We define model structures on exact categories, which we call exact model structures. We look at the relationship between these model structures and cotorsion pairs on the exact category. In particular, when the underlying category is weakly idempotent complete, we get Hovey’s one-to-one correspondence between model structures and complete cotorsion pairs. We classify the right and the left homotopy relation in terms of the cotorsion pairs and look at examples of exact model structures. In particular, we see that given any hereditary abelian model category, the full subcategories of cofibrant, fibrant and cofibrant-fibrant subobjects each has natural exact model structures equivalent to the original model structure. These model structures each has interesting characteristics. For example, the cofibrant-fibrant subobjects form a Frobenius category, whose stable category is the same as the homotopy category of its model structure.  相似文献

In this paper we call generalized lax epimorphism a functor defined on a ring with several objects, with values in an abelian AB5 category, for which the associated restriction functor is fully faithful. We characterize such a functor with the help of a conditioned right cancellation of another functor, constructed in a canonical way from the initial one. As consequences we deduce a characterization of functors inducing an abelian localization and also a necessary and sufficient condition for a morphism of rings with several objects to induce an equivalence at the level of two localizations of the respective module categories.  相似文献

We prove that the 2-category of small abelian categories with exact functors is anti-equivalent to the 2-category of definable additive categories. We define and compare sheaves of localisations associated to the objects of these categories. We investigate the natural image of the free abelian category over a ring in the module category over that ring and use this to describe a basis for the Ziegler topology on injectives; the last can be viewed model-theoretically as an elimination of imaginaries result.  相似文献

We develop the obstruction theory of the 2-category of abelian track categories, pseudofunctors and pseudonatural transformations by using the cohomology of categories. The obstructions are defined in Baues-Wirsching cohomology groups. We introduce translation cohomology to classify endomorphisms in the 2-category of abelian track categories. In a sequel to this paper we will show, under certain conditions which are satisfied by all homotopy categories, that a translation cohomology class determines the exact triangles of a triangulated category.  相似文献

We show that the category of valuated groups has a topological forgetful functor to the category of abelian groups. This category is universal, that is, it is the bireflective hull of its To-objects, and properties of the (large) lattice of epireflective subcategories are contrasted with results obtained by T. Marny [7] for universal categories over the category of sets.  相似文献

We prove that the exactness of direct limits in an abelian category with products and an injective cogenerator J is equivalent to a condition on J which is well-known to characterize pure-injectivity in module categories, and we describe an application of this result to the tilting theory. We derive our result as a consequence of a more general characterization of when inverse limits in the Eilenberg–Moore category of a monad on the category of sets preserve regular epimorphisms.  相似文献

We endow the homotopy category of well generated (pretriangulated) dg categories with a tensor product satisfying a universal property. The resulting monoidal structure is symmetric and closed with respect to the cocontinuous RHom of dg categories (in the sense of Toën [32]). We give a construction of the tensor product in terms of localisations of dg derived categories, making use of the enhanced derived Gabriel-Popescu theorem [27]. Given a regular cardinal α, we define and construct a tensor product of homotopically α-cocomplete dg categories and prove that the well generated tensor product of α-continuous derived dg categories (in the sense of [27]) is the α-continuous dg derived category of the homotopically α-cocomplete tensor product. In particular, this shows that the tensor product of well generated dg categories preserves α-compactness.  相似文献

The order-reversing bijection between field extensions and subgroups of the Galois group G follows from the equivalence between the opposite of the category of étale algebras and the category of discrete G-spaces [2]. We show that the basic ingredient for this equivalence of categories, and for various known generalizations, is a factorization system for variable categories.  相似文献

The Popescu-Gabriel theorem states that each Grothendieck abelian category is a localization of a module category. In this paper, we prove an analogue where Grothendieck abelian categories are replaced by triangulated categories which are well generated (in the sense of Neeman) and algebraic (in the sense of Keller). The role of module categories is played by derived categories of small differential graded categories. An analogous result for topological triangulated categories has recently been obtained by A. Heider.  相似文献

In this paper we propose an approach to homotopical algebra where the basic ingredient is a category with two classes of distinguished morphisms: strong and weak equivalences. These data determine the cofibrant objects by an extension property analogous to the classical lifting property of projective modules. We define a Cartan-Eilenberg category as a category with strong and weak equivalences such that there is an equivalence of categories between its localisation with respect to weak equivalences and the relative localisation of the subcategory of cofibrant objects with respect to strong equivalences. This equivalence of categories allows us to extend the classical theory of derived additive functors to this non additive setting. The main examples include Quillen model categories and categories of functors defined on a category endowed with a cotriple (comonad) and taking values on a category of complexes of an abelian category. In the latter case there are examples in which the class of strong equivalences is not determined by a homotopy relation. Among other applications of our theory, we establish a very general acyclic models theorem.  相似文献

Characterizations of epidense subcategories of topological categories and of existence of epidense hulls have been described in [2, 3, 4]. In this paper a similar characterization is given in a much more general setting; for example the category need not have products. The relationship between finite factorization structures and existence of epidense hulls is investigated. It is found to be analogous to the relationship between general factorization structures and epireflective hulls.  相似文献

