varying either temperature T or magnetic field H (and thus the density of vortices). Our recent work on phase transitions with two control variables shows that the observable region of metastability of the supercooled phase would depend on the path followed in H-T space, and will be larger when T is lowered at constant H compared to the case when H is lowered at constant T. We discuss the effect of isothermal field variations on metastable supercooled states produced by field-cooling. This path dependence is not a priori applicable to metastability caused by reduced diffusivity or hindered kinetics.  相似文献

We report on transport measurements of YBa 2Cu 3O (7-delta) single crystals with different oxygen contents in the geometry B, J ||ab (J perpendicularB). Our data show that the vortices become confined between the Cu-O planes below a well-defined temperature at which the effective size 2xi of the vortex core is approximately equal to the period of the Cu-O layers. This confinement strongly increases the vortex liquid freezing temperature. A new melting line is found separating a vortex liquid and a smectic phase, which shows an oscillatory field dependence reflecting differences between commensurate and incommensurate smectic states.  相似文献

A theoretical explanation for the I–V characteristic of type II superconductors in the vortex state is provided. The run of the experimental I–V curves is associated with discontinuities and depends on the experimental prehistory. It is conjectured that dynamic phase transitions occur in the network of mobile and immobile channels along which the vortices travel when a transport current is applied. We consider the vortex structure of a rapidly rotating trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a corotating periodic optical lattice potential. We observe a rich variety of structural phases which reflect the interplay of the vortex-vortex and vortex-lattice interactions. The lattice structure is very sensitive to the ratio of vortices to pinning sites and we observe structural phase transitions and domain formation as this ratio is varied.  相似文献

We study numerically the dynamics relating to negative vortex motion in inhomogeneous pinning systems. We show that this dynamical phenomenon results from the internal field effect produced by the growing local barriers with decreasing temperature. We find that the negative motion is characterized by a peak of negative voltage or resistance in resistance–temperature transport measurements. We also demonstrate that the time window to observe the negative motion is determined by the magnitude of driving force in addition to the temperature scanning rate.  相似文献

The far from equilibrium steady states of a simple nonlinear chemical system are analyzed. A standard macroscopic analysis shows that the nonlinearity introduces an instability which causes a transition analogous to a thermodynamic second-order phase transition. Fluctuations are introduced into this model through a stochastic master equation approach. The solution of this master equation in the steady state reveals that the system goes into a more ordered state above the transition point. The theory and the results of an investigation of nonequilibrium noise-induced phase transitions in the simple example of a physical pendulum with a randomly oscillating pivot are presented. It is shown that such transitions lead to the appearance of a more ordered state of the system. Systems with absorbing (trapped) states may exhibit a nonequilibrium phase transition from a noise-free inactive phase into an ever-lasting active phase. We briefly review the absorbing critical phenomena and universality classes, and discuss over the controversial issues on the pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD). Two different approaches are proposed to clarify its universality issue, which unveil strong evidences that the PCPD belongs to a new universality class other than the directed percolation class.  相似文献

Motivated by the strong, low temperature damping of nodal quasiparticles observed in some cuprate superconductors, we study quantum phase transitions in d(x(2)-y(2)) superconductors with a spin-singlet, zero momentum, fermion bilinear order parameter. We present a complete, group-theoretic classification of such transitions into seven distinct cases (including cases with nematic order) and analyze fluctuations by the renormalization group. We find that only two, the transitions to d(x(2)-y(2))+is and d(x(2)-y(2))+id(xy) pairing, possess stable fixed points with universal damping of nodal quasiparticles; the latter leaves the gapped quasiparticles along (1,0), (0,1) essentially undamped.  相似文献

A 3D layered system of charges with logarithmic interaction parallel to the layers and random dipoles is studied via a novel variational method and an energy rationale which reproduces the known phase diagram for a single layer. Increasing interlayer coupling leads to successive transitions in which charge rods correlated in N>1 neighboring layers are nucleated by weaker disorder. For layered superconductors in the limit of only magnetic interlayer coupling, the method predicts and locates a disorder induced defect-unbinding transition in the flux lattice. While N = 1 charges dominate there, N>1 disorder induced defect rods are predicted for multilayer superconductors.  相似文献

Thermodynamics governing the synthesis of DNA and RNA strands under a template is considered analytically and applied to the population dynamics of competing replicators. We find a nonequilibrium phase transition for high values of polymerase fidelity in a single replicator, where the two phases correspond to stationary states with higher elongation velocity and lower error rate than the other. At the critical point, the susceptibility linking velocity to thermodynamic force diverges. The overall behavior closely resembles the liquid-vapor phase transition in equilibrium. For a population of self-replicating macromolecules, Eigen's error catastrophe transition precedes this thermodynamic phase transition during starvation. For a given thermodynamic force, the fitness of replicators increases with increasing polymerase fidelity above a threshold.  相似文献

We establish a set of nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions in the Dicke model by considering a monochromatic nonadiabatic modulation of the atom-field coupling. For weak driving the system exhibits a set of sidebands which allow the circumvention of the no-go theorem which otherwise forbids the occurrence of superradiant phase transitions. At strong driving we show that the system exhibits a rich multistable structure and exhibits both first- and second-order nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions.  相似文献
