Investigation of thin metallic film properties by means of picosecond ultrasonics [C. Thomsen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 53, 989 (1984)] has been under the scope of several studies. Generation of longitudinal and shear waves [T. Pézeril et al., Phys. Rev. B 73, 132301 (2006); O. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 095501 (2004)] with a wave vector normal to the film free surface has been demonstrated. Such measurements cannot provide complete information about properties of anisotropic films. Extreme focusing of a laser pump beam (≈0.5 μm) on the sample surface has recently allowed us to provide evidence of picosecond acoustic diffraction in thin metallic films (≈1 μm) [C. Rossignol et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 166106 (2005)]. The resulting longitudinal and shear wavefronts propagate at group velocity through the bulk of the film. To interpret the received signals, source directivity diagrams are calculated taking into account material anisotropy, optical penetration, and laser beam width on the sample surface. It is shown that acoustic diffraction increases with optical penetration, so competing with the increasing of directivity caused by beam width. Reflection with mode conversion at the film-substrate interface is discussed.  相似文献

Josephson oscillation of a superfluid Fermi gas   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Using the complete numerical solution of a time-dependent three-dimensional mean-field model we study the Josephson oscillation of a superfluid Fermi gas (SFG) at zero temperature formed in a combined axially-symmetric harmonic plus one-dimensional periodic optical-lattice (OL) potentials after displacing the harmonic trap along the axial OL axis. We study the dependence of Josephson frequency on the strength of the OL potential. The Josephson frequency decreases with increasing strength as found in the experiment of Cataliotti et al. [Science 293, 843 (2001)] for a Bose-Einstein condensate and of the experiment of Pezzè et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 120401 (2004)] for an ideal Fermi gas. We demonstrate a breakdown of Josephson oscillation in the SFG for a large displacement of the harmonic trap. These features of Josephson oscillation of a SFG can be tested experimentally.  相似文献

A one channel distorted wave approximation has been used to calculate the ionization cross section for the 3s electron of Na atom by alpha particle impact. For a consistency check we have also run the standard CDW-EIS code of McSherry et al. [Comput. Phys. Commun. 155, 144 (2003)] and found reasonable agreement in the high energy region among the present results, the CDW-EIS results and the classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) calculations. It is also found that the present results tend to agree qualitatively with the low energy measurement of Knoop et al. [J. Phys. B 38, 1987 (2005)] at as low as 10 keV amu-1, although the present theoretical approach is expected to be suitable in the high energy area. This qualitative agreement in the low energy region is attributed to the partially correlated ground state wave function used in the present calculation.  相似文献

Experience has shown that theoretically determined lifetimes of bulk states of hot electrons in real metals agree quantitatively with the experimental ones, if theory fully takes into account the crystal structure and many-body effects of the investigated metal, i.e., if the Dyson equation is solved at the ab initio level and the effective electron–electron interaction is determined beyond the plasmon-pole approximation. Therefore the hitherto invoked transport effect [Knoesel et al.: Phys. Rev. B 57, 12812 (1998)] does not seem to exist. In this paper we show that likewise neither virtual states [Hertel: et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 535 (1996)] nor damped band-gap states [Ogawa: et al.: Phys. Rev. B 55, 10869 (1997)] exist, but that the hitherto unexplained d-band catastrophe in Cu [Cu(111), Cu(110)] can be naturally resolved by the concept of the transient exciton. This is a new quasiparticle in metals, which owes its existence to the dynamical character of dielectric screening at the microscopic level. This means that excitons, though they do not exist under stationary conditions, can be observed under ultrafast experimental conditions. The M X-ray production differential cross sections in Re, Bi and U elements have been measured at the 5.96 keV incident photon energy in an angular range 135°–155°. The measurements were performed using a 55Fe source and a Si(Li) detector. The present results contradict the predictions of Cooper and Zare [Atomic Collision Processes, Gordon and Breach, New York (1969)] and experimental results of Kumar et al. [J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. 34, 613 (2001)]. that, after photoionization of inner shells, the vacancy state has equal population of magnetic substates and the subsequent X-ray emission is isotropic, but confirm the predictions of the calculations of Flügge et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 29, 7 (1972)] and experimental results of Sharma and Allawadhi [J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. 32, 2343 (1999)] and Ertugrul [Nucl. Instrum. Meth. B 119, 345 (1996)]. Total M X-ray production cross sections from the decay at the 5.96 keV photon energies are found to be in good agreement with the calculated theoretical results using the theoretical values of M shell photoionization cross section.  相似文献