We generalize the small object argument in order to allow for its application to proper classes of maps (as opposed to sets of maps in Quillen's small object argument). The necessity of such a generalization arose with appearance of several important examples of model categories which were proven to be non-cofibrantly generated [J. Adámek, H. Herrlich, J. Rosický, W. Tholen, Weak factorization systems and topological functors, Appl. Categ. Structures 10 (3) (2002) 237-249 [2]; Papers in honour of the seventieth birthday of Professor Heinrich Kleisli (Fribourg, 2000); B. Chorny, The model category of maps of spaces is not cofibrantly generated, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 131 (2003) 2255-2259; J.D. Christensen, M. Hovey, Quillen model structures for relative homological algebra, Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 133 (2) (2002) 261-293; D.C. Isaksen, A model structure on the category of pro-simplicial sets, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 353 (2001) 2805-2841]. Our current approach allows for construction of functorial factorizations and localizations in the equivariant model structures on diagrams of spaces [E.D. Farjoun, Homotopy theories for diagrams of spaces, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 101 (1987) 181-189] and diagrams of chain complexes. We also formulate a non-functorial version of the argument, which applies in two different model structures on the category of pro-spaces [D.A. Edwards, H.M. Hastings, ?ech and Steenrod homotopy theories with applications to geometric topology, Lecture Notes in Mathematics, vol. 542, Springer, Berlin, 1976; D.C. Isaksen, A model structure on the category of pro-simplicial sets, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 353 (2001) 2805-2841].The examples above suggest a natural extension of the framework of cofibrantly generated model categories. We introduce the concept of a class-cofibrantly generated model category, which is a model category generated by classes of cofibrations and trivial cofibrations satisfying some reasonable assumptions.  相似文献

This is a contribution to the theory of atoms in abelian categories recently developed in a series of papers by Kanda. We present a method that enables one to explicitly compute the atom spectrum of the module category over a wide range of non‐commutative rings. We illustrate our method and results by several examples.  相似文献

In this paper we establish a new characterisation of star-regular categories, using a property of internal reflexive graphs, which is suggested by a recent result due to O. Ngaha Ngaha and the first author. We show that this property is, in a suitable sense, invariant under regular completion of a category in the sense of A. Carboni and E.M. Vitale. Restricting to pointed categories, where star-regularity becomes normality in the sense of the second author, this reveals an unusual behaviour of the exactness property of normality (i.e. the property that regular epimorphisms are normal epimorphisms) compared to other closely related exactness properties studied in categorical algebra.  相似文献

Beyond groups of automorphisms in the category Gp of groups and Lie-algebras of derivations in the category K-Lie of Lie algebras, there are structures of internal groupoids (called action groupoids) in both categories. They allow a synthesis of the notion of obstruction to extensions. This leads, in any pointed protomodular category C with split extension classifiers, to a general treatment of non-abelian extensions which can be understood as morphisms in a certain groupoid TorsC.  相似文献

Abstract

The above question is considered, in the categories ShL of sheaves on a local lattice L and MEns of sets acted upon by a monoid M, for either all divisible abelian groups or all torsionfree divisible abelian groups, the aim being to characterize those L and M for which these types of abelian groups are Injective. Typical results: All divisible abelian groups are injective (i) in ShL iff L is Boolean, (ii) in MEns, M left or right cancellative, iff M is trivial, and (iii) in MEns, M commutative iff M is finite and idempotent.  相似文献

Simple and semisimple additive categories are studied. We prove, for example, that an artinian additive category is (semi)simple iff it is Morita equivalent to a division ring(oid). Semiprimitive additive categories (that is, those with zero radical) are those which admit anoether full, faithful functor into a category of modules over a division ringoid.  相似文献

A stable model category is a setting for homotopy theory where the suspension functor is invertible. The prototypical examples are the category of spectra in the sense of stable homotopy theory and the category of unbounded chain complexes of modules over a ring. In this paper we develop methods for deciding when two stable model categories represent ‘the same homotopy theory’. We show that stable model categories with a single compact generator are equivalent to modules over a ring spectrum. More generally stable model categories with a set of generators are characterized as modules over a ‘ring spectrum with several objects’, i.e., as spectrum valued diagram categories. We also prove a Morita theorem which shows how equivalences between module categories over ring spectra can be realized by smashing with a pair of bimodules. Finally, we characterize stable model categories which represent the derived category of a ring. This is a slight generalization of Rickard's work on derived equivalent rings. We also include a proof of the model category equivalence of modules over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum HR and (unbounded) chain complexes of R-modules for a ring R.  相似文献

In 1961, Jan-Erik Roos published a “theorem”, which says that in an [AB4*] abelian category, lim1 vanishes on Mittag–Leffler sequences. See Propositions 1 and 5 in [4]. This is a “theorem” that many people since have known and used. In this article, we outline a counterexample. We construct some strange abelian categories, which are perhaps of some independent interest.?These abelian categories come up naturally in the study of triangulated categories. A much fuller discussion may be found in [3]. Here we provide a brief, self contained, non–technical account. The idea is to make the counterexample easy to read for all the people who have used the result in their work.?In the appendix, Deligne gives another way to look at the counterexample.
