Let be the category of chain complexes of -modules on a topological space (where is a sheaf of rings on ). We put a Quillen model structure on this category in which the cofibrant objects are built out of flat modules. More precisely, these are the dg-flat complexes. Dually, the fibrant objects will be called dg-cotorsion complexes. We show that this model structure is monoidal, solving the previous problem of not having any monoidal model structure on . As a corollary, we have a general framework for doing homological algebra in the category of -modules. I.e., we have a natural way to define the functors and in .

Let , the moduli space of -pointed stable genus zero curves, and let be the quotient of by the action of on the last marked points. The cones of effective divisors , , are calculated. Using this, upper bounds for the cones generated by divisors with moving linear systems are calculated, , along with the induced bounds on the cones of ample divisors of and . As an application, the cone is analyzed in detail.

The classification of curves of genus 2 over an algebraically closed field was studied by Clebsch and Bolza using invariants of binary sextic forms, and completed by Igusa with the computation of the corresponding three-dimensional moduli variety . The locus of curves with group of automorphisms isomorphic to one of the dihedral groups or is a one-dimensional subvariety.

In this paper we classify these curves over an arbitrary perfect field of characteristic in the case and in the case. We first parameterize the -isomorphism classes of curves defined over by the -rational points of a quasi-affine one-dimensional subvariety of ; then, for every curve representing a point in that variety we compute all of its -twists, which is equivalent to the computation of the cohomology set .

The classification is always performed by explicitly describing the objects involved: the curves are given by hyperelliptic models and their groups of automorphisms represented as subgroups of . In particular, we give two generic hyperelliptic equations, depending on several parameters of , that by specialization produce all curves in every -isomorphism class.

Given a vector space of homogeneous polynomials of the same degree over an infinite field, consider a generic subspace of . The main result of this paper is a lower-bound (in general sharp) for the dimensions of the spaces spanned in each degree by the partial derivatives of the forms generating , in terms of the dimensions of the spaces spanned by the partial derivatives of the forms generating the original space .

Rephrasing our result in the language of commutative algebra (where this result finds its most important applications), we have: let be a type artinian level algebra with -vector , and let, for , be the -vector of the generic type level quotient of having the same socle degree . Then we supply a lower-bound (in general sharp) for the -vector . Explicitly, we will show that, for any ,

This result generalizes a recent theorem of Iarrobino (which treats the case ).

Finally, we begin to obtain, as a consequence, some structure theorems for level -vectors of type bigger than 2, which is, at this time, a very little explored topic.

The Graham-Rothschild Parameter Sets Theorem is one of the most powerful results of Ramsey Theory. (The Hales-Jewett Theorem is its most trivial instance.) Using the algebra of , the Stone-Cech compactification of a discrete semigroup, we derive an infinitary extension of the Graham-Rothschild Parameter Sets Theorem. Even the simplest finite instance of this extension is a significant extension of the original. The original theorem says that whenever in and the -parameter words are colored with finitely many colors, there exist a color and an -parameter word with the property that whenever a -parameter word of length is substituted in , the result is in the specified color. The ``simplest finite instance' referred to above is that, given finite colorings of the -parameter words for each , there is one -parameter word which works for each . Some additional Ramsey Theoretic consequences are derived.

We also observe that, unlike any other Ramsey Theoretic result of which we are aware, central sets are not necessarily good enough for even the and version of the Graham-Rothschild Parameter Sets Theorem.

We prove a -resolution theorem for simply connected CW- complexes in extension theory in the class of metrizable compacta . This means that if is a connected CW-complex, is an abelian group, , , for , and (in the sense of extension theory, that is, is an absolute extensor for ), then there exists a metrizable compactum and a surjective map such that:

(a) is -acyclic,

(b) , and

(c) .

This implies the -resolution theorem for arbitrary abelian groups for cohomological dimension when . Thus, in case is an Eilenberg-MacLane complex of type , then (c) becomes .

If in addition , then (a) can be replaced by the stronger statement,

(aa) is -acyclic.

To say that a map is -acyclic means that for each , every map of the fiber to is nullhomotopic.

It is the aim of this article to give extremal majorants of type for the class of functions sgn, where . As applications we obtain positive definite extensions to of defined on , where , optimal bounds in Hilbert-type inequalities for the class of functions , and majorants of type for functions whose graphs are trapezoids.

By introducing Frobenius morphisms on algebras and their modules over the algebraic closure of the finite field of elements, we establish a relation between the representation theory of over and that of the -fixed point algebra over . More precisely, we prove that the category    mod- of finite-dimensional -modules is equivalent to the subcategory of finite-dimensional -stable -modules, and, when is finite dimensional, we establish a bijection between the isoclasses of indecomposable -modules and the -orbits of the isoclasses of indecomposable -modules. Applying the theory to representations of quivers with automorphisms, we show that representations of a modulated quiver (or a species) over can be interpreted as -stable representations of the corresponding quiver over . We further prove that every finite-dimensional hereditary algebra over is Morita equivalent to some , where is the path algebra of a quiver over and is induced from a certain automorphism of . A close relation between the Auslander-Reiten theories for and is established. In particular, we prove that the Auslander-Reiten (modulated) quiver of is obtained by ``folding" the Auslander-Reiten quiver of . Finally, by taking Frobenius fixed points, we are able to count the number of indecomposable representations of a modulated quiver over with a given dimension vector and to generalize Kac's theorem for all modulated quivers and their associated Kac-Moody algebras defined by symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrices.