It has recently been claimed that the dynamics of long-wavelength phason fluctuations has been observed in i-AlPdMn quasicrystals [S. Francoual et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 225501 (2003); A. Létoublon et al. 54, 753 (2001)]. We will show that the data reported call for a more detailed development of the elasticity theory of Jarić and Nelsson [M.V. Jarić and D.R. Nelsson, Phys. Rev. B 37, 4458 (1988)] in order to determine the nature of small phonon-like atomic displacements with a symmetry that follows the phason elastic constants. We also show that a simple model with a single diffusing tile is sufficient to produce a signal that (1) is situated at a “satellite position” at a distance q from each Bragg peak; that (2) has an intensity that scales with the intensity of the corresponding Bragg peak; (3) falls off as 1/q2; and (4) has a time decay constant that is proportional to 1/Dq2. It is thus superfluous to call for a picture of “phason waves” in order to explain such data, especially as such “waves” violate many physical principles.  相似文献

Nonlinear metamaterials have been predicted to support new and exciting domains in the manipulation of light, including novel phase-matching schemes for wave mixing. Most notable is the so-called nonlinear-optical mirror, in which a nonlinear negative-index medium emits the generated frequency towards the source of the pump. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear-optical mirror effect in a bulk negative-index nonlinear metamaterial, along with two other novel phase-matching configurations, utilizing periodic poling to switch between the three phase-matching domains.  相似文献

We previously observed that an intrinsic staking fault shrunk through a glide of a Shockley partial dislocation terminating its lower end in a hard-sphere crystal under gravity coherently grown in ?001? by Monte Carlo simulations [Mori et al., Molec. Phys. 105, 1377 (2007)]; it was an answer to a one-decade long standing question why the stacking disorder in colloidal crystals reduced under gravity [Zhu et al., Nature 387, 883 (1997)]. Here, we present an elastic energy calculation; in addition to the self-energy of the partial dislocation [Mori et al., Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl. 178, 33 (2009)] we calculate the cross-coupling term between elastic field due to gravity and that due to a Shockley partial dislocation. The cross-term is an increasing function of the linear dimension R over which the elastic field expands, showing that a driving force arises for the partial dislocation moving toward the upper boundary of a grain.  相似文献

On the basis of the high-pressure diamond anvil cell experiments on Os metal, Cynn et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 135701-1 (2002)] have reported that this metal has lower compressibility than diamond. In the present work we have reanalysed the experimental data of Cynn et al. We find that the bulk moduli of Os and diamond are close to each other, implying that Os metal is as incompressible as diamond, but not more so. Our first principles total energy calculations using the full potential linearised augmented plane wave method on Os and diamond also suggest the same results.  相似文献

We report on the measurement of the electro-optic or Pockels coefficient of titanosillenite crystals and show that there is no sensible wavelength dispersion, at least in the explored 510–650 nm wavelength range. This result is in close agreement with a previous paper by Papazoglou et al.: Appl. Phys. B 65, 499–503 (1997) for titanosillenites but in contradiction with a recent paper by Efremidis et al.: Appl. Phys. B 95, 467–473 (2009) reporting on a large dispersion for sillenite crystals. We stress on the fact that photoinduced space-charge electrical polarization may be at the origin of a misleading apparent wavelength dependence of the electro-optic coefficient.  相似文献

The roughening of interfaces moving in inhomogeneous media is investigated by numerical integration of the phenomenological stochastic differential equation proposed by Kardar, Parisi, and Zhang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 889 (1986)] with quenched noise (QKPZ) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 920 (1995)]. We express the evolution equations for the mean height and the roughness into two contributions: the local and the lateral one in order to compare them with the local and the lateral contributions obtained for the directed percolation depinning models (DPD) introduced independently by Tang and Leschhorn [Phys. Rev A 45, R8309 (1992)] and Buldyrev et al. [Phys. Rev A 45, R8313 (1992)]. These models are classified in the same universality class of the QKPZ although the mechanisms of growth are quite different. In the DPD models the lateral contribution is a coupled effect of the competition between the local growth and the lateral one. In these models the lateral contribution leads to an increasing of the roughness near the criticality while in the QKPZ equation this contribution always flattens the roughness. A simple theoretical model is proposed which describes the positive sign of the nonlinear absorption resonances in the experiments of Akul’shin et al. [Phys. Rev. A 57, 2996 (1998)]. An analytical expression for the linear response to a weak probe field is obtained in the weak-saturation limit. It is shown that the positive sign of sub-natural-width resonances is due to the spontaneous transfer of low-frequency coherence from an excited level to the ground state. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. A Fokker-Planck equation derived from statistical mechanics by M. S. Green [J. Chem. Phys. 20:1281 (1952)] has been used by Grabertet al. [Phys. Rev. A 21:2136 (1980)] to study fluctuations in nonlinear irreversible processes. These authors remarked that a phenomenological Langevin approach would not have given the correct reversible part of the Fokker-Planck drift flux, from which they concluded that the Langevin approach is untrustworthy for systems with partly reversible fluxes. Here it is shown that a simple modification of the Langevin approach leads to precisely the same covariant Fokker-Planck equation as that of Grabertet al., including the reversible drift terms. The modification consists of augmenting the usual nonlinear Langevin equation by adding to the deterministic flow a correction term which vanishes in the limit of zero fluctuations, and which is self-consistently determined from the assumed form of the equilibrium distribution by imposing the usual potential conditions. This development provides a simple phenomenological route to the Fokker-Planck equation of Green, which has previously appeared to require a more microscopic treatment. It also extends the applicability of the Langevin approach to fluctuations in a wider class of nonlinear systems.  相似文献

A remarkable theorem by Clifton et al [Found Phys. 33(11), 1561–1591 (2003)] (CBH) characterizes quantum theory in terms of information-theoretic principles. According to Bub [Stud. Hist. Phil. Mod. Phys. 35 B, 241–266 (2004); Found. Phys. 35(4), 541–560 (2005)] the philosophical significance of the theorem is that quantum theory should be regarded as a “principle” theory about (quantum) information rather than a “constructive” theory about the dynamics of quantum systems. Here we criticize Bub’s principle approach arguing that if the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics remains intact then there is no escape route from solving the measurement problem by constructive theories. We further propose a (Wigner-type) thought experiment that we argue demonstrates that quantum mechanics on the information-theoretic approach is incomplete.  相似文献

The temperature and field dependences χ(T,H) in La2CuO4+δ single crystals with δ<0.015 have been investigated in magnetic fields 0.1<H<450 Oe by the differential magnetic susceptibility method. It was found that under oxygen doping conditions ferromagnetic regions are formed. These regions produce a characteristic curve of the magnetic susceptibility χ(T,H), which is observed only in magnetic fields of less than 50 Oe. This can be explained by the formation of ferrons [A. Some MIT researchers [Phys. Rev. A 75, 042327 (2007)] have recently claimed that their implementation of the Slutsky-Brandt attack [Phys. Rev. A 57, 2383 (1998); Phys. Rev. A 71, 042312 (2005)] to the BB84 quantum-key-distribution (QKD) protocol puts the security of this protocol “to the test” by simulating “the most powerful individual-photon attack” [Phys. Rev. A 73, 012315 (2006)]. A related unfortunate news feature by a scientific journal [G. Brumfiel, Quantum cryptography is hacked, News @ Nature (april 2007); Nature 447, 372 (2007)] has spurred some concern in the QKD community and among the general public by misinterpreting the implications of this work. The present article proves the existence of a stronger individual attack on QKD protocols with encrypted error correction, for which tight bounds are shown, and clarifies why the claims of the news feature incorrectly suggest a contradiction with the established “old-style” theory of BB84 individual attacks. The full implementation of a quantum cryptographic protocol includes a reconciliation and a privacy-amplification stage, whose choice alters in general both the maximum extractable secret and the optimal eavesdropping attack. The authors of [Phys. Rev. A 75, 042327 (2007)] are concerned only with the error-free part of the so-called sifted string, and do not consider faulty bits, which, in the version of their protocol, are discarded. When using the provably superior reconciliation approach of encrypted error correction (instead of error discard), the Slutsky-Brandt attack is no more optimal and does not “threaten” the security bound derived by Lütkenhaus [Phys. Rev. A 59, 3301 (1999)]. It is shown that the method of Slutsky and collaborators [Phys. Rev. A 57, 2383 (1998)] can be adapted to reconciliation with error correction, and that the optimal entangling probe can be explicitly found. Moreover, this attack fills Lütkenhaus bound, proving that it is tight (a fact which was not previously known).  相似文献

We continue the study of parametric down conversion within the framework of the Wigner representation, by using a Maxwellian approach developed in a recent paper [A. Casado et al., Eur. Phys. J. D 11, 465 (2000)]. This gives a mechanism, inside the crystal, for the production of the down-converted radiation. We obtain the electric field to second order in the coupling constant by using the Green's function method, and compare our treatment with the standard Hamiltonian approach. The spectrum of the down-converted radiation is calculated as a function of the parameters of the nonlinear crystal (in particular the length) and the radius of the pumping beam. EURISOL foil-targets have to withstand a primary proton beam of 1 GeV kinetic energy and up to 100 μA beam current. These foil targets will be based on previous high-power target concepts, i.e. the RIST target [J.R.J. Bennett et al., Nucl. Instrum. Meth. Phys. Res. B 126, 117 (1997)] or high power targets used at TRIUMF [P. Bricault et al., Nucl. Instrum. Meth. Phys. Res. B 204, 319 (2003), M. Dombsky et al., Nucl. Instrum. Meth. Phys. Res. B 204, 191 (2003)]. A single target unit is capable of dissipating up to 25 kW, hence, several target units can be merged together by individual transfer lines to one common ion source. The single target units will be irradiated by a proton beam in a time sharing mode to distribute the primary proton beam current to the individual target units. In this feasibility study the necessary properties of high-power foil targets are discussed and the requirements to design a foil target according to the proton beam parameters [CITE] for the future EURISOL facility are given.  相似文献