We investigate the functional distribution of -functions with real primitive characters on the region as varies over fundamental discriminants. Actually we establish the so-called universality theorem for in the -aspect. From this theorem we can, of course, deduce some results concerning the value distribution and the non-vanishing. As another corollary, it follows that for any fixed with and positive integers , there exist infinitely many such that for every the -th derivative has at least zeros on the interval in the real axis. We also study the value distribution of for fixed with and variable , and obtain the denseness result concerning class numbers of quadratic fields.

Let be a nilpotent Lie algebra, over a field of characteristic zero, and its universal enveloping algebra. In this paper we study: (1) the prime ideal structure of related to finitely generated -modules , and in particular the set of associated primes for such (note that now is equal to the set of annihilator primes for ); (2) the problem of nontriviality for the modules when is a (maximal) prime of , and in particular when is the augmentation ideal of . We define the support of , as a natural generalization of the same notion from commutative theory, and show that it is the object of primary interest when dealing with (2). We also introduce and study the reduced localization and the reduced support, which enables to better understand the set . We prove the following generalization of a stability result given by W. Casselman and M. S. Osborne in the case when , as in the theorem, are abelian. We also present some of its interesting consequences.

Theorem. Let be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra over a field of characteristic zero, and an ideal of ; denote by the universal enveloping algebra of . Let be a -module which is finitely generated as an -module. Then every annihilator prime of , when is regarded as a -module, is -stable for the adjoint action of on .

Let be an excellent homogeneous Noetherian graded ring and let be a finitely generated graded -module. We consider as a module over and show that the -loci of are open in . In particular, the Cohen-Macaulay locus    is Cohen-Macaulay is an open subset of . We also show that the -loci on the homogeneous parts of are eventually stable. As an application we obtain that for a finitely generated Cohen-Macaulay module over an excellent ring and for an ideal which is not contained in any minimal prime of , the -loci for the modules are eventually stable.

Suppose that is a finite -solvable group. We associate to every irreducible complex character of a canonical pair , where is a -subgroup of and , uniquely determined by up to -conjugacy. This pair behaves as a Green vertex and partitions into ``families" of characters. Using the pair , we give a canonical choice of a certain -radical subgroup of and a character associated to which was predicted by some conjecture of G. R. Robinson.

Let be a finite-dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field. Criteria are given which characterize existence of a fine or coarse moduli space classifying, up to isomorphism, the representations of with fixed dimension and fixed squarefree top . Next to providing a complete theoretical picture, some of these equivalent conditions are readily checkable from quiver and relations of . In the case of existence of a moduli space--unexpectedly frequent in light of the stringency of fine classification--this space is always projective and, in fact, arises as a closed subvariety of a classical Grassmannian. Even when the full moduli problem fails to be solvable, the variety is seen to have distinctive properties recommending it as a substitute for a moduli space. As an application, a characterization of the algebras having only finitely many representations with fixed simple top is obtained; in this case of `finite local representation type at a given simple ', the radical layering is shown to be a classifying invariant for the modules with top . This relies on the following general fact obtained as a byproduct: proper degenerations of a local module never have the same radical layering as .

Let be a unital Banach algebra. A projection in which is equivalent to the identitity may give rise to a matrix-like structure on any two-sided ideal in . In this set-up we prove a theorem to the effect that the bounded cohomology vanishes for all . The hypotheses of this theorem involve (i) strong H-unitality of , (ii) a growth condition on diagonal matrices in , and (iii) an extension of in by an amenable Banach algebra. As a corollary we show that if is an infinite dimensional Banach space with the bounded approximation property, is an infinite dimensional -space, and is the Banach algebra of approximable operators on , then for all .

The DoCarmo-Wallach moduli space parametrizing spherical minimal immersions of a Riemannian manifold is a compact convex body in a linear space of tracefree symmetric endomorphisms of an eigenspace of . In this paper we define and study a sequence of metric invariants , , associated to a compact convex body with base point in the interior of . The invariant measures how lopsided is in dimension with respect to . The results are then appplied to the DoCarmo-Wallach moduli space. We also give an efficient algorithm to calculate for convex polytopes.

The group of isometries of a rooted -ary tree, and many of its subgroups with branching structure, have groups of automorphisms induced by conjugation in . This fact has stimulated the computation of the group of automorphisms of such well-known examples as the group studied by R. Grigorchuk, and the group studied by N. Gupta and the second author.

In this paper, we pursue the larger theme of towers of automorphisms of groups of tree isometries such as and . We describe this tower for all subgroups of which decompose as infinitely iterated wreath products. Furthermore, we fully describe the towers of and .

More precisely, the tower of is infinite countable, and the terms of the tower are -groups. Quotients of successive terms are infinite elementary abelian -groups.

In contrast, the tower of has length , and its terms are -groups. We show that is an elementary abelian -group of countably infinite rank, while .

We study conjugacy closed loops by means of their multiplication groups. Let be a conjugacy closed loop, its nucleus, the associator subloop, and and the left and right multiplication groups, respectively. Put . We prove that the cosets of agree with orbits of , that and that one can define an abelian group on . We also explain why the study of finite conjugacy closed loops can be restricted to the case of nilpotent. Group is shown to be a subgroup of a power of (which is abelian), and we prove that can be embedded into . Finally, we describe all conjugacy closed loops of order .

We define , a substructure of (the lattice of classes), and show that a quotient structure of , , is isomorphic to . The result builds on the isomorphism machinery, and allows us to transfer invariant classes from to , though not, in general, orbits. Further properties of and ramifications of the isomorphism are explored, including degrees of equivalence classes and degree invariance.
